From Errol Flynn to Disney, cinema has long been fascinated with the legend of Robin Hood. In 1991 he was played by box office superstar Kevin Costner, in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, who transformed the famous outlaw of Sherwood Forest into a movie icon fit for the 1990s. This grand, swashbuckling adventure in the classic tradition was a huge hit, suggesting audiences will never tire of the tale. To celebrate the release of the film in an all-new Uhd 4K restoration, here’s a look at the various actors who set audiences a quiver playing the beloved folklore hero through the decades.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
For many Errol Flynn was the quintessential Robin Hood – a dashing, devilish rogue. In this lavish Hollywood classic, he starred alongside Olivia de Havilland as Maid Marian, Basil Rathbone as Sir Guy of Gisbourne, and Melville Cooper as the High Sheriff of Nottingham,...

Chivalry! Vows of loyalty and honor! Combat action that will impress today’s Marvel fans! The violet eyes and super-damsel figure of Elizabeth Taylor! MGM’s made-in-Merrie Olde England tale of Knights and knaves and forbidden love is yet another suits-of-armor sword-basher about ransoming King Richard from those European Union swine across the channel. Everything clicks, from Miklos Rozsa’s most stirring anthem to the righteous justice of the finale. And it’s restored from 3-strip Technicolor. Robert Taylor is terrific as the stalwart Ivanhoe, the kind of no-funny-business hero they ain’t makin’ anymore.

Camila Cabello’s Cinderella is the most ridiculous movie of 2021, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Entering this movie, with its cast of triple (or at least double) threats, it can be easy to let assumptions get the best of you. Cabello is an extremely talented singer, so you can assume there’s going to be some tunes. Billy Porter is fabulous, so you can assume he will continue to be so as this adaptation’s incarnation of the fairy godparent. Idina Menzel, who plays the tale’s stepmother, is a goddess amongst us all, so you can assume she will continue to wow the world over. Wrap that up in a classic tale of a parentless child who lives with her stepmother and stepsisters, and you’ve got a story that has been told before, with some singing on the side. Yet, somehow, in no small part...

Richard Lewis will not appear in Season 11 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Variety has confirmed.
“For 20 years, I had the greatest comedy gig I could have ever imagined with my oldest and dearest friend Ld. Honestly, I’m crushed that I won’t be part of this season,” Lewis tells Variety. “For sure, I will be screaming with all the other ‘Curb’ fans when the new season starts. Hope to be there for Season 12!”
Lewis first shared the news on Twitter Monday alongside a photo of himself with series creator Larry David, writing that he has to take a break from his role on the show to recover from multiple surgeries.
“What a ride, Ld! I love you, buddy,” Lewis wrote. “Tragically, these past 18 months I’ve endured a back and two shoulder surgeries and not able to be in #CurbYourEnthusiasm for season 11. I’ll be watching… @HBO.”

Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1944/ 87 min.
Starring Maria Montez, Jon Hall
Cinematography by George Robinson
Directed by Arthur Lubin
Thanks to George Robinson’s Technicolor photography and Vera West’s kaleidoscopic costumes, death and destruction look pretty as a picture in 1944’s Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. Director Arthur Lubin’s action fantasy is no patch on the Fleischer brothers’ Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves but this Universal Pictures release is a cheerfully unassuming time-killer.
This Arabian Nights fable about a caliph’s son who grows up to lead a band of robbers contains a few nuggets of actual history; the movie’s bloodthirsty villain, Hulagu Khan, was indeed the grandson of the infamous Genghis. Hulagu was a thug who didn’t fall far from the tree; he conquered Baghdad and then decimated it, sending the then storybook city into a spiral.

Just like every other animated film in Disney's catalogue, it seems that Robin Hood is destined to receive a live-action remake. The 1973 original followed the adventures of Robin Hood, Little John, and the inhabitants of Nottingham as they fought against Prince John, with all the characters taking the form of anthropomorphic animals rather than humans. THR reports that Carlos Lopez…...

Carlos Lopez Estrada, best known for directing 2018 crime movie “Blindspotting,” has been tapped to direct a remake of Disney’s 1973 animated “Robin Hood” for Disney+, TheWrap has confirmed.
Kari Granlund, who wrote 2019’s “Lady and the Tramp,” will write the screenplay. Disney closed deals for the remake prior to the shutdown brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. A release date for the remake is unknown at this time.
“Dumbo” and “Tron Legacy” producer Justin Springer is producing for the streamer.

The original 1973 animated “Robin Hood” re-imagined every character as an animal — Robin Hood and Maid Marian were foxes, Little John was a bear, Friar Tuck was a badger, Prince John was a lion, and the sheriff of Nottingham was a wolf. One of the songs from the musical-comedy, “Love,” was nominated for an Oscar.

Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly, what a day! Fans of the animated Robin Hood are going to be singing that joyous song all day once they hear this news: according to our sources – the same ones who told us that an Aladdin sequel is happening, a Ms. Marvel TV show was in the works and that a She-Hulk TV series was coming to Disney Plus, all of which have since been confirmed, so we have no reason to doubt them – Disney is currently in the early stages of developing a live-action reboot (similar to the style of the recent Lion King) of their 1973 classic.
The original film followed the adventures of Robin Hood and Little John as they teamed up with the inhabitants of Nottingham to fight the oppressive taxation from the hostile Prince John. Unlike other features that revolve around the iconic hero, though, Disney’s flick used anthropomorphic animals to portray the legendary characters.

Fans of Disney Villainous were recently treated to a tease of what to expect from the next expansion. There were a couple of guesses and debates as to who the new three new villains would be, however, the most common guesses were Scar from The Lion King, Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove, and Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective. I’m happy to announce that these guesses are all correct.
This August, fans will be able to pick up these three new characters in Disney Villainous: Evil Comes Prepared, but that’s not all. In addition to the latest expansion, Ravensburger will be releasing six 1000-piece puzzles featuring artwork from the game. There will be six puzzles at the start with a puzzle for each of the villains from the core game: Captain Hook, Jafar, Maleficent, Prince John, Queen of Hearts, and Ursula. As an added bonus to cool artwork in puzzle form,...

Exclusive: Netflix is in preliminary talks with American Cinematheque to buy the venerable Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. This will become the first brick and mortar movie theater acquisition for Netflix. But sources said it would be wrong to eye this as the start of a move into the operational theater business.
This is a deal that sources place in the many tens of millions of dollars, and it will put Netflix in good standing with the Hollywood cinephile community as the disruptive streaming company helps to preserve one of Hollywood’s landmark movie theaters and its long tradition. It is also putting the non-profit American Cinematheque on firmer financial footing in the process.
Built by Sid Grauman in the early 1920s, the pharoah-themed theater hosted Hollywood’s very first movie premiere in 1922. That was Robin Hood, the Allan Dwan-directed silent film that starred Douglas Fairbanks as the title character,...

As Tim Burton's Dumbo flies into cinemas, we pitch even more live-action remakes of Disney animated classics...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Starting with Tim Burton's 2010 re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland and continuing this month with the same director making Dumbo, Disney's live-action feature division essentially has a license to print money. In theory, all they really have to do is keep making live-action remakes of their already famous animated classics.
Where films like Alice and Maleficent have given a revisionist makeover to these cherished animated features, more recent films have leaned more heavily on the iconography and, crucially, the memorable songbooks of the originals. Still, nostalgia pays, to the tune of almost $5 billion at the global box office to date.
We still get outliers in the form of the majestic Pete's Dragon and the slightly odder Christopher Robin, but you can chart...

The Adventures of Robin Hood went through a director-swapping production yet is still the only Robin Hood movie that matters.
In retrospect, it’s easy to see the formula that Warner Bros. pursued to make The Adventures of Robin Hood, the 1938 sweeping Technicolor classic. Conceived as a star vehicle for one of their biggest icons, as well as a picture that would be the chance for a reliable contract director to become a preeminent name in Hollywood, it should’ve been impossible for the project to run into any trouble. Yet it did since the movie was originally pitched as a Jimmy Cagney movie and was later assigned to director William Keighley, a terrific studio man from the golden age… but one who is no more Michael Curtiz than Cagney is Errol Flynn.
Eighty years later and it’s largely been forgotten that the most beloved and...
