George Clooney as a fixer? "Wolfs" is not, in fact, the sequel to the former Batman's excellent 2007 legal thriller "Michael Clayton." It does, however, reunite Clooney with his "Ocean's" trilogy costar Brad Pitt for the kind of original adult genre film that's in short supply these days. And no, before you ask, that's not a spelling mistake. We're talking about "Wolfs," not the 2014 werewolf flick "Wolves" ... or the 2016 sports drama "Wolves" ... or even 2022's murder mystery "Wolves." Man, who knew "Wolves" was such a versatile title?
"Wolfs" sees Clooney and Pitt playing a pair of fixers who're assigned to the same job in what will surely be a cage-match to rival that of "Godzilla vs. Kong" or Alien vs. Predator." Or maybe not; the trailer teaser and unofficial set photos released ahead of today's trailer premiere have much more of a "Locke" vibe, with Clooney and Pitt sitting in stony...

Creator Tony Gilroy provides an update on Andor season 2, and adds that it’s the biggest thing he’s ever worked on.
Two years after the terrific first season of Andor – a prequel series to 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – the second and final season is set to stream on Disney+ later in 2024.
Filming on the show concluded in February, and since then, creator Tony Gilroy (who also writes and produces) has likely been busy with editing and other post production bits and pieces. Gilroy – who also worked on Rogue One following a fraught production – has managed to take a bit of time out from his work on the show to make an appearance at the Writers Guild of America East.
While there, he gave an update on where he’s up to with Andor and, as first reported by Games Radar, said that he and his collaborators are indeed ‘finishing’ season two.

The third installment of the Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews has set its slate, and that will include director Steven Soderbergh engaging in a conversation with directors Anthony and Joe Russo. I will moderate that discussion, which will touch on the preposterously unlikely way that Soderbergh discovered and godfathered the career of the duo that directed Hollywood’s all-time highest grossing film, Avengers: Endgame. The festival runs next month from April 19-21.
Soderbergh’s own career took off with sex, lies, and videotape, the film that just celebrated 35 years since the filmmaker turned Sundance into a lucrative independent film hatchery. It went on to win the Palme d’Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, followed by Soderbergh’s first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He has gone on to direct films as diverse as Traffic, for which he received the 2000 Academy Award for Directing—the...

Since the inception of the Academy Awards, the U.S.-based organization behind them has always strived to honor worldwide film achievements. Their extensive roster of competitive acting winners alone consists of artists from 30 unique countries, three of which first gained representation during the 2020s. The last full decade’s worth of triumphant performers hail from eight countries, while 42.1% of the individual actors nominated during that time originate from outside of America.
The academy’s history of recognizing acting talent on a global scale dates all the way back to the inaugural Oscars ceremony in 1929, when Swiss-born Emil Jannings (who was of German and American parentage) won Best Actor for his work in both “The Last Command” and “The Way of All Flesh.” Over the next three years, the Best Actress prize was exclusively awarded to Canadians: Mary Pickford (“Coquette”), Norma Shearer (“The Divorcee”), and Marie Dressler (“Min and Bill...

With “The Devil Wears Prada” (2007), “The Girl on the Train” (2017) and now “Oppenheimer,” Emily Blunt has reaped three BAFTA bids for individual performances. She also contended for Rising Star in 2007. But she has gone home empty-handed. That could change this year.
Her two prior bids were for films that didn’t make the cut for Best Picture. Conversely, “Oppenheimer” is widely expected to win that award. That could give the edge to Blunt in the highly competitive Supporting Actress race as it did for Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech”), Judi Dench (“Shakespeare in Love”) and Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”).
Praise for Blunt’s performance and career as a whole would fit the bill of the likes of Miriam Margolyes (“The Age of Innocence”), Sigourney Weaver (“The Ice Storm”) and Tilda Swinton (“Michael Clayton”). They had delivered many lauded performances, but had never been rewarded.

In 2020 – for the first time in seven years – the Best Supporting Actress Oscar category saw a lone nomination, meaning that a film was recognized there and nowhere else. This achievement is attributed to Kathy Bates (“Richard Jewell”), who competed for no major precursors except the Golden Globe but still managed to bump Critics Choice, SAG, and Globe nominee Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”). Perhaps unsurprisingly given the length of the streak she broke, there has yet to be a lone contender in any of her category’s subsequent lineups.
Since the introduction of the two gendered supporting Oscars in 1937, there have been 57 female lone nominees and 54 male ones, with over half of the entrants on the former roster having been added before 1977. The one who directly preceded Bates was Helen Hunt, whose inclusion in her lineup was much more heavily predicted. Coincidentally, both women had the perceived advantage of being former Best Actress champions,...

George Clooney is opening up about why he has “more fun” directing than he does acting.
The Oscar winner recently spoke with Sky News about his latest directorial project, the film The Boys in the Boat.
During the interview, Clooney admitted that when it comes to directing compared to acting, “It’s more fun, you have a lot more control. I get to boss them around and I don’t have to learn how to row,” he quipped.
The Gravity actor added, “It’s fun to come in in the morning and it’s fun to write a screenplay and then have somebody build a set that you wrote, it really is.”
While Clooney has starred in dozens of projects, including Ticket to Paradise, Up in the Air, Michael Clayton, Ocean’s Eleven and ER, he has also directed a handful of films throughout his career such as The Tender Bar,...

“The Girl on the Train,” “A Quiet Place,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Sicario,” “Looper,” “The Young Victoria.” Those are just a select few of the many acclaimed performances delivered by Emily Blunt in her first two decades as a star. She has been nominated for seven Golden Globes, seven Critics’ Choice Awards, four SAG Awards and three BAFTAs. She’s won at the Globes (“Gideon’s Daughter”), Critics’ Choice (“Edge of Tomorrow”) and SAG (“A Quiet Place.”) So how has this widely beloved actress not had her time in the sun with the academy?
She has never been part of a Best Picture nominee. None of those aforementioned films of hers made the cut with the academy in the top category. This will undoubtedly change with “Oppenheimer.” Indeed this 3-hour pressure-cooker of an epic is widely predicted to win the top prize.

Tom Wilkinson, a character actor who was also adept when called upon to play leading parts, has died. The charismatic performer, able to embody both warm, relatable heroes and cunning villains, was 75.
Born in Leeds before moving to Canada and then Cornwall in childhood, Wilkinson knew he was destined to work in entertainment at the age of 18 when he was asked to direct a play.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) before forging a career in theatre, film and TV. In 1986, he got his first major screen role in mini-series First Among Equals, based on politician-turned-author Jeffrey Archer’s best-selling novel.
That kicked off a successful career on screens big and small, with his film resume including the likes of Shakespeare In Love, Batman Begins, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Girl With A Pearl Earring, The Patriot, Selma, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind,...

From The Full Monty to In the Bedroom, Michael Clayton to Eternal Sunshine, the actor – who has died aged 75 – was an intelligent and unshowy delight
For British movie audiences of a certain generation, there is one image of Tom Wilkinson that will always sum up his hold on our hearts: a paunchy, respectable bloke in a dole queue, wearing an anorak over his collar and tie, with a bunch of other depressed but much younger and scruffier males, shyly, almost unconsciously, practising some swaying erotic dance moves to the accompaniment of Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff.
He played the upright, uptight Gerald in the 1997 British comedy The Full Monty, an ex-supervisor at a Sheffield steel mill who got laid off like the blue-collar workers under him but, unlike them, he initially tries concealing his humiliating unemployment from his wife. But Gerald swallows his pride and joins the bizarre male striptease...

British actor Tom Wilkinson has died at the age of 75. According to a statement shared with the BBC, Wilkinson passed "suddenly" at his home with his wife and family in his company. The Wilkinson family asks for privacy as they mourn.
The son of a farmer, Wilkinson approached acting like a pure professional; he was committed but unsentimental, never sparing unneeded effort. He spent his early acting days in the 1980s content with roles on TV, but he shifted his focus to films in the 1990s because, as he bluntly admitted, that's where the money was. He recounted to the Guardian in 2008: "I was broke, and in a position I'd never been in before -- phoning people up to ask: 'Have you got anything for me, anything?' I knew lots of actors who were making movies, and I thought: 'I'll have a piece of that, please.'"

The twice Oscar-nominated co-star of Michael Clayton, Batman Begins, In the Bedroom, and many more films last appeared in Disney Plus’s sequel series to his breakout role in The Full Monty.
Between 1998 and 2018, Wilkinson was one of his generation’s most prolific character actors, with his output putting him up there with Brian Cox and Brendan Gleeson. He made over 65 movies and TV series in that twenty-year period, starring in everything from high-profile arthouse fare like Todd Field’s In the Bedroom to his role as Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins. He often played villains, such as in The Lone Ranger, but had the range to take on pretty much any part.

The Killer is a movie directed by David Fincher starring Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton.
The Killer is a film that bears the mark and legacy of its director, David Fincher, in every frame. Renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, Fincher’s reputation is fully justified in this gripping murder mystery.
Even in a movie centered around a character known for his flawlessness, The Killer manages to be impeccable. However, this time the protagonist fails to carry out his job flawlessly.
The Killer Film Review
The Killer serves as a blueprint for crafting a technically perfect thriller. Fincher’s obsession with perfection shines through, elevating the storytelling beyond the surface level. This cinematic exercise pushes the boundaries of Fincher’s own mastery, confirming that he is indeed a maestro.

The SAG-AFTRA strike is over, and it only took four minutes and 46 seconds after the news broke to receive an interview pitch for an actor from a publicist.
That’s because strategists and publicists for the top movies from studios and streamers have been sitting on their hands, waiting for their actors to promote their films that are in the conversation for Oscar attention. The news of SAG-AFTRA making a deal rippled throughout the ecosystem of consultants hired to bring their clients and stars awards recognition.
Some independent productions and companies such as A24 and Neon were able to make do thanks to interim agreements for movies like Celine Song’s “Past Lives” and Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall.” However, the floodgates have now opened, and big-spending streamers like Apple and Netflix, alongside legacy studios like Universal Pictures and Warner Bros., will be trotting out their contending stars to face industry voters,...

Actor Denzel Washington, considered a leading man, normally doesn’t have to audition for film projects. And it’s a privilege the actor appreciates, seeing as he really doesn’t like fighting other stars for movies.

Washington, like most A-list stars, has built up enough good will that he no longer has to audition for film roles. According to the actor’s own memory, he hasn’t auditioned since the 80s.

The official trailer for Netflix’s The Killer begins with a man (played by Michael Fassbender) explaining that he listens to music to keep his mind from wandering, allowing him to remain focused on the job. The job that requires such intense concentration? Hired assassin.
“After a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal,” reads Netflix’s synopsis.
In addition to two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender, the R-rated thriller stars Charles Parnell (Barry), Arliss Howard (Manhunt), Sophie Charlotte (Todas as Flores), and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton). The film’s based on writer Alexis Nolent (aka Matz) and illustrator Luc Jacamon’s graphic novel series, and was adapted by Andrew Kevin Walker.
Three-time Oscar nominee David Fincher directed and Ceán Chaffin served as producer.

As my friend Bob George used to say, “You’re getting close.” He’d say it about my personal life and he’d say it on set. He always knew what the missing pieces were and wasn’t afraid to tell me.
I met Bob, who died last week at 51 in a tragic bike accident in Silver Lake, through a friend. It was immediately apparent that we were exact opposites. I felt instantly balanced, just being in the room with him. He was an effortless, kind and gentle soul. An affable, hilarious guy who loved to laugh. I called him the very next day to go for drinks, and it was clear to us both that we liked each other to the point that we wanted to keep each other forever.
He was still a production accountant in 2013 when he expressed an interest in producing, and I thought to myself...

The backstage mishegoss that happened before the release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is the stuff of legend. The film underwent numerous reshoots before its 2016 release – so much so that close readings of the “Rogue One” trailers revealed numerous scenes not present in the final film. Widely reported as unmoved by the direction filmmaker Gareth Edwards had taken the “Star Wars” prequel film, Lucasfilm executives brought aboard “Michael Clayton” screenwriter Tony Gilroy to work on new material for “Rogue One” before its release. Gilroy eventually received a screenwriting credit for his contributions.
In interviews, Gilroy later said that “Rogue One” was “just in so much terrible, terrible trouble that all you can do is improve their position.” This year, while promoting the Disney+ show “Andor,” itself a prequel to “Rogue One,” Gilroy said, the film that ended up in theaters was the best possible version of the project.

Since making his feature debut with the low-budget sci-fi/horror flick "Monsters" in 2010, Gareth Edwards has been one of the most intriguing directors working in the Hollywood studio system. His first big-budget effort was the visually dazzling 2014 remake of "Godzilla," which he followed up with the superb "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." The latter experience wasn't the smoothest for Edwards, given that "Michael Clayton" filmmaker Tony Gilroy was brought on for extensive reshoots (which led to Gilroy taking on the critically acclaimed "Andor" series for Disney+), but the promise of "Monsters" and "Godzilla" has always been there for Edwards.
It sounds like he's made good on that promise and then some with "The Creator." The futuristic film stars John David Washington as an ex-special ops soldier who's been charged with saving humanity in its global war against artificial intelligence. Early buzz is extremely positive, and, judging from the trailers,...

Sydney Pollack was the Oscar winning filmmaker who could’ve branded himself as Hollywood’s favorite journeyman, crafting solid entertainments for over 40 years. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at all 20 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934, Pollack got his start as an actor, studying under legendary New York teacher Sanford Meisner. He cut his teeth is television, appearing in such shows as “The Twilight Zone,” “Playhouse 90” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” before transitioning into directing for the small screen. Even after making a name for himself behind the camera, he kept popping up onscreen, starring in “The Player” (1992), “Husbands and Wives” (1992), “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999), “Changing Lanes” (2002), “Michael Clayton” (2007) and his own “Tootsie” (1982), to name but a few.
It was this experience as a performer that made him a favorite with actors, including Robert Redford, with whom he made seven films.

Just as he redefined the legal drama with the Oscar-winning movie Michael Clayton, Tony Gilroy has made arguably the most serious Star Wars streaming series to date in Disney+/Lucasfilm’s Andor, which is steeped in the binary of a burgeoning morose utilitarian empire that’s dominating the denizens of the universe.
Set before the events of the 2016 prequel, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which focused on the band of misfit spies who team up to steal the Death Star plans (which are in turn used by the Rebellion to take out the massive space station in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope), Andor follows Rogue One’s Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) — known for being a thief, a liar and a cheat — as he becomes a lynchpin in the Rebellion’s rise against the Empire. Gilroy wound up writing on Rogue One and handled additional shoots and edits on that Gareth Edwards-directed movie.

Holding an extended closing shot on a character’s face has often been an effective way to illuminate whatever thoughts and feelings are running through their head, to keep them resonating through the end credits and even beyond. The device worked exceptionally well in Call Me by Your Name, Benediction and Michael Clayton.
Wim Wenders ends his eloquent and emotionally rich Japanese drama, Perfect Days, with such a shot, held tight on the extraordinarily expressive face of Koji Yakusho as his character drives through Tokyo reflecting on the rewards and perhaps also the regrets of his life with the same spirit of openness and acceptance, embracing the sadness as much as the joy.
The song that this resolutely analog man is listening to on his car cassette player is a Nina Simone standard that has become one of the most overused tracks in contemporary movies. But it fits the scene...

Denzel Washington’s Hollywood career is marked by many successes, but he also has some regrets. One of his biggest was declining a role that ultimately turned Brad Pitt into a star.
It’s a common occurrence in the entertainment industry, where actors often make difficult choices about which projects to take. In this case, however, Washington’s decision had a lasting impact on Pitt’s career, and the role became one of the most iconic in Hollywood history.

Despite boasting one of the best careers in the movie industry, Washington has had two major regrets. His first is turning down the lead role in the 1995 movie, Seven. The other was walking away from the 2007 thriller Michael Clayton.
In regards to the latter, Washington was offered the role that eventually got handed to George Clooney.

Are you ready to go for the Full Monty once again?
It's been 25 years since the cult classic had this group of out-of-work steel workers taking it all off in Sheffield, England.
Will they do it again?
You'll have to watch the trailer below to find out.
The new eight-part series follows the same band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society's crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors.
The comedy-drama will uncover what happened to the gang after they put their kit back on, exploring their brighter, sillier, and some of their more desperate moments.
But the series will also highlight how the fiercely funny world of these working-class heroes – still residing in Sheffield – has changed in the intervening decades.
Fans of the movie won't be disappointed as many of the original cast members are returning, including Robert Carlyle as "Gaz," Mark Addy as "Dave,...

‘Andor’ Showrunner Says He’s Ceased All Non-Writing Work on Show, Denies He Violated Writers’ Strike
Following an accusation that he violated the writers’ strike by continuing to work on “Andor,” showrunner Tony Gilroy said Tuesday that he has actually ceased all non-writing work on the Disney+ “Star Wars” series.

After being briefed on the Saturday showrunner meeting, I informed Chris Keyser at the WGA on Sunday morning that I would also be ceasing all non-writing producing functions,” Gilroysaid in a statement provided to TheWrap.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the statement.
Gilroy’s comments come after criticism from writer Abdullah Saeed, who on Monday accused the “Michael Clayton” screenwriter of scabbing — failing to honor a strike — because he continued to work on “Andor” last week as showrunner after the writers’ strike began.
In this, however, Gilroy was hardly alone. During the strike’s first week, numerous TV showrunners were caught in a...

“It was a gift of a role, to be honest,” reveals Andy Serkis about portraying the charismatic inmate-turned-revolutionary Kino Loy in “Andor.” For our recent webchat he adds that, “the series as a whole, I adored, but then I adored “Rogue One.” When you’re working with someone like Tony Gilroy,” he says, “he is a man who has a lot to say about the world that we live in,” adding, “Tony is one of those writers who just hits the bullseye with character. He just knows the turns and the levels and the layers.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Over the past half decade, film academy members have demonstrated a clear preference for lengthy featured male performances while generally being drawn to comparatively shorter female ones. However, after four consecutive instances of Best Supporting Actor Oscar winners outpacing their corresponding female victors by margins of at least 20 minutes, last year’s duo were only separated by six minutes and 40 seconds. The supporting actress who pulled off a win with more screen time than her four closest predecessors was Ariana DeBose, whose performance in “West Side Story” lasts for 28 minutes and 54 seconds.
Since DeBose’s screen time total in “West Side Story” is 49 seconds higher than the all-time Best Supporting Actress winner average, her performance is naturally counted within the longer half of those that have merited the honor. Included among the women on the opposite side of the line is Rita Moreno, who received this award in 1962 for playing...

The Disney era of "Star Wars" has been going strong for nearly a decade now since the purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012, though it began in earnest with the release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in December 2015. While it has been a bit of a mixed bag (for various reasons) a great many fans would agree that 2016's "Rogue One" remains a high point, if not the single high point, of this era. One man largely responsible for that is Tony Gilroy, who was brought on board to oversee extensive rewrites and...

When Disney released the first teaser for the “Star Wars” Disney+ series “Andor” back in May, the streaming platform promised a release date of August 31 with the first two episodes. But with Marvel’s Disney+ show “She-Hulk” (August 17), HBO’s “House of the Dragon” (August 21), and Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” (September 2) all vying for eyeballs during the waning days of summer, Disney+ has changed course for “Andor.” The highly anticipated series from Oscar nominee Tony Gilroy (“Michael Clayton”) will now debut on September 21 with three episodes instead of two.
Set before the events of “Rogue One,” “Andor” focuses on Diego Luna’s titular rebel fighter and his origin story as a resistance leader.
According to Disney, “The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger,...
