As if relationships weren’t already so complicated, in Hollywood, it is a completely different level of mess. From lies to secrets to cheating scandals, every other fairytale couple in Tinseltown has been through that and more. Especially if it is a high-profile case, the whirlwind leaves a few rumors behind in the dust. The highly publicized Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt split is a great example of that, where Pitt was once linked with Fallout star Ella Purnell.

Back when Jolie and Pitt’s separation was fresh in the air, tabloids were busy sniffing out any possible names that led to the break up of Hollywood’s once favorite couple. And one of the rumors hit Purnell smack in the face, when it was reported that she and Pitt were getting it on together.

It's been 36 hours since I finished Stephanie Danler's new book, and I'm still parsing through the feelings it surfaced. Stray is a memoir, a collection of essays. It's fearless, insightful, devastating, and beautiful. It broke my heart, and it twisted up my insides. The stories are still sitting in my gut.
I became a fan of Danler's writing back in 2016 when I read her debut novel, Sweetbitter, a book that deserved all the buzz it received when it was released - and again when the TV adaptation hit the small screen. That story is dark and sparkly, a coming-of-age narrative that centers around a young woman who dives into the New York City restaurant world. I loved the prose and the way it continued to surprise me. The same is true of Stray, but multiply that element of surprise by, well, a lot.

As a woman and a feminist, I’d like to offer this observation: There is nothing that can make you hate the word “female” like sitting in the audience of a panel devoted to women who make film or television.
The Winter 2019 Television Critics Association press tour is comprised of dozens of press conferences and panels, some of which took the forms of cooking demonstrations, musical performances, and live table reads. These gimmicks are fine; the TCAs are nothing if not a marathon, and the effort to do something different is appreciated.
However, too often the TCAs treated “women make TV” as its own gimmick, as if assembling a collection of TV producers who share a gender was enough to create a satisfying or insightful presentation.
Consider these four panels over the last 16 days:
NBC’s “Women of Drama” panel, featuring Jennifer Carpenter of “The Enemy Within,” Retta of “Good Girls,...

A Starz TCA panel comprised of the network’s leading actresses and series creators tackled the question whether life on set is getting better post #MeToo. And while many acknowledge that indeed it is, “It’s the tiny moments” per American Gods thespian Emily Browning that’s still creating confusion.
“I’m sure all of us have a nightmare we heard or experienced, but now there is a space for us to be able to tell those stories. There are certain things I don’t think people can get away with anymore. What’s still kind of evolving, and they’re not nightmare stories — it’s the tiny moments. Things that are a little bit ambiguous where a woman automatically feels like ‘Did that just happen to me or am I just being sensitive? Do I bring this story forward? Is it believable or does something worse need to happen?...

Order up! Starz apparently really likes the taste of Sweetbitter: The restaurant drama based on Stephanie Danler’s novel has been renewed for Season 2, the premium cable network announced Friday.
Season 1, which premiered in May and ended in June, consisted of six half-hour episodes. The sophomore run will up that number to 10.
The series’ return date is to be determined.
Danler, an executive producer on the series, told TVLine in April that she and Ep Stuart Zicherman considered Season 1 a prologue to the real action of the book.

Starz has ordered a second season of half-hour drama Sweetbitter, based on Stephanie Danler’s best-selling 2016 book.
Sweetbitter follows 22-year-old Tess (Ella Purnell) who, shortly after arriving in New York City, lands a job at a celebrated downtown restaurant. When Stephanie Danler was writing her 2016 novel “Sweetbitter,” she never imagined the story would be adapted for the screen, let alone that she would be the one to do so. Inspired by her own experience working in a restaurant, Danler set out to create a female coming-of-age story about a young woman who moves to New York to figure out who she is and what she wants out of life, and gets swept up in a world of love, lust, drugs, alcohol and food.
“I love Anthony Bourdain and I love all of these chef memoirs, but they’re very masculine and aggressive and testosterone-driven,” she says. “I had never seen the more sensual aspects of that way of life depicted.”
Reimagining Restaurant Life
The novel version of “Sweetbitter” is composed of short vignettes, which moves the plot along at a clip. That style lent itself easily to the screen translation.

When Tess first entered Simone’s New York studio in Sunday’s Sweetbitter, she — and viewers — couldn’t help but notice an odd furniture choice, right there in the center of the living space: a functioning bathtub, mere steps from the front door.
The set dressing — taken straight from the source material novel — may seem like a whimsical flourish in the apartment of a character who prides herself on being rather practical. But it was based on an actual Brooklyn rental in which author Stephanie Danler, who wrote the book on which the Starz series is based, once lived.

For Ella Purnell, signing on to Sweetbitter might have been the easiest career choice she's ever made. Starz's TV adaptation of Stephanie Danler's hit 2016 novel, which premieres May 10, ended up being "literally the most relatable" script the 21-year-old British actress had ever read, for good reason. The series tells the story of Tess, a young woman who boldly ditches her dull life in the Midwest for an adventure in New York City, where she comes of age while working as a server in one of the city's most revered downtown restaurants.
Since Purnell had recently moved to the city herself, digging in to her character proved to be far easier than usual, and it shows - her performance, much like the six-episode series itself, is genuine and utterly charming. In anticipation of the drama's May 10 premiere, I hopped on the phone with the Churchill star to discuss everything...

At the risk of stating the obvious, television caters to two senses: sight and sound. Starz’s “Sweetbitter,” about a young woman’s beginnings in the restaurant industry, wants to also focus on taste. The series uses creative visuals to try and conjure up taste memories in viewers, and the phrase “sweet, sour, salty, bitter” becomes something of a mantra in the second episode. It’s an interesting choice that helps to liven up what could have easily become a run-of-the-mill story.
Based on the novel by Stephanie Danler (who also serves as an executive producer and writer), “Sweetbitter” follows 22-year-old Tess (Ella Purnell) after she spontaneously moves to New York City, alone and without a real plan. Despite being an English major and only having experience in a small coffee shop, she snags a trial basis job training to be a backwaitress at a prestigious Manhattan restaurant. From there,...

Sweetbitter creator and executive producer Stephanie Danler feels like she's just a hired expert on the topic now that she's seen her project come to life.
In the interview below, she talks about the process of portraying everything just right for an on-screen five-star restaurant, including putting her cast and crew through a boot camp getting them up to speed.
Purnell plays Tess, a young woman with dreams of life in the Big City.
When she gets to New York with few skills applicable to jobs for which she applies, she's given a break by a man more interested in her personality and how well she'll train than what she has already accomplished.

Earlier this year, author Stephanie Danler and the cast of <em>Sweetbitter, </em>a new six-part Starz series based off her 2016 novel of the same name, faced premature backlash over the show's place in the #MeToo and Time's Up era.

It’s a lot more difficult working in a restaurant than it looks — even if you’re acting as a server.
British actress Ella Purnell stars as Tess, a young woman who moves from Ohio to New York City after college. And like many recent grads with big ideas and small budgets, she gets a job as a server at a trendy New York restaurant. Actually, she has to train a while before she can be a real server, and she starts out as a back waiter.
To prepare for the role, Purnell went through two weeks of “boot camp” to learn all about fine dining.

“We had two weeks of, like, boot camp, where we learned how to serve, basically,” Purnell told TheWrap in a recent interview.
“It went from everything from like how to fold napkins to and how to lay a table from opening a bottle of wine, pouring it correctly, how to do a three-plate carry, the correct way to serve,” Purnell explained. They even had a front of house consultant.
“You become physically, like, so tired,” Purnell said. “Those plates are heavy. Your back, your shoulders, your arms.”

The opening scene of “Sweetbitter” is the kind of cheesy, clichéd start you’ve seen far too many times: A young woman leaves her Midwestern hometown and moves to New York City. Without any money and left to mooch off a friend for a place to stay, she sells her car and goes looking for any job she can find. Starz has canceled the horror-comedy series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” after three seasons, the network announced on Friday.
The upcoming season 3 finale, set to air Sunday, April 29, will now serve as the series finale.
The decision comes as Starz prepares to launch two new series next month, the Mexican-American family drama “Vida” and “Sweetbitter,” an adaptation of the 2016 Stephanie Danler novel about the New York City restaurant industry.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” starred Bruce Campbell — reprising his role as Ash Williams from the “Evil Dead” film franchise — alongside Lucy Lawless, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo. “Evil Dead” filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert served as executive producers on the series alongside Campbell, Ivan Raimi and Rick Jacobson. Mark Verheiden was showrunner with producer Moira Grant.
Campbell and Raimi first teamed up for the original 1981 film “The Evil Dead.” Shot on a shoestring budget of approximately $350,000 in the woods of Tennessee, the film went on to gross over $2.4 million worldwide and achieved cult status.
The duo later reteamed for a series of sequels and a 2013 reboot before the TV series follow-up “Ash vs. Evil Dead” debuted on Starz in 2015 to critical acclaim.
