President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have both agreed to their first debate of the 2024 election cycle, to be held on the historically early side — Thursday, June 27 — and air on CNN.
Biden accepted CNN’s invite on Wednesday morning, sharing on social media, “Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place.” Trump responded in kind not long after, telling Fox News, “I’ll be there.”

President Joe Biden threw down the gauntlet on Wednesday, directly challenging former President Donald Trump – his expected 2024 rival — to not one, but two debates. Within hours, CNN announced via press release that it would be hosting the first debate in the presidential rematch on June 27 in the key battleground state of Georgia — where Trump remains under criminal indictment for attempting to interfere with the results of the 2020 election.

Roberto Rossellini’s 1945 neorealist drama is unsparing in its depiction of the heavy price of both resistance and collaboration with the Nazi occupation
Roberto Rossellini’s 1945 film is a blazingly urgent and painful bulletin from the frontline of Italy’s historical agony: the Axis power that had belatedly turned against the Mussolini fascists only to be humiliatingly occupied by Nazi Germany on whose orders the dictator was reinstalled in the northern Salò puppet state, resplendent in contemptible impotence and pathos, with Rome at its defeated and compromised centre. It was a film that used the so-recently-devastated real streets and people of Rome on location for a project on which Rossellini started script work well before the end of the war, building on ideas by screenwriter Sergio Amidei with dialogue contribution by the young Federico Fellini.

The only person who believed in David Bowie’s vision of “Young Americans” more than Bowie himself was David Sanborn. The saxophonist, who was trained in jazz, had broken into the pop world as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and by guesting on Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book. Sanborn, who died Sunday, was in his late 20s when he linked up with Bowie for the Diamond Dogs Tour — he’s featured on the David Live double-album — and joined him in the studio for the recording of Bowie...

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival may be lighter on glitz and glamour than in years past, but that means arthouse and international fare from emerging and established filmmakers will get a chance to shine. Still, at least two American auteurs, Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Paul Schrader, have films in the main competition for the first time in decades. David Cronenberg (“The Shrouds”) and Yorgos Lanthimos (“Kinds of Kindness”) are also back at the festival, with both making personal stories in their own way: Cronenberg, here, reckons with grief over the death of his wife seven years ago, while Lanthimos appears to retreat back into “Dogtooth” territory in a film that’s almost a rebuke of the global success he’s acquired with “Poor Things” and “The Favourite.”
Sean Baker, Andrea Arnold, Ali Abbasi, Jia Zhangke, Karim Aïnouz, and Paolo Sorrentino are also back at Cannes this year with new films in the competition.

It's safe to say that the wheels on Imogen and Adilah's tenuous friendship are just about ready to fall off in The Veil Season 1 Episode 4.
However, the show finally delivered some long-awaited action that was previewed in the series' initial trailer. While it was expected that the show would need to lay some groundwork and world-building, it was a surprise that it would take four episodes to get to some real action.
That being said, it has been nice to see the bond between Imogen and Adilah grow, even though it's apparent that theirs is a fate destined for far more rockier times.
At this point, it's tough to determine where everyone's loyalties lie. While everyone is undoubtedly working to stop whatever terrorist attack is underway, it seems more like each intelligence branch is simply trying to outdo the other.

90 Day Fiance Michael Ilesanmi Caught Partying With Mystery Woman?
Michael Ilesanmi and Angela Deem never had a perfect relationship. They argued about everything from money to cheating and then some. The amount of times they broke up meant they should never have gotten married. Since they were waiting on his visa to come to America, the duo tied the knot in Nigeria in early 2020. After that, Angela underwent multiple procedures to change her look, weight, and more yet they still fought a lot. Eventually, they ended up on the 90 Day Fiance spinoff, The Last Resort...

A study from Comcast shows how viewers are finding new television content in the age of peak choice.
Times have changed since the days when TVs had actual channel dials. If you wanted something to watch, you flipped on your set and switched between the five or six channels your rabbit-ears antenna picked up, then settled on a title or turned it off. Now, viewers have thousands of programming choices between TV channels and on-demand streaming services, and a new survey from Comcast has details regarding just how difficult those choices have become.
Key Details: Comcast found that more than 60% of American audiences search for six minutes or more for a new show or movie. Seeing a promotional ad for a program increases its tune-in rate by 228%. Over 50% of Americans say they’ve watched a show or movie after finding it on their smart TV home screen.

Fox has given a series order to “Going Dutch,” a comedy series starring and executive produced by Denis Leary.
Per the official description, the single-camera series “centers on an arrogant loudmouth U.S. Army Colonel, who after an epically unfiltered rant, is reassigned to the Netherlands, where he is punished with a command position at the least important army base in the world. After serving with distinction in every warzone of the last three decades, he now finds himself in charge of a base with no guns, no weapons and no tactical purpose. Instead, it has a Michelin-star level commissary, top notch bowling alley and the best (and only) fromagerie in the U.S. Army. Surrounded by a diverse group of underdogs, the colonel tries to reinstall military discipline and professionalism with the help of the base’s previous interim leader, who just happens to be his estranged daughter.”

A Virginia man who inadvertently carried ammunition in his luggage on a cruise now faces a possible minimum 12-year imprisonment in a Turks and Caicos prison.
Tyler Wenrich, 31, has been on Grand Turk Island since his arrest two weeks ago. When at a security checkpoint upon his return to the Royal Caribbean Cruise ship after a beach excursion, two 9mm rounds were discovered in his bag.
Speaking to NBC10 Boston from the island, where he is confined, Wenrich described the situation as a nightmare. “I can almost not wrap my head around it still, and I’m living in it,” he said.
Wenrich claimed it was an honest mistake; he inadvertently left the ammunition in his bag from previous hunting trips.
“I checked it before I left, and it was just a complete oversight on me, Tsa and the port security,” he said. “Three groups missed that ammunition.”

The terror in "The Twilight Zone" always comes from "What if?" What if there was a little boy with way too much power for anyone to tell him "no"? What if what you thought of as Heaven turned out to be more like Hell? What if man-eating aliens arrived and made humans as docile as lambs to the slaughter?
These questions may be outrageous fantasy, but the terror of them is timeless. We still watch "The Twilight Zone" decades later, and the best episodes can still leave you chilled -- all thanks to the imagination of series creator Rod Serling.

From 2010 to 2023, when "Doctor Who" fans claimed they missed former showrunner Russell T Davies, they usually meant they missed his great character work. The original Davies' run, from season 1 through 4 of the revival series, is notable in how it clearly presents its companions not just as relatable, working-class women, but how it puts them at the center of the narrative. It's not necessarily a better approach than Davies' successor Steven Moffat (who would generally make the Doctor the point-of-view character), but it's a totally reasonable approach to be nostalgic for.
What those fans probably weren't referring to is Davies' questionable taste in monsters. Although he occasionally gives us some classic villains, like whatever that thing was in "Midnight," his original aliens tend to be on the sillier, juvenile side of things. Davies is the guy who gave us not one, not two, but three different episodes focused on the Slitheen,...

Doctor Who Season 1 Episode 1 was intended to be a soft reboot of the iconic British series as it launches to worldwide audiences on Disney+. It was a pilot episode that felt connected to the past, especially to the classic Doctor Who episodes that aired in the 1970s.
It also connected to the first reboot in 2005 but shed one crucial element: the Doctor is no longer depressed and brooding about his people's deaths.
Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Has More in Common With Tom Baker Than With Most of the Modern Doctors
The Doctor was initially conceived as an enigmatic alien who chose to travel the universe in search of fun and excitement and help for beings in need.
By the time the original series ended in 1989, however, he was a much darker figure, and the 2005 reboot presented a Doctor...

The Doctor Who press juggernaut materialized in New York last week, bringing with it leading stars Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson. The iconic, long-running BBC science-fiction show about a time-and-space traveling alien debuts its latest season on streamer Disney+ on Friday.
Gatwa, who grew up in Scotland after leaving Rwanda as a child, is already known for playing Eric Effiong in Sex Education (Netflix) and as one of the many Kens in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023). Lesser known internationally is Gibson, who turns 20 in June. In the U.K., the actor made a name for herself in the television soap opera, Coronation Street (which is even longer-running than Doctor Who).
The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the pair to discuss the opening two episodes of their first season (which release at 7 p.m. on the streamer). There’s no spoilers below, but do come back Saturday for the second part of this interview,...

Last summer, Wenfei Xie, a doctor from Kansas City, Missouri, went to see Taylor Swift in her hometown. She met a fellow Swiftie at the show who had reached out to Paris La Défense Arena in France to purchase tickets to Swift’s four-night stand. The fan had been shocked to learn that tickets cost significantly lower than in the U.S. Xie booked a VIP suite for herself and a few college friends, but her overseas travel plans quickly spiraled. Jon Stewart continued with his criticism of the media’s coverage of Donald Trump’s New York trial during Thursday’s episode of The Daily Show. “It has been another big week of wall-to-wall, nonstop penis-to-penis coverage of Donald Trump’s trial,” Stewart said at the start of his monologue.
Stewart, who typically hosts Monday night episodes of the Comedy Central show, missed the start of this week in a pre-announced absence that was likely due to his live appearances in Los Angeles last weekend. Instead, he hosted this week’s Thursday episode.
Also, this week, Stormy Daniels testified in the former president’s New York hush money trial, further fueling an onslaught of headlines regarding the lawsuit.
“The ubiquitous coverage is numbing, fading into televised wallpaper with insight that only occasionally crackles through,” Stewart continued.
This week’s episode is not Stewart’s first time going after the media’s coverage of the trial.

Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan said he would vote for President Joe Biden instead of former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
Duncan explained his decision in an op-ed he wrote for The Atlanta-Journal Constitution titled, “Geoff Duncan: Why I’m voting for Biden and other Republicans should, too.”
In his op-ed, he stated how it was “disappointing to watch an increasing number of Republicans fall in line behind former president Donald Trump,” including “some of his fiercest detractors.”
He mentioned detractors such as “U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu and former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr, who raised eyebrows during a recent interview by vowing to support the Republican ticket.”
“Yes, elections are a binary choice,” Duncan admitted. “Yes, serious questions linger about President Biden’s ability to serve until the age of 86. His progressive policies aren’t to conservatives’ liking.

Exclusive: Abramorama announced they have acquired the rights to North American theatrical distribution of veteran political documentarian Aj Schnack’s latest film Majority Rules, which captures a history-making period during which Alaska became the first state in the nation to implement new election reforms that promise to put voters back at the forefront of elections and governing.
In Majority Rules, Schnack, who is known for his nonpartisan documentaries that delve into American electoral politics, including Convention, Caucus and Midterms, follows Alaska as it is set to implement two novel election reforms: the elimination of traditional party primaries and the ability for voters to rank candidates based on preferences. When the state’s longest-serving Congressman dies unexpectedly leaving an open seat, it prompts a special election to put this system to the test months earlier than anticipated. World War II was still raging in May 1944. The allied invasion of Normandy — aka D-Day — was just around the corner on June 6th. Americans kept the home fires burning and escaped from the global conflict by going to the movies. Two of the biggest films of the year, Leo McCarey’s “Going My Way” and George Cukor’s “Gaslight,” recently celebrated their 80th anniversaries.
Actually, “Going My Way” had a special “Fighting Front” premiere on April 27th: 65 prints were shipped to battle fronts and shown “from Alaska to Italy, and from England to the jungles of Burma.” The sentimental comedy-drama-musical arrived in New York on May 3rd.
And it was just the uplifting film audiences needed. Bing Crosby starred as Father O’Malley, a laid-back young priest who arrives at a debt-ridden New York City church that is run by the older, set-in-his ways Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald). The elder...

Vizio grew the number of customers using its smart TV platform to 18.9 million during the first three months of 2024 (Q1), logging a net addition of 400,000 SmartCast customers that helped push its advertising revenue to a new high.
On Wednesday, Vizio said it earned $159.6 million from its connected TV platform, which consists mainly of digital advertising revenue, a 27 percent increase on a year-over basis. Platform revenue was around 10 percent lower on a sequential basis.
Gross profit also increased to $98.1 million, but it wasn’t enough to fully cover expenses at Vizio, with the company reporting a net loss of $12.1 million for the quarter. In the previous quarter, Vizio posted a rare net profit of $13.2 million.
Device revenue continued to hamper Vizio’s overall earnings, with the company bringing in $194.3 million from the sales of its smart TVs and sound bars during the first three months of the year, including...

The Current Debate is a column that connects the dots between great writing about a topic in the wider film conversation.Civil War.Every now and then there comes a film so in tune with our pestilential zeitgeist as to earn that most dangerous of descriptors: important. I can’t think of many words more vacuous, not only because of all the questions it leaves unanswered, but also because of the argument it peddles: that a film’s ability to sponge the mood of our times should count as an artistic merit. A film is important because it deals with important topics, or so the logic goes; it is necessary because these are things we all should care about, lessons we ought to treasure, and warnings we must heed. In this Neanderthal worldview, art is reduced to propaganda, and audiences to crowds who must be educated and pandered to. But...

The Americans are back shooting films and TV series in Canada, but the knock-on impacts of the dual Hollywood writers and actors strikes and reduced spending by major streamers will be felt north of the border for years to come.
So says the latest annual economic report from the Canadian Media Producers Association, representing local indie producers, which points to a post-pandemic high water mark for Hollywood production activity in Canada reached before last year’s labor disruption in Los Angeles, and which is now fast receding amid a sharp industry slowdown.
“The numbers released in Profile 2023 today are more of a happy memory, than a reflection of the current state of the sector,” warned Cmpa president and CEO Reynolds Mastin in a statement while releasing Profile 2023: An Economic Report on the Screen-based Media Production Industry in Canada, which measured overall Canadian film and TV production for the year...

Bradley Cooper is teaming up with PBS to produce a documentary about the millions of people who provide unpaid care to family members.
The documentary, Caregiving, is in production and is set to air in 2025 on PBS stations. Weta, the public broadcasting station in Washington, is producing the film with Cooper’s Lea Pictures and Ark Media (Finding Your Roots).
The film will examine both systemic issues within the care system — where more than 50 million Americans provide unpaid care to family members — as well as tell personal stories of people who care for loved ones.
Cooper’s involvement also stems from personal experience: “When my father was diagnosed with cancer, that was a wake-up call for me, one that really opened my eyes to the world of caregiving,” the Oscar nominee said in a statement. “Everyone will end up caring for a loved one at some point in their life.

The dispute between TikTok and the United States government is headed to the courts (again). After challenging state-level laws that sought to limit TikTok’s U.S. availability, the app is preparing to mount a legal offensive against the new federal law that attempts to force either a TikTok divestiture or a Stateside ban.
TikTok and parent company ByteDance have officially filed federal lawsuits that will contest the legality of the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversaries Act, as the newly-signed law is known. These legal actions have raised several issues related to the law; for starters, TikTok is arguing that the “obviously unconstitutional” regulation restricts Americans’ right to expression and unfairly targets one specific entity.
“Congress has taken the unprecedented step of expressly singling out and banning TikTok: a vibrant online forum for protected speech and expression used by 170 million Americans to create, share, and view videos over the Internet,...

Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina) would not commit to accepting the outcome of the 2024 presidential election in a new interview. The South Carolina senator is on former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential shortlist.
On Sunday, Meet the Press host Kristen Welker asked Scott, “You voted to certify the election results of 2020. It’s the opposite of what you said and did after 2020. Why would you want to be on a ticket with someone where there’s such a fundamental difference?”
“There is clear facts here,” Scott replied. “President Trump himself said he expects this election to be fair. He expects it to be honest. And he expects to win. That’s what the presidential candidate should expect. And I expect the exact same thing. And frankly, the American people agree with him. This is an issue that is not an issue. So I’m not going to make it an issue.

Hugely popular social media platform TikTok and its Chinese parent ByteDance sued the U.S. government after a recent law passed by Congress and signed by President Biden just weeks ago that gives the company about nine months to sell TikTok or face a ban in U.S. app stores.
TikTok says the new law violates the U.S. Constitution and its First Amendment rights. The suit, or petition, filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., was not unexpected as ByteDance has said it has no intention of selling TikTok and vowed to fight. TikTok insists that its U.S. user date is protected.
“There is no question: the Act will force a shutdown of TikTok by January 19, 2025,” the lawsuit states, “silencing the 170 million Americans who use the platform to communicate in ways that cannot be replicated elsewhere,” the suit says. “For the first time in history,...

Social media giant TikTok has sued the U.S. government, alleging that recently signed legislation that could potentially ban the app violates the First Amendment rights of both the company and its users.

Deep in the lush mountains of the Caribbean island of Dominica, amid stands of lemongrass, giant ferns and palms, three roads converge where two lives ended, violently. A few weeks before Christmas, the bodies of Daniel Langlois, a French-Canadian philanthropist and Hollywood animation centi-millionaire, and his partner, Dominique Marchand, were found at that spot, in a car, halfway into a ravine, burned beyond recognition. Even though the bodies were charred, investigators could tell they had been shot first.
The official and still-evolving story of their murders is a classic tale of good versus evil set in a steamy jungle. Like other expats who live on Dominica, Langlois and Marchand, who bought their property in the late 1990s, were attracted to the island’s wild, Edenic quality; its waterfalls, volcanic hot pools and deep green forests where spectacular blossoms northerners would see only in florist shops grow like weeds. But the...

Spoiler Alert! This story contains details from the series finale of Bob ❤️ Abishola on CBS.
The multi-camera comedy about an American businessman who falls in love with a Nigerian nurse wrapped May 6 in much the same way it kicked off in 2019 — with lots of charm and affection served up by its affable stars Billy Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku.
Here, co-creator/EP/co-star Gina Yashere and EP Matt Ross talk about what went into crafting their sentimental Bob ❤️ Abishola finale, the show’s legacy and whether they regret using a heart emoji in the title.
Deadline: Talk about the decision to employ a time jump in the finale. Why did you do it?
Gina Yashere: There were certain stories that we started in previous seasons, like in Season 4 we’d ended on a cliffhanger. Is Abishola going to go to Johns Hopkins? And then throughout Season 4, we never really touched on the subject again.

Now that a potential TikTok ban has been passed by Congress and signed by President Biden, some lawmakers are getting more comfortable saying what exactly the ban would help them accomplish. In recent days, at least two prominent Republican lawmakers have linked the possible ban to their concerns that content on the extremely popular social media app is too sympathetic to Palestinians under siege in Gaza.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we asked Latine comedians and creators we admire how comedy has supported them in overcoming trauma and confronting life's most significant challenges. Read the pieces here.
Fabrizio Copano, a rising star in the world of stand-up comedy, isn't your typical Latine comic. His journey, shaped by his Chilean upbringing under a pos-dictatorship and his subsequent disillusionment with the American Dream, fuels a unique comedic perspective that tackles serious political and cultural themes.
Copano's early life in Chile was marked by the tail-end of political turmoil. Growing up, he witnessed firsthand the harsh repercussions of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship, a period characterized by repression, human rights abuses, and a stifling political climate. This experience undoubtedly contrasts the idealized image of the US he received through the media.

Has there ever been a more bonkers superhero than Deadpool? Equal parts violent and zany, this lethal mercenary, also known as the "Merc with a Mouth," first appeared in the "New Mutants" comic series in December 1990, albeit as a villain. Created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) went on to star in his own mini-series. He eventually gained notoriety for his dark humor, meta-commentary, and affinity for breaking the fourth wall. Over the years, Deadpool has teamed up with or battled alongside Marvel's hero gallery and has since become one of the brand's most popular characters. In fact, according to Gitnux Marketdata Report, he's the most liked character on Facebook. So take that, Iron Man!

Not many shows avoided controversy and appeased mass audiences quite like Friends. Thirty years after its premiere, however, our perception of the series has evolved.
Some say that the show used jokes that capitalized on the intolerant views of the 1990s without any regard for actual wit or intelligence. Others claim that the NBC megahit emulated other better programs, such as Living Single, profiting off of superior greatness without ever crediting its inspiration. No matter what anyone thinks of this David Crane and Marta Kauffman-created series, Friends remains the most culturally relevant sitcom of its era.
Its themes and comfy aesthetics continue to engulf young and old viewers alike in a cozy realm of immature banter and authentic bonding, both platonic and romantic. The show gets millions of views monthly in cable syndication and streaming, making it a beloved fixture of the television zeitgeist a quarter into the 21st century.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum accused Joe Biden of “vote-buying going on at a scale like we have never seen before” because the president has forgiven student loan debt for nearly four million Americans.
“You start trying to give away hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer money… it’s like we’re borrowing to give it away… When you see those citizens understand those are like pre-election payoffs,” Burgum said on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday. “Those are like, ‘Hey, folks, please vote for us because we’re relieving your debt.
