Prime Video’s latest sensation, the Fallout TV show sparked a new interest to the iconic video game franchise in millions of people who haven’t even heard about it previously — and launched quite a few careers sky-high. One of the show’s lead stars, Ella Purnell (Lucy MacLean) found herself under the spotlight thanks to it…
Except that in 2014, the young actress was already working with Angelina Jolie.
Ella Purnell Starred in Maleficent
You read it right: the Fallout lead star did a movie with Angelina Jolie back in the day, and not just any movie. 2014’s Maleficent, one of Jolie’s last movies before she effectively quit acting, saw Ella Purnell play the same character as the former queen of Hollywood — Purnell starred in it as the younger version of Maleficent herself.

Damsel is the kind of Netflix movie that would feel right at home in the 2010s. It may be an original fairy tale of sorts, but it pulls from the same kind of girl power feminism that drove the “edgy” retellings of popular fairy tales like Snow White and the Huntsmen and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 10 years ago.
On the surface, Damsel might seem like a fresh and exciting take on a centuries old story. A young woman (Elodie) marries a prince to help her kingdom, but instead of living happily ever after, she gets sacrificed to a dragon and has to fight her way out of its lair. Despite the promise of that premise, the movie itself feels like such a shallow representation of what a story like this could be.

Angelina Jolie was perfectly cast as the deliciously evil Maleficent for Disney’s live action movie back in 2014, which put the focus entirely on the iconic Disney villain and managed to find a way to make her a sympathetic character. The film was a massive box office hit in 2014, making nearly $800 million worldwide and spawning a sequel just a handful of years later.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil continued the story of Jolie’s Maleficent in 2019, though that film ended its worldwide box office run with just under $500 million. The sequel’s production budget was nearly $200 million, so Disney no doubt expected the film to make more in theaters. Nevertheless, it looks like we’re still getting a Maleficent 3 at some point soon.
A new profile that The Wall Street Journal wrote up on Angelina Jolie this week confirms that Jolie is currently attached to star in a third movie in the Maleficent franchise.

Disneyland’s popular Fantasmic! show will return next spring after a one-year closure prompted by a fire that engulfed the show’s giant prop dragon.
“With the goal of delivering the best possible show for our guests, performances of Fantasmic! are currently paused until Spring 2024,” park officials announced this week.
The new show will no longer feature the dragon, but will instead add new special effects during the climactic battle between Sorcerer Mickey and Maleficent.
No one was injured when the dragon caught fire in April, but park officials temporarily suspended fire effects similar to those used at Fantasmic! at select shows worldwide.

For Tom Cruise, one of the most effective ways to sell tickets to blockbusters like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible” sequels has been recounting the horrors and headaches of performing his own death-defying stunts.
In the lead-up to “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” however, Cruise hasn’t been able to talk up the antics of hanging off a runaway train or jumping out of airplanes on late-night shows due to the ongoing writers strike. And now, as the actors join the picket lines against Hollywood film and TV companies, the realm of promotion for upcoming projects is getting a lot narrower.
According to SAG-AFTRA guidelines, stars aren’t allowed to appear on daytime shows like “Good Morning America” or “Today,” attend premieres, participate in interviews for completed work or even post about projects on social media while the strike is in effect. Talent is also unable to...

Strike guidelines prohibit not only on-camera work but also promotional activity, including premieres, interviews, festivals, FYC events, award shows and podcasts.

Disney didn’t let the SAG-AFTRA strike get in the way of its “Haunted Mansion” world premiere.
None of the stars of the movie were expected to be in attendance, including Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Chase W. Dillon, Daniel Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Hasan Minhaj, Marilu Henner and Lindsay Lamb all observing the SAG-AFTRA strike. The studio still rolled out the red carpet at Disneyland in Anaheim Saturday night.
Director Justin Simien told Variety he was “sad” his cast couldn’t attend, but understands why and supports the actors walkout. Press were initially told that Simien would not be doing interviews.

In April 2021, it was announced that Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, who co-wrote Bridesmaids and co-starred in Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, would be writing a Disney live-action musical comedy centering on evil stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella from Cinderella.
Two years later, Mumolo finally gave an update on the project at Monday night’s premiere of Joy Ride, in which she is also featured.
“Well, you know, sometimes you get fired,” Mumolo told The Hollywood Reporter, then clarifying that the two are “currently on hold” while another writer has been brought on to take a stab at the story. “Scripts go through a lot of writers so we would have been really lucky and rare to be the only writers on that one. So there’s now another writer,” she continued. “We definitely worked on it, we got pretty far into the process and then we have...

At first glance, Sleeping Beauty seems among the Disney Princess films least likely to live up to the modern era of feminist storytelling. The titular character, Princess Aurora, has so little agency in the film that falling into a cursed sleep seems like a continuation of her early years. Aurora never gets a chance to choose her own destiny. So how could anyone make a case for this as a feminist film?
The answer to that, dear readers, is that the film isn’t about Princess Aurora at all. The film isn’t about supposed hero Prince Philip. It’s about an epic struggle between good fairies and an evil one. The Disney version of Sleeping Beauty is about a political divide in the world of fairies: those that bestow their blessings on humanity, and those who consort with monsters. And all of the major players in this struggle are women.

Disney Animation is responsible for some of the most delicious villains to ever grace the silver screen. Who doesn't adore the back-stabbing, fratricidal Scar from "The Lion King" or the cackling Queen from "Snow White"? Classic Disney baddies aren't just fun to hate -- they're just fun. There's so much joy to be had, watching the regal Shere Khan suddenly go feral on Mowgli in "The Jungle Book" or Vincent Price's Professor Ratigan sing about his nefarious plans with unbridled glee in "The Great Mouse Detective" (arguably the film that was truly responsible for the Disney Renaissance).
By this point, you've undoubtedly gotten wind of us online grumps bemoaning the lack of dyed-in-the-wool, unsympathetic villains in Disney movies of late, be they animated features or live-action remakes. It's not automatically a defect, mind you. "Encanto," for example, doesn't need a Big Bad to explore themes about generational trauma or...

It’s kind of funny now, but there was a time when Walt Disney Animation Studios refused to even make a sequel to their classic works. Millennials of a certain age will of course recall the deluge of straight-to-video sequels released by the Mouse House in the 1990s and early 2000s, but those were never made by Wdas Proper, which for the whole of the 20th century almost always viewed every effort as a single work that should not be revisited.
How times change.
In the 21st century, Wdas has gotten with the program as the Walt Disney Company’s priorities have shifted from creating new characters to curating and maintaining the popularity of existing ones. It’s why we’re right now anticipating Frozen III and Zootopia 2. But that’s still demure when compared to the larger Walt Disney Pictures umbrella, which has been mining the animation vault for...

As written by J. M. Barrie in his original 1904 play, “Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up,” the century-old name Peter Pan has always been synonymous with a severe case of arrested development. More expressly, the fear of adulthood, the immature reluctance towards embracing the responsibilities and pains of being a grown-up, unable to gauge the earned rewards of such hardships.
So what could a 21st-century version of such arrested development look like? One that has something to say to today’s grown-ups both mesmerized and puzzled by a fiery younger generation vastly different than them, and today’s kids, being raised by an unprecedented sense of individuality? With “Peter Pan & Wendy,” soulful auteur David Lowery tries to find an answer with mixed results that’s fascinating and refreshing in parts and somewhat wearisome on the whole.

Ted Lasso star Juno Temple is ready to make her debut Marvel.
The actress, who has earned two Emmy nominations for her work on the hit Apple comedy, is in negotiations to join Tom Hardy in Venom 3, the next installment in Sony’s Spider-Man-related universe of characters.
Kelly Marcel, who worked as a scribe on the previous installments, will be making her directorial debut with the feature. She is also writing the script from a story by herself and Hardy.
The duo will produce, along with Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal and Hutch Parker.
Details are being kept under wraps but one source said Temple may be playing an existing Marvel character.
Michelle Williams played the romantic lead in the first two Venom movies.
Temple has prior comic book movie experience, having been part of the casts of 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and 2014’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

From Disney darling to pop star, Dove Cameron's career has undergone quite the evolution since she began acting in her early teens. The versatile actor's earliest fans grew up alongside her as she played identical twins "Liv and Maddie" for four seasons on the hit Disney Channel show. But Cameron's professional acting career began even earlier, when she memorably guest-starred in two episodes of "Shameless" as Holly Herkimer, a young woman who was interested in Lip Gallagher (Jeremy Allen White).
Cameron's early work in "Shameless" and "Liv and Maddie" showed off the actor's range. Right from the start of her career, it was clear she could pull off comedic and dramatic roles, just as she could pivot between family-friendly fare and more daring projects. In recent years, she's continued to challenge herself as an actor with roles in B.J. Novak's directorial debut, "Vengeance" and Hulu's comedic...

Burny Mattinson, a Disney Legend who served as an animator, producer, director and story artist in his nearly 70-year career with the studio, died Monday at the age of 87 following a short illness. Disney announced his death on their official website.
The story goes that Mattinson, who was born in San Francisco in 1935, was transformed when his mother took him to see Walt Disney’s “Pinocchio” at the age of 6. He knew what he wanted to do. As Don Hahn, who produced some of Disney’s most beloved movies during the Disney Renaissance, said of Mattinson’s life: “His life could be a Disney movie: teenaged kid shows up at the Disney gate with his portfolio under his arm and stays for 70 years. He was our story sensei, a brilliant draftsman who showed us what it was like to grind on a story until it was right.”

The Hollywood trend of taking characters who are primarily seen as villains like "Venom" and turning them into anti-heroes goes well beyond the world of comic books, as Disney has also been turning to some of its own animated antagonists for the same kind of treatment over the past decade or so. Just last summer saw Emma Stone devour the screen with her unique portrayal of "Cruella" (which is a lot more fun than a lot of folks give it credit for), but it was Angelina Jolie as "Maleficent" that got the ball rolling.
The 2014 reimagining took the "Sleeping Beauty" villain down a much different path than her animated counterpart, positing the mistress of all evil as more of a tragic figure done wrong by Sharlto Copley's duplicitous King Stefan. The movie lacked a certain spark that would have made it truly stand out as a villain story, but...

For seven years, Disney's Once Upon A Time oscillated between being truly good and original content to being a trainwreck of what-the-hell-was-that?
Once Upon A Time Season 1 had a great hook and kept many people interested through Once Upon A Time Season 3. After that, fans started to taper off.
I saw it through to the end, and while I'm glad I did, it meant I had to suffer through what I would argue was not only the worst season of the show but the worst season of any show ever: Once Upon A Time Season 5.
Yes, the Frozen arc was flawed, yes, Once Upon A Time Season 6 was directionless, and yes, Once Upon A Time Season 7 threw out the timeline, but Once Upon A Time Season 5 is the season that nearly led me to quit the show.
What made Once Upon A Time Season 5 so bad?
Let me break it down.

Video Version of this Article Photo/Video: Disney Villains/Hollywood Insider YouTube Channel Let’s put all the princesses, adorable animal sidekicks, and valiant princes to the side. It’s time to turn off the lights, sing songs in a minor key, and fill the room with ominous green smoke that no one knows where it came from. Let’s talk about the bad guys! Disney villains are some of Disney’s most well-thought-out characters. While I doubt you can even name the prince in Sleeping Beauty, everyone knows who Maleficent is. She got her own movie, for crying out loud! As a rule of thumb, Disney villains are always scene-stealers. They usually have one of the most epic songs in their respective movies Unlike some of the side characters in Disney movies or even the prince, Disney villains almost never are one-dimensional. Do you want to disagree with me?...

If Hope Mikaelson ever wants to overcome her reputation as the Salvatore School’s resident killjoy, showing up crying to a party she wasn’t invited to on Thursday’s Legacies was not a good start.
In Hope’s defense, her boyfriend did just dissolve into a puddle of supernatural goo, and the only reason she wasn’t invited was because everyone forgot her when she traveled through the Malivore pit — but let’s not get hung up on semantics here.

Clearly this isn’t your parents’ Cruella De Vil. This isn’t even your Cruella De Vil. However, there is something fiendishly charming about seeing Emma Stone charge into a ballroom and light her black and white dress on fire, revealing a chic red number beneath that would do Scarlett O’Hara proud. If fashion is a statement, Cruella is here to say the villain has just arrived!
Yet one can’t help but shake the certainty that by the time we actually learn the plot of Disney’s Cruella reimagining, Cruella will be in anything but black and white, or fiery red. Rather Cruella is obviously posturing to take a sideways approach to an old classic. But then again, that increasingly feels like the only direction these Hollywood redos know: the sympathetic origin story for an iconic villain.
To be clear, we’ve only gotten a glimpse of Stone as the new Cruella,...

Disney found blockbuster success in 2014 by telling the origin story of “Sleeping Beauty” villain Maleficent (the Angelina Jolie-starring tentpole grossed $758 million worldwide and led to an underperforming 2019 sequel), and now the Mouse House is hoping to have similar luck with “Cruella,” a deep dive into the younger days of the iconic “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” villain Cruella de Vil. In a big win for Disney, Oscar winner Emma Stone is playing the baddie in a story set within the 1970s London punk scene.
Disney’s synopsis for “Cruella” reads: “In 1970s London, young fashion designer Estella de Vil becomes obsessed with dogs’ skins, especially Dalmatians, until she eventually becomes a ruthless and terrifying legend known as Cruella.”
“Cruella” is directed by Craig Gillespie in his follow-up project to “I, Tonya,” which won Allison Janney the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. “I, Tonya” also picked up Oscar nominations for...
