Nishtha Jain’s “Farming the Revolution” — winner of the best international feature documentary prize at Hot Docs — captures the vast emotional scope of revolutionary movements. Chronicling the lengthy stand-off between Indian farmers and the Modi government, during which tens of thousands of Sikh and Punjabi farm workers occupied highways and state borders, the film is remarkable in its audio-visual inquiry into protest as a cultural movement, and in its excavation of the emotional highs and lows involved in making lasting change.
Over eight months between 2020 and 2021, millions of people would weave in and out of these caravans of trucks and makeshift houses surrounding New Delhi, in the hope of curbing new laws that would open Indian agriculture to predatory corporate interests while plunging farmers into poverty. Jain captures the sweeping magnitude of the protests through overhead drone shots and careful compositions on the ground — she often shoots large crowds from just above eye level,...

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is suing his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his son, Daphne Joy Narvaez, for defamation following her public accusation in March that he raped her while the two were in a relationship more than a decade ago.
The rapper/actor/producer filed the suit in Texas on May 6 after Narvaez posted a statement that he had raped her on Instagram on March 28. That was prompted by Jackson’s reported attempts to gain sole custody of their 11-year-old son, Sire, following the bombshell lawsuit filed by producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones Jr. against Sean “Diddy” Combs, which among many explosive allegations of sex trafficking and grooming, named Narvaez as a sex worker alongside Combs’ ex-girlfriend, Yung Miami.
“I am tired of upholding and protecting an image to our son that you have never even earned. Let’s put the real focus on your true evil actions of...

Eminent Indian documentarian Nishtha Jain’s latest effort is an account of the epic, year-long farmers’ protest that took place in India in 2020-21.
“Farming the Revolution,” which world premieres at Hot Docs, follows the millions of Indian farmers who gathered during the height of Covid-19 lockdown at the borders of the country’s capital, Delhi, to protest against newly enacted farm laws. The farmers believed that if implemented, these laws would negatively impact the government-protected farmers’ markets, leaving them to the vagaries of the free market.
Jain is known for jute weaving documentary “The Golden Thread,” which won the top prize at Bergamo this year and multiple award-winning woman empowerment film “Gulabi Gang” (2012).
“It was the Covid year. We had already witnessed heart-rending scenes when the sudden announcement of all-India lockdown saw millions of Indian migrant workers walk to their homes thousands of miles away from the cities. A...

The Golden Thread by documentarian Nishtha Jain opens up with a 16-minute long wordless and contemplative sequence. From the lovingly shot lush green of jute plants bending in the wind amid the chirp of birds and insects, to a farmer harvesting them and putting in sheaf, and a natural thread woven by old buzzing machines in dated factory interiors. It evokes a feeling of longing, nostalgia, and indefinite loss… But unfortunately, this doc, or rather a poetic impression, hardly offers anything more than just the sentimental gaze.
The Golden Thread is screening at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles
The director, who came to international attention with her bold and sparklingly energetic female-empowering feature doc “Gulabi Gang”, takes us to the once prosperous world of old Bengali jute mills. Nowadays, their glory days are long over. The demand for jute has dropped over the years, courtesy of plastic domination, and the old-fashioned factories are closing.

Reality dating show “Love Island’ is edited based on social media responses to the contestants an ITV exec has revealed.
“Social media is part of the success of ‘Love Island,’” Angela Jain, director of unscripted U.K. at ITV Studios told Channel 4 boss during a panel at the Royal Television Society conference in Cambridge on Wednesday.
“One of the smartest decisions we made right at the very beginning was to embed the digital team on location with the [‘Love Island’] production team in Majorca to create a feedback loop,” Jain explained. “Effectively the team are monitoring social media to really understand how the viewer is responding to the content and we would change — as we are able to because this is a fast turnaround show — we were able to change the editorial if we felt that one character was coming to the foreground more than the other and we would respond to it.

New Delhi, Sep 2 (Ians) Farmers in India have adapted to warming temperatures by intensifying the withdrawal of groundwater used for irrigation.
If the trend continues, the rate of groundwater loss could triple by 2080, further threatening India’s food and water security, a new study led by an Indian-origin researcher has warned.
Reduced water availability in India due to groundwater depletion and climate change could threaten the livelihoods of more than one-third of the country’s 1.4 billion residents and has global implications, according to the study led by University of Michigan in the US.
India is the second-largest global producer of common cereal grains including rice and wheat.
“We find that farmers are already increasing irrigation use in response to warming temperatures, an adaptation strategy that has not been accounted for in previous projections of groundwater depletion in India,” said senior author Meha Jain, assistant professor at the university’s school for
environment and sustainability.

New Delhi, Aug 3 (Ians) Premji Invest-backed software-as-a-service (SaaS) startup Increff has reportedly laid off 20 per cent of its workforce, or about 60 employees.
According to an Inc42 report, the job cuts affected employees in tech, sales, customer success, and Hr departments, as part of the cost-cutting exercise by Increff.
Increff CEO and co-founder Rajul Jain confirmed the layoffs, saying the startup is aiming to turn profitable again.
Jain, however, said that they will continue with expansion plans in the US and Europe, according to the report.
“The layoffs were a part of the cost-cutting exercise that Increff is doing to achieve profitability at the earliest. Without attaining profitability, the startup won’t get the valuation that it is seeking,” according to the report, citing sources.

New Delhi, Aug 3 (Ians) As the 51st Gst Council meeting stayed firm on taxing online gaming at 28 per cent on gross value collected, industry players on Thursday once again criticised the decision, saying that taxing Gst on deposits rather than the technology platform commission charged by the companies will make the unit economics unviable, wiping out 80 per cent of the industry.
Most of the fatalities will be concentrated in MSMEs and startups that house new age business models, according to them.
“This increase of 400 per cent will solely encourage the rise of monopolistic play. Reasonable taxation can protect our over 500 million internet consumers from illegal offshore products,” said Saumya Singh Rathore, Co-founder, WinZO.
In a joint statement, the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports and E-Gaming Federation said that the new tax framework, while clarifying and resolving uncertainty, will lead to a very burdensome 350 per cent increase in Gst and set...

According to Variety, the production is presented in two parts and narrated by a storyteller (Miriam Fernandes). ‘Karma’ (part 1), is the origin story of the rival Pandava and Kaurava clans. In ‘Dharma’ (part 2), a great battle destroys the planet and the survivors are left behind to rebuild.

New Delhi, June 6 (Ians) The Delhi High Court observed that the power to grant bail on medical grounds under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (Pmla) is discretionary and should be exercised carefully, ensuring the existence of necessary circumstances justifying such a decision.
The court was hearing a bail plea filed by Sanjay Jain, who is accused in a money laundering case. Jain’s wife filed an affidavit on May 22 seeking interim bail for him on medical and humanitarian grounds for a period of three months, citing his deteriorating health condition.
The court emphasised that while the liberty of an accused or convicted person can be restricted according to the established legal procedure, the right to health is also recognised as an essential aspect of Article 21 of the Constitution.
Justice Vikas Mahajan further observed that the right to life should not be curtailed solely because a person is an undertrial or convict in jail.

Mumbai, May 27 (Ians) Karnataka’s Pradeep Chaudhari and Maharashtra’s Avinash Yadav, both seeded in the 9/16 category, made early exits, losing to Delhi’s unseeded Harshit Jain and Maharashtra’s Aran Thwani respectively, in the men’s Round of 32 matches of the 6th Nsci Open National Circuit squash tournament.
With the high humidity not making their task any easier, it was high-octane stuff at the glass-backed courts of the Nsci on Saturday as two seeded players were shown the door from the event hosted by Nsci here, on Saturday.
Chaudhari fought gamely against Jain, but mistakes at crucial junctures saw him lose a close match at 12-14, 17-19, 11-7, 11-13. Yadav and Thawani slugged it out for five games before Thawani prevailed 11-9, 12-10, 6-11, 9-1,11-7.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s top seed Rahul Baitha hardly broke a sweat before getting the better of Dhruv Jaitly 11-5, 11-5, 11-8 to advance.

During the hearing, senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Jain, submitted that Jain has lost 33 kgs, and is suffering from muscular atrophy, and he is entitled to private treatment, arguing how such bail applications can be opposed on humanitarian grounds.
Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, representing the Ed, said that condition is an old condition and it is not new.

New York, May 9 (Ians) Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) US researchers, including one of Indian origin, have developed a simple test that works for both hepatitis C and Covid-19, and delivers results in just a few minutes.
The test was 97 per cent accurate for Sars-CoV-2 and 95 per cent accurate for the most prevalent version of the hepatitis C virus found globally, the researchers reported in the journal Cell Reports Medicine.
The simplified test developed by University of Florida scientists currently happens in one small test tube, but it could arrive at doctor’s offices soon and, one day, become available as home tests that are as easy as a pregnancy test.
“We are trying to build a home-based test that is as reliable as a lab-based test,” said Piyush Jain, Professor of chemical engineering who led the latest research.

New Delhi, Jan 30 (Ians) India currently has around 35 per cent of its towers fiberised for 5G and the backhaul infrastructure will cost a whopping Rs 3 lakh crore over the next 4-5 years, rating agency Icra said on Monday.
The full-scale 5G deployment across the country will entail densification of the network and, thereby, sizable investments in fiberisation.
However, the debt levels for the industry continue to remain high and the same further increased post the conclusion of the last round of auctions.
The industry is expected to close the year with a debt of around Rs 6.3 lakh crore.
“While the rollouts have started and customers are being upgraded to the 5G network, the same is being done at no additional costs as 5G-specific plans have not been launched yet. Moreover, 5G deployment will entail densification of network and close placement of radio antennas, with possible collocation on street furniture,” said Ankit Jain,...
