The horror film Skinamarink has a creepy, retro-style trailer (you can watch it in the embed above) that is apparently a more accurate representation of the film’s style than you might expect. According to Variety, Skinamarink “blends atmospheric horror with a production quality that recalls a mix of creepy online found footage and David Lynch’s lo-fi experimental work.” Thanks to IFC Midnight, genre fans will get the chance to watch Skinamarink on the big screen when it receives a theatrical release on January 13th. The movie will then reach the Shudder streaming service sometime later in 2023.
Writer/director Kyle Edward Ball had this to say about the distribution deal: “I’m thrilled that after months of keeping it secret, I can finally tell everyone that my weird movie is going to be in theaters and on Shudder.“

In the upcoming Mental Health and Horror: A Documentary, writer/director Jonathan Barkan and producer Andrew Hawkins look to explore the positive impact horror movies can have on our mental health. The project looks to be a very exciting opportunity to demystify the genre’s appeal for people who don’t consider themselves horror fans while also providing validation for those who may feel weird about finding comfort in these types of films.
I had an opportunity to chat with Hawkins about the documentary, and we took some time to discuss its origins and goals, the crew’s approach to interviewing subjects, and even some of Hawkins’ own relationship with horror and mental health. (Disclosure: Daily Dead’s Editor-in-Chief Jonathan James is credited in this project as an associate producer.)
Where did the idea to do a documentary on mental health come from?
I have to give all the credit for that to Jonathan Barkan.

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals has announced its 2020 Jury and Special Award winners for this year’s film festival, despite it having been cancelled due to the spread of the coronavirus earlier this month.
The SXSW Film Festival had several Special Awards juries set up, but after the cancellation, the organization expanded to the juried competitions.
“When we curated and announced our slate for the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, filled with an array of wonderful films we were excited to share with our unique audience, we had no idea of the unprecedented impact that Coronavirus would have on all our lives,” Janet Pierson, Director of Film, said. “Our hearts were broken for all the filmmakers who invested so much time and talent in their work, hoping for a transformative experience at our event. We’re honored to at least be able to present our juried and special awards.

Nicolas Cage stars in Color Out of Space, adapting H.P. Lovecraft’s story about a mysterious meteor’s effect on a small town.
Color Out of Space may be one of many when it comes to star Nicolas Cage’s current spate of debt-decreasing payday pictures, but this one arrives with the unique context of being a wantonly wild adaptation of a story by legendary horror author H.P. Lovecraft.
This prospective new source of “Cage Rage” memes has the iconic headliner playing a family man whose farm estate existence becomes incredibly inconvenienced when a meteorite lands on his front yard; an event that becomes the catalyst for an outbreak of a mutant virus that runs roughshod across his Massachusetts small town, jeopardizing his family and neighbors.
