Convicted and executed (by electric chair) for the death of Judge Roger Shaw (Joe King), innocent musician John Ellman (Boris Karloff) is resuscitated by Dr Evan Beaumont (Edmund Gwenn). Now seemingly possessed with the supernatural knowledge of just who framed him, Ellman sets out to confront each of those responsible.
The Walking Dead is based on a screenplay written collectively by Robert Adams, Lillie Hayward, Peter Milne, Joseph Fields, and Ewart Adamson.
Ellman kills no one. Judge Shaw was killed by Nolan (Ricardo Cortez) and his lackeys. Trigger Smith (Joe Sawyer) trips over a chair and shoots himself. Blackstone (Paul Harvey) is hit by a train. Merritt (Robert Strange) suffers a heart attack and falls out a window. Nolan and Loder (Barton MacLane) are electrocuted when their car runs off the road and hits a utility pole.
It's a piece by Russian-Jewish composer, pianist, and conductor Anton Rubenstein [1829-1894] from a work entitled 'Kammenoi Ostrow' or 'Kamminy-ostrov'. The portion being played in the movie is XXII Andante.
Nancy (Marguerite Churchill) follows Ellman to the cemetery, and Loder and Nolan follow Nancy. When Ellman refuses ('I belong here') to go back to the hospital with her, Nancy goes off to find a phone so she can call Dr Beaumont. She returns to find Loder and Nolan firing several shots into Ellman. She calls Beaumont again to tell him that Ellman is dying, and Beaumont, Jimmy (Warren Hull), and District Attorney Werner (Henry O'Neill) hurry to the cemetery. As Ellman lays dying, Beaumont tries to get him to remember what he learned when he was dead and how he knew it was Nolan and his lackeys who framed him, but Ellman only says, 'Leave the dead to their Maker. The Lord our God is a jealous God.' He then adds, 'After the shock, I seemed to feel peace and...,' and he dies. While hurrying to get away from the cemetery, Loder and Nolan drive off the road, hit a utility pole, and are electrocuted when the wires fall on them. In the final scene, Jimmy and Beaumont comfort a crying Nancy. Beaumont says, 'It will never be known,' and repeats Ellman's words, 'The Lord our God IS a jealous God.'
