I’ll start with an important disclaimer for all readers since the following hot take will inevitably trigger strong reactions. As someone from a small European country and born in 1994, Ghostbusters (1984) was never a defining classic of my childhood or adolescence, so I don’t feel the nostalgia that many others have for the original film, although I do enjoy it. That said, I (re)watched it, along with Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters: Afterlife this week in preparation for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and – here it comes – I consider the 2021 sequel my favorite movie in the famous franchise. In fact, comparing it directly with the original – here it comes again – beyond the inevitable audiovisual improvements, I find Afterlife to have better humor, characters, and cast.

Warning: The following contains mild spoilers for the Ghostbusters franchise.
Yes, Ghostbusters is a horror movie – gateway horror to be exact. Setting aside the fact that the title literally contains the word “ghost,” a foundational element of the scariest genre, the franchise follows a group of paranormal researchers who battle entities attacking from beyond the grave. After countless rewatches, the classic films and newer sequels may not scare us much anymore, but how many times have we as genre fans asserted that a film does not have to be “scary” to be considered horror?
Genre classification is nebulous and any film that centers on ghosts has a place in the sprawling house of horror. Yes, it’s true that most viewers over the age of thirteen will find more to laugh about than scream while watching a Ghostbusters film, but each entry contains a handful of terrifying moments. This article contains some Ghostbusters: forzen empire spoilers.
You know about Zuul. You know about Gozer. You know about Vigo the Carpathian. You might even know about Dr. Rowan North. But for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, director Gil Kenan needed to pit the next generation of Ghostbusters against an all-new spook we’ve never seen before.
“You don’t get many opportunities in this world to create a Ghostbusters villain. And I took on that role with relish,” Kenan tells Den of Geek. That enthusiasm resulted in Garraka, a horned creature who can not only cover the world in ice but also controls other ghosts with a type of telepathy. To defeat this threat, the Ghostbusters need more than their tools and their talent. They must also get help from the slacker Nadeem (Kumail Nanjiani), who happens to be the last in a line of ancinet warriors called Fire Masters,...

In Hollywood, casting decisions can make or break a movie. Sometimes, the biggest roles almost end up in different hands, which changes the story. Take Ghostbusters, for example, the classic film with the guys chasing ghosts. Well, imagine if Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts were carrying those proton packs! Alongside them, crazy, right?
A still from Ghostbusters (1984)
We all know the Ghostbusters crew, isn’t that so? However, they might have looked totally different. Back in ’84, Ivan Reitman dropped this flick about a ghost-catching scientist in New York City, and it blew up. Fans and critics couldn’t get enough of it. Then, in 1989, a sequel was released, but it did not quite hit the same high notes.
Attempts to make a third Ghostbusters film persevered for quite a while, yet hit a roadblock with Harold Ramis’ passing in 2014. Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot of the franchise featured an all-female team with nods to the originals.

When Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan first conceived what would become 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, their top order of business was to reframe the franchise around a 12-year-old girl with a proton pack. Well, since then, Mckenna Grace has proven time and time again that her co-writers/directors made the absolutely right choice, as her fan-favorite character of Phoebe Spengler is currently the definitive hero of the Ghosbusters franchise.
In the Kenan-directed Afterlife sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, it’s been two years since Phoebe led the Ghostbusters to victory over Gozer at Egon Spengler’s Oklahoma farm, and she and the rest of the Spengler-Grooberson family are now full-fledged Ghostbusters, operating out of the famous New York City firehouse from Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989).

Plot: After having relocated to NYC to fight ghosts, the Spengler find themselves tangling with an old nemesis of the Ghostbusters, Mayor Walter Peck (William Atherton), who wants to shut them down for good. Meanwhile, an ancient evil will be unleashed over the city, releasing all the spirits caught over the last forty years.
Review: I was a big fan of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Jason Reitman’s film skillfully blended nostalgia with a new take on the franchise that opened up the Ghostbusters universe in an inclusive way. It welcomed new fans without alienating old ones, something the 2016 reboot notoriously failed at. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire seems to be aimed at building the franchise out more extensively. While it’s still a fun, nostalgia-driven return to the Ghostbusting universe, it’s not as good as the last film and spreads itself too thin to do the new characters justice.

Fittingly enough given its subject matter, the Ghostbusters franchise can’t seem to stop haunting audiences no matter how many times it seems like and turns out to be a futile effort. Ghostbusters II is a lazy retread incited by one of the dumbest retcons in movie history, the 2016 reboot was bombarded by misogynistic online harassment before it ever got a proper shot, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife seemed to be under the delusion that the working class schmoes from the original were actually Jedi.
Yet despite all this, the attempts keep being made and Afterlife was enough of a box office success to warrant a follow-up in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire; set to hit theaters this coming weekend. And while the stacked cast of new and returning actors alongside the inspiration from The Real Ghostbusters animated series for its villains do make Frozen Empire feel like more of a substantial leap forward,...

Ghostbusters movies stretch credulity, but this is ridiculous.
At the start of Ghostbusters II, Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) perform for bored kids at a birthday party. It’s only been five years since they blew up the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in downtown New York and destroyed Gozer’s portal atop a city high rise. And yet, no one remembers the work the boys did to save the city.
In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ghostbusters are completely unknown to Gen Z, even to the grandchildren of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), even to a kid so into podcasts that he calls himself Podcast. It’s only been 30 years since the team drove the Statue of Liberty down the center of the city.

“Where are you from? Originally?” The question Peter Venkman asks in Ghostbusters has become relevant again.
We already knew that the fifth film in the series, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, would see the return of not only the three living original Ghostbusters but also Annie Potts’s Janine as a full-fledged member of the team. But while previous reports from director Gil Kenan, who co-wrote Ghostbusters: Afterlife with that film’s director and Frozen Empire co-writer Jason Reitman, insisted that the previous film shut the door on Ivo Shandor, Gozer, and Zuul, the latest trailer for Frozen Empire shows that not every old antagonist is in the past.
The trailer opens with narrator describing a longstanding feud with the Ghostbusters, indicating a long standing grudge. “They have a minor hanging out of a moving vehicle,” the voice intones with incredulity. “Firing a laser gun.”

This article contains light spoilers for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
We’ve got one! And by “one” I mean a female Ghostbuster that even jerks might like! Maybe!
The last time we got women as Ghostbusters, sexist buffoons making bad-faith arguments about the apparent sanctity of boy Ghostbusters drowned out all discussion of the 2016 reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, preventing both those who enjoyed the movie and those who disliked it for actual sane reasons from sharing their viewpoints.
That extreme response drove Sony to return to the franchise’s roots for its follow-up Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. Although the movie took place in Oklahoma and took a decidedly dour, respectful tone, it focused on connections to the first team. It starred Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard as the daughter and grandchildren of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis). Together with their friends and their teacher Mr.

The Ghostbusters franchise returns to the big screen with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on March 29, and we’re being promised new mythology and new ghosts this time around.
The film’s official trailer previewed the new threat known as “The Death Chill,” along with a giant-sized monster that looks to be the “big bad” of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Oddly enough, it’s through an upcoming toy line from Funko that we’re learning more this week about the new main villain and some of the movie’s new spectral monstrosities.
As a word of warning, the following images/details include Spoilers for the movie…
The upcoming Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire toy line from Funko confirms that the horned monster glimpsed in the movie’s trailer is named Garraka, and the toys also preview a brand new ghost named Pukey. Additionally, they reveal that the Mini Pufts will be making a return in Frozen Empire,...

Gil Kenan has confirmed that a new villain will take the spotlight in 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire'.The 47-year-old filmmaker is helming the latest movie in the supernatural comedy franchise – slated for release in March 2024 – and explained how a new antagonist will terrorise the Spengler family after Gozer was revived for 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife'.Gil told Empire magazine: "Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in 'Afterlife', bringing Gozer back to centre-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past."But we are now in the post-Gozerian era of the 'Ghostbusters' saga, so that means we're able to stretch out and create an entirely new mythology. There is no Gozer, only… well, we don’t know yet.
After the chaos that followed the release of 2016’s series revamp Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, Sony went full nostalgia with Ghostbusters: Afterlife in an attempt to appease change-resistant fans. The studio recruited Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, as well as the original four Ghostbusters (including the late Harold Ramis in CGI-ghost form). Afterlife even brought back the main villain of that first movie, Gozer the Gozerian.
In other words, it was a textbook legacy sequel that introduced a new generation of heroes while nodding to the originals, and according to Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan, the movie’s structure demanded Gozer’s return.
“Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to centre-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past,” he told Empire. That explanation does track with...

The idea behind Ghostbusters: Afterlife was to bring the franchise back to its original roots, introducing new characters with ties to the past while also bringing the original Ghostbusters back into the mix. It proved to be a smart choice, with the nostalgia-heavy Afterlife scaring up over $200 million at the box office. But it sounds like next year’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is leaving much of the past behind, promising a new story, a new threat and new mythology.
Director Gil Kenan (Monster House) tells Empire Online, “Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to centre-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past. But we are now in the post-Gozerian era of the Ghostbusters saga, so that means we’re able to stretch out and create an entirely new mythology.”

Have you ever noticed that no matter how many ghosts get busted, there are always enough left on the loose to make a sequel? The new "Ghostbusters" era continues with "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," an oddly subtitled follow-up to 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" that's set to continue the story of a new generation of ghost-catchers while also reuniting some of our old favorites. Though we knew it would return to New York City, the plot of "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has been under wraps since the movie was first announced in 2022 -- but fans have been able to piece together a promising cast list based on an interview Winston actor Ernie Hudson gave to The Film Collective earlier this year.
"It's great to be back with Danny [Akroyd] and Bill [Murray] and Annie Potts and the new cast," Hudson let slip, adding, "It's been 40 years, it feels like family." Since then, the question has been...

"Ghostbusters" famously went through many iterations behind the scenes before it became a blockbuster hit in 1984. John Candy could have played Louis Tully, John Belushi was originally envisioned as Peter Venkman, and Eddie Murphy would have joined the team as Winston Zeddemore. But as we all know, Rick Moranis, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson stepped into those roles and cemented themselves in Hollywood history. However, there's another intriguing piece of casting you might not have heard about, and it involves the late, great Paul Reubens.
If you've seen "Ghostbusters," you know that the primary villain turns out to be Gozer the Gozerian, a shapeshifting, inter-dimensional, apocalyptic entity, who has been worshiped as a Sumerian god. Though Gozer can appear however it wants, they take the form of an intimidating woman in an ethereal body suit with terrifying red eyes and a flattop haircut. In the movie, Gozer is played by Yugoslav model Slavitza Jovan,...

Jaye Davidson's very short-lived career as an actor was a memorable one. He came out of nowhere to earn an Oscar nomination for his performance as Dil in Neil Jordan's controversial "The Crying Game," only losing out on the Best Supporting Actor award to Gene Hackman's malign sheriff in "Unforgiven." Although the film's portrayal of a transgender character is problematic, it was a stunning breakthrough performance that marked him as one to watch. Despite the accolades, Davidson didn't enjoy the attention that fame brought him (via Yahoo), but he hung in there to collect a cool 1 million for playing the alien antagonist in "Stargate," Roland Emmerich's sweeping sci-fi adventure. And then he was gone again, deciding stardom wasn't for him and focusing on a career in modeling and fashion design instead.

I did not hate Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It feels weird having to write that qualification down for a movie that received mixed-to-positive reviews (it’s at 63 percent on Rotten Tomatoes as of press time), a glowing “A” CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences, and which had a healthy, extended run at the November box office last year. Yet given the cacophony of disdain for the movie in the echo chambers of social media, it feels necessary to contextualize a movie like Afterlife before addressing news of its sequel.
Because, yes, Sony Pictures is unsurprisingly moving forward with a direct follow-up of Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters legacy sequel, with the fourth canonical Ghostbusters movie (but fifth when you count the 2016 remake starring four women) now slated for a Dec. 20, 2023 release date. That’s obviously five days before Christmas and one week following Timothée Chalamet’s Willy Wonka reboot. Perhaps more surprising though is...

The finale of "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" has proven to be somewhat of a demarcation line for viewers. Either you buy into the sentimental nostalgia of seeing Harold Ramis' Egon make one final appearance on screen or you don't and it comes off as incredibly ghoulish.
I'm personally in the former camp. Seeing Ramis on screen again, even in a CGI capacity, standing shoulder to shoulder with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson to finally put Gozer in her place was a full-circle moment that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Seeing Ramis on screen again, even in a CGI capacity, standing shoulder to shoulder with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson to finally put Gozer in her place was a full-circle moment that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I totally get the grinches on this one, though. The very idea of...

A true sequel (we aren’t counting that 2016 debacle) in the Ghostbusters franchise finally arrives, 37 years after Gozer tried to take over New York and 32 years after Vigo tormented our favorite paranormal scientists. After several delays thanks to the pandemic. Jason Reitman, the son of the original film’s director, takes over the fledging franchise and is finally the person to not only “right the ship” but also lead a new group of young Ghostbusters into their own franchise.
The Manhattan Crossrip of ’84 is in the history books and the famous Ghostbusters are no longer anything but a footnote in history. Since a ghost hasn’t been seen in decades, the original Ghostbusters have all gone their...

It's finally time for Ghostbusters fans from all generations to grab their proton packs, set their ghost traps, and put on a classic beige jumpsuit because Ghostbusters: Afterlife flew into theaters on Nov. 19! The sci-fi fantasy comedy is the fourth movie in the franchise, but Afterlife arrives as a direct sequel and homage to the original Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989). Although it's set in the present day, Afterlife contains so much '80s nostalgia. Director Jason Reitman, son of the original director Ivan Reitman, continues the franchise and his father's legacy by picking up where he left off and mixing the old cast with the new.
Afterlife follows Dr. Egon Spengler from the original Ghostbusters' daughter and grandchildren, Callie, Trevor, and Phoebe Spengler. Egon left the Spenglers (who have no money) his old farmhouse in Summerville, Oklahoma, which gives them a chance to start new lives.

“Hey flattop!” It’s a line we haven’t heard Bill Murray utter for nearly 40 years. Nevertheless, you could physically sense the waves of nostalgia it triggered throughout the audience of the Ghostbusters: Afterlife premiere earlier this week when those words were shouted again. Moments before it looked like Gozer—the Destructor Herself (or Himself. Gozer is whatever Gozer wants to be!)—had won.
She’d returned from a parallel dimension and had totally defeated the plan of young Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) to capture her essence in the giant ghost trap that Old Man Egon Spengler built beneath his farm. Instead the trap failed to go off, and poor Lucky (Celeste O’Connor) got possessed by one of the Zuul spirits, turning into a dog. All hope thus seemed lost. But that’s when the three surviving Og Ghostbusters—Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Winston Zeddemore...

This article contains Ghostbusters: Afterlife spoilers. Read our spoiler-free review here.
Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife is very much a film of two minds: it is a love letter to the past and his father’s work, and it’s also an attempt to strike out and be its own thing. The movie both basks in the nostalgia we associate with “legacy sequels” while also attempting to create a new generation of heroes who look decidedly nothing like Stantz, Venkman, or Zeddemore—although Spengler’s spirit is pretty well captured by the pint-sized Mckenna Grace.
So perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that the film’s two post-credits scenes are of similarly divided interests. One is a sweet nod (and presumable sendoff) to Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman and a briefly returning Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett, and the other sets the table for an entire shared Ghostbusters universe.

The once-prestigious Jason Reitman has remarked that after five consecutive box office bombs he felt the need to make his own Ghostbusters to finally confront the legacy of his father Ivan. If we take this statement at face value and not as a wholly disingenuous about-face, perhaps Reitman Jr. should’ve just done the “confrontation” in-person at Reitman Sr.’s long-gone downtown Toronto restaurant where the gimmick was that the chicken was uncooked or whatever. It may have humiliated far fewer people in the process.
Bringing us another franchise entry after the all-girls reboot from a half-decade ago performed slightly under expectations, Ghostbusters: Afterlife trades in bustling New York for the Canadian province Alberta doubling as rural Oklahoma, and it can certainly be said that the movie is as much of a bummer as a move to a small town would be for city kids—they being Phoebe (Mackenna...

In the lead-up to releasing “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” Sony has played it fairly tight-lipped about what exactly this movie might be: Is it a prequel, a sequel or some kind of spinoff? Pretty much any discussion of the answer will come as a spoiler to those who like surprises, so be warned that this review is not intended as a marketing tool for the studio (those seeking coy teasers are better off watching the trailers), but as a critique of what this unnecessary but enjoyable movie actually delivers.
The good news for “Ghostbusters” fans is that “Afterlife” does nothing to tarnish what has come before, overseen as it is by Jason Reitman, carrying on the legacy of his father (and “Ghostbusters” director) Ivan, who played an important behind-the-scenes role in shaping this 21st-century update. The franchise has made the family rich, spawning a sequel, an animated series, a comic book line and an ill-fated 2016 reboot.

"Ghostbusters: Afterlife" is less than two months away from hitting theaters, and so help me, if the Covid-19 pandemic pushes this movie back again, I will summon Gozer the Gozerian to destroy this planet once and for all. Those who attended CinemaCon last month were lucky enough to catch an early screening of the entire movie, and the early buzz is full of praise so far. As for the rest of us, we'll have to settle for two new "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" posters that finally assemble the entire cast of the next generation of paranormal exterminators. See them below.

As Hollywood tries to shake off a little box office rust, we’re reminded that, oh yeah, we’re getting another Ghostbusters movie. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set to hit theater on November 11 and a second trailer has just been released for it.
Much like the first trailer, we get a basic idea of our main characters and setting, but the threat is a little better explained. We still don’t fully understand what these kids are up against, but like a puzzle-based entrance to a scientist’s basement, the pieces are starting to come together.
Before we get started, here’s the trailer itself…
Okay. Now let’s get into what we see.
Carrie Coon is Egon Spengler’s Daughter
Callie (Carrie Coon) is the daughter of Egon Spengler and a single mother of two. Having lost their home and just being broke, they move to Summerville, Oklahoma, where Egon had owned a decrepit,...

“I tried to think of the most harmless thing. Something I loved from my childhood. Something that could never ever possibly destroy us: Mr. Stay Puft!”
Ghostbusters: Afterlife just revealed how it will make those words from Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz more prescient—and poetically meta—than ever. The line, from the 1984 original movie, was a contrite explanation for his impulsive decision to choose the now-iconic, pillowy “destroyer” form of ancient evil entity Gozer for its attack on the Big Apple. Now, the 32-years-awaited follow-up to the franchise’s original iteration is bringing back Mr. Stay Puft—miniaturized and multiplied. Thusly, speculation on Gozer’s prospective return is potent.
Paul Rudd’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife character, summer school teacher Mr. Grooberson, will collide with the original team’s spectral legacy, as indicated in a new teaser clip (seen below). Indeed, some grocery shopping—rife with forensically-framed Baskin Robbins...
