- Joachim Hansen was the 'poster boy' for German movie officers in films of the 1950's and 60's. Masculine and of commanding presence, he portrayed such historical figures as Luftwaffe ace Hans Joachim Marseille in Der Stern von Afrika (1957) and Generaloberst Alfred Jodl in The Winds of War (1983) and War and Remembrance (1988). His many international credits as men in uniform include Captain Baumann in The Bridge at Remagen (1969), a British lieutenant caught up in a sectarian uprising in India in Kali Yug, la dea della vendetta (1963) and a senior SS officer in The Eagle Has Landed (1976).
A teacher's son, Hansen began his working career as an English and French translator. He studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Academy in Berlin and was spotted there by the director Alfred Weidenmann who starred him in his 1956 film debut. Thereafter, he rarely found himself out of uniform, but remained firmly in command just the same, as police inspectors (Das Geheimnis der schwarzen Koffer (1962)), men of impeccable integrity (Via Mala (1961)) or outdoorsy heroes in romantic melodramas (Duel with Death (1959)). Hansen segued into character roles on the small screen during the 1970's and 80's. He emigrated to Canada in 1986, but returned to Germany for occasional theatrical appearances. He died in Berlin after suffering a stroke in September 2007, aged 77. - Claudia Hiersche was born on 22 February 1977 in Frankfurt an der Oder, German Democratic Republic. She is an actress, known for Bettys Diagnose (2015), Verbotene Liebe (1995) and Verbotene Liebe - Next Generation (2020).
- Heinrich von Kleist was born on the 18th of October, 1777 in Frankfurt/Oder (Germany) as the son of a priest. His father died when Heinrich was 11 so he had to earn some money early. He managed to go to the High School until 15, but was forced then to join the Prussian army in their war in the west. He climbed up the ranks until he was lieutenant, but quit then in 1799 and studied philosophy, physics, mathematics and political sciences in the town where he was born. After stays at Weimar (where Kleist met Wieland, Goethe and Schiller, other famous writers of his time), he finally entered the Prussian state as a secretary. His writings were no success at all, political life was not satisfying, and his girlfriend was ill, going to die- after all, he decided to go with her. They both met their death together, using a gun on the 21st of November, 1811 (Kleist was, as you can see, only 34). It is rather difficult to describe Kleist's role in German literature. He wrote immortal pieces of literature, such as "Prinz Friedrich von Homburg". But especially this stage play, for which he is best known, was often used as a nationalist piece of propaganda. Kleist does not belong to any literary epoch at all, but stays between the Romantik, the Klassik and the upcoming Realismus. Often underrated, Kleist was a walker between the lines. Seen in this context, his death is nothing but consequent.
