Doctor Who has a habit of taking a throwaway line and making it into a big deal.
In 60th anniversary special “Wild Blue Yonder”, Russell T. Davies wrote what seemed like a passing joke about Isaac Newton mishearing the word ″gravity″ as “mavity” before committing to the bit and changing the word in the timeline from that point onwards, making the gag not so inconsequential after all.
Mavity isn’t alone in the show’s history. Throwaway lines have been seized upon and expanded over the years, some by the show’s fandom, but also by its writers. What started as world-building, texture or a dramatic beat has become the foundation for a whole new level of storytelling.

A stark wooden cross stands in a moonlit cemetery in the opening episode of Fallout, Amazon’s eccentric and capacious adaptation of the video game series. From each arm hangs an IV bag that feeds a yellow liquid into a grave. There lies the body of Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins), an erstwhile cowboy who struck gold as a western film star before being blacklisted for alleged communist affiliations. Cooper lived in a distinctively retro-futurist United States. In this alternate universe, the 2070s were marked by escalating war between America and China and seemingly stuck in the 1950s, with black-and-white TVs and classic cars—plus robots that helped apron-clad homemakers around the house. Then the bombs fell, in a bout of mutually assured destruction that eradicated almost all life on Earth.
More than 200 years after the nuclear calamity, a trio of wary mercenaries dig up Cooper’s tomb and find a coffin chained shut.

The second episode of 3 Body Problem shows Ye Wenjie’s journey as she develops contempt for humankind and its inherently invasive nature. As she sends a message of invitation to an unknown alien species to conquer the planet, the plot finally reveals one of the major themes of the series. The mysterious events happening on Earth are indeed associated with an extraterrestrial entity. Because of the revelation of an alien presence, it finally makes sense why Auggie was plagued with hallucinations of the countdown, and as soon as she puts an end to her research, the image disappears. Jin, on the other hand, explores the game inside the VR headgear. The NPCs inside the game inform Jin of her mission to help the civilization survive an apocalypse during the chaotic period of the planet. It seems the game is invite-only, and when Jack puts on the headgear, an AI beheads him in the game.

Let’s raise a toast to the inventor of karaoke, the late great Japanese engineer Shigeichi Negishi. He devised the first karaoke machine in 1967, the “Sparko Box.” This invention changed the soundtrack of our lives forever. Negishi’s death was announced this week, at the age of 100, which means a century of making the world a louder, more tone-deaf place. His legacy is that all of us who are terrible singers can live out our tawdriest pop-star dreams for a few minutes of karaoke glory. We owe him so much.

The 77th edition of the British Academy Film Awards will be held on February 18, 2024. This year, the BAFTAs will be hosted by David Tennant, who is fondly known among fans as the tenth incarnation of the Doctor in the sci-fi series Doctor Who. Tennant, whose credits include shows such as Broadchurch and Jessica Jones, will host the BAFTAs, which the Scottish actor is himself excited about.
David Tennant in Jessica Jones
During an interview, Tennant spoke about hosting the UK’s most prestigious awards ceremony. At the same time, he was asked about his preparation for serving as the master of ceremony and whether recent award show debacles would affect him when he takes the stage at the Royal Festival Hall, in London, later this week. Here is what Tennant said about hosting the BAFTAs and why wasn’t afraid of bombing on stage.

Donna Noble is angry. She agreed to come with the Doctor through space and time with the belief that he could do heroic works. But when she accompanies him to Pompeii in 79 Ad, Donna learns that the Doctor can’t change history at will, which prevents him from rescuing a family from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
“Some things are fixed, some things are in flux,” the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) tells Donna (Catherine Tate). “Pompeii is fixed.”
While that difficult conversation from the Doctor Who season four episode “The Fires of Pompeii” haunted Donna’s initial partnership with the Doctor, the duo’s reunion allowed them to tinker with a historical moment that apparently wasn’t fixed. At the start of “Wild Blue Yonder,” the Doctor and Donna briefly land in 1666 England and meet Sir Isaac Newton. Apparently not remembering that he, in his fourth incarnation, dropped the apple on Newton’s head,...

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who “Wild Blue Yonder”
The second of Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary specials has arrived, delivered in almost total secrecy that did a lot to stoke fan speculation and theories. Not only were shots from this episode conspicuously few and far-between in the promotional material, no advance copies were made available to the press, which is why you might be reading this slightly later than normal.
Honestly, I’m still not sure what all the fuss was about. The need for secrecy, I mean. The fandom was absolutely stoked, of course, theorising and piecing together the words-not-spoken to create the expectation of a multi-Doctor, madcap romp befitting a 60th Anniversary Special. Get out of here, “The Day of the Doctor!” Fie on your lack of CGI Eccleston! This is clearly set aboard the Memory-tardis!
That… was not a thing that happened tonight. But before we get to that,...

David Tennant and Catherine Tate one again got lost in space-time in Wild Blue Yonder, an hour of television brimming with all the mystery and humor we’ve come to expect from Russell T Davies-scripted Doctor Who.
First, a very quick recap of last week’s The Star Beast to jog your memory: The Doctor and Donna Noble are rocketing through time and space in a broken Tardis. They had just defeated the Meep and eagerly boarded the Tardis before it malfunctioned. Donna, having blue-balled her own cosmic doom by sharing Time Lord energy with her daughter Rose, is fierce,...

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Dan Winters)
It will tell the complete off-the-court story behind basketball’s racial integration, beginning with the Boston Celtics’ surprising second-round selection of Cooper during the 1950 NBA draft. Some people might be concerned about the spy balloon detected over Montana this week, but not Jimmy Fallon. During his monologue on Friday’s episode of “The Tonight Show,” Fallon found the silver lining: “The balloon part makes it kind of cute.”
And then he did the exact joke we’ve been waiting for people to make about it — involving “Yellowstone,” of course, and that was delightful too.
If you just woke up from a two day nap and need a catch-up, what happened is that on Wednesday, defense officials in the U.S. and Canada announced that what appears to be a surveillance balloon originating in China had been spotted floating in the stratosphere above Montana.
Now, in case you have relatives who consider Tucker Carlson a reliable news source, the reason officials aren’t shooting it down is because it’s 31 miles up, its size has been roughly compared to three buses,...

Inspiration is a funny thing. It can hit you anywhere, at any time, often when you least expect it. For Isaac Newton, it was in an apple orchard. For M. Night Shyamalan, it was at a Denny's. That's where he was when he came up with the idea to write his 2002 movie "Signs."
Before we get to that, though, we have to understand Shyamalan's mindset at the time. He had broken out in a big way with the Academy Award-nominated "The Sixth Sense," but his follow-up, "Unbreakable," received a much more mixed response. The domestic box office was less than 100 million, a respectable number but also less than a third of what "Sixth Sense" had brought in. The response to that film -- which has since earned plenty of praise upon reflection -- made the director reconsider his frame of mind when making that film. As he told The Ringer...

Academy Award-winning actor Eddie Redmayne was one of many who attended a private funeral service Saturday for Stephen Hawking in Cambridge, England. Redmayne, who played Hawking in the 2014 biopic The Theory of Everything, gave a reading from Ecclesiastes during the service.
Hawking, who suffered from motor neurone disease, died on March 14 at the age of 76. He left a legacy behind one of the greatest minds when it came to science, black holes and other wonders of cosmology. His book, A Brief History In Time was written in 1988 and became a best-seller. To this day, it remains an influential piece of popular science literature.
According to the Associated Press, Nearly 500 guests attended Hawking’s funeral. In addition to Redmayne, Astronomer Royal Martin Reese gave a reading. Eulogies were also read by one of Hawking’s children as well as one of his former students. The service was officiated by the Rev.
