Turns out the real demon in indie horror film “Late Night With the Devil” is its use of AI.
The IFC Films/Shudder release utilized artificial intelligence for a trio of still images — title cards, specifically — intended to enhance the ’70s aesthetic, according to the film’s directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes. That has not gone over well within the creative community on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“In conjunction with our amazing graphics and production design team, all of whom worked tirelessly to give this film the ’70s aesthetic we had always imagined, we experimented with AI for three still images which we edited further and ultimately appear as very brief interstitials in the film,” the Cairnes brothers told Variety. “We feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a talented and passionate cast, crew and producing team go above and beyond to help bring this film to life. On July 12, 2023 we witnessed a true act of justice. “Jury Duty,” the Amazon Freevee cinéma vérité-style sitcom from creators Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (“The Office”) swiped four Emmy nominations including Best Comedy Series. Despite a disclaimer stating the exploration of the American judicial process is its primary goal, “Jury Duty” ends up achieving so much more. But can it pull off an Emmy upset?
The comedy category is a tricky one. Voters love to follow the multiple-winner trend. However, in recent years the TV academy has also shown an interest in going off-book by awarding more under-the-radar shows like “Fleabag” in 2019. “Jury Duty” could play that role this year, attracting voters who live in a generation that thrives on the drama of reality TV and bathes in the comfort of sitcoms. It successfully weaves the two genres with hilarious results. Viewers were glued to the screen with a great skeleton script,...

It started with a movie that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018, examining the delicate balance navigated by a Black man almost at the end of his parole. It came two and a half years before the explosion of the Black Lives Matter movement but managed to capture that social sentiment in an accessible way laced with humor and heart. A spin-off TV series made sense, but opting to make it without the onscreen star power of Daveed Diggs was certainly a brave choice. Fortunately, Starz’s “Blindspotting” has been a wonder to behold, and season two only continues to show what audiences likely didn’t even realize was missing from everything else they’ve been watching.
At the heart of “Blindspotting” is Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones), who is shocked by the unexpectedly lengthy prison sentence her boyfriend Miles (Rafael Casal) receives and is forced to move in...

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" adapts Nintendo's beloved video game franchise about the mustachioed Italian-American plumber who fights evil turtles as much as he does clogged toilets (if not more). This is the first film adaptation of the "Super Mario" games in 30 years, the last attempt being the infamous 1993 live-action film "Super Mario Bros."
That film took some nightmarish creative liberties with the character designs, using practical effects to try and recreate the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom in live action. The 2023 film from Illumination Entertainment, however, uses CG animation. As a result, the ensemble — even the inhuman characters like Bowser (Jack Black) and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) — look more or less identical to their video game appearances. Even so, the film has been met with reticence, due to the controversial casting of celebrity voice actor -- in particular Chris Pratt as Mario. The actor even acknowledged the backlash...

Maddie Ziegler has come a long way since her reality TV days. While it was clear that she shined on Dance Moms, the competition-based show was only the tip of the iceberg for her. She has successfully transitioned her talents to the big screen and has starred in a handful of movies. But what are critics saying about her latest performance?
‘Dance Moms’ alum Maddie Ziegler | Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images What TV shows and movies has Maddie Ziegler been in?
Interestingly enough, Ziegler started building her acting resume when she was still on Dance Moms. Some of her most well-known TV credits include: Drop Dead Diva, Pretty Little Liars, and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, and Dawn. But the 20-year-old also has some...

Back in the early ’90s, nerdy kids across the world thrilled at the sight of Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo wearing robot boots and standing in front of a giant metal “M.” No, we did not understand how, exactly, those blue and gray images correlated to our favorite red and green plumbers on our Nintendo systems. But we could accept some deviation in the adaptation. After all, as the tagline promised, “This ain’t no game.”
Three decades later, we’ve learned to process our collective trauma of seeing our favorite video game turned into a cyberpunk dystopian tale that made us feel things we weren’t old enough to understand. But the promise of a new Super Mario Bros. movie has reopened those old wounds. Would this version bring back nightmarish images of the heroes dancing behind giant-bodied Goombas? Would our children, too young to have lived through the...

After a 13-year hiatus, the third season of “Party Down” premiered on Starz last month, proving it’s still the most underrated laugh riot on TV. The series boasts an all-star cast including Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Jane Lynch, Jennifer Coolidge and Megan Mullally, working as caterers whose hopes at Hollywood superstardom have been dashed.
With a stellar rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ consensus reads, “Returning after a long layoff, Party Down brings patient fans a third season that’s every bit as sharp — and laugh-out-loud funny — as its predecessors.” Ignored by major awards shows for its first two cycles, the comedy created by John Enbom, Dan Etheridge, Paul Rudd and Rob Thomas won the AFI TV Program of the Year Award in 2010, where they called it “wickedly funny” and “television’s best-kept secret.” Read our review roundup for Season 3 below.

Film critics have shared their mixed reactions to Andrea Riseborough’s surprise nomination for the 2023 Oscars.
On Tuesday (24 January), the nominations were announced for this year’s Academy Awards. You can read the full list of nominees here.
Among the snubs and surprises of the nominations was the inclusion of Andrea Riseborough in the Best Actress category.
The British actor stars in indie drama To Leslie as a Texas mother who wins the lottery. But while her performance received rave reviews, the film made just £22,000 in the global box office when it was released in October, leading many to believe that not enough awards voters had seen it to be a contender.
However, in mid-January, a guerrilla campaign began for Riseborough’s nomination on social media. High-profile stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Amy Adams, Jennifer Aniston and Jane Fonda, all praised the film online, calling for it to be considered by awards voters.

Anthony Hopkins winning Best Actor over Chadwick Boseman was about as big a shocker as it gets
The ending of the 93rd Academy Awards was quite a shocker, with a run of show that shifted Best Actor to the final award of the night — prompting many to assume they did so because Chadwick Boseman posthumously was going to win the Oscar for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
It made sense. It would have been a touching way to end the show, and to pay tribute to a beloved star who died last year of cancer.
But the assumption that they moved Best Actor to the end in place of Best Picture was based on the idea the powers running the Oscars ceremony actually knew for sure who was gonna win. And if they were hoping for a Boseman victory, they made a big mistake.
