Red, White And Blue
Women’s rights are high on the agenda in this year’s Oscar short film shortlists. It’s not uncommon for this to be the case, but what’s a little different this year is that filmmakers are addressing serious concerns in the US itself. Most prominent amongst the films focused on this is Nazrin Choudhury’s Red, White And Blue. Starring Brittany Snow, Juliet Donenfeld and Redding Munsell, it follows the story of a waitress who needs to get an abortion but who, thanks to the recent legal changes in her country, faces a journey of hundreds of miles to get it – not an easy thing when her family is already living in poverty. Her resources are stretched to the limit and she needs help from others to even make a start.
A couple of weeks after the shortlist was announced, Nazrin and I met to talk about the film.

Young Maddy (Juliet Donenfeld) notices when a customer grabs her mother’s arse in the café. Like the children of many a single mother who scrapes a living by waitressing in the US, she occupies a corner table, drawing with her younger brother and watching the people come and go. She watches the man for a long time; watches her mother momentarily freeze, pot of hot coffee in hand, but then do nothing; watches the boss give a look which implies that nothing can be done. Her mother, Rachel (Brittany Snow) notices her watching, and a shared horror at their vulnerability, and the injustice of it all, passes between them. It will take on an additional dimension by the end of the film.
That evening, back at home, the kinds laugh and play until they are dispatched to bed. Rachel sleeps on a fold-out sofa in the living room. One might observe.

Major spoilers for the final episode of "Better Call Saul" follow.
This might be a controversial opinion, but the series finale of "Breaking Bad," appropriately titled "Felina," has one major flaw. While it certainly gave closure to the story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), egregious fanservice helped pave that way. The involvement of Badger (Matt Jones) and Skinny Pete (Charles Baker) in his final act of revenge against the Schwartzs (Adam Godley and Jessica Hecht) always felt a bit contrived, like the point of the scene was to shoehorn in these characters first in order to clumsily tie up loose ends. It's a bit of a tedious scene in an episode that is otherwise wonderfully paced and executed.
"Better Call Saul's" finale, "Saul Gone," did have its fair share of cameos and surprise appearances, but it didn't fall into that same fanservice trap as "Felina" did. The appearances of...
