Humor in Asian movies is a hit-or-miss deal, since the topicality of what funny means in each country makes understanding comedy outside of each country's borders a complicated endeavor. It turns out, however, that when the style of humor is of deadpan variety, it is much easier to be communicated. This is exactly the style Oh Ji-hyeon chose for her debut, “Knitting My Heart”.
Knitting My Heart is screening at Short Shorts Film Festival and Asia
The films starts with a man and a woman in the middle of living room, while a female voice states that no one has realized that she is on a hunger strike. The man has knitted her a red sweater and has her trying it on, in order to gift it to her for her birthday, but as the voice informs, which actually belongs to the ‘model', they have already passed. The discussion moves to the girl's belly button,...

Sandra Oh has come to realize that with great power comes great responsibility. Since wrapping up her run as Dr. Cristina Yang on the venerable ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy a decade ago, Oh has looked to champion stories that deconstruct and explore the nuances of Asian American identity.
Her latest TV project, The Sympathizer, which recently wrapped up its run on HBO, makes good on that promise. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen and co-created for television by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, the seven-part limited series tells the story of a man known simply as The Captain (Hoa Xuande), a police captain for South Vietnam who has actually been working as an undercover agent for North Vietnam’s Communist regime for years.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”
Aaron Pruner (The Wrap) observed: “Erskine, who many will recognize as the brace-faced 13-year old in Hulu comedy “PEN15,...

There's no denying that K-dramas have been at the top of their game for decades now, and it doesn't matter what genre they're in – they always try to attract as many viewers as possible.
However, one of the most popular genres of K-dramas is thriller, and with the way South Koreans approach their creations, it's clear that each one has many chances to be perfect.
Still, with the huge variety of things to see in the genre, there's one movie that is considered to be the best cat-and-mouse thriller ever created by the industry. It's without a doubt Park Chan Wook's 2003 movie called Oldboy.
Oldboy Turns Tables From the Start
The premise of the movie is quite unusual: we meet a rather unpleasant character, Oh Dae-Su, when he is being arrested for being drunk, but then after being taken to the police station he was kidnapped by unknown ones.

In 2019, Sandra Oh simultaneously received her seventh and eighth acting Emmy nominations for “Killing Eve” (drama lead) and “Saturday Night Live” (comedy guest). Five years later, her performance bid total is set to reach an even dozen thanks to her respective lead and supporting performances in the telefilm “Quiz Lady” and the limited series “The Sympathizer.” Earning TV academy recognition for these two roles would make her the eighth woman to compete for both possible limited program acting awards at once.
In “Quiz Lady,” which premiered on Hulu last November, Oh plays Jenny Yum, a vivacious yet reckless woman who reunites with her estranged younger sister (Awkwafina) to resolve their mother’s gambling debts. “The Sympathizer,” which began airing on HBO in April, features her in the role of Sofia Mori, a 1970s Japanese American secretary who becomes entangled with a communist spy (Hoa Xuande).

Even eight years since its release and with a fair few recent releases pushing for its spot, none have been able to push Ryoo Seung-wan's “Veteran” out of the top 5 highest grossing Korean films (by attendance) of all time. Talk of a part 2 has floated since the feature's immense success and the moment is finally here when it is gearing up for its world premiere, with the official title it borrows from Tai Kato's 1968 Japanese classic “I, the Executioner”.

75 films from 12 countries, 228 guests of honour and 65 thousand spectators. These are all the numbers of Udine Far East Film Festival 2024. There was an increase of accredited visitors (of 24% over 2023) and the screenings at Udine's 1,200-seat Teatro Nuovo venue were always full, from 9 in the morning to midnight. This says a lot about the growing interest in Asian Cinema.

Sandra Oh is stepping into her vice principal role from The Princess Diaries once again for a special reunion.
The actress reprised her Princess Diaries role as Vice Principal Geraldine Gupta on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Tuesday to introduce guest and her Princess Diaries co-star, Anne Hathaway. Hathaway played Princess Mia Thermopolis in the original 2001 film and its 2004 sequel.
For the introduction, Oh reenacted her famous scene from the film when she picks up the phone and says into the receiver, “Gupta. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm,” before hanging up and telling everyone, “The queen is coming.”

The observer and the observed. One passive, one active. One a cat, the other a mouse. One a potential victim, the other a potential victimiser. In short, this provocative relationship has been the lifeblood of thrillers big and small the world over since the beginning of cinema, and the camera itself has become an extension of the self as the medium has evolved…and mutated. And now, with advancements in technology making cameras smaller and smaller, their usage has become more and more insidious and dangerous. Yeon Je-gwang's “The Guest”, a stripped-back feature debut (adapted from his debut 2016 short) set in a seedy motel with a tiny cast, utilizes ideas old and technologies new to fuel some sick thrills across 77 minutes that leave you needing a hot shower to wash off its determinedly unpleasant aura.

Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.

About a month ago, “The Sympathizer” star Fred Nguyen Khan lost his grandmother.

This The Sympathizer review contains no spoilers.
Celebrated South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook takes his auteur-driven vision to HBO with the new television series The Sympathizer. Adapting the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen, the series follows a Vietnamese double agent after he flees the country, finding himself drawn deep into a strange juxtaposition of espionage and Hollywood filmmaking. With its off-kilter tone and a quartet of wonderfully weird performances from co-star and executive producer Robert Downey, Jr., The Sympathizer may not be everyone’s cup of tea but, what it does, it does very well.

The case of Yoo Young-chul was one that really shocked Korea. The 24-years-old man at the time of his arrest (2004) admitted to the murders of multiple people, mostly prostitutes and wealthy old women, and the Seoul Central District Court convicted him of 20 murders, although one case was dismissed when it was identified as being committed by another serial killer, Jeong Nam-gyu. Yoo burned three and mutilated at least 11 of his victims and admitted that he ate the livers of some of them. Yoo explained his motives in front of a TV camera saying “Women shouldn't be sluts, and the rich should know what they've done.” Three years after his sentence was carried out in 2005, Na Hong-jin came with one of the most impressive debuts in the history of Korean cinema, and one of the top crime thrillers ever to come out of the country (and the world), based on his story.

Oh Yeong-su, who won a Golden Globe for his performance in Netflix’s “Squid Game,” was found guilty of sexual misconduct by a South Korean court on Friday.
According to the New York Times, a district court judge in the city of Seongnam ruled that Oh was guilty of inappropriately touching an actress in 2017, including hugging her, holding her hand and kissing her cheek.
The 79-year-old Oh must serve an eight-month suspended sentence and take 40 hours of sexual violence classes. Oh has denied the charges and, according to the Times, told prosecutors on Friday that he plans to appeal the verdict.
Oh was initially charged in 2022 after a complaint was filed by an actress alleging that he inappropriately touched her. Judge Jeong Yeon-ju, who presided over the case, said that the actress received sexual violence counseling in 2018, but the success of “Squid Game” in 2021 prompted her to demand an apology from Oh.

Family will break your heart and bruise your heart and mend your heart like no one else can — not always in that order, and sometimes all three at once. In his exceptional, happy-sad-funny debut film “House of the Seasons,” Oh Jung-min creates a beautiful tapestry of intimate sprawl, as three generations of a meddlesome, quarrelsome, loving Korean clan experience all the colors of familial life while the hills of their village home phase from lush green to copper and russet to stark, snowy white.
Through clean bright clouds of clearing steam, we’re invited into the small Daegu Village tofu factory owned and run by the Kim family. Hae-sook (Cha Mi-kyeong), the careworn, efficient wife of the factory’s flighty current boss Tae-geun (Oh Man-seok) is taking special care with this batch, as tonight it’s to be part of their Jesa ceremony — an annual ritual commemorating the spirits of dead ancestors.

For us dazzled foreigners, it’s easy to forget that South Korea — land of superfast internet, glossy K-Pop, state-of-the-art foldable phones and “Squid Game” — is not in every respect the utopia of hypermodernity its recent global cultural boom might lead one to suspect. The nation actually lags some way behind other developed democracies in terms of LGBTQ rights, a fact that drives Lee Mirang’s supple, sincere feature debut, “Concerning My Daughter,” which locates its conflict in the fraught relationship between a gay woman and her uncomprehending parent, but finds its heart in a subtle, radiant performance by Oh Minae as the anguished mother.
Oh’s unnamed character is a widow in her fifties (which puts her quite a bit younger than her counterpart in Kim Hye-jin’s source novel) who initially seems to be living a solitary existence, stumbling under the weight of a massive watermelon, up the hill to her empty home.

Issues of cultural diversity, different Asian diaspora populations and the quest for the Asian cinematic identity came up for discussion on Thursday as the New Currents competition jury at the Busan International Film Festival prepared to get down to work.
Filmmaker and academic Jung Sung-il, who is set as the jury president, appeared to invite a degree of dispute that might get the blood racing. “I have high hopes, hope for controversies and good conversations among the jurors,” he said in opening remarks. Later he added that he’d be open to championing a “glorious failure” as prize-winner if it contained a truly original scene or section over a slicker, but less innovative title.
Other jurors are: Han Junhee, Korean director of “Coin Locker Girl” and “Dp”; Eva Cahen, head of the Semaine de la Critique section at Cannes; Indonesian director Edwin (“Blind Pig Wants to Fly”); and Korean American...

Speaking at the Busan New Currents jury press conference, Oh said she feels that opportunities are growing for filmmakers from Korea and other diaspora communities to make films in North America.

Myeong-Gil is not a very unique k-drama villain; in fact, he’s got a laundry list of trait that makes him fit very well with a dozen others in the specific genre that Bloodhounds fits in. Still, there’s something interesting about him because we don’t learn much about his past in the series, which solely focuses on the good guys. Unlike a lot of such characters, Myeong-Gil doesn’t have much integrity and is happy to stab someone in the back when they’re looking away. Myeong-Gil’s arc just goes from bad to worse and keeps worsening until there’s nowhere for him to go to save himself. Greed is a powerful emotion that is irrational and can take over a person’s mind and body entirely, and Myeong-Gil is the purest example of this. Myeong-Gil is great with his words and has a sharp tongue that...

Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan was honored with the Gold House Leading Man award at the second annual Gold House Gold Gala on Saturday in Los Angeles.
“When I think of a leading man, I think of someone who is six feet tall with big muscles, good-looking, and a ladies’ man,” the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star said before cracking, “That practically screams me, right?”
While the gala honored the most impactful Asians on the company’s A100 list, which recognizes the 100 Aapi individuals who impacted American culture and society in the last year, the night remained focused on celebrating Asian visibility and achievements. There was little talk of the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike currently impacting the industry.
As Quan’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once” co-star Stephanie Hsu celebrated her upcoming film “Joy Ride,” she shouted “WGA Strong” when thanking director Adele Lim, writer Teresa Hsiao and Cherry Chevapravatdumrong.
