On Oct. 5, 2023, Variety announced its inaugural Antisemitism & Hollywood Summit. Little did the organizers know that two days later, Israel would face its worst terrorist attack in the history of the nation, with Hamas’ attack becoming the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. When the summit was held nearly two weeks later, its participants could not ignore the trauma of the moment, coupled with the simultaneous anger and fragility that they each felt.
To amplify the critically important message of the event — that Hollywood plays a vital role as storytellers that can fight antisemitism — Variety and Jewish Life Television have partnered to bring the summit to a wider audience. Jltv will broadcast a one-hour panel discussion with some of Hollywood’s great storytellers, titled “The State of Antisemitism.”

“The Drew Barrymore Show” returned from its summer hiatus Monday and all hell broke loose.
The WGA picketed Barrymore’s daytime talk show, which employed three WGA members prior to the strike. The program joins the ranks of ABC’s “The View,” which also returned. “The Talk,” “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show” have all announced their intention to return before the strike ends; they can expect the same treatment.
All daytime talk shows are not created equally as far as the WGA is concerned. “Tamron Hall,” “Live with Kelly and Mark,” and “Sherri” don’t employ WGA writers and should have cleaner comebacks. Of course, they still can’t have actor or writer guests promoting their films or TV shows. (SAG-AFTRA has been on strike since July 14; the WGA strike started May 2.)
While late-night talk shows often have heavily written sketches, monologues, and hosts who are also WGA members,...

Drew Barrymore is being criticized by fellow actors and writers on social media for her decision to bring back her eponymous daytime talk show amid the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. “The Drew Barrymore Show” is set to return Sept. 18.
While Barrymore is not violating SAG-AFTRA rules as the host of the show, her show does employ WGA writers. This means new episodes of “The Drew Barrymore Show” will have to utilize either violating WGA members, non-wga writers or no one. A spokesperson for CBS Media Ventures told Variety the show will “not be performing any writing work covered by the WGA strike.”
“Drew Barrymore has always been someone who recognized her privilege and aimed to evolve, so I hope she will reconsider this hasty decision intended to pay her crew because it weakens both unions to openly endorse scabbing,” TV writer Gennefer Gross posted.
TV personality Felicia Day added, “Sooo...

As SAG-AFTRA clocked its 40th day on strike, the union’s chief negotiator has called for leaders of Hollywood’s major studios and streamers to step in to bring the sides to a new deal and get the industry back to work.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive secretary and its chief negotiator, said the union has had outreach from industry insiders who aim to help with basic communication between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
“There is some back-channeling going on but nothing formally from the AMPTP,” Crabtree-Ireland told Variety on Tuesday after the SAG-AFTRA held a Day of Solidarity rally next to the Disney lot in Burbank. The gathering drew several thousand participants to Keystone Street in Burbank, including local labor leaders and members of laborers union Liuna, the Writers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America and stars of “The West Wing.

Thousands of union members braved a beating sun on Tuesday outside Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, as SAG-AFTRA brought out speakers including Kerry Washington, Martin Sheen and Ron Perlman as well as such labor leaders as Lindsay Dougherty, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and Joely Fisher as part of its National Day of Solidarity rally.
Burbank police officers, who closed off residential streets in the area, estimated Tuesday’s crowd to be between 1,500-2,000, but organizers SAG-AFTRA expected as many as 5,000 to attend the event, which served as a rallying cry for the Writers Guild of America and the performers union during their ongoing strikes as well as a show of solidarity with those — including the Teamsters and IATSE — whose contracts are up in 2024.
“The eyes of the world are watching, but more importantly, the American worker is watching. And like us, they are saying ‘Enough.’ Enough to low wages...

This is Day 113 of the WGA strike and Day 40 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Martin Sheen led a reunion of the cast and crew of The West Wing and embodied his character President Bartlet at a major rally in LA.
Sheen was joined by stars such as Kerry Washington and Ron Perlman at the National Day of Solidarity Rally, organized by SAG-AFTRA, the WGA and the AFL-CIO outside of Disney in Burbank.
Sheen told the large crowd that he has been a member of the actors union since 1961, the same year that he got married, so he’s pretty fond of unions.
“I was affectionately known in some quarters as the acting president of the United States. When the show ended its run in 2006, I became known in some quarters as the former acting president of the United States and I’m proud to have been part of that extraordinary company,...
