Oscar producers Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, Molly McNearney and Rob Paine, as well as music director Rickey Minor are days away from the 96th Academy Awards.
But they took time out on Wednesday afternoon to share insight into what to expect from Sunday’s ceremony. In a conversation moderated by Jacqueline Coley, Awards Editor at Rotten Tomatoes, Kapoor said this year’s theme is “human connection, emotion, inspiration and creativity.”
A major highlight that has both fans and producers excited is the news of five former winners presenting to the five nominees. The idea was inspired by Bill Condon when he produced the 81st Academy Awards. Kapoor said the team had done a deep dive into past ceremonies and that stuck with them the most. Said Kapoor, “It was this lovely storytelling and again it came down to connection. It was past winners speaking to present nominees and that lovely connection and that human interaction.

The media was not quick to embrace Black creatives nor has Juneteenth long been something on its radar. But as different voices enter the culturally and politically shifting landscape, the newly recognized federal holiday — which honors the emancipation of the last enslaved people here in the United States on June 19 — could, or at the very least should, pop up more on screens large and small.
Channing Godfrey Peoples made her directorial debut against the backdrop of Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020 with “Miss Juneteenth“: a feature film starring Nicole Beharie and Alexis Chikaeze as a mother-daughter pair navigating their opposing dreams for the young girl’s future. Before that, “Juneteenth” was the title of Season 1, Episode 9 in Donald Glover’s beloved “Atlanta”: a boundary-breaking FX dramedy about Blackness and celebrity with a surrealist twist.

Wright recently spoke out at a Q&a following a SAG Awards screening of the new Marvel Studios blockbuster alongside co-stars Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livinalli and filmmaker Ryan Coogler, moderated by Rotten Tomatoes’ Jacqueline Coley.
“I remember just that moment of going to my phone and seeing every possible American number calling me,” Wright recalls about that tragic and confusing day. “I went to my email and someone was saying, ‘My condolences.’ And I’m like, my condolences for what? I just spoke to you last night about a script, why are you emailing me that? The elegiac family drama “Minari” captivated critics and audiences at the Sundance Film Festival this past January, winning not only the Grand Jury Prize for drama, but also the Audience Award. A24 opens this red-hot Oscar contender in limited release on December 11. Inspired by the hardscrabble childhood of writer/director Lee Isaac Chung, “Minari” revolves around the South Korean couple Jacob (Steven Yeun) and Monica (Yeri Han) who had left their country in the early 1970s for a better life in California. But after several years, they are still working as a chicken sexers.
So, Jacob uproots the family, which also consists of a pre-teenage girl (Noel Cho) and the uber-adorable little boy named David (Alan Kim) who suffers from a heart murmur and moves to them a ramshackle trailer on a five-acre farm in the Ozarks. Jacob hopes to find the American success story he so craves as a farmer,...

Women are making strides toward parity in the film business but there’s much more progress to be made, panelists at the Kering Women in Motion talk said Saturday.
While women are gaining more visibility on-screen — 40% of movies were led or co-led by females in 2018, according to USC professor Stacy L. Smith – behind the scenes the figures are more dismal for women in key filmmaking roles. Marvel may have hired “The Rider” director Chloe Zhao for “The Eternals,” but overall, bigger-budgeted films are being helmed by men.
“When money moves in, women are pushed out. Women aren’t projected into leadership roles, and when they are, they are punished more harshly,” Smith said at the talk moderated by Variety editor-in-chief Claudia Eller.
The numbers are even more daunting for female minority directors. According to USC research released earlier this year, only seven of the 46 women working across the 1,200 most popular...

The Milken Institute Global Conference hosted the panel “Advancing Inclusion and Addressing Inequality In Entertainment” which focuses on the progress that film, TV and music have made when it comes to diversity and inclusion, a conversation that remains floating on the surface of the entertainment industry. From discussing stats to the cancellation of One Day at a Time to what needs to be done to promote change, a lot of ground was covered — including Green Book, a film that has become a divisive conversation topic since it won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

For the 300 top-grossing films from 2015-2017, white male critics are 31 times more likely to have a top review on Rotten Tomatoes than female critics
At the Tiff Industry Conference, Dr Stacy L Smith, founder and director of the entertainment-inequality think tank the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative (Aii), unveiled findings revealing the stark lack of diversity in film criticism.
Examining reviews for the 300 top-grossing films aggregated on Rotten Tomatoes between 2015-2017, the ratio of reviews by top white male critics compared to those by top female critics was nearly 31 to 1, according to Smith and Aii’s latest study.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: In honor of “BlacKkKlansman,” which opens in theaters this Friday, what is Spike Lee’s best film?
“4 Little Girls” (1997) Jacqueline Coley (@THATJacqueline), Rotten Tomatoes
I was sorely tempted to choose “Do The Right Thing” as Spike Lee’s best film and it seems the logical choice. What Spike did with “Do The Right Thing” forever changed cinema, for filmmakers everywhere, but especially for African Americans. It’s brilliant, that’s beyond dispute but, it’s not his best.
His best is a quiet little documentary he released in 1997 about 4 little girls who were murdered by the Kkk in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. “4 Little Girls” power is in the faces. The faces of girl’s families the member of the Civil rights movements and are impossible to shake.

Black voices have always been essential to American cinema, but they’re especially potent this summer, with two exciting upcoming releases: Boots Riley’s “Sorry To Bother You” and Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” have impressed critics and magnified the beating pulse of black identity politics, while skewering those persons and institutions that hinder black social and economic advancement. Though vastly different in tone and technique, they echo similar themes: Black American political disillusionment, the struggle for higher standards, and the pressure to maintain an authentic version of oneself.
With these potent ideas playing out at movie theaters across the country, we’ve arrived at a perfect opportunity to examine the best black American films of the 21st century.
From renowned stories and landmark performances to culturally relevant comedies and iconic directors, each of these movies have molded the landscape of black cinema into what it is today. Dee Rees, Ava DuVernay,...

Last Friday, we woke up to the tragic news that beloved chef / writer / traveler / movie-lover Anthony Bourdain had died. Among his other notable virtues and accomplishments, no one had ever put so many different meals on screen, or served them to us with such rich context.
In that spirit, we asked our panel of critics to name the most appetite-whetting meal they’ve ever seen in a movie.
In other words, this week’s question is: What’s your favorite “food movie?”

There are times when I return to Ang Lee’s “Eat Drink, Man Woman” just for the opening sequence, featuring a calvacade of delicious food being prepared by the Chu patriarch. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
Last weekend saw the release of “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” a movie that at least one critic maintains is salvaged by the introduction of a brilliant new droid. On that note, what — or who? — is the greatest of all movie robots?
Charles Bramesco (@intothecrevasse), Freelance for The Guardian, Vulture, The New York Times
The only reasonable answer is Robby the Robot from “Forbidden Planet.” A trailblazer for android-kind, he was the first instance of a bag of bolts that actually had personality, charm, a sense of fully-formed character. In the sublime B-movie take on “The Tempest” that gave him his debut (he’d go on to appear as a sort of all-purpose robot in later imitators), Robby functions as a Caliban-type figure, both engrossed by and distrustful of his own Cartesian awareness.

The Cannes Film Festival wrapped its 71st edition on Saturday with the Palme d’Or ceremony, awarding the top prize to Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Shoplifters.” Other movies recognized by Cate Blanchett’s jury included Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” (Grand Prix) and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War” (Best Director). While these movies were all well-received by the media covering the festival, one major film in competition went home empty-handed — and now, it has topped IndieWire’s critics survey of the best films of the festival.
“Burning,” Korean director Lee Chang-dong’s first feature in eight years, took first place for best film in IndieWire’s annual poll. The drama, an adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s short story “Barn Burning,” focuses on the mysterious experiences of a working class man (Ah-in Yoo) who obsesses over a seductive woman (Jeon Jong Seo) while resenting the confidant man (Steven Yeung) she spends her time around.

The 2018 Sundance Film Festival wasn’t a big marketplace compared to previous editions, but critics found plenty of cinematic highlights to celebrate in this year’s lineup, regardless of how much interest they attracted from hungry buyers. IndieWire invited dozens of critics attending the festival to vote on their favorite films of the lineup, and the movie that received the most support won no awards and didn’t even land distribution before the end of the festival, but stood out as one of the most widely praised selections anyway.
