When the post-apocalyptic drama Finality of Dusk has its world premiere Friday at the Red Nation Film Festival in Los Angeles, it’s a good bet co-writer and Deaf filmmaker Katarina Ziervogel will be seated near to the back of the theater.
That’s because Ziervogel and sound design supervisor Daniel Pellerin shaped the sonic landscape for the indie Canadian film with increased bass and rumble to allow Finality of Dusk to not only bridge the hearing world and the Deaf world but also to allow deaf moviegoers to feel the film vibrating through their body in their seats.
“In the sound design, the bass has been increased to amplify vibrations which can be felt more intensely if you aim to sit in the middle to the back rows inside a movie theater,” Ziervogel, who co-wrote the film with director Madison Thomas, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Canadian horror Ditched opens with Melina, a paramedic, who wakes up in an overturned ambulance with no memory of the accident. With her are the rest of the ambulance crew, a cop who was escorting the ambulance in his car and two prisoners, one trapped in the cop car and the other strapped to a gurney in the ambulance – both of whom are prison medical transfers. It turns out though that the accident was anything but… The group quickly discover that they are the victims of an ambush and now they’re trapped in a ditch with someone or something outside just waiting to attack.

[This story contains spoilers for "The Traveler," the fourth episode of The Twilight Zone on CBS All Access.]
On a cold Christmas Eve in a small jail in Alaska, the local police captain (Greg Kinnear) is getting ready for his favorite yearly tradition: pardoning a prisoner. This festive setup opens up the fourth episode of Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone reboot, and once again presents an opportunity for a parable of our times, as on this most magical of nights a mysterious man (Steven Yeun) appears in the bowels of the prison, causing a young indigenous policewoman, Yuka (Marika Sila),...

"A Traveler," The Steven Yeun led hour of The Twilight Zone reboot, is the story of one man's heroic quest for a slice of pie.
This The Twilight Zone review contains spoilers.
The Twilight Zone Episode 4
When it comes to science fiction, the devil is in the details. Hell, when it comes to any piece of narrative art, the Morningstar remains in the minutiae.
That’s what makes the beginning of The Twilight Zone Episode 4, “A Traveler” so promising. The first quarter of “A Traveler” establishes its tone and world more effectively than any of the other three offerings thus far (save for maybe “The Comedian” and Kumail Nanjiani’s deliberately awful Second Amendment joke).
The first thing “A Traveler” presents to the viewer is the northern lights. Then the camera pans down and we’re in a cop car, speeding through the frozen darkness with Yuka (Marika Sila) and...

The signpost ahead reads “The Twilight Zone,” ushering viewers to a realm that at once feels familiar and yet is almost entirely new. Executive producers Jordan Peele and Simon Kinberg have reimagined Rod Serling’s classic horror/science-fiction/fantasy series from the ‘60s for a whole new generation.
At an event in Hollywood this year, Kinberg revealed why it was the perfect time to bring back the show. “I think the world all of a sudden was in desperate need of ‘The Twilight Zone,’” he said. ‘If you said three, four years ago that like a reality star who had no political experience will be the leader of the free world with access to the nuclear button, you think that’s a crazy ‘Twilight Zone’ episode.”
Kinberg also said that the vision Peele and CBS All Access had meshed with how to tell stories while pushing it to the limits.

“The Twilight Zone” was an idea machine. Led by prolific creator Rod Serling and his adventurous storytelling recruits, the episodic sci-fi anthology delighted and challenged viewers with its active creative ambitions and willingness to embrace taboo topics. But, despite first wrapping in 1964, “The Twilight Zone” didn’t go anywhere. The machine was self-sustaining, inspiring everything from ’80s and early aughts revivals to fresh original series like Fox’s “The X-Files” and HBO’s “Room 104.” Serling’s “dimension of imagination” never closed; just like the weekly episodes kept changing into something new, the series developed fresh for each new generation.
So the excitement surrounding the revived 2019 “Twilight Zone” isn’t really about resurrecting the old show. Sure, the eerie opening music and playful approach to ghastly one-off stories may trigger a touch of nostalgia for some, but what’s driving interest in the third official entry in the franchise is...
