Whew, it’s not even May, and the cinematic “body count” rises up considerably with another lone, determined warrior facing nearly insurmountable odds. I suppose this is more of the “John Wick” effect, as filmmakers try to “up the ante” and deliver a flick with near wall-to-wall frenetic action. So far this year we’ve gone from the spy showdowns of Argyle to the avenger of the elderly The Beekeeper, and winding up a couple of weeks ago with the manic Monkey Man. For this week’s thriller we’re sent to a near future time in an exotic foreign land as, in a nod either to old Variety newspaper headlines or the beloved ABC Tgif sitcom, Boy Kills World.
And it is a nasty dystopian world for the preteen boy (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti), who is being trained in the jungle by the surly, “slave-driving” Shaman (Yayan Ruhian). And...

From Garrett Bradley: Devotion, published by MIT Press. In this interview from 2019, the art historian Huey Copeland speaks with the artist and filmmaker Garrett Bradley on the occasion of the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston exhibition Garrett Bradley: American Rhapsody. This text first appeared in the exhibition catalogue.America.Huey Copeland: I’d like to begin by talking about the ways you’re engaging the archive in your work, recruiting a range of different materials, even outtakes from your own films. Your process—mixing and working on different projects simultaneously—seems to resonate with but also exceed what scholar Saidiya Hartman calls “critical fabulation” in terms of posing the question, “How do we return to and engage the archive in order to reframe it with all of its liabilities and possibilities”?1 In this sense, your work also resonates with what I’ve recently called “black auto-citational practice,” a modality that...

Those who don’t follow professional wrestling may not appreciate just how tough and grueling it is. It isn’t enough to be on the road 200+ days a year, getting dropped on your head or your back every night, dealing with injuries, losing your spot on the roster, and worse. If you’ve seen films like The Iron Claw, The Wrestler, or the old Beyond the Mat documentary, you know that professional wrestling is grind like no other.
But the other aspect that goes underappreciated is how much wrestling relies on acting. If you have any hope of making it big, it isn’t enough to be able to do a tope suicida or Texas Cloverleaf on the way to a 5-star mat classic. You have to be able to act your role, day in and day out. Often, you have to act live, in front of an audience of thousands,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 finale.] All of Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 was leading up to the moment Percy (Walker Scobell) would battle his Olympians cousin, Ares (Adam “Edge” Copeland). Walker Scobell tells TV Insider it was the scene he most looked forward to filming, and he didn’t shy away from the physical challenge it posed. In the TV Insider video interview above, Copeland tells us all about his Ares fight training with Scobell, who was committed to making this an epic fight between the demigod and the god of war. In the Episode 8 finale, Percy and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) found themselves on the Montauk beach after using their magic pearls to escape the Underworld in Episode 7. Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Ares were waiting for them when they arrived. As the Oracle’s prophecy foretold, Percy faced the god that had turned in his effort to restore ...

The season finale of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” brought the debut of the King of the Gods himself, stolen lightning bolt and all — Zeus, played by the late Lance Reddick. And, according to series star Walker Scobell, Reddick was a lot like the God of Thunder, in that “his presence demands respect.”
In the final episode of the season, now streaming on Disney+, Percy Jackson (Scobell) manages to make it up to Olympus to return Zeus’ stolen bolt. Alas, Zeus doesn’t care about the fact that Percy didn’t steal it, nor that he brought it back. He’s preparing for war regardless, and Percy only gets to leave because he brought the news of Kronos attempting to return.
Unsurprisingly, Reddick makes for the perfect Zeus, and Scobell readily agrees. Looking back on working with the actor, Scobell remained reverent of the actor beloved for “The Wire” and “John Wick.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the season finale of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Percy Jackson has restored some order to Mount Olympus — for now.
The Season 1 finale of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians uncovered the truth about who stole the Master Bolt, as well as their motive. After their run-in with Ares (Adam Copeland) that resulted in the trio stealing back his shield in order to make it to Los Angeles before the solstice, a trip to the Underworld reveals that Ares was never their benevolent savior in the first place. In fact, he definitely had something to do with Percy being framed for stealing the Master Bolt.
Once Percy, Annabeth and Grover manage to escape Hades without Percy’s mom, they confront Ares about conspiring with Clarisse (or so they think) to wreak havoc on Mount Olympus. Walker Scobell, who plays Percy, went head-to-head...

Wrestling fans will be delighted by Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ casting of the war god, Ares. Aew‘s Adam Copeland, aka Edge, plays the fiery god in the Disney+ original series, and TV Insider has the exclusive first look at Copeland in his debut episode. Ares makes his grand entrance in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 Episode 5, “A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers,” premiering Tuesday, January 9 at 9/8c on Disney+. In it, the quest deepens as Percy (Walker Scobell), Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) are tasked with a favor from a fearsome opponent. Ares fits that bill quite nicely, but he’s not the only god or monster seen in Tuesday’s episode. Episode 4 left off with Percy plummeting from the top of the St. Louis Arch into the Mississippi River below, landing safely thanks to a little well-timed help from his dad, Poseidon, from up in Olympus.

The defense of Young Thug began Tuesday with the rapper’s attorney, Brian Steel, explaining trap music to grandmothers.
“He is not running a criminal enterprise on Cleveland Avenue to gather money and power,” Steel says, arguing that by 2014, the rapper, whose legal name is Jeffery Williams, was a superstar who wouldn’t have had anything to gain and everything to lose by running on the street. “He is not sitting there telling people to kill people. He doesn’t need their money. He’s worth tens of millions of dollars.

F.L. “Bubba” Copeland, mayor of Smiths Station, Alabama, and pastor at First Baptist Church in Phoenix City, killed himself on November 3 after a conservative blog reported that Copeland posted memes and photos of themself in women’s clothing online under the pseudonym “Brittini Blaire Summerlin.”
Last week, the conservative news blog 1819 News, once owned by the right-wing Alabama Policy Institute, published a post written by Craig Monger, entitled The Secret Life of Smiths Station Mayor and Baptist Pastor F.L. ‘Bubba’ Copeland as a ‘Transgender Curvy Girl.’

In the midst of a great debate about the future of the U.S. news business, the British are coming.
Katty Kay, the veteran BBC newscaster, is set to launch a new deep-dive interview program that will take her away — not permanently — from her usual role covering U.S. politics in favor of long-form conversations with interesting figures. In the first nine-episode season of “Influential with Katty Kay,” the journalist will interview actor Wendell Pierce, dancer Misty Copeland and author Ken Follett, among others, all in a longform format that will put emphasis not only on what makes them famous but also some of their interests.
“You interview people in one way in news or politics. You are trying to catch them maybe saying something they don’t necesssarirly want to say or in an unguarded way. There’s a combative nature, which can be exhilarating, but it’s definitely combative,...

Out October 26th, Police Diaries is billed as “the band’s truest account of their early days.” It compiles scans of original diary entries written during The Police’s “starving years” between 1976 and 1979, supplemented with new commentary to give those candid accounts some context. It’s all fleshed out with a series of photos, including some never-before-published.
Police Diaries is available to pre-order now in three different editions: Standard, which includes just the book; Signature, which includes a signed copy and a bonus demo CD; and Ultimate, which features a vintage-bound hardback, a Giclée print, and more. In Stewart’s own words: “It’s a big, noisy book about one heckuva ride.”
Copeland also recently hopped on Consequence’s The Story Behind the Song podcast to discuss The Police’s hit “Roxanne.

New Delhi, Aug 18 (Ians) Former Australia fast-bowler Trent Copeland said that it was disappointing to see former West Indies cricketer Marlon Samuels being found guilty of corruption charges against him while adding that at the same time, something like this happening is just not surprising.
On August 16, Samuels was found guilty of four offences under the Emirates Cricket Board (Ecb) anti-corruption code following a hearing by an independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal. The charges are related to the 2019 edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, where Samuels was a member of the Karnataka Tuskers squad but did not play a single game.
The charges relate to failing to disclose the receipt of payment or gift, as well as failing to disclose to the designated anti-corruption official, as well as failing to cooperate with an investigation and causing a delay by concealing information that may have been relevant.
“What I do know is how common this stuff is.

Manchester, July 21 (Ians) Former Australia cricketers Ian Healy and Trent Copeland were united in their criticism of the visitors’ field placements and bowling tactics after England ended Day Two of the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford on 384-4, with a lead of 67 and put themselves in a commanding position.
Opener Zak Crawley slammed a magnificent 189 off 182 deliveries while Joe Root and Moeen Ali hit half-centuries each as England got the momentum of the match in their favour as Australia were rattled and looked listless in the effort of putting the hosts on backfoot.
“It was not a day to be proud of whatsoever. We couldn’t keep things tight. Cummins had a terrible day in the field. He dropped two catches and didn’t see one. He kept bowling half-paced half-volleys. They bowled straight to (Crawley) early (but) you have to get the ball away from them and not hit from their favourite areas.

When Misty Copeland filmed the last scenes of the short Flower, she was, in her words, “very pregnant.” Not only was she blooming into motherhood, she was entering a new beginning as a producer and actor.
Flower is the first project from Copeland’s Life in Motion Productions, which she co-founded with fellow American Ballet Theatre dancer-turned-producer Leyla Fayyaz. Directed by Lauren Finerman and written by Fayyaz, the 28-minute short made its debut at the Tribeca Festival earlier this month, and it will be screened July 1 at the Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park as part of its Summer in the City series.
The film follows Rose (Copeland) as she carries the weight of providing a home, caring for her dementia-suffering mother and teaching young ballerinas in her Oakland community, which is gentrifying at an alarming rate.

London, June 30 (Ians) Former Australia cricketer Trent Copeland believes Todd Murphy is the perfect replacement for injured Nathan Lyon should the veteran off-spinner be ruled out from the remainder of the Ashes series.
On Day Two, Lyon was running in to take a catch of Ben Duckett off the bowling of Cameron Green in the leg-side after tea in the 37th over, when he pulled up sharply while running towards the ball.
The injury was so serious that Lyon had to go off the field by taking the support of a member of the Australian team’s medical staff. On Friday, Lyon arrived at Lord’s on crutches, as Cricket Australia announced the premier off-spinner has been diagnosed with a significant calf strain.
It added that a call on Lyon’s availability for the rest of the Ashes will be taken once the ongoing second Test at Lord’s ends.

Melbourne, May 25 (Ians) Former Australia fast-bowler Trent Copeland believes the side will bring the best out of veteran opener David Warner to perform in next month’s World Test Championship (Wtc) Final against India and The Ashes in England.
Apart from a defiant 200 against South Africa at the McG in December last year, Warner has struggled for runs in the format, making a total of just 26 runs in three innings in this year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in India before returning home due to injuries.
Moreover, Warner averages only 26.04 in Tests in England, and had a terrible time in England during the last Ashes tour in 2019, averaging 9.50, and veteran pacer Stuart Broad took his wicket seven times.
“Warner has been a great of the game in all formats for Australia over a long period of time. What I love about this scenario is that (Warner) is a dog with a...

In an interview on a Christian nationalist broadcast, Donald Trump vowed to empower religious leaders politically, by permanently ending restrictions against churches that weigh in on elections. “They’ve silenced you,” said Trump. “Christianity, I believe is being hit much harder than any other religion is.”
In his comments, aired Tuesday night, Trump blasted the so-called Johnson amendment, which dictates that nonprofits, including churches, lose their tax-free status if they weigh in directly on politics. “We never enforced it. MSNBC Film’s “Guerrilla Habeas” pulls back the curtain on the intricacies of the broken U.S. immigration system by revealing how hard immigration lawyers must fight to reunite immigrant families with their children and loved ones.
In an exclusive clip shared with TheWrap, lawyers Sarah Gillman and Gregory Copeland navigate an almost impossible circumstance as they desperately work to halt the deportation of Baba Sillah and reunify him with his family. When the attorneys hear that Sillah is about to be deported from New York’s JFK airport, Gillman and Copeland immediately hustle to file a petition to block his deportation — despite being a three hour drive away in a snowstorm.
While the lawyers were certain they wouldn’t make it to JFK before the flight was scheduled to depart, they determined they would stretch the rules ever so slightly to file their petition online before calling the judge and demanding a hearing.

The set list for the Police’s first concert consisted of seven songs, and drummer Stewart Copeland estimates they got through all of them in about six minutes. “We were fast,” he says. With the exception of “Landlord,” which Sting cowrote, and a cover of the Animals’ “It’s My Life,” Copeland tells Rolling Stone the songs were “all my concoctions.”
One of the set list’s curiosities is “Clown’s Revenge,” a charging prog-punk hybrid that sounds a bit like what X was doing around the same time in L.

Alan Copeland, the songwriter, Grammy-winning arranger and ultra-smooth vocalist known for his many years with The Modernaires and performances on Your Hit Parade and The Red Skelton Hour, has died. He was 96.
Copeland died Dec. 28 in an assisted living facility in Sonora, California, his friend Bob Lehmann told The Hollywood Reporter.
As recently as this fall, Copeland was still singing and playing keyboards in a quartet called Now You Hazz Jazz. “It was his dream to play in a small group until the last curtain, that’s how he termed it,” said Lehmann, the drummer.
Copeland wrote or co-wrote songs including “Make Love to Me” — Jo Stafford’s version made it to No. 1 on the Billboard chart in 1954 — “Too Young to Know,” “High Society,” “This Must Be the Place, “Darling, Darling, Darling” and “While the Vesper Bells Were Ringing.”

Chicago – There is no bigger current icon in American ballet than Misty Copeland. The dancer, who experienced a meteoric rise nearly from the moment she took First Position, was the first black dancer to be named to Principal at the American Ballet Theatre. She has written a new book, about her mentor Raven Wilkinson, entitled “The Wind at My Back.”
The book … subtitled “Resilience, Grace and Other Gifts from My Mentor Raven Wilkinson” … is a memoir about her friendship with the trailblazing Wilkinson, which captures the importance of mentorship, shared history, and honoring the past to ensure a stronger future. Until Copeland had her breakthroughs, Wilkinson had been virtually alone in her quest to breach the all-white ballet world, when she fought to be taken seriously as a Black ballerina in the 1950s and 60s. “The Wind at My Back” tells the story of two unapologetically black ballerinas, their friendship,...

World-renowned ballerina Misty Copeland will star in and produce “Flower,” a short film that tells a powerful story through dance and movement, with a mission to highlight “intergenerational equity” and bring critical attention to the housing crisis in the San Francisco Bay area.
The project marks the first independently produced endeavor from Life in Motion Productions, the company founded by Copeland and writer-producer Leyla Fayyaz.
“’Flower’ represents the evolution of all my work as a performer, storyteller and activist,” Copeland said in a statement announcing the project. “As someone whose family experienced the instability of not always having a safe place to call home as a child, the issues of homelessness and not having access to basic life needs have always been important to me.”

Star Wars: Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3Po and its sister series The Ewoks and Droids Adventure Hour are set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. They were designed to capitalize on the characters’ popularity with children. The best way to start is with catchy tunes.
