Exclusive: 20th Century Studios has acquired an original feature pitch from Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern (Booksmart), enlisting Gloria Sanchez to produce.
While plot specifics under wraps, the project is described as a mother-daughter comedy with two strong female roles.
On the film side, Haskins and Halpern most recently penned 80 for Brady, the comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, which Paramount released last year. They’re perhaps best known for scripting Booksmart, the BAFTA and WGA Award-nominated 2019 comedy directed by Olivia Wilde.
Creators of the CBS show Carol’s Second Act, starring Patricia Heaton, as well as the ABC sitcom Trophy Wife, the pair are currently under an overall deal in television at CBS Studios. Nominated for an Emmy for their work on staff of ABC’s Black-ish, they’ve also written on series like Good Girls (NBC), The Mayor (ABC) and Imaginary Mary (ABC), to name a few.

“Will & Harper,” a heartfelt and heartbreaking documentary about Will Ferrell’s cross-country road trip with his best friend Harper Steele, who recently came out as transgender, sold to Netflix after its Sundance Film Festival debut. Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed, but “Will & Harper” was drawing interest from several buyers.
The film, directed by “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” filmmaker Josh Greenbaum, was warmly embraced in Park City with two standing ovations after the credits rolled.
“We are thrilled about how audiences received the movie with open arms at Sundance,” the filmmakers said in a statement. “It’s a movie about the power of friendship and acceptance, that we hope can help shift the culture, and so we are excited to have a partner in Netflix that has the ability to reach the largest possible audience worldwide.”

Newcomer Samy Burch wasn’t exactly shooting for the stars when she started writing “May December” — which would go on to become a parley between Best Actress winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, directed by indie icon Todd Haynes — on spec. “I really wrote this in the coat closet of our apartment. If I had had the people that got these roles on the corkboard, I would’ve seemed grandiose,” said the screenwriter to IndieWire during a sit-down at the 2023 Middleburg Film Festival. “My goal with it was honestly to get representation. So everything that’s happened after that has been incredible.”
After making the outline with husband Alex Mechanik, Burch finished the script on Memorial Day 2019, the holiday that coincidentally kicks off the film, which follows an actress who embeds herself into the lives of a scandalized couple when she is cast in a film about them. And, yes,...

In April 2021, it was announced that Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, who co-wrote Bridesmaids and co-starred in Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, would be writing a Disney live-action musical comedy centering on evil stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella from Cinderella.
Two years later, Mumolo finally gave an update on the project at Monday night’s premiere of Joy Ride, in which she is also featured.
“Well, you know, sometimes you get fired,” Mumolo told The Hollywood Reporter, then clarifying that the two are “currently on hold” while another writer has been brought on to take a stab at the story. “Scripts go through a lot of writers so we would have been really lucky and rare to be the only writers on that one. So there’s now another writer,” she continued. “We definitely worked on it, we got pretty far into the process and then we have...

Netflix took out its big red checkbook at the Cannes Film Festival, and bested the competition during what Deadline has referred to as an “old-style, all-night auction.” The prize was “May December,” the new drama from director Todd Haynes.
The film stars Natalie Portman as an actress visiting a woman upon whose life her next character is based. That person is played by Julianne Moore who achieved some tabloid notoriety after going to prison for seducing a 13-year-old boy when she was a grown woman. Now it is 20 years later, and she and the boy (now played as a man by Charles Melton) are still together, raising a family in Maine. (Sounds like a prestige version of the Adam Sandler flick “That’s My Boy.”)
The project was received with great praise at Cannes (it currently boasts a 93 percent score on ye olde Tomatometer) with many critics highlighting its comedic side.

Exclusive: After an old-style all-night auction, Netflix is finalizing an $11 million deal for North American rights to May December, the Todd Haynes-directed drama that stars Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman. It is far and away the big deal of Cannes so far, and a deal of this size ought to send a jolt of optimism that the North American marketplace for Cannes films is still alive and well, after a slow start here.
The deal is being finalized by CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group, with Rocket Science brokering international deals. The film premiered at Cannes last Saturday evening, and received an eight-minute standing ovation and positive notices. It is most unusual for Netflix to take North American rights, so this is an exceptional situation.

Variety has a first look at the anticipated Cannes Film Festival competition premiere “May December,” led by Oscar-winning heavyweights Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and directed by Todd Haynes.
The title, which is also for sale out of this year’s Marché du Film, represents a “Far From Heaven” reunion for Moore and Haynes and a significant breakout opportunity for “Riverdale” heartthrob Charles Melton.

Exclusive: In what is shaping up to become one of the biggest TV comedy packages to hit the marketplace in awhile, Will Ferrell & Jessica Elbaum’s Gloria Sanchez Productions and Rian Johnson & Ram Bergman’s T-Street have teamed up to develop a comedy TV series as a starring vehicle for Ferrell, I have learned.
No one would comment but I hear the series revolves around a professional golfer who becomes the face of a controversial new league competing with the PGA.
While fictional, the story would inevitably draw parallels to the controversial Liv Golf startup. It also evokes one of Ferrell’s signature movies, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. The series is in a similar tone, I hear, bringing Ferrell back to the sports arena he also explored in Blades of Glory and Semi-Pro.

With its first season in 2019, Dead to Me introduced viewers to the recently widowed Laguna Beach real estate agent Jen (Christina Applegate) as well as Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini), a free spirit with a shocking secret who came to befriend her via a support group. By the end of the show’s first run (*Spoilers ahead*), we learned that it was Judy who killed Jen’s husband Ted in a hit-and-run, with Jen later killing Judy’s ex-fiancé, Steve (James Marsden). It seemed near the end of Season 2 that Jen and Judy’s concerns as to the consequences of their crimes might soon be put to rest, given Detective Perez’s (Diana-Maria Riva) decision to take pity on them.

Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds are ringing in the holidays with a new musical. Apple TV+ has released the first teaser for “Spirited,” an upcoming Christmas movie that sees the two comedic actors teaming up — and squaring off in a tap-dancing battle.
Based on Charles Dickens’ classic novella “A Christmas Carol,” “Spirited” focuses on the Ghost of Christmas Present, portrayed in the original story as a Father Christmas-esque figure. In the (mostly) streaming film, Ferrell plays the spirit, who spends every year selecting a new corrupted person to be visited by him and the ghosts of Christmases Past and Future. Netflix has renewed its popular dark comedy Dead To Me for a third season. Series creator Liz Feldman will return as executive producer/showrunner under a big overall deal she has signed with the streamer.
Under the multi-year pact, Feldman will also develop new original series and other projects for Netflix. Dead To Me stems from an overall deal Feldman previously had at CBS Television Studios, which produces the praised comedy and I hear bid to keep Feldman in the fold.
Dead to Me, starring Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini and James Marsden, has been a breakout commercial and critical hit. Its first season was watched by 30M households in its first month, ranked fourth on Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular Series of 2019 in the U.S. and scored Applegate an Emmy nomination.

Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell are reuniting to star in a series adaptation of the Wondery and Bloomberg Media podcast “The Shrink Next Door,” Variety has learned. The series is in development at Media Rights Capital (Mrc) Television with no network or streaming service currently attached.
Inspired by true events, “The Shrink Next Door” is described as a dark comedy following the bizarre relationship between psychiatrist to the stars Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (Rudd) and his longtime patient Martin “Marty” Markowitz (Ferrell). Over the course of their relationship, Ike slowly takes over Marty’s life, even moving into Marty’s home and taking over his family business.
Should the project move forward, it would mark Ferrell and Rudd’s first onscreen collaboration since “Anchorman 2” in 2013, which was of course a sequel to the seminal 2004 comedy “Anchorman.” Both men will also executive produce “The Shrink Next Door” in addition to starring.

Exclusive: After a heated bidding battle that drew bids from six studios, Universal Pictures has prevailed to acquire an untitled holiday comedy pitch based on an original idea by Olivia Wilde and Katie Silberman, the team behind the critically lauded Booksmart.
Wilde is attached to direct, and Silberman, who co-wrote Booksmart, will write the script. The two of them will produce.
It is refreshing to see this level of studio enthusiasm generated after an inspiring directorial debut by the multi-hyphenate Wilde came out of SXSW to become one of the most critically acclaimed films of the young year. Booksmart has been included on most of the “best of the year so far” film lists. Backed by Annapurna and Gloria Sanchez and released by United Artists, it has grossed over $22 million so far.
Universal’s Svp of Production Sara Scott and Director of Development Lexi Barta will oversee development.
