When it comes to keeping the momentum for storytelling, writers from hit shows such as True Detective: Night Country, Irish hit dramedy Faithless and British superhero comedy Extraordinary all have different approaches for making returnable television series.
Speaking at the inaugural screenwriting festival Storyhouse in Dublin, Irish writer-actor and presenter Baz Ashmawy spoke about his debut writing project Faithless, a six-part series for Virgin Media, which follows an Irish-Egyptian dad who is presented with the life-changing responsibility of raising his three young daughters alone.
“I was more clear on the tone of it because I saw a gap in Irish shows that were either sitcoms pre watershed or crime dramas,” said Ashmawy to a packed theatre at Dublin’s Light House cinema. “I saw there was a hole for dramedy – to make someone laugh one minute and then upset them in the next scene. I’ve always found that playing...

Netflix may be undervaluing their latest original thriller from Babak Anvari by unceremoniously dropping it on the streaming platform today, but we at /Film know a solid thriller when we see it and will happily pick up the mantle to sing its praises. Directed by Anvari from a script he co-wrote with Namsi Khan, "I Came By" is a twisty thriller about a young graffiti artist named Toby Nealey (George MacKay) who intentionally tags the homes of the elite, but gets more than he bargained for after breaking into the home of a high-profile judge Hector Blake (Hugh Bonneville) and discovering the truth of his hidden basement.
Now, Tobey has put himself and his loved ones in harm's way, as Blake will do anything to keep his secret under wraps. Netflix describes the film with the tagline "Privilege hides the darkest secrets," which sounds like a no-brainer hit for the streaming juggernaut.

Netflix has a way of under-promoting their exclusive and original movies, especially when it comes to international horror, and that’s definitely been the case with Under the Shadow and Wounds director Babak Anvari‘s I Came By, a new suspense thriller that’s… streaming now?!
Much to our surprise, I Came By premiered on Netflix this morning with very little promotion. In fact, we weren’t even aware that Babak Anvari had a new movie coming out this year!
In the film, “A graffiti artist who targets homes of the elite uncovers a twisted secret in a hidden basement — triggering events that put his loved ones in danger.”
Netflix also teases, “Privilege hides the darkest secrets. After uncovering a sinister secret of a prestigious judge (Hugh Bonneville), a young graffiti artist (George Mackay) and his loved ones are dragged into a deadly game of cat and mouse.”

The Downton Abbey star plays a believably sinister villain in an otherwise underwhelming tale of a judge with a horrific secret in his basement
There’s a believably devious turn from Hugh Bonneville at the centre of new hit-and-miss Netflix thriller I Came By, a film that sadly has very little else believable in it. He plays well-heeled former judge Hector Blake, who finds himself locked in a class-based battle of wills when socially conscious graffiti artist Toby (George MacKay) uncovers something nasty in his basement. Toby and friend Jay (Percelle Ascott) have gained notoriety in London for breaking into the homes of the rich and leaving the tag “I Came By”, but when Toby delves further into Hector’s home, he discovers something he’s unable to ignore. He calls the police but Hector’s connections and wealth make him an impossible target, leading the two into war.

Dir: Babak Anvari. Starring: George MacKay, Hugh Bonneville, Kelly Macdonald, Varada Sethu, Antonio Aakeel, Percelle Ascott. 15, 110 minutes.
Exactly how much fun are we meant to be having with I Came By, Netflix’s latest glossy thriller? It features Paddington’s own Hugh Bonneville in the role of a duplicitous wretch, seen flushing ashes down his toilet with the creviced expression of a man who’s just been served subpar wine. A handful of scenes earlier, we catch him howling at the television, watching – of all things – an episode of the animated meta-comedy Rick and Morty.
His character, Hector Blake, popularly known as “St Blake”, is a former high court judge known for regularly accepting inquests on behalf of refugees. He insists to the disbelievers that, “if you knew anything about my career, you’d know that I’m anything but racist”. Just like the line, “I would have voted for...

The His Dark Materials TV series is massive in scope—not only in terms of film production, but in the sheer ambition of the story it is trying to tell. Adapted from the trilogy of the same name from Philip Pullman, the children’s fantasy saga brings together different worlds and the very different kinds of people and creatures who live in them. It’s an enormous project for one storyteller to undertake. In Season 1, the ridiculously prolific Jack Thorne wrote all eight episodes of His Dark Materials by himself. In Season 2, he has help.
Up-and-coming British writers Namsi Khan, Francesca Gardiner, Sarah Quintrell, and Lydia Adetunji joined Thorne in writing Season 2 of His Dark Materials, and in the monumental process of adapting The Subtle Knife from book to screen.

Exclusive: The writers’ room for the secretive second season of The Night Manager is complete and it’s more gender balanced than it first appeared.
I understand that Humans and Black Mirror writer Namsi Khan and The Man In The High Castle writer Francesca Gardiner are joining British spy author Charles Cumming and up-and-coming British writer Matthew Orton in the room for the sophomore run of the BBC and AMC thriller.
Although the show has yet to be officially recommissioned, and there’s plenty of rumors as to what shape it will take and which stars will return, I hear that the foursome are in full swing, working on plots for the “slowly developing” drama.
Khan and Gardiner are both rising writers out of the UK. Khan recently wrote an episode of the third season of AMC and Channel sci-fi drama Humans and was part of the writers’ room for...
