Viola Davis is backing away from “G20” in a move that may put pressure on other A-listers.
The Egot winner says she’s stepping away from the project even after the film got the SAG-AFTRA interim agreement necessary to start production.
“I love this movie, but I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike,” said the 57-year-old in a statement obtained by Et. “I appreciate that the producers on the project agree with this decision. JuVee Productions and I stand in solidarity with actors, SAG/AFTRA and the WGA.”
On Friday, SAG-AFTRA shared via its website that “G20” was approved for a waiver. Davis was set to produce and star in the film that secured the go-ahead from the actors guild, even given the involvement of Amazon Studios, because the project hails from the non AMPTP-affiliated MRC and will only be distributed by Amazon.

Exclusive: In a move that might well set a precedent for other A-listers, G20 star Viola Davis has become the first to publicly back away from a project for the duration of the actors and writers strikes, even after the film got the SAG-AFTRA interim agreement necessary to start production.

News of the move on Davis’ part comes one day after an unconfirmed report in The Sun that Brad Pitt has paused production on his Formula One film for Apple, in solidarity with strikers, also stepping away from a title called Apex.

The Red Line, a new drama premiering April 28th on CBS, explores the aftermath of a white cop shooting an unarmed black man in Chicago. Named for the North-South line of the Chicago “L” (or elevated train system), a route that connects two wildly different parts of the city, the show centers on three families — that of the victim, that of the officer and that of an aspiring city politician — as they contend with the fallout. Former ER star Noah Wyle anchors the cast along with Shameless star Noel Fisher and Emayatzy Corinealdi,...

CBS’ upcoming event series, “The Red Line,” starts with the shooting of an African-American doctor by a Caucasian Chicago police officer after a convenience story robbery, but the conversation the show aims to start, per the producers, extends beyond race.
“There are two Americas living side by side and many different privileges and justices exist depending on the side,” co-creator Caitlin Parrish said at the CBS Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for the show Wednesday.
The goal of the show, added co-creator Erica Weiss, is to bring to life a “cultural conversation through the lens of an emotional family drama.” To that end, they created a show “about characters and their personal choices,” but, Weiss was quick to add, that those individuals and their choices also provide an “engine” for important conversations about institutions and systems, including the police force and politicians.

The man who is the talk of upfronts is not even there.
Uberproducer Greg Berlanti, who has just set a new record with 14 series on air, makes it a point to stay in L.A. during the busiest week of the year for the TV business. “I never go to upfronts. They never notice when I’m there, so I stopped going years ago,” he confesses. “I’m also really superstitious. The last time I went, I got a bunch of shows canceled. So now I don’t come back.”
Whatever his secret, it’s working: Berlanti added to his already overfull plate with three new broadcast series (CBS’ “God Friended Me” and “The Red Line” and The CW’s “All-American”), the digital series “Doom Patrol” for DC Universe — and only faced one cancellation (ABC’s “Deception”).

When DC fans hear the term “Trinity,” they tend to think of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, the three characters who’ve long been the publisher’s cornerstones in a variety of media. Or, if you’re an Arrowverse diehard, the likes of Green Arrow, the Flash and Supergirl may hold a similar place in your heart.
The reason we’re bringing this up is because the May 7 episode of Supergirl actually happens to be titled “Trinity,” but it’s not going to yield what one would necessarily expect. Rather, it has everything to do with those dastardly Worldkillers, as this newly released synopsis tells us the following:
Supergirl Takes On All Three Worldkillers – Still reeling after learning about Lena’s (Katie McGrath) secret, Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) asks Guardian (Mehcad Brooks) for a favor that could alter his relationship with Lena forever. Meanwhile, with all three Worldkillers united, Supergirl and...

The 2018 pilot season is shaping up to be a landmark year for women behind the camera.
Female creators and directors saw gains virtually across the board, as networks ramp up efforts to include more women in the pilot process. As Variety previously reported, the Time’s Up and Me Too movements have played important roles this season, with the networks all looking for ways to increase female representation.
According to multiple TV literary agents who spoke with Variety, there was a clear shift within the networks this year to increase the number of women behind the camera, particularly in the director’s chair. One source also noted that the studios exerted “immense pressure” to increase the number of female directors this season.
ABC has 13 female creators on 9 of their 23 pilots this year, up from 9 creators in 2017. Of those, five are comedies, including originals from Liz Meriwether and J.J. Philbin, Diablo Cody,...

Chicago – The actualities that define adolescence are always prime for new territory in drama, and that is what the Chicago-based film “The View from Tall” accomplishes. Co-directed by Erica Weiss and Caitlin Parrish, it will be screened at the Midwest Independent Film Festival on Tuesday, April 4th, 2017 (details below).
The story centers on Justine (Amanda Drinkall), a highly intelligent high school senior who feels like an outsider in her insular adolescent community. Her rebellion was a consensual relationship with a teacher, and the subsequent problems when the situation is exposed has the teacher exiled, and places Justine in therapy. Her facilitator is Douglas (Michael Patrick Thornton), a wheelchair bound therapist who frees her thoughts and reactions. Their intimacy evokes feelings that neither one of them expect, which raises the suspicions of Justine’s sister Paula (Carolyn Braver).

Los Angeles Film Festival hosted so many films directed by women, packing them all into one article would just be excessive. I already talked about Maria Goven’s tepid Play the Devil, but these next four films were real standouts. While too many independent films are plagued by a need to fit in, to conform, to act as a demo reel for some up-and-coming filmmakers just dying to get hired for a studio gig, these four purposefully and forcefully resist the marketplace, acting as pure vessels for the artists behind them. They find varying degrees of inspiration, but each is more than noteworthy.

Hailing from the Chicago theater community is A View from Tall, a debut independent feature telling a story of teen sexuality and its collision with institutional power dynamics. Directed by Caitlin Parrish and Erica Weiss, and based on Parrish’s play, the film deals with a loner teen, Justine, who is ostracized from her peers because of a sexual relationship with a teacher that became public. She bonds with her therapist, a disabled man with issues of his own. Since writing The View from Tall, playwright Parrish has become a successful television writer, working on shows like Supergirl and Under the Dome. […]...

Chicago – One of the many merits of CIMMfest – the Chicago International Music and Movies Festival – is how they provide a showcase to new programming and emerging talent. On the second day of the 2016 festival (April 14), Potenza Productions will premiere their new music show, “On the Scene,” with the director debut of Mary Kay Cook.
Cook has been an actress and producer of note throughout her career, and now adds director to her resume for the new web series. “On the Scene” is described as an all-access-pass to what is happening right now in music, and is about performance, conversation and “whatever we get on camera,” for the backstage perspective on the particular band being profiled. “On the Scene” is hosted by Rocco Cataldo.
