“We wanted to create a unique world that the audience bought into and lived in the reality of this character,” explains Armando Salas, the Cuban-born cinematographer for the six-part Netflix biographical crime drama “Griselda.” “We wanted people to feel absorbed into the world of Griselda Blanco.” That world looks as if it was filmed in Miami in 1978, found 46 years later and put on the air when in fact it was shot primarily in Long Beach, California in 2022. The washed-out period details and tone mirror the era when Blanco – a Colombian mother who transformed herself into a drug “queenpin” – ruled Miami as one of the first cartel leaders to bring cocaine to the United States. The limited series stars Sofia Vergara of “Modern Family” fame in her first dramatic role. “We spent a lot of time thinking about the look and feel, something based on reference material but that was our...

Eric Newman was the showrunner for the Netflix series “Narcos” in 2015 when Sofia Vergara – then in the middle of her run starring as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the multiple Emmy-winning comedy “Modern Family” – invited him to her home to pitch him on the idea of her fronting a project where she portrayed the Colombian drug “queenpin” Griselda Blanco. “Obviously I knew her work and was a fan of hers,” Newman recalls. “I also knew she (Vergara) was Colombian, which is an important distinction. And I knew a lot about Griselda Blanco and was fascinated with her as a character. I felt that if Sofia was willing to take the risk…just the thought that she was interested in doing this was appealing. So I went into the meeting very excited and hopeful that I would be met with a level of passion and conviction that would help make my decision very easy – and I was.

Sofia Vergara is hardly the first person you would think of when deciding to cast the role of a real-life cartel boss (or “queenpin”). The actress who co-starred for 11 seasons as the feisty Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on “Modern Family” – a role that earned her four consecutive Emmy nominations – certainly had comedy chops to spare. But after watching the 2006 documentary “Cocaine Cowboys” and seeing a profile of Griselda Blanco, Vergara felt an odd kinship with the kidnapping, murdering drug lord who wreaked untold misery while bringing cocaine to Miami in the 1980s. “I wanted to do more acting and was looking for someone that I felt I could (portray) because I don’t have any acting training,” Vergara explains. “That’s how I found Griselda. Not that I would kill anyone, or sell drugs, of course. But like her, I am Colombian, I’m a woman, a mother, I’m an immigrant.

Netflix reported its first-quarter 2024 earnings Thursday, revealing it added a whopping 9.33 million paid subscribers.
Analysts consensus estimates were for Netflix to add 3.93 million paid subs globally in Q1 (to reach 264.21 million), according to StreetAccount. Per Netflix, it has now climbed to 269.60 million subs as of March 31.
These impressive Q1 results come following a better-than-expected 13.1 million subscribers added for the fourth quarter of 2023, which was a Q4 record for Netflix. Despite this back-to-back growth worth boasting about, Netflix announced Thursday it will stop reporting quarterly sub totals beginning in 2025, a move that is sure to shock an industry that has been fueled by the battle for streaming subscribers for years.
The Q1 2024 lineup that fueled Netflix’s sub growth included its live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” the “Game of Thrones” creator’s sci-fi series “3 Body Problem,” Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentleman,” the latest season of “Love Is Blind,...

Sofia Vergara is back on our small screens in a big way thanks to the her new Netflix series “Griselda.” The lavish production chronicles the rise of Griselda Blanco, known as the “cocaine Godmother,” as she flees from Medellín, Colombia, to Miami and creates one of the most notorious cartels in history.
Vergara gives her best performance in years as the ruthless, demanding, and brutal Griselda. She owns every scene she’s in and eats up not just the scenery but the entire cast, too. She commands every moment and delivers a complex portrait of a powerful woman, with critics agreeing Vergara is at the top of her game.
Barry Levitt (Empire) observed: “‘Griselda’ has given Vergara the chance to prove that she’s also a gifted dramatic actor — a challenge she more than rises to. Vergara (who also serves as executive producer) practically dissolves into the role, delivering an astonishing performance…...

Rome Streetz recently connected with Method Man on “Pz n Qz,” a standout track from Rome’s abruptly released, characteristically stellar, Wasn’t Built In A Day, with producer Big Ghost Ltd. The New York Mc tears through Big Ghost’s spooky keys from the outset, showing off his technical prowess but also dispensing wisdom like, “Ignorant Indians always gon’ outnumber the chiefs / How a lost nigga gonna lead?” Even before signing with Griselda in 2021, Rome has been a revered lyricist, twisting up multis and dropping gems on collaboration projects...

Netflix is headed West.
The streaming giant has handed out a six-episode, straight-to-series order for American Primeval, a limited drama set to star Taylor Kitch and from exec producers Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) and Eric Newman (Narcos).
Described as an ensemble drama, Netflix described the series as a “raw, adventurous exploration of the birth of the American West. The violent collisions of cultures, religions and communities as men and women fight and die for control of this new world — for a land they truly believe is their destiny. The [series] tells a story of the sacrifice all must pay when they choose to enter a lawless and untamed wilderness.”
Kitsch will star as Isaac, a traumatized man struggling to overcome his demons and find a reason to live in this brutal and punishing world.

Bardo follows the story of a journalist and documentary filmmaker as he finds himself on a journey to connect back with his past and his Mexican heritage.
Daniel Giménez Cacho, who plays Silverio and Ximena Lamadrid, who plays Camila, recently sat for an exclusive with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss what it was like working with renowned five-time Academy Award-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu.
“Right before we began shooting, we rehearsed in a Hacienda, a hotel very secluded sort of in the middle of nowhere in Mexico,” Lamadrid revealed. “We stayed there for about to or three nights and we were rehearsing with the four of us – Griselda [Siciliani], Daniel, Íker [Sánchez Solano] and I with Alejandro doing a lot of the acting exercises, connecting, getting to know each other. It never felt intimidating. It never felt like he was this huge director and we had to sort of aspire to work with him.
