Will Geer was born William Aughe Ghere in Frankfort, Indiana, to Katherine (Aughe), a teacher, and Roy Aaron Ghere, a postal worker. Will admired his grandfather, a man who said hello to trees by their Latin names and who had used what he brought back to Indiana from the California gold rush to build Frankfort's first opera house. Will pursued a college major in botany, from Chicago through a Master's degree at Columbia, but ultimately gave in to his need to perform. Starting with touring company tent shows and river boats, his six-decade career included Broadway, movies, television; many Shakespeare roles; one-man performances as Walt Whitman and Mark Twain. His best known role was his last, Zebulon Walton, grandpa in the long-running television series The Waltons (1972). Less well-known was his life-long role as a political agitator and radical ("Someone who goes to the roots, which is the Latin derivation of radical") and folklorist/folksinger - he toured U.S. government work camps in the 1930s, singing with Woody Guthrie and Burl Ives. He was blacklisted during the McCarthy era for refusing to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. In 1951, he formed the "Theatricum Botanicum," a repertory theater in Topanga Canyon, California, where he not only coached actors but also encouraged outdoor philosophical discussion and, of course, folksinging. At his deathbed, his family sang "This Land Is Your Land" and recited Robert Frost poems. His ashes lie in a corner of the Shakespearean garden on the grounds of his Theatricum Botanicum.- Actor

It was the first play I was in, in my life...I've been acting ever since."- Actor

For more than three decades Hollywood defaulted to a small core group of actors when it came to casting convincing mobsters, gamblers and racketeers. These often typecast individuals included Joseph Ruskin, Bruce Gordon, Neville Brand, Robert Loggia and...Anthony Caruso. Square-jawed, broad-shouldered and gravelly-voiced, Caruso provided a reliable source of menace and was amply utilised in films and in countless television episodes beginning in 1941.
The son of Italian-American parents, Caruso decided to forgo a career as an opera singer and instead took up acting with a stock company in Long Beach, California. A year later, in 1935, he joined the Pasadena Playhouse. He began in films as a bit player, commenting later that "MGM was the place to be, offering us extras a higher quality of lunch". In his first film, Johnny Apollo (1940), he played a henchman named Joe and there were to be many more of these to come with names like Fingers, Dapper Dan Greco, Chips Malloy, Pinky Luiz and Lucky Grillo. These dastardly nemeses came in a variety of ethnic types, ranging from Italians, Mexicans and Latinos to Greeks and Russians. A close personal friend of the actor Alan Ladd, Caruso featured in eleven of the star's films (the first as a hitman in Lucky Jordan (1942) ). In 1954, he became a member of Ladd's newly formed stock company, Jaguar Films. Whenever Caruso was not gleefully portraying underworld figures (The Iron Mistress (1952) , Hell on Frisco Bay (1955), The Asphalt Jungle (1950)) he was effectively employed as Native American chiefs (Drum Beat (1954), Cattle Queen of Montana (1954), The Lawless Eighties (1957)). On television, he had a popular recurring role as the charming but lethal Comanchero El Lobo on The High Chaparral (1967). Even on a planet (far, far away) in the Star Trek (1966) universe, Caruso -- as crime boss Bela Oxmyx -- was up to his old tricks using James T. & company to eliminate a rival gang and assume control of the government.
In stark contrast to his screen image, Caruso was the consummate family man in private life, happily married for 63 years, and enjoying the simple pleasures of gardening and cooking.- Director

According to the WWF's Spotlight magazine, Elizabeth enjoyed walks through the meadows and horses during her childhood. She earned a degree in communications from the University of Kentucky. She rose to national prominence in the fall of 1985 when she was introduced as the manager of WWF wrestler Randy "Macho Man" Savage (Randy Savage, whom she had married a year earlier). The two quickly became successful: Elizabeth guided Savage to the WWF's Intercontinental title in Boston on Feb. 8, 1986, and later the WWF World Title on March 27, 1988, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Merchandise and magazines bearing her picture were big sellers. She also figured as a key part of several angles, or story lines, in Savage's feuds with WWF foes George 'The Animal' Steele, Wayne Farris (aka "The Honky Tonk Man"), Jake Roberts, Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan. Elizabeth later served as Hogan's manager, which touched off one of the WWF's fiercest feuds of 1989. Miss Elizabeth was never a "Diva" like the other women in WWE today. She was and will always remain the First Lady of Wrestling.
Elizabeth and Randy Savage were part of the "Match Made in Heaven" portion of the WWF's Summerslam '91 on August 26, 1991. Alas, the marriage was a work (i.e., fake), as the two were already married; the "wedding" was used to help set up Savage's feud with Roberts. In reality, the marriage (both the real and storyline marriage) wouldn't last; Elizabeth left the WWF in 1992, shortly before she and Savage divorced.
She returned to wrestling in 1996 in the rival World Championship Wrestling (WCW), where she served as manager for Hogan and Lex Luger (Larry Pfohl, who soon became her real-life boyfriend) while also working with ex-husband Savage on occasion. She left the WCW in early 1999. She later owned a clothing store in the Miami, Florida, area. She died on May 1, 2003, leaving behind many fond memories with her fans. - James O'Rear was born on 4 January 1914 in Frankfort, Indiana, USA. Little is known about Theresa "Tressie" Souders, who in 1922, became the first known African-American female director, when the Afro-American Film Exhibitors Company of Baltimore and Dallas, Texas, contracted with her to distribute her film "A Woman's Error." Billboard Magazine for January 28, 1922 (34:107) published the company's announcement that "'A Woman's Error' was the first of its kind to be produced by a young woman of our race, and has been passed on by the critics as a picture true to Negro life." It appears that Ms. Souders left Kansas City, Missouri for Los Angeles; the 1930 census finds her (as "Tressa" Souders) living at the Sojourner Truth Industrial Home at 1119 East Adams Avenue; her occupation was "Servant, Private Home." She may have gone to Los Angeles as an attempt to get into the motion picture business; however, as far as it is known, she spent most of the rest of her life as a domestic worker. Voting records have her at the East Adams address until 1935, when she married Oscar Carnelus West, a native of Richmond, Va., who ran a pool hall in the Watts section of the city of Los Angeles. There were no children of the marriage, which was short-lived. By 1940, Tressa West was in San Francisco, where she would stay the rest of her life, other than periodic visits south to Los Angeles. She died in San Francisco in her ninety-fifth year, and is buried in Frankfort Cemetery in Marshall County, Kansas.- Terrance Ray was born on 28 July 1907 in West Frankfort, Illinois, USA.
