It must have been a surreal night at the Grammy Awards for boygenius, who earned wins in three categories. But what was truly surreal was the moment the trio ran to the stage to accept the Best Rock Performance trophy, all while the house band played Mr. Bungle’s wonderfully eccentric tune “Carousel.”
The bizarre moment happened during the “Premiere Ceremony,” which took place before the main nationally televised event. In presenting the Best Rock Performance category, Rufus Wainwright announced the winners as boygenius, who beat out Arctic Monkeys, Black Pumas, Foo Fighters, and Metallica for the award.
The Grammy band then kicked in to the Mr. Bungle song, and after a few moments, the members of boygenius — Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers — came running down the aisle to accept the award.

Former Mr. Bungle member Theo Lengyel has been arrested in connection with the homicide of his girlfriend Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann, a resident of Capitola, California.
Lengyel was taken into custody by the Capitola Police Department on Tuesday (January 2nd) after previously being named a “person of interest” in the investigation.
Relatives of the victim reported her missing on December 12th after a week-long lapse in contact. A missing-person investigation was launched, and her vehicle was then found in front of Lengyel’s home.
According to investigators, Lengyel did not cooperate with police and was subsequently named a suspect when “it became clear that foul play was involved,” per a press release from the Capitola Police Department. Lengyel was also reported to have traveled from El Cerrito, California, to Portland, Oregon, in the days surrounding Herrmann’s disappearance.

Empire State Bastard, the recently formed extreme-metal group featuring members of Biffy Clyro and veteran drummer Dave Lombardo, have announced their debut album Rivers of Heresy.
The LP unveil follows the release of the trio’s fiery debut single “Harvest” and a freshly inked deal with Roadrunner Records. The group includes Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil and Mike Vennart, alongside Lombardo and live bassist Naomi Macleod (Bitch Falcon).
As heard on “Harvest,” the band is far removed from Biffy Clyro and makes proper use of Lombardo’s virtuosity to create absurdly brutal music, inevitably reaching heavy metal’s furthest extreme: grindcore.
“I set about making the most fucking poisonous vile music I possibly could,” admitted Vennart in a press release, “just unabridged hatred in musical form.”
Added Neil, “Lyrically, it’s as misanthropic and nihilistic as I’ve ever written.”

The Melvins’ Buzz Osborne has shared a sprawling new song, “Delayed Clarity,” from his upcoming album as King Buzzo with Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn. The record, Gift of Sacrifice, is out August 14th via Ipecac Recordings.
The track opens with a long instrumental intro, as a simple acoustic guitar strum drifts above an atmospheric hum and the periodic footsteps of Dunn’s bass. The song begins to open up as King Buzzo’s vocals enter the track alongside jagged strings, both of which guide “Delayed Clarity” to strange but mesmerizing places.
