“You killed my son! And, now, I kill you and I can’t think of anything more rational.”
Compared to traditional slasher fare, there are many things that set the Scream franchise apart: multiple survivors, metatextual commentary, Matthew Lillard, the list goes on and on. But one of the most unique aspects of this beloved string of films is the fact that anyone and everyone could be the killer. With no supernatural elements or sub-human weapon-wielders, only a confirmed kill can eliminate a character from the suspect list. Many charismatic villains have donned the ominous Ghostface mask, but none so complex as the one revealed in Scream 2. Running on vengeance, grief, and motherly love, Mrs. Loomis (Laurie Metcalf) manipulates a psychotic young man and picks up the knife herself in an elaborate plan to seek revenge for the death of her son.

It’s been a busy week for Ghostface Killah. He just dropped Set the Tone: Guns & Roses, a 19-track project that’s his first since 2019’s Ghostface Killahs. Within the same week, he released Rise of a Killah, a memoir published by Martin’s Press. Between fulfilling the obligations of dropping a new project and a new memoir, the iconic Mc found time for an early-evening Zoom session. He is in a good mood while reclining in a seat, occasionally showing off the inimitable phrasing that’s made him one...

The MTV Movie & TV Awards is taking another break. Variety has confirmed that the event, which would have normally taken place around this time of year, will instead sit 2024 out — with an eye toward returning next year, perhaps in a different, “reimagined” format.
It’s been a bumpy decade for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which first began in 1992 (as the MTV Movie Awards). Last’s year’s event was forced to pivot to a pre-taped clip show in light of the Hollywood writers’ strike, as host Drew Barrymore bowed out and the WGA announced plans to picket the ceremony.
Meanwhile, in 2020, the MTV Movie & TV Awards also didn’t take place, due in part to the Covid-19 pandemic, but also because the network had planned to move the franchise (long a spring/early summer staple) to December. Ultimately, instead of an awards show, MTV ran a “MTV Movie & TV...

Movie promotion can get more creative these days with the use of social media. Sometimes, staged moments in public also enhance the “viral” intention. Years ago, stories made the rounds of creepy clown sightings spotted in neighborhood areas, complete with haunting pictures of said clowns standing eerily still. The sensation coincidentally would do wonders for the release of the It films, and similar viral marketing was attempted with the Ghostface killer for the new Scream movies. Low and behold, The Strangers – Chapter 1 is about to be released by Lionsgate and the movie is all about property invasion by mysteriously scary figures.
The new film from Renny Harlin is getting in on the action as costumed killer characters were seen at Coachella as well as creepy viral footage of these characters appearing on Ring cameras as they stalk on doorsteps. People Magazine has now reported that Lionsgate would attempt to reach...

Spoilers: In addition to Scream 2, this article will have spoilers for every other movie in the franchise.
We all know that one of the big draws of the Scream franchise is Ghostface’s identity. But some are a lot harder to figure out who is behind the mask than others. The big surprise in 1996’s original wasn’t that it was Billy or Stu, it was that it was Billy and Stu. And nobody was surprised when freaky Tarantino film student Mickey turned out to be one of the killers in Scream 2. The same could be said of Debbie Salt – after all, why put a prominent actress like Laurie Metcalf in a seemingly thankless role? But Metcalf thinks her Scream 2 reveal still ranks as the best in the franchise’s history.
Speaking with Collider, Laurie Metcalf stated bluntly, “I think in the Scream movies, my character has the best reveal.

Rap legends Ghostface Killah and Nas collaborated on “Scar Tissue,” a single from the Wu-Tang rapper’s upcoming Set The Tone album. The T The Human-produced track showcases the two New York rap stalwarts rhyming back-to-back over a Far East-flavored sample. “Scar Tissue” is their first collaboration since 1995’s “Verbal Intercourse” on Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Some listeners may be disappointed by a homophobic slur Ghostface uses on the track, but “Scar Tissue” nonetheless primes his fanbase for Set The Tone, his 12th studio album.

When the opening scene ended with a pretty cool and gory death, in what was a traditional but fun slasher film build-up, my hopes were kind of high. It feels like we have had very few new slasher movie villains to get excited about. Of course, Michael Myers, Chucky, Ghostface and more are still going strong but other than Art the Clown in the Terrifier franchise, no one seems to have lasted for more than one movie in more recent times. So when Randy Couture is standing tall as Hank, giant axe in hand, things were looking up. But the movie doesn’t quite pan out the way I was expecting.
The Bell Keeper follows a group of friends, including two brothers, who travel to a campsite at Lake Bell.

Scream, starring Drew Barrymore, is one of the best horror films of this generation. Helmed by Wes Craven, this slasher film marked the beginning of a franchise that has become a sort of guilty pleasure for movie lovers.
The film stood out in a lot of ways, but most importantly, it successfully revived the horror genre, which had become a little stale. The director and the creative heads deftly made use of scare tactics for maximum effect. This was not just limited to the audience, though. Even the cast was unaware of the identity of the actor who played Ghostface, which only added to the atmosphere the film aimed to create.

It takes The Matrix about three minutes to become the coolest thing you’ve ever seen. That’s when Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) evades a cop by breaking his arm, punching his throat, and then freezing mid-air so the camera can whip around her before she unleashes a kick that sends him across the room. Three minutes. And everything changed.
But the most impressive part may be the fact that the amazing stuff doesn’t stop there. For the 117 minutes that follow, The Matrix directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski offer an improbable mix of kung fu action, Continental philosophy, and fin de siècle cool. It’s no wonder their movie became a hit in theaters and on video. Nor is it any wonder that so, so many movies and TV shows borrowed from The Matrix, at once cementing the original film’s legacy while also cheapening its effect. In immediate years...

Xoxo, Upper East Siders. Chuck Bass is getting married and Lily Van Der Woodsen is invited.
“I miss that character, but I am still in touch with almost everyone from the show. I am going to Ed’s [Westwick] wedding and I am so excited,” admitted “Gossip Girl” star Kelly Rutherford at French TV festival Series Mania.
In the “still relevant” show, she played the impossibly glamorous mother of Blake Lively’s Serena.
“It was before this whole super politically correct time. We were on the verge of it and there is just a different energy about it. After the first season, we knew [it was huge].”
“Gossip Girl” ended in 2012.
“The women I grew up with were very chic, but I hadn’t really seen a mother like that on TV. I didn’t realize how much people loved Lily – until now. At first, it was all about these kids. We were just parents.

Actress Sydney Sweeney decided to play the Horror edition of F**k, Marry, Kill game with fellow actress Simona Tabasco in order to promote their 2024 movie Immaculate. The game gave Sweeney and Tabasco a wide variety of characters from popular horror movies and they had to decide who they wanted to f**k, marry or kill.
A still from Immaculate
Judging by her choices, it seems like Sweeney is attracted to masked men as she chose to f**k Michael Meyers when she was asked to choose between Leatherface, Ghostface, and Michael Meyers. Earlier in the game, Tabasco and Sweeney agreed that they would have s*x with Jack Torrence from The Shining because they thought he was hot.

Sydney Sweeney (“The White Lotus”, “Euphoria”) stars in Neon’s new psychological horror film Immaculate, which has been generating a whole lot of buzz out of SXSW this week.
The film comes to movie theaters nationwide on March 22, 2024, and Neon has put together a unique piece of promo marketing this week. They got Sydney Sweeney and co-star Simona Tabasco to play “Fuck, Marry, Kill”… and all the choices are horror movie villains!
“Fuck, Marry, Kill: Horror Edition” features icons like Leatherface, Chucky, Hannibal Lecter, Pinhead, and Michael Myers. Who would Sydney Sweeney kill? Ghostface and Pinhead, for starters. Who would she marry? Believe it or not, Leatherface! As for the other one, we’ll let Sweeney explain in her own words: “I’m gonna fuck Mike Myers.” Hey, we don’t judge!

Within the reality of the Scream films, the murders committed by various maniacs wearing Ghostface costumes have inspired a franchise of movies called Stab – and in Scream (2022), we saw a glimpse of a moment in Stab 8 that showed a different sort of Ghostface. This one worn a metallic mask, had short sleeves on their costume, and was blasting away at someone with a flamethrower. Now the collectible makers at Neca have taken to social media to reveal that their latest Ghostface action figure is inspired by that moment in Scream (2022) / Stab 8! With spoilers, details have emerged about how Melissa Barrera was to be central to the ongoing Scream series, before her dismissal.
Warning: contains spoilers for some of the Scream films
The award for the most spectacular implosion that we’ve seen happen to a project in the past year undoubtedly goes to Spyglass Entertainment for Scream VII. Following two well-received entries that reignited an ageing series, Spyglass had that most valuable of Hollywood commodities in its possession: a franchise in the ascendancy.
Then came a string of bafflingly poor decisions: refusing to meet the price tag of series mainstay, Neve Campbell. Sacking Melissa Barrera, the new lead of the franchise for publicly expressing humanitarian ideals. Allowing Jenna Ortega, one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars to exit the series, with the timing of her departure making it appear as though she’d left in solidarity with Barrera.

A generally accepted truth amongst filmmakers is that making a horror movie is typically a light-hearted affair behind the scenes, given all the gore and traumatic mayhem happening while cameras are rolling. While that may be true, there's no doubt that making horror happen in front of those cameras requires a lot of blood, sweat and tears — and not always of the special-effects variety. Some of those substances can end up being very real, even unintentionally so.

In the years since this column’s debut, ’90s horror movies have actually found a sizable and heartwarming amount of rediscovery and reappreciation. Physical media has resurrected and restored numerous films to the point where even derided efforts like my beloved I Still Know What You Did Last Summer can get a celebratory 4K upgrade. With this new outlook, horror culture is starting to better redefine the historical landscape of the decade. The conversation is no longer enveloped by the shadow of Ghostface.

Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega reunited with the Scream cast at MPTF’s 17th Annual Evening Before Gala.
Barrera and Ortega reassembled the “Core 4” that included Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, who have been together since the film franchise’s reboot with 2022’s Scream V and 2023’s Scream VI.
The reunion also included cast members Liana Liberato, Tony Revolori, Jack Quaid and Barrera’s on-screen father and Og Ghostface Skeet Ulrich. See the video below.
Barrera was dropped from Scream VII after the star shared a social media post about the Israel-Hamas conflict. Spyglass Media believed Barrera’s stance on the conflict was antisemitic and said in a statement, “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
Days later, Barrera would break her silence...

Being set around Halloween, Scream VI was packed with immediately recognizable horror costumes. Jason Voorhees. Freddy Krueger. Michael Myers. Pinhead. Not to mention Ghostface. They were all in there. But during a party scene, one of the characters is wearing a costume you might not recognize. It’s a knight’s suit of armor, but made out of cardboard. That’s the same costume the protagonist in the 2007 horror comedy Murder Party (watch it Here) wears. If you didn’t recognize it, then we have to tell you all about Murder Party – because it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Murder Party was the feature directorial debut of Jeremy Saulnier, who has gone on to direct films like the revenge thriller Blue Ruin, the neo-Nazi horror film Green Room, and the mystery thriller Hold the Dark, as well as episodes of True Detective season 3. Saulnier also wrote the screenplay for the film.

The biggest twists in the new era of the "Scream" franchise continue to take place off screen: filmmaker Christopher Landon has confirmed via X that he is no longer directing "Scream 7," the embattled upcoming sequel that's already lost stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. "I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago," the "Freaky" director wrote in a post today. "This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare."
Though more complete details about the making of "Scream 7" will likely only emerge over time, plenty of controversy has taken place publicly ahead of the film's production. Original franchise star Neve Campbell chose not to return to the series beginning with "Scream 6," citing a disappointing pay offer. Campbell used the experience as a chance to speak up about lowballing in Hollywood,...

A Closer Look at Sidney Prescott’s Legacy When we think of the Scream franchise, it’s impossible not to picture Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, the resilient survivor who has dodged Ghostface’s blade through decades of terror. Her character is not just a staple of the series; she’s become synonymous with the term “final girl,” a beacon of survival and strength in the slasher genre. For 25-plus years, Campbell has been the face of Scream, starring in the first five installments as beloved heroine Sidney Prescott, until she decided to sit out this year’s Scream VI. Sidney has always been the beating...

For characters in the Scream movies, it’s wise never to answer the phone — lest Ghostface be on the other end of the line. But after a tumultuous few months for the franchise, Scream studio Spyglass is likely hoping its calls will indeed go answered as it attempts to keep its next installment from getting the ax amid a major casting shakeup and subsequent creative pivot.
On Nov. 21, it broke that Spyglass had fired Melissa Barrera from the upcoming seventh Scream movie over social media posts that company decision-makers characterized as antisemitic. Sources note the firing actually came a month earlier, in the early weeks of the Israel-Hamas war, when Barrera had become increasingly vocal. Before her firing, sources say her deal to return as Sam Carpenter, the lead character she introduced in 2022’s Scream, had been finalized.

In the wake of the news that "Scream" star Melissa Barrera had been removed from "Scream VII" by Spyglass Media Group over social media comments that the company deemed antisemitic, it was announced today that another member of the "core four" would not be returning for the slasher sequel, albeit under different circumstances. According to Deadline, Jenna Ortega, who played Barrera's younger sister in the franchise, is not expected to return for the next installment of the franchise. Deadline reports that Ortega's departure is unrelated to Barrera's firing and that her exit had been discussed prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. This was also confirmed by sources to The Hollywood Reporter.
Deadline confirms Ortega is heading to Ireland in April to film season 2 of "Wednesday" for Netflix, which is anticipated to shoot well into the summer. This would certainly make appearing in "Scream VII" a difficult task. As was noted yesterday,...

Who knew that it wouldn’t be Ghostface who killed off the main characters of the ‘Scream’ franchise? Instead, it would be a controversial firing and some scheduling issues (reportedly).
According to a new report from Deadline, it appears Jenna Ortega is also bowing out of the ‘Scream’ franchise, as the development of “Scream VII” continues. The reason given is the impending shooting schedule for “Wednesday,” which is clearly Ortega’s bigger priority.

Scream 7 is going to be a very different movie than we were expecting it to be when it was first announced. Although the 2022 Scream film introduced new lead characters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, and Scream VI saw the Carpenter sisters solidifying their connection with the Meeks-Martin twins (Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy and Mason Gooding as Chad) to call themselves the new “core four” characters of the franchise… at least half of the core four as going to be absent from Scream 7. Yesterday, we learned that Barrera has been fired from the film after making controversial comments on social media. Now Deadline has confirmed that Ortega will also be missing from the new sequel.

New York City has honored the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard with his own day shortly after Mayor Eric Adams declared November 9th as Wu-Tang Day. As reported by Gothamist, November 15th will now be known as Ol’ Dirty Bastard Day following a resolution passed by the City Council earlier this week.
A founding member of Wu-Tang Clan, Ol’ Dirty Bastard (born Russell Jones) was born on November 15th, 1968, and died in 2004 of an accidental drug overdose — just two days short of his 36th birthday. This past November 15th would have been his 55th birthday.
Sponsored by Democratic Councilmember Chi Ossé, the resolution passed with 39 City Council members voting in favor and five against. “It being the 50th year of hip-hop, I wanted to recognize some of my personal favorite artists and contributors to the culture,” Ossé told City & State New York. “He’s from Central Brooklyn. We do rep Odb in the Brooklyn Zoo.

Behaviour Interactive’s global multiplayer horror video game Dead by Daylight celebrated its 7th anniversary earlier this year, and it’s still adding new content. In fact, the game is going to be receiving a major update on November 28th – as that’s the day the iconic killer doll Chucky is going to be added into the mix! The news of Chucky’s addition was broken by IGN, and they were even able to confirm that Brad Dourif is providing Chucky’s voice for the game. Behaviour informed them that players will be able to customize Chucky’s appearance with the Good Gal outfit – which will turn him into his bride Tiffany Valentine, voiced by Jennifer Tilly.
IGN notes, “As you’d expect, Chucky is adept at sneaking around the map, and he has a Slice & Dice ability that lets him lunge at his larger would-be victims in order to more efficiently close the gap.

If you’ve seen any horror movie, it’s no secret some of our favorite classics fall into sexist tropes, most often with the final girl in slashers being innocent and virginal while her counterpart that engages in “sinful” behavior gets the ultimate punishment.
Instead of submitting to the male gaze, these feminist horror flicks and thrillers pave a way forward for the genre, one that encourages complex female relationships, destigmatizes female sexuality and fights to avenge patriarchal society that has oppressed these female heroines for ages.

On October 25, 2023, the Daily Mail posted an image depicting Art the Clown from the popular "Terrifier" slasher series in his holiday best — a Santa hat and the flayed face of Kris Kringle himself, wielding an axe in front of a Christmas tree. The bottom of the poster had "Damien Leone's Terrifier 3" listed as the title. Considering the abundance of fan art made from the film series, there was debate whether or not this was leaked promotional material or just a well-made bit of fantasy booking. Well, Bloody Disgusting and Cineverse have cleared the air to confirm that the poster was legitimate, and that "Terrifier 3" will be a Christmas horror movie.
The announcement comes paired with the theatrical re-release of the 2022 hit "Terrifer 2" on November 1, 2023, which will include an exclusive sneak peek teaser for the holiday horror slasher. "For those of you speculating that the 'Terrifier 3' teaser...

Stephen King once wrote that the "last reason for reading horror: it's a rehearsal for death. It's a way to get ready." I agree with that statement and believe it applies to watching horror, as well as reading it. Sure, there's something to be said about how watching people scream and die in terrible ways probably satisfies the morbid curiosity that resides in the more primordial parts of our brains. But King's quote serves as a more profound (and socially acceptable) explanation for our attraction to the stories about fictional characters shuffling off this mortal coil, and how they allow us to come into contact with the great beyond.
From a safe distance, that is.
However, for an unlucky number of actors and film crew members, death got a little too close during the making of several horror movies, whether it was freak accidents, production team negligence, or tyrannical directors pushing their crew to extremes.

The best thing about the "Scream" franchise is that, as far as most fans are concerned, there are no downright awful entries. Some movies are weaker than others, sure, but no movie was so bad that the series' creators had no choice but to reboot the entire thing. This is a series that builds on itself, embracing continuity and refusing to allow viewers to discard any of its entries. The "Star Wars" sequels pleased nobody when they tried to make "Rise of Skywalker" serve as a reversal of every controversial decision made in the previous film, but the "Scream" series has never made any such cowardly mistake. Every sequel matters in this franchise, no matter what. No movie is going to apologize for anything the last movie did.
Still, not all "Scream" movies are created equal. Some of them have tone problems, or lackluster killer reveals. Some of them are...

Every major holiday could stand to have a slasher movie themed around it, especially one with a sunny disposition masquerading the grim truth behind it like Thanksgiving. Such was Eli Roth's thinking when he made his fake "Thanksgiving" movie trailer for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's "Grindhouse" experiment back in 2007. Roth's original short is a collection of scenes of people getting brutally decapitated over the Thanksgiving holiday frame by a serial killer dressed as a Pilgrim. It's grotesque, juvenile, and tasteless. In other words, it's everything you either love or hate about Eli Roth's horror work in general.
16 years later, Roth has finally gone and turned "Thanksgiving" into a full-fledged film, just like the fake "Grindhouse" trailers turned actual films "Machete" and "Hobo with a Shotgun" before it. Roth's slasher also marks his return to the realm of hard R-rated genre fare after his brief detour into...

When Universal and Blumhouse announced that Matthew Lillard had joined the cast of "Five Nights at Freddy's" as a "human antagonist," it was assumed that he was playing the twisted franchise villain, William Afton. But "FNaF" fans aren't stupid, and the fandom is one of the most dedicated out there. You can't fool us, we know that man is William Afton.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Chris asks "What's your favorite scary movie?" with "Scream.")

It's also important to remember that "Scream" is scary.
