Emma Stone won the Best Actress Oscar in 2017 for her role as an actress trying to make it big in Damien Chazelle‘s “La La Land.” Stone has also earned two Best Supporting Actress bids, the first in 2015 for “Birdman” and the second for “The Favourite” in 2019. She reteams with the latter’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, for Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things.” The film, which is out in US theaters on Dec. 8, follows Stone as Bella Baxter — a woman brought back to life by a scientist (Willem Dafoe) and subsequently goes on a journey of self-discovery, meeting a variety of people along the way including a lawyer (Mark Ruffalo) and a potential suitor (Ramy Youssef).
Stone’s performance is remarkable here, as many critics have noted.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) declared that Stone will “blow your mind” in the movie, writing: “Nothing overshadows Stone’s odd, amusing and affecting performance as Bella,...

It's hard to believe that yesterday somehow wasn't a national holiday, given that a new Hayao Miyazaki film screened at the Toronto Film Festival last night. The director's widely-praised collaboration with Studio Ghibli definitely counts as a reason to celebrate, particularly when so much of the hype around "The Boy and the Heron" has focused on the possibility that it would be the esteemed filmmaker's last movie ever. Thankfully, those reports have been debunked and it appears Miyazaki is once again pulling his patented "unretired" routine that anime fans know all too well. But even with that extra layer of context now removed, critics have already begun to weigh in on their emotional experience watching this latest project.
Nobody would be surprised to hear that the man behind such classics as "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind," "Castle in the Sky," "My Neighbor Totoro," and "The Wind Rises" --...

AFI Fest programmers have orchestrated closing night festivities that will feature a screening of Bradley Cooper’s Maestro at Hollywood’s Tcl Chinese Theatre on Oct. 29.
In the Netflix film, which Cooper directed, Cooper stars opposite Carey Mulligan, Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Sarah Silverman and others in a love story that chronicles the lifelong relationship between composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and actress Felicia Montealegre (Mulligan). The film was co-written by Cooper and Josh Singer and produced by Cooper, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Fred Berner, Amy Durning and Kristie Macosko Krieger.
“Maestro displays Bradley Cooper’s symphony of talent with the power of a cymbal crash,” offered AFI’s president and CEO Bob Gazzale.
The film had its world premiere as part of the competition selection at the Venice Film Festival, where THR chief film critic David Rooney called it a “soaring crescendo into sorrow.” Rooney writes, “As much as a...

Has Sofia Coppola done it again? The acclaimed writer/director is currently putting together what kids these days would call a "heater," riding high on streak of well-received movies between 2017's remake of "The Beguiled," "On the Rocks" in 2020, and now "Priscilla." The biopic of Priscilla Presley, Elvis' wife and a thoroughly compelling firebrand in her own right, stars Cailee Spaeny as the title character opposite Jacob Elordi as the famous singer. Marking a stark departure from director Baz Luhrmann's approach in last year's "Elvis," Coppola set out to tell the story from the perspective of someone who hasn't really received much of a spotlight in history, rather than confining a figure as important as Priscilla to a bit role or a supporting player on the margins.
Based on Priscilla Presley's memoir "Elvis and Me," the film just held its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and has...

A month away from potentially receiving his first Emmy nomination, Michael Shannon is branching out into directing with “Eric Larue,” Brett Neveu’s adaptation of his own 2002 play. Following a mother seeking some semblance of normalcy in a town rocked by the horrific act of violence perpetrated by her son against three classmates, the movie just premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival to significant acclaim for its leading lady, veteran character actor Judy Greer. Considering the subject, comparisons to “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “Mass” are unsurprising.
Alexander Skarsgård co-stars as Greer’s born-again husband, and Paul Sparks (with whom Shannon has worked on “Boardwalk Empire” and “Waco”), Alison Pill (“The Newsroom”), Tracy Letts (“Lady Bird”), Annie Parisse (“The Following”), Kate Arrington (“George & Tammy”) and Nation Sage Henrikson (“Shameless”) comprise the rest of the main cast. David Rooney (The Hollywood Reporter) calls the acting “uncommonly strong across...

The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin), the first Irish-language film nominated for an Academy Award for best international feature, will receive special recognition at the 17th annual Oscar Wilde Awards next month.
First-time feature director Colm Bairéad and producer Cleona Ní Chrualaoí will be on hand March 9 at Bad Robot, the Santa Monica production company of J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath, to accept the award for the film.
Created by the US-Ireland Alliance, the Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to the movies, television and music. This marks the first time a film is being honored.
“For An Cailín Ciúin to be in the final five, in a category with more than 90 eligible films, is a massive achievement,” Trina Vargo, founder of the US-Ireland Alliance, said in a statement. “It’s lovely to see Irish-language films receiving more attention...

‘True History of the Kelly Gang’ (Photo credit: Memento Films International/Ben King).
IFC Films’ acquisition of North American rights to Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang before the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival now seems savvy in light of the rave reviews.
Meanwhile Unjoo Moon’s debut narrative feature I Am Woman was lauded by some critics for Tilda Cobham-Hervey’s breakout performance as Helen Reddy after it opened the festival’s special presentations section.
IFC Films distributed Kurzel’s debut Snowtown, also penned by Shaun Grant, and currently is handling Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale, which is playing on 79 screens in its sixth weekend in the Us and has grossed $US383,000.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with the assured IFC Films in North America and very excited to see the film go out in the world now,” says Porclight’s Liz Watts,...

Reviews are in for Todd Phillips' standalone origin story Joker, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic villain.
The film, written by Phillips and Scott Silver, is described as a gritty portrayal of a character ostracized by society. Robert De Niro, Marc Maron and Zazie Beetz also star.
For The Hollywood Reporter, David Rooney declares the film "grippingly atmospheric," highlighting the sensational, unsettling and weirdly affecting performance from Phoenix who inhabits the Joker with an insanity both pitiful and fearsome. "He brings pathos to a pathetically disenfranchised character," emphasizes the critic. Rooney goes on to suggest that ...

The chance to see indie film darling Kristen Stewart as “Breathless” actress and French New Wave icon Jean Seberg made Benedict Andrews’ “Seberg” one of the most anticipated titles premiering out of competition at Venice. Unfortunately, the biographical drama is being met with middling reviews following its festival debut. “Seberg” is shaping up to be one of Venice’s big disappointments, but it has nothing to do with Stewart’s leading role. As usual, Stewart is being met with critical raves across the board. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called “Seberg” a “mess from start to finish” in his C- review but had nothing but praise for Stewart.
“Pivoting away from low-status, high-quality parts that contradict her outsized public persona, Stewart embraces her uncharacteristically glamorous and headstrong role — one iconic actress possessing the spirit of another,” Ehrlich writes. “The most engaging scenes in ‘Seberg’ invite her to own her power, and...
