British producer/director Michael Relph, the son of stage actor George Relph, graduated from Bembridge School and became apprenticed to Alfred Junge at Gaumont Pictures in 1932. He was also a stage designer and art director, often working for Michael Balcon. In 1942 he became the chief art director at Ealing Studios, and in 1946 became a producer and screenwriter. He began a productive partnership with director Basil Dearden at the studio, and the relationship continued after Ealing went out of business. He directed such pictures as Davy (1957), Mad Little Island (1958), but eventually gave up directing to concentrate solely on producing.
