Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” has quickly become one of television’s most exciting shows. Based on the book by Mick Herron, the show combines razor-sharp writing (from showrunner Will Smith of “The Thick of It” fame) with masterclass acting from the likes of Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas.
The series follows the lives of those working at Slough House, a division of MI5 where disgraced agents who have made mistakes are exiled. It’s full of wit and humor, as one would expect from a show created by an alum of “The Thick of It,” but it’s also a genuine thriller, too, as all the best spy stories are. And critics have fallen for it since its inception, continuing to heap praise on this third season.

After cleaning up at the 2021 Emmys with wins for Best Drama Series (“The Crown”), Best Limited Series (“The Queen’s Gambit”) and Best TV Movie (“Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square”), Netflix is now looking to finally conquer the Best Comedy Series category, and “The Chair” represents one of its best chances at doing so. Set at a fictional New England university, the show boasts a diverse ensemble of seasoned performers, four of whom – Bob Balaban, Jay Duplass, Nana Mensah and Sandra Oh – recently joined showrunner/executive producer/writer Amanda Peet for a virtual 2022 Emmys FYC panel moderated by actor and author David Duchovny. Watch the video Q&a above.
Oh, who serves as an executive producer in addition to playing lead character Ji-Yoon Kim, was quick to cite Peet’s casting process during a discussion of what makes the show work as an accurate depiction of the world of academia.

“Big Little Lies” was a breakout hit when it aired as a seven-episode limited series in 2017. Based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, it was supposed to be done after those seven episodes, wrapping up its story about wealthy Monterey moms and a mysterious death. So it was understandable to approach season two with skepticism. Was there really more story to tell, or just a cash cow to be milked?
The critical response to the new season, which premieres on Sunday night, June 9, thankfully suggests the former. As of this writing it has a MetaCritic score of 82 based on 27 reviews, none of them negative and only one of them classified as mixed. Those reviews are based on the first three out of seven episodes, which critics were given early access to, and those episodes find actors Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz and company ripping into...
