Based on the book of the same name by Sarah Perry, which takes place in 1893. The story follows London widow Cora Seaborne who, after her brilliant, domineering husband dies, moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. Veteran actress Julie Walters says sharing screen space with young actress Dixie Egerickx in The Secret Garden was not like working with another child in a lot of ways.
Praising the 15-year-old Egerickx, who plays Mary Lennox in the film, Walters, 70, said, "Dixie is extraordinary, she is incredibly bright, she is a really good actress! It would be interesting to see whether she chooses acting later or what she will choose because she is clearly adept at most things."
"It's not like working with another child in a lot of ways, you can have proper chats. I mean we have been discussing Donald Trump and all sorts," she added.
The film is an adaptation of the 1911 classic novel of the same name, by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Ever since the super low budget and criminally underrated Disappearance of Alice Creed (if you have not seen it check it out), I have been a big fan of Gemma Arterton; she is easily in the top 5 or 6 actresses we have on our British shores. So with that in mind, I am always keen to see the latest films she features in. Sprinkle in a whole dose of actual global virus events and a somewhat upbeat hopeful movie about evacuees during World War 2 might just be what the doctor ordered…

A thousand embroidery hoops, T-shirts and posters on Etsy regularly remind us that well-behaved women rarely make history. On the British High Street and in daily life, by contrast, little girls are assailed by messages telling them to sparkle, be kind and smile. So how do girls learn to stop sparkling and start behaving badly? They find role models; in music, in their friendship circles, on the big and small screen and between the pages of their favourite books.
Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden featured one such role model. An audaciously rude girl called Mary Lennox who, we learn, by six years old was “as tyrannical and selfish a little pig as ever lived”. Young readers, and the grown-ups they became, have long been enchanted by Mary’s evolution from brat to heroine and the healing powers of the hidden garden she seeks refuge in, which changes the lives of everyone who enters.

To celebrate the release of The Secret Garden, which arrives in UK cinemas and on Sky Cinema this Friday, we sat down with its cast to find out why the story is still one of the most beloved in literature and on film.
Based on the legendary book by Francis Hodgson Burnett, the new film sees Mary Lennox (Egerickx) head to Yorkshire to live with her uncle, Lord Archibald Craven (Colin Firth), and soon stumbles upon the magical titular garden and all the wonders within. Both Egerickx, Wilson, and co-star Isis Davis gave us their thoughts on why the book has endured for so long, why its characters and the world they inhabit is so alluring to audiences, and why, right now, a film like this is very much needed.
You can view the full interviews below:

Exhibitors despaired as none of the new releases last weekend could catch the fourth frame of Warner Bros’ crowd-pleaser Tenet and no title cracked $1 million.
Positioned to cash in on school vacations which are underway in Queensland and start in other states this weekend, Universal’s Trolls World Tour launched brightly after several weeks of paid previews.
Studiocanal’s The Secret Garden, the fourth adaptation of the Frances Hodgson Burnett novel, was less luminous but will hit its stride when kids are on holiday.
Sony Pictures’ The Broken Hearts Gallery is an appealing, well-crafted rom-com but it won few hearts, mirroring its meagre results in the US.
Palace’s French whodunit The Translators was the stand-out limited release while first-time feature director Hayley MacFarlane’s Swimming for Gold did Ok.

Children’s fantasy media has long been one of Britain’s chief exports. From Peter Pan to The Chronicles of Narnia, to Harry Potter, the UK has been entertaining audiences around the world with stories of magic. But though Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 novel, The Secret Garden, is a classic of British children’s literature, it is not an example of children’s fantasy. Nor did it ever pretend to be. Rather Burnett’s prose led its readers through a tale of catharsis and wonder that takes place completely in a setting that obeys recognizable laws of horticulture. We need both kinds of stories. One kind of story allows us to escape into a world where anything is possible while the other suggests that we can find happiness and healing in a world that acts like our own. The distinction matters, and it’s one that the latest film adaptation of The Secret Garden,...

There’s always been magic in Frances Hodgson Burnett’s “The Secret Garden,” a classic children’s story that, for all its harsh lessons about the nature of the world, relies on some pretty strange twists of fate to deliver its story. We’re talking, of course, about the robin redbreast, a cheery, chattering little bird responsible for one of the story’s biggest revelations. While Burnett’s 1911 novel never shied from the rough stuff — like most of her work, the book is concerned with orphans and illness — it used real-world pains to make its pleasures richer. And still, even it relied on a plucky robin to guide its heroine, the sassy Mary Lennox, to a literal key that opens the titular Secret Garden.
Yes, magic is part of Burnett’s world, but the story’s latest big-screen adaptation stretches that concept to strange ends, and not all of them benefit the film.

Ever since David Lynch, decades ago, flirted with the prospect of making a film of “The Secret Garden,” Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 children’s novel, I’ve always leaned toward thinking it could make a great movie — and I’ve always imagined that movie as a spooky, earthy Lynchian dream, since that so connects with my memories of the book as a child. It was read aloud to my fourth-grade class, and every time the characters entered the garden of the title, it seemed to be as romantically odd and mysterious a place as Wonderland or Oz: a lushly eerie gothic Eden — a paradise that could restore life because, ironically, it held memories of death. But translating the somber magic of the book to the big screen has proved to be an elusive challenge.

Summerland is a sweet drama set in the English countryside during WWII, about a reclusive, curmudgeonly writer who has her heart softened by a young refugee who has been sent to her Sussex village to escape the London Blitz. Gemma Arterton is delightful as the author but everything about writer/director Jessica Swale’s warm-hearted story is a bit too neat and perfect to be believable, much like the folk tales and myths about which the central character writes.
Playwright Jessica Swale makes her feature film debut with Summerland, which stars Gemma Arterton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who also appeared in Swale’s Olivier Award-winning play “Nell Gwynn.”

As far as feature debuts for a writer/director go, there have been few as rewarding as Summerland, the first endeavor from award-winning playwright turned filmmaker Jessica Swale. Utilizing breathtaking English locations and anchoring a wartime drama that sneaks in a wickedly effective love story, replete with fine performances all around, Summerland is that rarest of experiences, a film that somehow manages to make everything in it seem fresh, bright, and new again.

Tucked in her seaside cottage, clattering away at her typewriter, and smoking like a chimney, Alice Lamb (Gemma Arterton) doesn’t fit in with her buttoned-up small-town Kent neighbors. Perhaps it’s the townsfolk’s predilection for referring to her as a witch? Or the punk kids who shove trash into her mailbox and run off screaming? Maybe the elder statesman who tells Alice she’s all but asking to be shunned by, what, simply existing? Alice is an outsider and disinterested in playing nice with her community; that’s the sort of thing that would bother her neighbors even during regular times, but Alice is the product of Jessica Swale’s “Summerland,” set in the heat of World War II, even if the bombs are falling miles and miles away.

In a cozy, seaside cottage in Kent, with the winds of WWII still at a distance, Alice Bloom (Gemma Arterton) bangs out academic theses about folklore on her typewriter and launches verbal attacks on neighbors who dare to interrupt her work. The locals have the swaggering, chainsmoking Alice pegged as a witch who’s probably signaling the Nazis from her perch over the white cliffs. The Brit villagers are not even half right — but oh, does she have anger to spare. Her reveries concern a torrid affair with Vera ((Gugu Mbatha-Raw...

Lionsgate UK has launched a new trailer for ‘Summerland’ starring Gemma Arterton.
The film follows the story of fiercely independent folklore investigator, Alice (Gemma Arterton) who secludes herself in her clifftop study, debunking myths using science to disprove the existence of other-worldly forces and magic. Consumed by her work, but also profoundly lonely, she is haunted by a love affair from her past.
When spirited young Frank, an evacuee from the London Blitz, is dumped into her irritable care, his innocence and wonder unlock deeply buried and painful secrets in Alice’s past and make her re-evaluate what it really means to free your imagination. Bravely embracing life’s miraculous unpredictability, Alice learns that wounds may be healed, hope and second chances do exist, and any woman must defiantly be two things: who and what she wants.

"Here we are. So I say, 'make the most of it!'" IFC Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Summerland, which is of course being released this summer (because how could you release a film called Summerland at any other time other than the summer?!). Set during World War II in the UK, the film is about a lonely writer who must care for a young boy evacuated from London. She slowly begins to form a bond with him, while reminiscing about her own life and long lost lover. Gemma Arterton stars as Alice, joined by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Penelope Wilton, Amanda Root, Siân Phillips, Dixie Egerickx, and Tom Courtenay. Described as an "intensely emotional story of love's endurance in trying times." It looks like a good tearjerker, and a film about how tough it is for everyone during wartime. View the trailer below. Colin Firth in ‘The Secret Garden.’
On the reasonable assumption that cinemas are trading in July, albeit with staggered seating, audiences can look forward to a raft of Hollywood films and, perhaps, several new Australian releases.
Distributors have started scheduling titles in an orderly fashion, avoiding a logjam of product, from early July until the end of the year and beyond.
Exhibitors expect that if the 4 square metre distancing rule applies, that will limit the average capacity to around 33 per cent, which would be viable for cinemas and distributors.
Executives on both sides of the fence are confident business will rebound quickly. “I don’t think it will take long for punters to return to cinemas; people are tired of the restrictions Covid-19 has placed on their lives and there is a desire to return to normalcy,” says Studiocanal CEO Elizabeth Trotman.

When I saw there was another remake of the classic story The Secret Garden, I rolled my eyes because I, just like you, am tired of the remakes, and we already have a bunch of this particular story. My favorite being the 1987 TV movie version, featuring a very young Colin Firth, that my mom recorded for me on a VHS tape that I watched over and over. It was a really good movie. Then there was also the 1993 version, which was pretty good too. But upon watching this trailer, I was won over. It’s so beautiful, and an exciting new version my kids will like. Fun fact: this new film also features Colin Firth. My husband says he just can’t escape that damn garden!
