Closing out the year’s first episode of The Tonight Show, Atlanta rapper J.I.D. performed his viral hit “Surround Sound.” The catchy song, which was first released two years ago, found second wind last December due to the creation of a TikTok “Ceiling Challenge,” where people mount their phone to a ceiling and perform a choreographed dance. To date, more than 57,000 videos have been posted featuring the track.

Cecilia Cassandra Peña-Govea first became La Doña when she was studying at Uc Santa Cruz. She would use “La Doña” as a playful nickname to describe her bossy and maternal attitude among her housemates and pretty soon, it followed her back to San Francisco’s Latinx corridor, where she had been playing with her family band since she was seven.

There won’t be any thirsty fans on Jon Batiste’s watch. The musician is on hydration duty and anxiety control on his latest single, “Drink Water,” which will appear on his forthcoming studio album World Music Radio out Aug. 18. He recruited Jon Bellion and Fireboy Dml to help deliver the song’s essential messaging: “Take a deep breath, and drink water.”

Previously best known as the band leader for Stephen Colbert‘s “Late Show,” musician Jon Batiste had an explosive couple of years in 2021 and 2022, taking home an Oscar and then five Grammys. Now he has announced his follow-up album, “World Music Radio,” set to be released on August 18. Along with the announcement, Batiste released the new single “Calling Your Name” as a preview of things to come. Watch the visualizer for the single above.
Batiste said in a statement, “I created this album with a feeling of liberation in my life and a renewed sense of exploration of my personhood, my craft and of the world around me unlike anything I had ever felt before.” It’s no wonder he’s feeling creatively liberated after being feted by his industry peers. In April of 2021 he received the Oscar for Best Original Score, shared with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, for the Pixar animated film “Soul.

Everything about Jasmine Rose Wilson is a rarity, from her zodiac chart as an Aquarius rising (which astrologically means she’s seen as a unique individual) to the distinctive sound of her voice — low-ranging and contralto — down to the vintage green pants from the Seventies that she’s wearing when we meet. It’s an exciting time to be a fan of sharp, focused music — and if the artists who kicked off Rolling Stone‘s Future of Music SXSW showcase at Acl Live at the Moody Theater in Austin on March 14 are any indication, there are even better things to come.
Spill Tab opened the first night of the four-night showcase with a few notes of deep-rumbling bass, some tight drums, Claire Chicha’s voice, and not much else. And that was enough. On record, Spill Tab is a compellingly lo-fi solo project for Chicha.

The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia are replacing Kanye West as headliners at Coachella, an official poster for the music festival revealed on Wednesday. Earlier this week, West dropped out of his 2022 Coachella appearance. The rapper was originally set to headline the music festival alongside Billie Eilish and Harry Styles. The reason for West's cancelation still remains unclear, but sources told Variety that West had not rehearsed or prepared for his appearance.

Earlier this year, a debate briefly flared on social media: where have the superstars gone? What happened to the days when Kendrick Lamar and Drake battled for global supremacy, Kanye West elicited praise from the likes of David Lynch, the Future Hive controlled rap Twitter, Lil Wayne was the best rapper alive, and Nicki Minaj commanded the Hot 100? With those “stadium status” acts largely past their imperial phases – perhaps the jury is out on Pulitzer Kenny, who has yet to issue a follow up to his 2017 album Damn – the genre seems irrevocably atomized.

Doja Cat has released a new song and video, “Need to Know,” from her upcoming album, Planet Her, out June 25th.
“Need to Know” boasts a crisp beat of booming bass hits, sharp drums, and atmospheric synths over which Doja Cat spits a pair of verses that lean into delightfully lurid punchlines (“Sorry if I gave a random erection/Prolly thinking I’m a telekinetic”). The track also arrives with a futuristic music video that finds Doja Cat donning full alien gear and enjoying a night on the town in a space-age club.

At the end of June, the singer-songwriter Noah Gundersen announced plans for a new album titled Lover. “This record is deeply personal,” he said in a statement. “It’s about love, it’s about failure, it’s about drugs, it’s about sex, it’s about age, it’s about regret, it’s about itself (very meta, I know) and it’s about finding peace.”
But peace proved temporarily elusive. That’s because earlier in June, Taylor Swift had already announced the release of her own new album, also titled Lover.

Having the No. 1 project in the country is old hat for J. Cole, but the instant success of Dreamville’s highly-anticipated “Revenge of the Dreamers III” collection, which features collaborations with more than 25 artists, writers and producers, took many by surprise.
The first installment of the series arrived in 2014, followed by “Revenge of the Dreamers II” one year later. Both had buzz, but didn’t set the charts on fire like “ROTD3,” the result of a by-invitation-only 10-day studio session held at Tree Sounds Studios in Norcross, Georgia.

Logic and Eminem recruit a pair of noteworthy stunt doubles in the video for “Homicide,” the rappers’ collaboration from Logic’s recent album Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

For Logic’s replacement – capitalizing on a popular meme – the manager tracks down “Squints from The Sandlot,” actor Chauncey Leopardi, while Eminem is portrayed...

As a songwriter and producer, Warren “Oak” Felder’s resume encompasses hits from Nicki Minaj (“Your Love”), Usher (“Good Kisser”) and Alessia Cara (“Here”). He’s been in the industry for nearly 15 years and, until 2018, he had never heard anyone say “skip rate” in the studio.
“That word was not uttered,” Felder says. But it’s become increasingly common: “Now there are conversations we all have as songwriters — ‘yeah, we just want the skip rate of this song to be super low.'”

Boogie and Eminem drift through rooms filled with graffiti and dripping blood in their brooding “Rainy Days” video. The clip utilizes weather imagery to highlight the lyrics’ bleak mood — from clouds hovering overhead to lightning striking Eminem and illuminating his skeleton. “I’ve been thuggin’ through my rainy days, for days/I ain’t really tryna hang today, today,” Boogie sings on the moody chorus. “I need changes in a major way, a way/I just pray I never fade away, away,”

Rising Atlanta Mc J.I.D. made his television debut on The Tonight Show Wednesday, teaming up with Bj the Chicago Kid and Thundercat for a performance of “Skrawberries.”
The performance featured a simple stage set-up, with the trio standing in front of a giant screen filled with the shimmering image of the bottom of a pool. J.I.D. brought some tumult to the serene scene as he tore breathlessly through “Skrawberries,” while Thundercat laced the track with bass and Bj the Chicago Kid crooned the hook.

J.I.D’s “151 Rum” is an unrelenting song. Over the Christo and Nice Rec production, the Atlanta rapper launches into a double-time flow that would make André 3000 circa-2000’s “B.O.B.” proud. In the hands of most rappers, adding the subtitle “A Film By” to a song would be obnoxious at best, a cliché at worst. Thankfully, the Dreamville Mc manages to paint a cinematic story of poverty, potential robbery and death in a way that earns its subtitle.
J.I.D.’s flow is the crowning achievement of “151 Rum.
