Serena Williams will be the host of the 2024 Espy Awards.
ESPN announced the pick of the tennis legend as this year’s Espys host during Disney’s upfront presentation to advertisers Tuesday, with American Idol host Ryan Seacrest breaking the news on stage. The event will be held July 11.
The Espy Awards are ESPN’s annual awards show celebrating the best of sports. Last year Patrick Mahomes and LeBron James were among the big winners, and for the first time the program went without a host (due in part to the ongoing Writers Guild strike).
Williams, of course, retired from professional tennis nearly two years ago.
That being said, she has kept busy, with media being one of her top priorities. Williams inked a two-book deal with Random House Publishing last year, beginning with an “intimate” memoir.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to Copa 71, a documentary about the pioneering “Unofficial Women’s World Cup” that created a sensation in 1971 but has since been virtually erased from history. Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine (Billie) directed the film, which is executive produced by tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams and soccer star Alex Morgan.
Greenwich plans a summer theatrical release of the documentary, a co-production of New Black Films, Dogwoof, and Westbrook Studios.
“In August 1971, soccer teams from England, Argentina, Mexico, France, Denmark, and Italy gathered at Mexico City’s sun-drenched Azteca Stadium,” notes a synopsis of the film. “The scale of the tournament was monumental: lavish sponsorship, extensive TV coverage, merchandise on every street corner, and crowds of over 100,000 roaring fans turn this historic stadium into a cauldron of noise match after match.”
The synopsis continues, “A fawning media treat the players like rock stars.

The project led off Disney’s upfront presentation to ad buyers in New York. Williams herself took the stage to unveil the series. She said he wanted to appear at the event because “you’re talking about building connections with fans and our family is super-obsessed with Disney.”
Gesturing toward her stomach, she added, “My big plan was to break my baby news at the Disney upfront, but the Met Gala got in the way of those plans.”
In the Arena: Serena Williams, she added, will be “an unflinching account of my life and my 23 Grand Slam victories — not counting doubles.”

Serena Williams has announced the launch of her own multimedia production company, called 926 Productions.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion announced that she was 'evolving away' from tennis last summer, with the hard-court swing in the US acting as her farewell tour.
Since then, there have been several rumours of a suspected comeback, but Williams was always keen to stress that her emotional farewell at the US Open last summer really was the end of her competitive tennis career.
One of the greatest tennis players of all time, Williams still has other skills and interests outside of the world she so completely dominated for nearly two decades.
With this latest venture, Williams is truly embracing her entrepreneurial spirit and marking the start of the next chapter in her life away from the tennis court.
With the launch of 926 Productions, we aim to elevate female and diverse voices through content that speaks to everyone.

Kevin Hart is taking the leap into dramatic series television with the Netflix limited series “True Story.” And if even a quarter of the series is, in fact, true then it looks to be a wild ride. The first trailer for the seven-episode limited series just dropped and things take a bad turn fast.
Based on the trailer, Hart is playing a character seemingly inspired by himself, an ultra-successful comedian named The Kid. Life appears to be good, but when Kid’s older brother (Wesley Snipes) shows back up in his life, it threatens to destroy not just the Kid’s career but could see more violent things unfold. Right now there’s little else to go off of, including what exactly is going to land the Kid in hot water, but there’s a serious desire to make this a heavy drama.
