Nairobi (Kenya), June 3 (Ians) World record holder Brigid Kosgei and the second-fastest marathoner of all time Kelvin Kiptum will spearhead Kenya’s marathon squad for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
The eye-catching selection in the squad was announced by Athletics Kenya’s vice president and director for competitions Paul Mutwii on Friday evening.
Kiptum, the newest kid on the elite marathon running block, obliterated a talented field to win the 2023 London Marathon in 2:01:25 on April 23, the second-fastest in history behind two-time Olympic champion and world record holder Eliud Kipchoge (2:01:09), reports Xinhua.
This came barely four months after the 23-year-old ran the fastest-ever marathon debut in Valencia where he smashed the course record and posted the fourth-fastest time of 2:01:53 on December 4, 2022.
Kiptum will be joined in the men’s team by Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor, who has won gold medals at the World Cross Country and World Half Marathon Championships.

Berlin, Sep 25 (Ians) Kenyan long-distance runner and double Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge on Sunday shattered his own world record, with a time of 2:01:09 to win the Berlin marathon.
It’s the second time that Kipchoge has set the official men’s world record at the race in the German capital. His previous best in an official 42.2km race was 2:01:39 set on the same course in 2018.
The Ethiopian pair of Guye Adola and Andamlak Belihu, were the only brave athletes who stayed with Kipchoge’s blistering pace until the 10km point of the men’s race, which they crossed in 28:23, well within the world record target.
But Adola, the 2021 winner, soon fell off the pace set by Kipchoge’s preferred pacemaking duo of Moses Koech and Noah Kipkemboi as they approached the 14km point. They reached the halfway mark in 59:51 well within their pre-race target...

Kenyan distance runner Eliud Kipchoge was born in 1984, when the world record in the men’s marathon stood at 2:08:05. Today, he holds the world record at that distance, having pared the time all the way down to 2:01:39. That achievement, not to mention back to back gold medals at the Tokyo and Rio Olympics, have inspired many to declare Kipchoge the Goat (greatest of all time) in the marathon.
Kipchoge is known for his humility, but when pressed about what makes him better than his competitors, he concedes, “I think the difference between me and other marathoners is the professionalism. I am a real professional as far as running’s concerned,” he tells Deadline. “I follow what is required in sport. I really work hard. Even if I don’t feel like waking up I still wake up and just push myself. That’s what I mean by professionalism.

New Delhi, March 8 (Ians) The oldest Indian record in athletics, the men's marathon, has amazingly stood unchallenged for almost 43 years in the name of Shiv Nath Singh. The latest attempt to break it here at the New Delhi Marathon was also futile as the winner, Srinu Bugatha, clocked 2 hours 14 minutes and 59 seconds.
Singh had clocked 2 hours 12 minutes over 42 kms (approximately) in Jalandhar in 1978. He passed away in June 2006, aged 56. His record, however, has stood the test of time.
Singh's record was the focus at Sunday's New Delhi Marathon and there was an attempt to break it. The centre of attraction was the Indian Army's Bugatha. "I've done good preparation to break that barrier," Bugatha had said on the eve of the race.
But when Bugatha crossed the finish line in 2 hours 14 minutes 59 seconds, it meant that India's oldest athletics record remained intact.
A debate rages on how...

A thousand years from now, when some vaguely human-like machine digs through the ashes of the Twenty-First century and tries to figure out what happened to those once-thriving animals called Homo sapiens, it may be confused about why an intelligent species that could build rockets and write songs like “Imagine” couldn’t heed warnings of its own destruction. A key question for future historians of the universe: How stupid were those humans anyway?
