Above: Mulan (2020)It may seem there’s no bone left to pick with Disney’s live action Mulan weeks after its release. That is, what could I possibly say that would be worthy of press after the movie had been under fire for, among other things, putting a special thanks to a local government operating concentration camps in the credits. That one is, admittedly, hard to beat. To justify the massive oversharing in a review of a Disney film for something as highbrow as Mubi's Notebook, you have to understand that my criticism for Mulan comes from a warm place deep inside my heart. So, I couldn’t just let it be. I had to join in on the group diss track, so that the circle of dissatisfaction can be complete in scale: world-view clashes next to the good ol’ "doesn’t live up to the original,” all the way to my culturally conditioned,...

June Foray, the voice of Rocky The Flying Squirrel, Granny from Looney Tunes, and literally hundreds of other beloved animated characters, has died. Heralded as “the first lady” and the “queen” of voice acting, Foray’s career in film and TV stretched for 71 years and more than 300 credits, embodying everyone from Magica De Spell to Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz. As reported by Variety, Foray was 99.
Originally working in radio—and on comedy albums with Stan Freberg—Foray broke into film in 1950, when she voiced Lucifer the cat in Disney’s Cinderella. From there, it would probably be easier to list the beloved animated series she didn’t appear on: Her versatile voice showed up in The Flintstones, Peter Pan, Mister Magoo, dozens of Looney Tunes shorts—with director Chuck Jones supposedly once noting that “June Foray is not the female Mel Blanc, Mel Blanc ...

A look at Disney’s live-action remakes to assess whether the music of the originals is still necessary.
As Disney celebrates opening their live-action take of Beauty and the Beast to the tune of $170m domestically, they are also preparing another re-imagining. It should come as no surprise that many of their properities are making the transition to live-action and Mulan is looking like the next movie to get a fresh treatment. The only problem is that Disney is considering releasing the movie without music.
“Yes, from what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.” Director of Mulan, Niki Caro.

One of the great things about The Simpsons is that you never know what you're going to get with the couch gag. You get something different with every episode, and sometimes the audience is met with a pleasant surprise that gives us something special. The latest couch gag for The Simpsons pays a wonderful tribute to the art of Disney Animation.
The couch gag was created by Eric Goldberg (Aladdin and Hercules), and it starts out with Maggie reimagined in the style of classic 1920 Mickey Mouse animation. It then goes to Lisa, who magically transforms into Cinderella. Then there's Marge, who comes in as Snow White and is cleaning up the mess of her family. My favorite part is Homer popping in as Baloo from The Jungle Book and eating his favorite junk foods. Bart perfectly ends the segment as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

The icon-establishing performances Marilyn Monroe gave in Howard Hawks’ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) and in Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (1959) are ones for the ages, touchstone works that endure because of the undeniable comic energy and desperation that sparked them from within even as the ravenous public became ever more enraptured by the surface of Monroe’s seductive image of beauty and glamour. Several generations now probably know her only from these films, or perhaps 1955’s The Seven-Year Itch, a more famous probably for the skirt-swirling pose it generated than anything in the movie itself, one of director Wilder’s sourest pictures, or her final completed film, The Misfits (1961), directed by John Huston, written by Arthur Miller and costarring Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift.

The Spiritual Prudence Sitting on a bench in the garden of my house I stared at the infinite blue sky over my head. Hawks flew over me so high that sometimes I barely could see them—discounting the fact that I need to change my glasses prescription. Sometimes I could see their wings; sometimes I could see nothing but a small black point in the blue sky. Massive white clouds appeared. They had no shadow for the sun hit them with its light frontally; because of that, they appeared infinite cotton balls, immaculately white, like they were drawn by a child. This prosaic and innocent sight remind me of the feelings that I experienced when I watched Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella. Many filmmakers have shot the sky and the clouds. Many filmmakers have shot birds such as hawks and eagles flying rapidly over the earth (and one of them was...

This modern retelling definitely looks like a 2015 blockbuster but it peddles some uncomfortably old-fashioned values
Disney traditionalists are sure to find comfort in Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Cinderella as it glides on to home video this week, because unlike the majority of recent efforts to revive the studio’s flagship fairytales, this new spin on the glass-slippered classic makes few concessions to contemporary life. Indeed, the film plays out almost exactly as Walt himself might have envisioned, eschewing the metatextual postmodernism of last year’s Sleeping Beauty reboot Maleficent and the general batshittery of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland.
Still, tradition has a short memory, so while the most influential version of the Cinderella story is probably the 1697 text by Charles Perrault, this new telling owes more to Disney’s own 1950 animated adaptation. Handily, this allows the studio to credit the story both to Perrault and “Disney’s Cinderella...

Since its release 60 years ago this week (on June 22, 1955), "Lady and the Tramp" has been not just one of the most beloved Disney animated features ever made, but also one of the great romances in screen history.
Still, as often as you've seen it, there's still plenty you may not know about how the canine classic came to be, So grab a plate of spaghetti and meatballs and chow down on 19 of "Lady"'s behind-the-scenes dish.
1. It took nearly 20 years to get the film made. The main character originated in sketches made by Disney animator Joe Grant in 1937, based on his own spaniel, whose name was Lady. Grant envisioned a short cartoon about a dog who's puzzled by the arrival of his masters' newborn baby.
2. By 1940, Walt Disney had imagined expanding the short into a feature and adding a dog-hating housesitter, two mischievous Siamese cats (then named Nip and Tuck), and a suitor for Lady,...

On the surface of it, Disney's decision to frontload their updated live-action Cinderella with a brand new Frozen short looks like a bad move. A large part of Frozen's appeal with critics (if not with kids) was its subversive treatment of familiar storybook tropes like "true love's kiss", where Princess Elsa's relationship with her estranged sister became the central focus and romance was an afterthought. Surely attaching Frozen Fever could only emphasise how creaky and regressive the Cinderella story now looks.
But of course, Cinderella has endured for a reason. Director Kenneth Branagh has a steady handle on both the wonder and the humanity of the story, which was originally set to be adapted by Never Let Me Go's Mark Romanek. Though an intriguing prospect, Romanek's...

But of course, Cinderella has endured for a reason. Director Kenneth Branagh has a steady handle on both the wonder and the humanity of the story, which was originally set to be adapted by Never Let Me Go's Mark Romanek. Though an intriguing prospect, Romanek's...

★★★☆☆ Courage and kindness (and perhaps a little magic for good measure) are the cornerstones of Kenneth Branagh's sweet retelling of Cinderella (2015), a benevolent yet paradoxically cravenness reimagining of Charles Perrault's classic fairytale. A live-action Disney production starring Cate Blanchett, Lily James and Richard Madden, its safe to assume there are no evil stepsisters getting their eyes pecked out by birds here, yet there does remain something rather vexing about the easily digestible perpetuation or archaic gender norms in this enjoyably blithe, yet problematic celebration of beauty and hetronormative behaviour. The iconic Disney ident seamlessly flows straight into Cinderella's storybook exposition.

We find ourselves in a time and place where the voice of feminism has never been louder. Issues like Gamer Gate, sexism in Cosplay, a woman’s right to an opinion on fantasy, comics, or horror, as well as a myriad of issues outside the realm of pop culture like slut shaming, and blame for being raped flood news outlets on a daily basis. As a result, there’s been a constant cry for change from men and women alike, internationally. We’re seeing stronger representations of women in cinema, and on television. 2013’s Frozen offered a very necessary shift to the Disney Princess dynamic, suggesting that one saves oneself, that love is genderless, and that the kind of love that saves need not strictly be romantic.
The tone of this shift is both liberating and necessarily stringent. It’s a dialogue that needs to happen in order to bring...

Director Kenneth Branagh's "Cinderella" is a delightfully un-ironic retelling of the classic Charles Perrault story with Lily James as the titular girl, Cate Blanchett as a Joan Crawford-inspired wicked stepmother, and Helena Bonham Carter as a woozy fairy godmother who bears more than a passing resemblance to Madeline Kahn. Prince Charming, meanwhile, has own interest arc of self-actualization that makes "Cinderella" a wiser version of the familiar tale. Richard Madden, who's best known for playing Robb Stark on "Game of Thrones," plays the sharply uniformed prince who sets out to find the mysterious girl who fled his magnificent gala at the stroke of midnight. We asked Madden about whether he got to keep the portrait of himself in the film, whether there's a downside to playing Prince Charming, and what he learned from observing Cate Blanchett on set. ...

USA, 2015
Cinderella is a refreshing callback to the unabashed costume epics of the past, when story and aesthetic held equal sway over ambitious filmmakers. Director Kenneth Branagh and his production team luxuriate in breathtaking sets, opulent costumes, and impeccable special effects while still keeping the old-fashioned story of courage and kindness at center stage. Yes, it would have been nice to see a little more cellulite and gumption from our heroine, but it’s hard to complain about a movie that so thoroughly delivers on spectacle and heart. Lush, extravagant, and painfully earnest, Disney’s Cinderella is a worthy adaptation of its classic predecessor. In fact, it’s quite wonderful.
The live-action adaptation of Cinderella doesn’t try to re-invent its cartoon cousin so much as give it a little tweak. Most of the musical numbers have been removed,...

On Friday, March 13, Disney will release the live action version of Cinderella from director Kenneth Branagh.
The original animated movie opened on February 15, 1950 to universal acclaim and 65 years later, Cinderella has become one of studio’s most treasured titles.
Branagh has once again turned to the Scottish composer Patrick Doyle for the score. The album features original music by Doyle marking the eleventh time he has teamed with Branagh.
In 1989, the director commissioned Doyle to compose the score for Henry V and they have subsequently collaborated on numerous pictures, including Dead Again, Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet, As You Like It and Thor, and most recently Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
Doyle scored Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes for 20th Century Fox and Brave for Disney Pixar, which was awarded Best Original Composition for Film at the International Music and Sound Awards.

Over the past half decade Walt Disney Studios has spent a great deal of time and money to create live action versions of some of their own animated classics. While these films have performed at the box office, creatively they were often lacking. The studio may have finally found its own fairy godmother in the form of director Kenneth Branagh and his new adaptation of “Cinderella.” The Oscar nominated filmmaker is best known for shepherding new versions of "Hamlet" and "Henry V" to the big screen. The former was released almost 20 years ago, but Branagh earned a reputation for bringing a modern sense of realism to Shakespeare's creations even if the stories were still set in the distant past. This talent made him a smart choice to direct the underrated "Thor" and an even better hire for a movie that could have been just another shell for Disney’s consumer product division.

We never get tired of the story of Cinderella, and whether we know it or not, the version we never get tired of is the one put forth by Walt Disney 65 years ago. The 1950 animated feature, released 65 years ago this week (on February 15, 1950) was an instant classic, and its this version we think of when we imagine all the visual details of the story -- the slipper, the pumpkin, the fairy godmother, the mice, and Cinderella and Prince Charming dancing all over the palace grounds.
Still, as many times as we've heard the story or seen the cartoon, there's still more to be mined from the 17th-century fairy tale. (Indeed, Disney is releasing a new live-action retelling next month.) As many times as you've seen the 1950 classic, there's plenty you may not know about it -- how the actress who played Cinderella landed the part without even knowing she'd auditioned,...

Songwriter Diane Warren earned her seventh Oscar nomination this year for “Grateful” from Beyond the Lights. The song, which will be performed by Rita Ora at the Oscar ceremony, is Warren’s first nomination in 13 years. With a Grammy and a Golden Globe under her belt, she has yet to win an Oscar and is one of two Oscar-nominated songwriters to have at least seven nominations and not a single win. The other songwriter is Mack David.
Warren received her first nomination in 1988 for the song “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” which she co-wrote with Albert Hammond, from the movie Mannequin. The song was a No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 Hit in 1987.
She next landed four consecutive nominations nine years later starting with 1997’s nomination of “Because You Loved Me” from Up, Close & Personal. Though the song didn’t win an Oscar, it did score a Grammy.

3Rd Update, Monday, 5:28 Pm: Most of the major studios have not reported their Monday actuals, as is customary due to the holidays. Warner Bros, Sony and Relativity are still off this week, which means Rentrak won’t issue a final report until January 5. What we do know, though, is that Disney’s Into The Woods beat Universal’s Unbroken by the hair of its chinny-chin-chin over the Christmas Week frame.
Some distribs marveled yesterday why Into The Woods, a PG film, didn’t beat Unbroken, which is largely adult-driven. Woods wound up posting a better Sunday thanks to matinees of $8.2M vs. Unbroken‘s $7.5M. Nonetheless, both films have driven a ton of biz to the year-end box office, with each exceeding $46M in their four-day openings. Rentrak currently sees the total weekend at $208.9M, still up 6% over last year’s comparable frame of $196.9M. The 2014 B.O. is at $10.22B,...

When Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty first arrived in theaters in 1959, reviews were mixed, in part because the conceit of a wicked sorceress putting a beautiful princess to sleep seemed like such a blatant Snow White rip-off. But over time, Sleeping Beauty has carved out its own space, no doubt because of its mesmerizing villain, the elegantly evil Maleficent—a fact brought to cinematic fruition this year with Angelina Jolie's live-action blockbuster. Maleficent wasn't a hag, like the in-disguise apple-offering witch in Snow White, nor a prim harpy, like Cinderella's stepmother. She was undoubtedly grotesque, with devilish horns, yellow eyes,...

Amir here, with this month’s edition of team top ten. As the art of acting and our interpretation of it evolve, definitions of what we consider a good performance change. It’s become an annual tradition to discuss whether a motion capture performance or some “alternative” form of acting deserves to be in the awards race. Last year’s topic of conversation was Scarlatt Johansson’s voice work in Her and that's the topic we’ve turned our attention to. (Thanks to Michael Cusumano for his suggestion!)
Voice acting has existed since cinema found sound and it has contributed to the medium in more memorable ways than a list of ten entries can represent. We were not limited in our option to animated films or any genre. So long as the voice performance was not accompanied by visual aids from the same performer (e.g. Andy Serkis’s work...

Why ask a magic mirror who the fairest is when you can just make a pass at every royal maiden in the land? That's the logic that propelled Blaine Gibson during a recent trip to Disney World. The Austin, Texas, man decided that typical tourist photos wouldn't cut it, so he skipped out to Walmart, bought a cheap ring, and tweeted photos of himself proposing to every Disney Princess he could find. The result? Some princess expressions of surprise, retweets aplenty and a little bit of Internet infamy. So I brought an engagement ring to Disney World and proposed to...
