- James Fulton Hoge Jr. was born in 1935. He's the second of four siblings born to parents James F. Hoge Sr. and Virginia McClamroch Hoge. Following graduation from Yale University in 1958, Hoge began his career as a journalist as a Washington correspondent for The Chicago Sun-Times. James went on to serve as editor in chief and publisher for this particular newspaper. However, Hoge left The Chicago Sun-Times in 1984 and was appointed president and publisher of The New York Daily News. During his stint at The Chicago Sun-Times the paper won six Pulitzer Prizes while the Daily News won one Pulitzer while he was president. James was awarded a fellowship at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1991. He was appointed editor of the top bimonthly publication Foreign Affairs the following year and retained his position as editor until 2010 when he was succeeded by Gideon Rose. An acknowledged expert on US foreign policy and international economic policy, James has written articles for such notable publications as The New Republic, Nieman Reports, The New York Sun, and The Washington Post. Moreover, Hoge has served as the Chairman of the Board of the international non-government organization Human Rights Watch as well as chairman of the non-profit organization the International Center for Journalists and the Peter G. Peterson Chair at the Council on Foreign Relations. He's the older brother of journalist Warren Hoge, who like his sibling attended Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire.
