Melbourne, Dec 21 (Ians) Veteran David Warner goes into Boxing Day without a Test ton in almost three years, but his long-time teammate Steve Smith on Wednesday backed the Australia opener to turn things around in the second against South Africa and deliver under pressure, saying that “when his back’s up against the wall, he’s done pretty well”.
Warner is running out of chances to bow out of red-ball cricket on his own terms after being removed for a golden duck and three by South Africa spearhead Kagiso Rabada during the two-day Gabba Test to open the three-match series.
The 36-year-old has not made a Test century since January 2020, and failed to pass 50 against West Indies during big wins in Perth and Adelaide.
The star opener hopes to play Test cricket until at least the end of next year’s Ashes, with a tour of India looming before the five-match series in England.

Brisbane, Dec 18 (Ians) With the first Test between Australia and South Africa ending within two days, the pitch at the Gabba ground has come in for severe criticism with Proteas skipper Dean Elgar terming it “unsafe” for batters.
A total of 34 wickets fell within two days.South Africa were shot out for 152 and 99 runs in two innings while Australia were bundled out for 216 in their first innings and struggled for 35/4 in their second innings to win the match by six wickets on Sunday.
In all, 19 wickets fell on the second day on a green top wicket that offered a lot of assistance to both teams’ pace attacks.
Elgar said the track started developing divots on the first day which dried out and caused further problems on the second day.
‘It’s full of grass, there’s no need for such heavy grass material. Because it is too sealed.’ You have to ask yourself,...

Brisbane, Dec 15 (Ians) Interim South Africa men’s head coach Malibongwe Maketa has no doubt that the Proteas are heading in the right direction as they build towards the first Test against Australia in Brisbane over the weekend.
The tourists drew their only warm-up fixture — a four-day encounter against a Cricket Australia XI played at The Allan Border Field in Brisbane — with most of their batters enjoying some much-needed time in the middle.
Batting had been an area of concern for the Dean Elgar-led side after their last tour to England earlier when the team struggled for big runs, albeit in difficult batting conditions and lost the series 2-1. Now Maketa is optimistic of their prospects in the first of three Tests starting at The Gabba on Saturday.
