The Kingsmen director Matthew Vaughn is interested in producing and potentially directing a new action sci-fi film called Courage. The script for the film comes from Stranger Things Executive producer Karl Gajdusek.
Deadline Hollywood reported that Vaughn is circling the project whose plot is being kept under tight wraps. The only information out there is that the film has an "epic premise, a drama in the vein of Inception and Edge of Tomorrow."
Vaughn is best known for directing both Kingsman films, Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class. He will produce Courage with Michael Ellenberg. No other details have reported, but we'll keep a close watch for more information on this one as it develops...

When I first heard that we were getting a Jumanji sequel with Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan, I was expecting a disaster. Then when the trailers were released I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it looked! But, as you know, trailers can be deceiving.
A bunch of critics recently started sharing their reactions to the film on Twitter and it turns out Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle is actually a surprisingly great and entertaining flick! I was really hoping this would be the case, and now I'm even more excited about seeing the movie!
Read the reactions below and let us know if you're looking forward to checking this Jumanji sequel out!
I can now say that the biggest surprise of the holiday season is #Jumanji. It's super entertaining & very funny w/ terrific cast chemistry (especially b/t @TheRock & @KevinHart4real). Video game fans will dig it even more.

The classic Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day is the most famous movie example of a time loop scenario in which a character must relive the same day over and over again, but there have been plenty of others since 1993. The concept seems to be back in fashion in Hollywood these days, with films like Edge of Tomorrow, […]

Mel Gibson and Frank Grillo will star in Boss Level, a new time-loop thriller from the director of The Grey.
Last month, Blumhouse and Universal’s Happy Death Day successfully retrofitted the ever-growing subgenre of Groundhog Day-adjacent films to the slasher movie form. So it only stands to reason that there must be other types of time-loop thrillers we can see, right? And now here’s one that has war themes and Mel Gibson and Frank Grillo to boot.
Indeed, as revealed via Deadline, Gibson and Grillo are teaming with director Joe Carnahan for Boss Level, a new action-thriller about military veterans with a time-bending premise. In a project also based on a script by Carnahan, Boss Level follows Grillo as a retired special forces operative who finds himself trapped in a never-ending loop that constantly results in his death. While two movies don’t make a trend….does three? Films with characters caught in a loop don’t come around very often, but in recent memory, the gimmick has been given a sci-fi touch with “Source Code” and “Edge Of Tomorrow.” Now, audiences will circle back to another movie using that storytelling device.
Mel Gibson and Frank Grillo make the unlikely leading duo of Joe Carnahan‘s “Boss Level.” The video game-esque title seems appropriate, with the story retired special forces veteran who keeps living the day of his death over and over again, and has to figure out how to break the cycle, and whose behind nefarious scheme (my guess?

When, in his Iliad, Homer described love as “Magic to make the sanest man go mad” he probably didn’t think that the line would be used some 3000 years later to provide the title of the best episode of Star Trek: Discovery yet. Frankly, such limited thinking makes me wonder just how imaginative he really was. But whether he wants the honour or not, he’s got it, because this was Star Trek at its absolute prime vintage best. So a very simple premise. Much like 1993’s Groundhog Day and more recently 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow, Happy Death Day has a protagonist reliving the same day on repeat. This type of story-telling can be incredibly clever and fun and after seeing the trailer for Happy Death Day, the idea of mixing this premise with the horror/slasher genre had me all sorts of excited.
Much to my dismay Happy Death Day is a muddled film to say the least. Starting off in the vein of Scream, it quickly transitions into a straight-up comedy, including a lively musical montage of the lead actress getting killed over and over. This is just one example showcasing the fact that ‘Happy Death Day’ cannot decide what type of film it wants to be. Given that this is a Blumhouse production it’s fair to assume this film wanted to walk the line blending...

Sometimes all you need in Hollywood is an idea that executives don’t have to think too hard about. So when screenwriters Zach Dean, Jim McClain, and Ron Mita sent “24 Hours To Live” around town, they must’ve rattled off “John Wick,” “Flatliners,” “Jason Bourne,” “In Time,” and “Edge Of Tomorrow” as similar movies, because this trailer sure plays like an unholy mix of all of those.

The concept of the same day repeating has become familiar in Hollywood, with Groundhog Day just one of the many films and TV shows that have made use of this time-loop technique.
As characters in these projects relive one specific day over and over again, they usually learn something about themselves through such repetitive behavior.
Films like Edge of Tomorrow and Before I Fall and TV shows like The Mindy Project and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have all used the time-loop format as a storytelling device.

Blumhouse’s spunky time-loop thriller Happy Death Day plays like a CW-ized Edge Of Tomorrow rehash with the heart of Scream Queens – except, like, totally without self-awareness. Whether Christopher Landon’s vision takes itself too seriously, not serious enough or just plain skimps on horror, Scott Lobdell’s story is basic with a capital “Blah.” That’s not to say fun isn’t had, it’s just all a collegiate Mean Girls schtick that never matches up to university slaughterers like Sorority Row. For a movie about temporal anomalies and never-ending birthday horrors, there’s something unjustly mundane about a glorified slasher drama without the decency to get wild with kills. Not that its PG-13 rating would dare show such bloodshed anyway…

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide release movies. Blade Runner 2049 received rave reviews last week, but that did not translate to box-office success as the movie stumbled to a $32.8 million opening against a $155 million budget. The sci-fi flick has a chance to retain the top spot, however, as the competition this week looks relatively weak—there’s the revenge thriller The Foreigner, and the Blumhouse horror flick, Happy Death Day.

Warner Bros.'s release of Blade Runner 2049 isn't getting October off to the kind of start September saw one month ago. The dystopian sequel, arriving 35 years after the original, crash landed over its three-day opening, falling well below even the most modest of expectations. At the same time, Fox's The Mountain Between Us didn't exactly light the world on fire in its attempt at counter-programming, though it did top Mojo's pre-weekend forecast, while Lionsgate's release of My Little Pony squeaked over Mojo's meager expectations. Meanwhile, Focus's Victoria and Abdul expanded into moderate release and scored solid numbers, and A24's The Florida Project saw strong returns in its limited opening. With an estimated $31.5 million, Blade Runner 2049 finished atop the weekend box office, but fell well below expectations. Entering the weekend the Warner Bros. release, in association with Alcon Entertainment and Sony, was expected to deliver anywhere from $45-...

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 flopped. Spider-Man: Homecoming hit. But which has grossed the most money?
By now, we’ve all been well schooled in how the Spider-Man movie franchise has played out. Sam Raimi’s first two films were excellent, and raging hits. Spider-Man 3 was, by Raimi’s admission as well as many others, a cluttered mess, and not so successful. Then, in came Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man reboots. They were brought to a close when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did underwhelming business at the box office, leading Sony to abandon its then-planned Spider-Man movie universe.
Now, though, it’s happier times. Sony has been collaborating with Marvel on Spider-Man films, and the first full fruit of that – Spider-Man: Homecoming – has been one of the successes of the summer. Rightly so, too.
All well and good, right?
Well, sort of. Because what all this...

Jessica Rothe is ready to live, die, repeat in Happy Death Day, the latest stab at youth-oriented horror from Blumhouse. Looking like a giddy combination of Groundhog Day, Edge of Tomorrow, the Final Destination series and a few generic slasher movies tossed in for good measure, Happy Death Day follows a young woman named Tree (just go with it), played by Rothe, who keeps re-living the same day over and over again. As if that weren’t annoying enough to begin with, it also happens to be the day in which she’s murdered by a masked killer. The only apparent way to get out of the loop is to stop the murderer once and for all.

Groundhog Day popularized the idea of a character (Bill Murray) forced to relive the same day over and over again. The movie was very funny, but also sweet, poignant and romantic. Ever since then, filmmakers have been drawn irresistibly to the tantalizing premise, adding their own distinctive spins, as in the terrific Run Lola Run, Timecrimes, Source Code, Edge of Tomorrow and this year's Before I Fall. The horror genre has been well-represented as well, with titles like Camp Slaughter, Triangle and Haunter. Now a new approach to the premise is on its way. Happy Death Day starts with a young woman waking up in a college dorm room with no memory of how she got there. Soon enough, however, she discovers that her life is in danger if she can't solve a horrible...

Shared universes are all the rage these days. Marvel started the trend almost a decade ago and each major studio now seems eager to establish their own. While Marvel has perfected the formula in which you focus on a specific character’s story first and then slowly introduce them into a larger universe, this is an element that other studios have chosen to ignore. Warner Bros. couldn’t wait to get their Justice League film together so after Man of Steel, they rushed into Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which was a huge critical misfire. Suicide Squad was another hot mess, and while Wonder Woman is undeniably great, one must wonder (pun somewhat intended) if it was so well received because it focused on a single character and her arc. Now we have established her and she will most likely be one of the highlights of this year’s Justice League,...

Things aren’t so hot on the anime/manga adaptation front. Fans of the medium have been hungry to see some their favorite stories hit western shores in the live-action form, and for all intents and purposes, there has only been one real success. That comes in the form of Edge of Tomorrow, a film based on a Japanese light novel that didn’t do so hot in theater, but was praised by critics, and went on to garner enough of a following to warrant sequel discussions. Apart from that, films like Speed Racer and Dragonball: Evolution have either bombed at the box office or failed on every possible level as a piece of entertainment.
Ghost in the Shell seems destined to fall in with the majority of anime adaptations. Despite Scarlett Johansson’s name being attached to the film, it looks like you can add another check mark in...

It was animated “The Boss Baby” (20th Century Fox) vs. manga remake “Ghost in the Shell” (Paramount) starring Scarlett Johansson at the weekend box office.
As expected, the week’s two new wide releases combined to gross just under $70 million, but with a shocker: the latest DreamWorks Animation release took the lion’s share of that total. $100-million actioner “The Ghost in the Shell” turned out to be yet another pixel-packed movie to be met by blah critical and domestic audience response. Foreign will have to save the day on this one.
Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” (Disney) barely missed its third #1 weekend, but propelled the Top Ten box office to a 37 per cent ($43 million) improvement over last year (when nothing much was going on). The year-to-date uptick remains a steady five per cent. And that’s ahead of the expected huge April 14 opening for F. Gary Gray’s...

Friday a.m. update: Last night, Paramount's Ghost in the Shell brought in $1.8 million from Thursday night previews in 2,229 locations starting at 7 p.m. This isn't an uncommon result and actually matches one of our comparisons from our weekend preview below as Edge of Tomorrow also brought in $1.8 million and went on to open with $28.7 million in June of 2014. A closer comparison is also from Paramount as 10 Cloverfield Lane also brought in $1.8m in Thursday previews before opening with $24.7 million last March. Other comparisons used in our weekend preview are listed below: Lucy - $2.74m Thursday / $43.9m Opening Weekend Now You See Me - $1.5m Thursday / $29.3m Opening Weekend The Maze Runner - $1.1m Thursday / $32.5m Opening Weekend Fox and Dreamworks' The Boss Baby wasn't too far behind, grossing a strong $1.5 million from ~2,700 theaters on Thursday evening with screenings beginning at 5Pm. As always with animated titles, it isn't easy to draw...

Scarlett Johansson’s role as The Major in “Ghost in the Shell” has faced nonstop controversy, as some fans have accused the film of whitewashing by casting a white actress to portray a previously Japanese character. A new Fandor video by Lj Frezza briefly explores the history of whitewashing prior to this film through some particularly egregious examples, including “Aloha,” “Speed Racer,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” “Doctor Strange,” “The Last Airbender,” and “Dragonball Evolution.” The video essay also compares and contrasts the different types of whitewashing exhibited through the variety of titles.

Ever since news came out about a new version of The Matrix, the internet has been up in arms. But that's largely because we don't know many of the specifics about the project yet, so it's still more of an idea than a tangible thing. Using footage from other movies (including Lucy, Edge of Tomorrow, and John Wick), editor Alex Luthor has created a fan-made trailer that makes the idea tangible and shows the potential of what a new film in this universe could look like.

Remember that Venom film that Sony Pictures was working on when The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was still a thing? Well, the studio is finally moving forward with it, and they plan to release it in theaters on October 5th, 2018.
According to the report, Alex Kurtzman, the writer of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and director of Universal Pictures' upcoming reboot of The Mummy, will be directing Venom. He was previously attached to the project last year.
The last we heard, Dante Harper (Edge of Tomorrow) was writing the script and the movie was being envisioned “as a franchise apart from and unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie in the works with actor Tom Holland."
I doubt this movie will be connected to the McU. This is probably just going to be a standalone franchise that they hope to build.
