How often do you think about ancient Rome? If you're director Francis Ford Coppola, the answer is apparently "quite a lot." HIs latest film is "Megalopolis," a passion project that he had to finance himself in order to have full creative freedom, and it takes place in a crumbling city called New Rome, following an architect named Cesar (Adam Driver) as he seeks to build a more sustainable future. It's some wacky stuff, and Coppola has bought in completely.
The very first batch of reviews and reactions to "Megalopolis" are coming out of Cannes Film Festival in France, where the film made its world premiere. Given the movie's troubled production and absolutely wild teaser trailer, it should come as no surprise that the reviews are as intense as they are mixed, though most praise the unique sci-fi epic for its audacity and willingness to fully commit to its ideas and world.

The max in “Mad Max” stands for maximizing profit potential?
George Miller, the maverick 79-year-old Australian director, brought the fifth entry into his dystopian action franchise, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” to the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival this week.
While it’s been nearly a decade since “Mad Max: Fury Road” – the film that introduced the one-armed automotive avenger Imperator Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron but Anya Taylor-Joy in the prequel – Miller says he may not be done with stories set in the “guzzoline”-obsessed Wasteland.
“There are certainly other stories there. Mainly because in order to tell the story of ‘Fury Road’, we had to know the backstory of Furiosa and Max in the year before,” Miller said, revving up the engines of devoted fans. “That was a tool for the cast and crew. We know the Max story from the year before. I’ll definitely wait...

Furiosa: A Max Max Saga had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, nearly a decade after the debut of Mad Max: Fury Road at the same festival. The first reviews for Furiosa have begun pouring in, and while they’re just as full of praise as those first reactions, it doesn’t sound like it reaches the heights of Fury Road.
Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman said that while Furiosa contains “a handful of awesome action moments,” the action doesn’t take center stage in the same way it did in Fury Road. “The most important thing to say about ‘Furiosa,’ however, is that what it all adds up to is a movie that can be darkly bedazzling, and that will be embraced and defended in a dozen passionate ways — but it’s one that, to me, falls very short of being a ‘Mad Max’ home run,” Gleiberman wrote.

The year that was 2023 is almost over, and it was a good year for movies. By extension, it was also a good year to write about movies. We here at /Film strive to bring you reviews of every major release, and then some — but what is the role of a movie review? Some folks think a movie review exists merely to tell the reader if a film is good or bad, and nothing more. It's a guide to whether or not you should plop down your hard-earned cash at the box office. But that shouldn't be a movie review's primary goal.
A movie review should also engage with the work; to examine it, study it, and try to figure out what makes it tick. And in the end, the final choice should be yours. Often, when I file a negative review of a film, it will be met with a reply from someone stating,...

Indiana Jones returned to our screens earlier this year after a 15-year absence with "Dial of Destiny," a movie Lex Briscuso called "an action-packed, high-octane super soaker of a film, while at the same time amounting to a beautiful final conquest and farewell" in her review for /Film. The film ignores all the bad parts of "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (even poor Mutt) and has a cool sort-of crossover with "For All Mankind" in Mads Mikkelsen's character.
The biggest surprise of the film, however, is its big third-act moment. Following the wrath of God, a Templar ghost doing riddles, and literal aliens is no small feat. And yet, "Dial of Destiny" goes big and bold in its grand finale, which makes it one of the best sci-fi movies of the year.

Once upon a time, there was a virtual gathering place where minds from all walks of life would congregate together to share ideas, memes, opinions, (an unflinching amount of vitriol), and breaking news without the filter of a corporate owner. There were even little distinctive markings so members could differentiate between a random person screaming into the void and an authenticated, certified professional.
And then, tragedy struck. A wealthy albeit embarrassingly insecure wannabe leader purchased the gathering place to turn it into a personal praise circle, dismantling the culture that was working well, and replacing it with chaos. Suddenly, it became much more difficult to determine whether or not something being shouted in the gathering place was based in fact or just the unfiltered thoughts of blabbering fools. This is precisely why in 2022, people mistakenly took a scene from the Netflix film "Athena" as an act of political unrest.

Can you find the wolves in this picture? You'll be able to do exactly that without ever having to step outside the house when "Killers of the Flower Moon," director Martin Scorsese's latest crime epic, is made available on PVOD and digital. As much as fans of the visionary talent may have panicked a bit when Apple swooped in to purchase the distribution rights, making this his latest high-profile production to become destined for a streaming release as opposed to theaters, the streamer thankfully made the unusual move of giving "Killers of the Flower Moon" an extended run in theaters worldwide. That decision quite literally paid off as the film enjoyed a modest amount of success relative to its $200+ million budget, proving beyond a doubt that there still remains an appetite for adult-minded entertainment with lengthy runtimes, sobering source material, and underrepresented movie stars.

Contrary to what you might think based on the plethora of Christmas films and TV series that flooded the streaming landscape recently, we're only now heading into the final month of 2023 and the winter holiday bonanza that comes with them. For Netflix, in particular, December is a time when it pulls out the big guns, tempting its subscribers with an eclectic blend of prestige television, awards season contenders, and crowd-pleasers. This year, that includes the end of the royal drama with "The Crown" season 6, part 2, Bradley Cooper going for the gold (again) with his Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro," and whatever the hell Zack Snyder has cooked up for us with the first half of his two-part "Star Wars"-inspired cosmic epic, "Rebel Moon -- Part One: A Child of Fire."

By all accounts, director Jonathan Glazer might just have another masterpiece on his hands. The upcoming "The Zone of Interest," based on author Martin Amis' 2014 novel of the same name, takes direct aim at the most horrifying and disturbing acts of evil ever chronicled in recorded history: the concentration camp of Auschwitz. Glazer, of course, has never shied away from shining a spotlight on the darker aspects of human nature, even expanding into the realm of sci-fi with his last feature directing effort in "Under the Skin." It's hard to believe that the filmmaker hasn't actually directed another feature since 2013, staying busy with various shorts and TV specials in the years since. Now, however, audiences are getting their first look at what's sure to be an incredibly difficult (but absolutely vital) watch.

Michael Fassbender and David Fincher teaming up makes perfect sense. The duo work together so well in their new movie “The Killer” that it’s a wonder that they haven’t collaborated before. Netflix is releasing it theatrically on Oct. 27 and it will start streaming on Nov. 10.
In the new thriller, Fassbender plays a cold, meticulous, philosophizing hitman who must go on a mission to right his own wrong when he makes a mistake on a job. He’s also out for revenge, as is par for the course for a lot of assassin movies. But what isn’t par for the course is Fassbender’s lean and mean performance. We very rarely hear him speak in his actual scenes. Instead, we mostly hear him in a constantly-running voiceover, Fassbender utilizing his rasping voice to good effect. The film world's favorite persnickety stylist, Wes Anderson, is back! Already! Anderson's most recent feature film, "Asteroid City," premiered in wide release just three months ago. You're never going to believe it, but it looks like Martin Scorsese made another great film. The legendary director's latest, "Killers of the Flower Moon," premiered to critical raves earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, with Lex Briscuso heralding it as "a cautionary masterpiece on the insidiousness of white men" in her review for /Film. Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan are being praised for their performances as Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre, respectively, in “Maestro,” despite a somewhat mixed reaction. The film made its debut Saturday at the Venice Film Festival to praise for its leads though the overall reaction has been more muted than anticipated.
Directed, co-written by and starring Cooper, the film tells the story of Bernstein and his relationship with his wife, as well as the acclaimed composer’s musical work. Co-written by Josh Singer, the drama also stars Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke and Sarah Silverman.
TheWrap’s Ben Croll said the film proves Cooper, who made his feature directorial debut with “A Star Is Born,” is no one-trick pony. “The filmmaker delights in oh-so-perfect match cuts, creates transitions that render the concept of off-stage obsolete and even stages a fantasy musical number as Lenny watches an early rehearsal for ‘On The Town,...

Director Yorgos Lanthimos’ “female Frankenstein” story Poor Things, which stars Emma Stone (Cruella), just made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and the reviews that are coming out of that screening are raves that are calling the film a weird, hilarious, raunchy awards contender. Poor Things has debuted on the Rotten Tomatoes site with a 100% fresh rating, and we have gathered some of the social media reactions together for you to check out right here:

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have reteamed and the result, “Poor Things,” is being heralded as a new classic for the ages.
In “Poor Things,” Stone plays a young woman named Bella Baxter who is brought back to life by the “brilliant and unorthodox scientist” Dr. Goodwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
The reviews for the movie have been effusive in their praise and social media is hailing the film for embracing both Lanthimos’ brand of wackiness while also being extremely graphic.
Film critic Alex Billington said, “Poor Things is… the raunchiest film of the decade?! Everyone...

Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. -- better known as Indiana Jones -- has made a career out of tirelessly trotting the globe, perpetually on the hunt for the greatest and most priceless relics of the ancient world and dead-set on keeping them out of the hands of the most fearsome villains in history. But just because Indy constantly has to get his hands dirty while risking life and limb in the most remote locations, that doesn't mean we have to do the same just to watch the latest and last installment of the popular franchise. After bowing in theaters earlier this year to largely positive reviews (you can read /Film's review by Lex Briscuso here), director James Mangold's "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" is finally about to be made available for viewers to watch from the comforts of their own home.

Now that "Barbenheimer" mania has had its time, many will be wondering how the rest of 2023 could possibly live up to that singular cultural event. But if anyone can match the hype of Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig's cinematic duel, it's Martin Scorsese. Arguably our greatest living director, Scorsese is set to return later this year with what has to be easily one of the most anticipated movies of 2023: "Killers of the Flower Moon."
Adapted from journalist David Grann's book "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI," this retelling of a shameful moment in American history will explore the murder of numerous indigenous members of the Osage nation in early 20th Century Oklahoma, and it looks to be a dark and sobering entry in Scorsese's canon. It’s the first studio movie to feature a predominantly Asian cast since Marvel’s “Shang-Chi: The Legend of the 10 Rings” in 2021, and the first since “Crazy Rich Asians” in 2018 to feature Asian female leads.
In the film, lawyer Audrey Sullivan (Park) is tasked with securing a business deal in China. She brings along her childhood friend Lolo (Cola) as her translator, as Audrey was adopted by white parents. They’re joined by Deadeye (Wu), Lolo cousin. While in China, they meet up with Audrey’s college roommate Kat, a successful actress. Lolo encourages Ashley to search for her birth mother, and hijinks — with an emphasis on “high” — ensue.

It’s been a strong year so far for Paramount+, and it just got a bit better, thanks to “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”
The fantasy-heist flick based on the popular tabletop roleplaying game only pulled in $208 million in worldwide box office. But it was the most streamed movie in the U.S. last weekend, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker, which is based on viewership data from TV Time, its TV and movie tracking app with more than 25 million global registered users.
It’s easy to see why “Honor Among Thieves” has been a streaming hit since debuting on Paramount+ in May. For starters, the cast includes Michelle Rodriguez, Chris Pine and Hugh Grant. It’s also received great reviews from both fans and critics, especially when compared to the underwhelming “D&d” film trilogy that preceded it in the early 2000s.

“The Idol” — HBO’s new series starring Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye as a Svengali-like guru who takes a pop star (Lily Rose-Depp) under his wing — premieres on June 4 after a full year of making headlines for its reportedly “chaotic” production, “toxic” set and, according to some, “sexual torture porn” content.

Few filmmakers working today seem to know how to stretch a dollar quite like Wes Anderson. The idiosyncratic storyteller has adopted a no-muss-no-fuss method for making his movies, delivering star-studded visual spectacles such as "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The French Dispatch" for a fraction of the cost of your average tentpole.
His new movie, "Asteroid City," is no exception. In contrast to its budget, Anderson's first true sci-fi film boasts a painstakingly detailed and extremely-stylized setting to go with its massive cast, which includes such first-time Anderson movie thespians as Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Maya Hawke, Hong Chau, and Steve Carell. That's in addition to the many previously-established members of Anderson's growing acting troupe like Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, and Bryan Cranston, among many, many others.
"Troupe" feels like the proper word to use there, in light of Johansson's comments about her experience shooting "Asteroid City.

This year’s Cannes has its first crowd-pleasing winner, even if Pedro Almodóvar’s “Strange Way of Life” is technically not a feature-length film.
Starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, the 31-minute western concerns a cowboy riding across the desert to visit a lifelong friend who realizes that his old pal wants to be more than friends. The short feature marks Almodóvar’s second English-language offering following the 2020 feature “The Human Voice” starring Tilda Swinton.
Judging by the immediate post-screening response, next year’s Oscars may have a front-runner for Best Short Film.

This post contains very light spoilers for "Beau is Afraid," a movie that is practically impossible to spoil.
"Beau is Afraid" has been swimming around in director Ari Aster's mind for nearly a decade. Before his demonic family film "Hereditary" burst onto the scene and the springtime cult of "Midsommar" welcomed actress Florence Pugh into their ranks, Aster made the short film "Beau" about an anxiety-ridden man trying to escape a terrifying apartment complex to visit his mother. For Aster, his latest feature became a receptacle for a huge amount of ideas about loneliness, paranoia, and repressed Oedipal rage that all ended up pouring out into one, three-hour long epic misadventure.
Aster has truly let his gloriously demented imagination run wild with "Beau is Afraid," and while that can be liberating on the page, it's another thing entirely to capture all those wild concepts and ideas on film when...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Beau is Afraid."Ari Aster's new film "Beau is Afraid" is an elongated, abstract college-student-experimental-art-piece-cum-Oedipal-freakout that will leave most audiences either confused or outright enraged. Running three hours, the film takes place in an abstract, non-real world where guilt, fear, and panic seem to be humanity's only available emotional states. Joaquin Phoenix plays the titular Beau who, at the film's start, lives in a rundown apartment in the middle of a war zone. He has to sprint down the street and make his way quickly through his building's security door before a pursuing tattooed, black-eyed man can attack him. There is a dead body rotting in the middle of his intersection, and no one seems the least bit concerned with removing it.
When Beau requires a bottle of water to take with his medication, he finds that his apartment keys have been stolen.

Joaquin Phoenix is a talented performer who really commits to his roles, but apparently he went just a little too hard on the set of his most recent film: Ari Aster's surrealist black comedy "Beau is Afraid." At a surprise April Fool's screening of the film in New York, which was supposed to only be a 10-minute preview and a showing of the director's cut of "Midsommar," Aster shared some behind-the-scenes stories about filming such an intense story. During the Q&a, moderated by Emma Stone and attended by /Film's Lex Briscuso, Aster told a story about one day on set where Phoenix was so engaged in the moment that he actually fainted!
Fans of Aster's know he's a fairly demanding director whose storytelling style requires his actors to go to real emotional extremes. During a pivotal scene in "Midsommar" where the protagonist has an emotional breakdown and the...

March is sort of a weird, in-between period in the moviegoing calendar. With Oscars season thankfully behind us but the summer blockbuster season not quite in gear just yet, we're left with an odd mix of theatrical offerings: a handful of immensely successful franchise sequels, some notable bombs, and possibly some reason to hope. But don't let that fool you into thinking that there wasn't much else worth your time throughout the last few weeks. It just takes a little bit of digging to fully appreciate the hidden gems.

“We know that Prime members love watching spirited, adventurous stories as much as we love bringing them to audiences,” Chris Aronson, Paramount Pictures President of Domestic Distribution, said in a press statement. “We know that we can’t wait to give Prime members an early look at this epic quest.

If you're like me, you've been anxiously compiling a list of all your returning and potential new appointment TV shows coming up in March. "The Mandalorian," "History of the World: Part II," "Shadow and Bone," "Yellowjackets," "Riverdale" — it's enough to make me grateful I've yet to get into either "Perry Mason" or "Ted Lasso," both of which are also coming back that month. There is, of course, another series making its much-anticipated return in March, but we'll get to that later ... in case you couldn't guess what it is from this article's header image alone.

Historically, it's been pretty easy to tell from the outset whether you'll like a Noah Baumbach film or not. The writer-director tackles a lot of similar themes across his filmography, from the specific ennui of the educated class to the woes of growing up — even once you're already an adult. He's also a New York filmmaker through and through, with movies that feel more overtly East Coast than most. But the trailer for Baumbach's latest film, "White Noise," just dropped, and it seems set to throw audiences a few curveballs.
"White Noise" stars frequent Baumbach collaborators Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, along with Don Cheadle, Jodie Turner-Smith, and André 3000. Interestingly, it's the first movie Baumbach has adapted as a director, as it's based on the Don DeLillo novel of the same name. The brand of absurd humor featured in DeLillo's postmodern 1985 book is immediately obvious in the trailer, which...

This post contains spoilers for "Smile."
Parker Finn served up a slice of fried gold this year with his smash-hit horror film, "Smile." The Sosie Bacon, Kyle Gallner, Caitlin Stasey, and Jessie T. Usher-starring film centers on a young psychologist who is plagued with horrific and unexplainable visions, often in the form of someone smiling at her, after witnessing the traumatic death of one of her patients. "Smile" is the most financially successful original horror film of 2022, and feels like the missing piece of the "domino-effect curse" trilogy of "The Ring" and "It Follows."
Parker Finn first concocted the idea with his equally creepy short film, "Laura Hasn't Slept," starring Stasey in the role she returned to for "Smile." The beauty of a film centered on a curse that can be passed on from person to person is that there are no limits in terms of returning for a sequel,...

Warning: This post will contain spoilers for the 2022 film "Smile."
Parker Finn's new horror film "Smile" features an unseen demon -- a malevolent force that can take the form of any person -- that perpetuates itself through trauma. It takes possession of its victims and occupies their minds for about a week, inflicting horrifying hallucinations. In most cases, the demon's victims see -- and can have full conversations with -- smiling friends. The smile is key. At the end of the demon's tenure inside its host body, it forces them to die by suicide in front of another person. The demon will force its victim to smile while doing its violent deeds. The new witness, being traumatized by the violent death they just saw, will, in turn, be infected by the demon. The new witness will then also experience hallucinations and will inexorably march toward their own bloody end,...

Playing a figure as distinct as Marilyn Monroe is going to be fraught under the best of circumstances. An actor must carefully consider their approach. Does one, for instance, attempt a straight imitation of Monroe? Is it better to look and sound correct, even if it's to the detriment of bringing one's own unique acting impulses into the equation? Or does one stray far from strict accuracy, allowing themselves to emote on a broader canvas, inviting accusations of historical infidelity?
These questions weighed heavily on Ana de Armas who played Monroe in Andrew Dominick's upcoming Netflix film "Blonde." De Armas, star of "Knock Knock," "Knives Out," and featured in a notable fight sequence in "No Time to Die," plays a highly fictionalized version of Monroe in a stylized retelling of the star's life and death. Reviews for "Blonde" are already mixed, with some critics praising its willingness to take risks,...

Say what you will about Kevin Smith but ever since his heart attack a handful of years ago, the filmmaker behind "Clerks" has done precisely what he wants to do, and it's hard not to respect it — especially since Smith is making pretty cheap movies like "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" that aren't putting studios at risk in any way. But Smith may be getting ready to do something truly unexpected as he is apparently aiming to make "Tusk 2" a reality. Yes, it appears Smith is at least toying with the idea of making a sequel to his 2014 walrus horror movie. This is not a joke.
Our very own Lex Briscuso recently spoke with Justin Long, who starred in "Tusk," about his upcoming film "Barbarian." During the conversation, Long revealed that Smith is actually toying with the idea of a sequel. "You'll be happy to hear, Kevin [Smith] just announ-- I mean,...
