TV icon Norman Lear had not had a TV series on the air for two decades until a reimagening of his beloved One Day At a Time premiered on Netflix in January 2017. It was developed by Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce who served as showrunners and executive produced it with Lear. The new One Day At a Time earned critical acclaim and launched a prolific final act in Lear’s career, which has included the Emmy-winning Live In Front of a Studio Audience, the upcoming series Good Times and The Corps on Netflix, Clean Slate at Amazon Freevee as well as a slew of other projects in development.
Following Lear’s death Tuesday at the age of 101, Kellett and Royce wrote a moving tribute, reminiscing of the time they worked with the TV legend by focusing on one fateful run-through during Season 1 of One Day at a Time. It...

"Love in Gravity," a scripted podcast presented by ViiV Healthcare, is a necessary listen. The pod aims to normalize HIV prevention in gay, bi, and trans Latine communities through stories of love, loss, and self-discovery. According to the National Institutes of Health, Latines get new HIV diagnoses three times more often than white, non-Hispanic people - further proof that content like "Love in Gravity" is needed.
The first season opens with a trio of men telling the story of Andrés Soto, voiced by Harvey Guillén, and his journey to discover what love, marriage, and family mean and look like for him. From there, each episode of the first season focuses on a different set of characters and their trials and tribulations.
There's high schooler Julian Navarette, who's trying to figure out if he should come out to his grandfather; there's journalist Michael Pizarro, who goes back to Costa Rica to...

Sony TV was not able to save “One Day at a Time” for a second time.
“It’s officially over. There will be no new @OneDayAtATime episodes,” co-creator Gloria Calderon Kellett said Tuesday on Twitter. “But there will always be 46 episodes that we got to make that live Forever. Thank you to this beautiful cast. Our dedicated crew. And to you, our loyal fans. We loved making this for you. Thank you for watching.”
Pop TV picked up the reboot of Normal Lear’s classic sitcom last year, after it was initially canceled by Netflix after three seasons.
Co-showrunner Mike Royce added on his Twitter account: “The only silver lining about not doing a show anymore is that nobody can take away the show you already did. Four seasons that will forever exist for people to watch.”
Netflix axed “One Day at a Time” in 2019, citing low viewership numbers for the critically acclaimed sitcom.

As it did after One Day At a Time‘s first cancellation almost two years ago, series producer Sony Pictures TV tried hard to find a new home for the praised reimagining of Norman Lear’s beloved 1970s sitcom. The effort — considered a long shot — was not successful, and the cast and crew were informed today that the show has come to an end. One Day at a Time co-creators/exec producers/showrunners Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce shared the news with the show’s fans on Twitter.

There will be no second great escape for “One Day at a Time.”
After the series was canceled for a second time two weeks ago, co-creators Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce have confirmed that it will not be revived.
Series producer Sony Pictures Television planned to shop the series to other outlets yet again following the Pop TV dumping, according to sources, but was clearly unable to find a suitable or willing buyer.

Exclusive: CBS has put in development a medical drama from writers Brittany Northcross and Sallie Patrick (Dynasty) and her Rabbit Ears production company, producer DeVon Franklin (Breakthrough) and his Franklin Entertainment and CBS Studios, where Franklin and Patrick are under overall deals.
Written and executive produced by Northcross and Patrick, in the Untitled Texas Medical Project, on the heels of a family rift, a renowned San Francisco pathologist more invested in research than patient interaction relocates to a rural Texas town in the middle of a vast medical desert to become the area’s only doctor.
Franklin executive produces via his Franklin Entertainment with James Mackay for Rabbit Ears. CBS Studios is the studio.
Northcross, who’s featured on The Plug’s Black Female Staff Writers Database, recently worked for showrunner Amy Lippman at Pamplona Productions. Prior to that, she spent two years working for Endeavor Content under Graham Taylor.

One Day at a Time just can't seem to catch a break. Pop has cancelled the comedy TV show after a shortened fourth season but there's a chance there could still be a fifth season.
A reboot of the 1970s CBS series from Norman Lear, Whitney Blake, and Allan Manings, the reboot comes from Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce. It centers on Cuban-American Penelope Riera Alverez (Justina Machado). This US Army veteran and divorced mother is just trying to balance work and her social life while raising her kids, Elena (Isabella Gomez) and Alex (Marcel Ruiz). Thankfully, she has the support of her Cuban mother, Lydia Riera (Rita Moreno), her boss, Dr. Leslie Berkowitz (Stephen Tobolowsky), and landlord Pat Schneider (Todd Grinnell).

Sorry, One Day at a Time fans: the beloved series has been canceled by Pop, Deadline reported on Nov. 24. The reimagining of Norman Lear's 1970s sitcom had originally been picked up from Netflix after the streaming giant canceled it after three seasons in 2019. Pop aired its fourth season earlier this year but has decided not to order any more episodes. Series producer Sony Pictures Television will once again shop the series to other outlets.
One Day at a Time stars Justina Machado as Penelope, a divorced matriarch of a Cuban-American family living in the same house with her activist daughter, Elena (Isabella Gomez); her teen son, Alex (Marcel Ruiz); and her traditional mother, Lydia (Rita Moreno). Speaking to Deadline in October, producer Gloria Calderon Kellett teased plans for a potential fifth season, saying, "We have so much more to tell, and especially with everything that's going on in this world,...

It's the end of the line for One Day at a Time.
The series has been canceled for a second time.
The series started its life as a Netflix original, airing for three seasons before being canceled.
Pop TV later stepped into the ring and picked up a fourth season.
The series aired seven episodes of the planned 13-episode season, but production was halted early due to the pandemic.
As things stand, the series finale is the election-themed seventh episode of the fourth season.
ViacomCBS, which owns Pop TV was interested in the series from the get-go, and recently aired the fourth season on CBS.
The series did not gain much traction on the cabler or on CBS, leading to questions about the future.
Hours before its broadcast finale last month, co-showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett signaled that the series was over.

“One Day at a Time” is one and done on Pop TV. The ViacomCBS cable network does plan on ordering any additional episodes of the comedy after just one season, an individual familiar with the network’s plans told TheWrap.
Pop TV picked up the reboot of Normal Lear’s classic sitcom after it was initially canceled by Netflix after three seasons. Pop TV premiered its one and only season in March, which had to be cut short due to the pandemic shutting down production this spring (though they did scrape together a special animated episode). CBS aired the fourth season of the show this fall in primetime as a schedule filler while it waited for its normal primetime lineup to get the cameras rolling again.
A separate individual familiar with the situation told TheWrap that the show’s producers Sony TV are trying to find another new home for “One Day at a Time.

Almost two years after Netflix canceled One Day at a Time after three seasons, the praised reimagining of Norman Lear’s beloved 1970s sitcom is losing its network home again. And, just like it did in the spring of 2018, the studio behind the reboot, Sony Pictures TV, plans to shop the series to other outlets.
Pop, which aired One Day at a Time’s abbreviated fourth season earlier this year, has opted not to order more episodes. The ViacomCBS ad-supported cable network in 2019 rescued the series after its cancellation by Netflix in a complex deal that included encore airings on sibling CBS. A lot of things have changed since then. Following the merger of CBS and Viacom, Pop moved from the CBS to the Viacom side of the company, joining Chris McCarthy’s Entertainment & Youth division. Pop has since pulled away from original scripted programming; following the end of Schitt’s Creek,...

“One Day at a Time” has been canceled at Pop.
This now marks the second cancelation for the reboot of the classic 1975 Norman Lear sitcom of the same name. “One Day at a Time” was originally canceled at Netflix in early 2019 after three seasons. Pop rescued the show a few months later and began airing Season 4 earlier this year.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, series producer Sony Pictures Television will shop the series to other outlets yet again.
The move to end the series is not altogether surprising given the post-merger landscape that has taken shape at ViacomCBS, which owns Pop. Variety exclusively reported in March that Pop was all but shutting down its scripted series plans, with “One Day at a Time” and the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” being the two remaining scripted shows at the cabler.

Pop TV had a huge Emmys breakthrough thanks to “Schitt’s Creek,” which is nominated 15 times this year including Best Comedy Series. So it was ironic on Wednesday night, September 16, when Cheryl Campsmith (“One Day at a Time”) claimed Best Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series at the Creative Arts Awards; since “Schitt” hasn’t won any of its nominations yet, that makes “One Day” the first Pop TV series to win an Emmy.

Former State Representative and founder of Fair Fight Stacy Abrams was the perfect moderator for the One Day At A Time panel. For one, she is an activist and advocate for many issues that the reimagining of the classic Norman Lear sitcom embrace, but also because she is a true fan of the show. At the beginning of the virtual panel, Abrams just wanted Rita Moreno to say her name so that she could tell her family it happened.
“Stacey Abrams! Stacey Abrams! Stacey Abrams!” Moreno playfully sang.
“Ok, that was awesome…I’m leaving now,” Abrams gushed as the rest of the cast and creators on the panel laughed.
Abrams and Moreno were joined on the PaleyFest panel by Executive Producers Mike Royce, Brent Miller & Gloria Calderon Kellett as well as stars Justina Machado, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, Todd Grinnell, Stephen Tobolowsky, India de Beaufort, Sheridan Pierce, Ed Quinn and Raquel Justice.

“One Day at a Time” lived for another day. It aired its fourth season on the Pop TV network this spring after it had been cancelled by Netflix. Will its move finally produce Emmy nominations in top categories? It now shares a network with “Schitt’s Creek,” which earned a Best Comedy Series bid in 2019 and could win in 2020. Could success for that show carry over into overdue kudos for “One Day”? Scroll down to see 20 Emmy entries for the resurrected show across 16 categories.
“One Day” is a re-imagining of the classic CBS sitcom that ran from 1975 to 1984. This version stars Justina Machado as war veteran and single mother Penelope, who raises two teenage children (Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz) while living with her own mother (Rita Moreno). At just 16-years-old, Marcel Ruiz is already living what most people would consider ‘the dream’. In 2017, he made his professional acting debut. Just a few months later he had already earned a starring role on the series One Day at a Time. That same year, he won an Imagen Award for Best Young Actor. Variety Magazine dubbed him one of the 10 Latinxs to Watch in 2019. Ruiz’ character on the show, Alex Alvarez, is a confident teen who in many ways contrasts his sister’s (Elena) character. Penelope Alvarez on “One Day at a Time” is what you’d get if you tossed series co-creator and showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett and portrayer Justina Machado in a blender, with some dashes of co-creator Mike Royce and the other writers mixed in. At least, that’s how Calderón Kellett herself puts it.
“I feel like I have a responsibility to shed a light on what it is like to be a Latina woman living in this moment in time in America,” she says. “Whenever we talk about storylines, specifically with Penelope, it always goes through the filter of, ‘What would I do?’ Penelope and I parent the same way; we communicate with our mothers the same way; we both have diarrhea of the mouth [and] over-communicate. I always say, ‘Look at me’ when I talk to my kids, and Penelope says that, too. The other day my son said,...

Get ready for a musical battle of the “One Day at a Time” divas!
Gloria Estefan and Rita Moreno will be performing a parody of Estefan’s “Mi Tierra” in the upcoming animated episode, Variety has learned exclusively.
“We diss each other, and we’re doing it to the tune of her beautiful, wonderful, saucy” song, Moreno told Variety about the performance. “It’s wonderful because she’s letting us borrow this song, and we’re parodying it. It’s very short but it’s very funny. We’re very nasty with each other — as you know, our characters despise each other. She had a great time writing it, and I had a super time singing it.”

You can't keep One Day at a Time down.
The Netflix-turned-Pop comedy is set to produce an animated installment, that will air later in the spring.
What's more, the entire cast of the series is set to take part in the milestone episode.
"In my 97 years, I've never known of a multicam comedy to animate a single episode as a special. Even this I get to experience," said exec producer Norman Lear.
The news comes on the same day One Day at a Time Season 4 Episode 6 airs -- the show's last live-action episode completed before the coronavirus pandemic shut the show down.
It's unclear when the show will resume production, but it will likely be without its standard studio audience.
The last two produced filmed without a studio audience.

Pop TV’s One Day At a Time is getting animated. The reimagening of Norman Lear’s classic will produce an animated special to air this spring.
Like all other live-action Hollywood production, filming on the current fourth season of One Day At a Time was suspended in mid-March amid a growing coronavirus pandemic. Shortly after that, One Day At a Time executive producer/co-showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett, whose husband is a cartoonist, brought the idea of an animated episode with fellow executive producer/co-showrunner Mike Royce. The two took it to Odaat producing studio Sony Pictures TV, which helped get the ball rolling.
As Deadline has reported, animation has been the one area of TV series production that has continued with little interruption during the health crisis since it can be done remotely. This is also how the One Day At a Time special will be made.

Shortly before the coronavirus pandemic forced TV and film productions to shut down en masse, studio audiences were still lining up to watch live tapings on backlots across Los Angeles. “One Day at a Time,” the former Netflix original that now resides on Pop TV was no different.
Variety visited the Alvarez home on the Sony lot in February to interview members of the cast about their big cable debut and what it’s like to be one of the few Latinx families on television. Here are five things Variety learned while on set.
How the cast experiences Latinx culture through the show
The Alvarez family house feels familiar to many Latinx viewers: Rosaries and prayer candles fill the space, ropa vieja is in the pot, and rising rent prices are cause for worry. But quinceañeras and waving Cuban flags at little league games aren’t what resonates the most with the cast.

It’s been a long road for “One Day at a Time,” a remake of the Norman Lear sitcom from the 1970s focused on the Alvarez clan, a Cuban-American family living in Echo Park in Los Angeles. Despite three successful seasons that involved guest stars like Gloria Estefan and a rabid fanbase on social media, the series struggled to rise above the glut of Netflix programming, even having to self-finance their own Emmy campaign for leading lady Justina Machado as Penelope Alvarez.

“One Day at a Time” returned to the screen on Tuesday night and scored decent numbers across the trio of networks it now calls home.

The family sitcom that became the first Netflix-based television show to leave the streaming service and find a second life on a network starts its premiere on Pop TV with young Alex Alvarez (Marcel Ruiz) declaring, “It’s like there’s nothing good on Netflix anymore.” And for a series that has looked at tough issues like Ptsd and alcoholism, and even put on a self-financed campaign for Emmy consideration, this shot across the bow kickstarts a new world for the Alvarez family, one where there is a little more appreciation for those efforts.

“One Day at a Time” on Pop TV will be less one minute of its catchy theme song.
At the Television Critics Association press tour in January, series’ co-showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett told reporters that her cable version won’t have room for the one minute, two-second Gloria Estefan ditty from the Netflix seasons. Bummer.
The whole thing will just be a sing-songy version of the show title, Calderón Kellett said. That was not only news to us, it was news to star Rita Moreno.

“It’s a minute, it’s 50 seconds,” Calderón Kellett said of the beloved full version, “we don’t have it.”
“What?!?” Moreno asked her boss.
“Yeah, it’s gone. That’s Ok. It’s on YouTube,” Calderón Kellett said. “Gloria Estefan’s gonna be Ok.”

The big news comes almost a year after Netflix canceled the modern-day remake of the classic Norman Lear series. Thankfully, Pop TV swooped in to save the well-loved TV show for a 13-episode season.
