Watch just about any media from the mid-20th century and you'll quickly notice something: people smoked a lot more onscreen back then -- like, a lot more. Those born in the current century would no doubt be shocked to learn that even beloved cartoon icons like Donald Duck would light up a pipe or puff away on a stogie when the occasion merited (and that's to say nothing of commercials like the jaw-dropping marketing campaign where Fred Flinstone gets his buddy Barney and his wife Wilma hooked on Winston cigarettes).
Smoking was a useful visual shorthand for a variety of things. When Cruella De Vil spewed a wreath of putrid yellow smoke from her infamous cigarette holder in Disney's animated "101 Dalmatians," you just knew she was trouble, even before dog-napping entered the equation. Alternatively, when Cary Grant carefully lit Eva Marie Saint's cigarette in perhaps the ultimate Alfred Hitchcock picture,...

Alfred Hitchcock is undoubtedly one of the most influential filmmakers that has ever lived and his films have made a mark on filmmakers today. He has an unusual yet affecting way of inducing suspense and intensity in his films and his works like Psycho, Rebecca, To Catch a Thief, Vertigo, North by Northwest, and The Birds are proof of that.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo is one of his most acclaimed films
The latter is one of Hitchcock’ most audacious films and actress Tippi Hedren was the lead of the film. The director is known for his rigorous process of bringing his vision to life and this proved to be an excruciating experience for Hedren as she got pecked at by real birds following a last-minute switch-up made by Hitchcock.

When David Boreanaz read for FBI agent Seeley Booth in the "Bones" pilot, he instantly thought of "Harry and the Hendersons." It's not hard to see why. The character's relationship with his then newfound partner, the forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel), readily evokes that between the open-hearted Bigfoot Harry and John Lithgow's uptight, disapproving patriarch George Henderson Jr. in William Dear's Oscar-winning 1987 fantasy comedy film. Much like Harry and George, however, Bones gradually opens up to Booth in spite of his shenanigans and even bids him a teary farewell when he rejoins his fellow federal investigators living in the wilderness.
Alright, alright, fine, Boreanaz actually thought of "Romancing the Stone." Even in the pilot, long before they became a romantic item, Booth and Bones' repartee recalled Robert Zemeckis' 1984 hit action-rom-com, itself a throwback to Golden Age Hollywood screwball comedy and action-adventure classics like "It Happened One Night" and "The African Queen,...

What would movies be about if not for love? Since well before the days of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca,” romance has driven countless classic stories, setting up some of the highest highs in cinematic history to follow. Be it Cary Grant and Grace Kelly seeing stars in “To Catch a Thief” or Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal disturbing diner patrons in “When Harry Met Sally,” the 20th century was chock full of iconic romances that helped humanity fall in love with the movies. Of course, those titles were dominated by white artists telling largely heteronormative tales — meaning many (but not all) of the best and most inclusive romances have arrived this millennium.
Now, the best romance movies of the 21st century both resonate and surprise, showing audiences characters they might recognize from their own lives in new and surprising ways. Yes, finding “the one” is exceedingly well-frequented thematic territory,...

The caper or heist film is one of the sub-genres of action that has a lot to offer thematically and stylistically if done correctly. If we think back to “To Catch a Thief” or even the “Oceans”-series, the world these stories show are a reflection of a society based on materialism and property, with the thieves sharing the same obsession as the owners of the object they want to steal. On the other hand, given its potential to be an ensemble piece, the caper/heist feature also offers actors the chance to shine. Steve Yuen's “The Moon Thieves”, the director's third feature, tries to combine the two aspects of the genre, but fails to offer some depth to its otherwise intriguing premise.

Alfred Hitchcock’s films have been some of the iconic films that have shaped the genre of suspense thrillers. He is known as the Master of Suspense, and his filmography as a director has been an inspirational one. Films such as To Catch a Thief, Vertigo, North by Northwest, and Psycho have been considered his best films.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is potentially the best suspense horror/thriller film
The latter is his most popular film featuring one of cinema’s most feared antagonists, Norman Bates, played by Anthony Perkins. The actor also managed to earn an Oscar nomination for the 1956 film Friendly Persuasion. However, he held one secret about his sexuality due to the regressive ideologies of the 50s.

He was born Archibald Alec Leach in South West England on January 18, 1904. As a teen, he became attracted to show biz at an early age, becoming friends with a troupe of acrobats and doing odd jobs while hanging out backstage at theaters. At 16, he would travel by ship to the United States, where he would eventually change his name to Cary Grant after signing his first movie contract in 1931. He became one of the most admired and beloved leading men that Hollywood would ever produce.
Grant’s suave looks and elegant voice served him well when he started acting in films, but his artistry and nuance on screen matured considerably over the years. He would work with the master Alfred Hitchcock several times, including “North by Northwest,” “Notorious” and “To Catch a Thief.” Grant was also quite deft with comedy roles, including “His Girl Friday,” “The Awful Truth,” “Arsenic and Old Lace...

You probably know the premise of "Bones." Set in Washington DC, forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) solve murders by studying the mortal remains of the victims. Or do they?
For the show's 200th episode, "The 200th in the 10th", the team decided to do something totally different (and non-canon). In this episode, the show moves to 1950s Los Angeles, where Brennan is an LAPD detective pursuing Booth, a jewel thief. At his latest robbery, Booth finds a burnt skeleton while safecracking and is immediately labeled as suspect No. 1 of the murder. Brennan, knowing it's not Booth's Mo, recruits her quarry to solve this new case together. Hey, after 10 seasons, a show has earned the right to swing for the fences!
"The 200th in the 10th" is made in the style of Old Hollywood thrillers, especially Alfred Hitchcock's 1950s technicolor noir films.

Alfred Hitchcock made a lot of movies in his storied career and there isn't a single one in his oeuvre quite like 1954's "To Catch a Thief". Released in 1954 and starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, "To Catch a Thief" tells the story of a retired jewel thief who is the subject of suspicion when a new string of robberies takes place in the French Riviera. He gave up that life after years in the French Resistance and a pardon on the other side of the war, and now he wants to catch the thief and clear his name because it takes a thief to catch one. (Welcome to The Movies That Made "Star Wars," a series where we explore the films and television properties that inspired George Lucas' iconic universe. In this edition: The classic jidaigeki film "Three Outlaw Samurai.")
As the first feature film from the legendary Japanese filmmaker Hideo Gosha, "Three Outlaw Samurai," holds a special place in the pantheon of Japanese films. It tells the story of three samurai who battle corruption and balance their honor and obedience to the system that produced them with doing what's actually right — something that feels almost radical in this style of filmmaking. The movie's stars — Tetsurô Tanba, Isamu Nagato, and Mikijirô Hira as the titular samurai — were reprising their roles from a television show with the same name that had started the year before. According to the essay by Bilge Eberi that accompanies the Criterion Collection's excellent Blu-ray transfer of the film, the original show seems lost to time.

The origin of one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars is a story stranger than fiction.
Cary Grant, who appeared in movies including “To Catch a Thief” opposite Grace Kelly, was born Archibald Leach in 1904 to an abusive father in the sleepy city of Bristol, England. While he was a child, Grant’s mother was secretly committed to a mental health hospital and publicly declared dead. The actor only found out she was still alive when he was 31 years old.
Grant is now the subject of “Archie,” a four-part biopic from “Philomena” writer Jeff Pope, made with the cooperation of his ex-wife Dyan Cannon and daughter Jennifer Grant. The series charts the actor’s rise to fame, his struggle with his demons and his relationships with the most important women in his life.

Oscar-winning actress Grace Kelly made just a handful of movies before transforming from a Hollywood princess into a real life one following her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Let’s take a look back in the photo gallery above of all 11 of her films, ranked worst to best.
Kelly got her start performing onstage and in television before being drafted by Hollywood to appear in Henry Hathaway‘s ripped-from-the-headlines nail-biter “Fourteen Hours” (1951) when she was just 22-years-old. The heist movie is a timeless popular classic. It always seems like the perfect, victimless crime. When we watch this type of movie, we are usually on the side of the gang of robbers and find ourselves rooting for them to get away with their audacious crime.

The movie: "Bringing Up Baby"
Where you can watch it: HBO Max
The pitch: David Huxley is a fussy paleontologist doing his best to handle increasingly strange situations, all caused by a beautiful and eccentric young heiress named Susan Vance. Starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn as the ridiculous romantic pair, it was sadly a commercial flop, in large part due to Hepburn being declared "box office poison" by the Independent Theater Owners of America only a short time before its release. The movie has thankfully earned a reappraisal in the years since, as Howard Hawks' madcap direction and Grant and Hepburn's incredible onscreen chemistry makes this one of the funniest romantic comedies ever made. It's also absolutely filthy, with more sneaky dirty jokes packed in than anyone can really catch on a single viewing.

Actress Gal Gadot ("Wonder Woman") will co-star in a remake of director Alfred Hitchcock's 1955 romantic mystery “To Catch a Thief", based on the 1952 novel by David Dodge, following a reformed criminal who tries to save his reputation by catching an impostor:
"...aging, former 'cat burglar' 'Le Chat (The Cat) Robie' is suspected by the police in a string of burglaries on the 'French Riviera'. When they come to his hilltop villa to question him, he slips their grasp and heads to a restaurant owned by his friend 'Bertani'.
"The restaurant's staff are members of Robie's old gang, who have been paroled for their work in the 'French Resistance' during 'World War II'. It’s been a big year for Prime Video. From The Boys season 3 to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to even the terrible games presented on Thursday Night Football, there were many hits to satisfy Jeff Bezos’ bottom line. How is the Amazon streamer planning on closing out 2022? Why, with another potential hit, of course!
Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for December 2022 is highlighted by the return of an old favorite. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3 premieres all eight episodes on Dec. 21. This time around John Krasinki’s CIA analyst will be dealing with a potentially nuclear conflict with Russia. The only other original TV series of note this month is Three Pines on Dec. 2. The mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.
Over on the movie side of things, Prime Video is bringing forward a major holiday tile on Dec.

Kimberly Guilfoyle was slammed for her black dress at Tiffany Trump’s wedding this weekend.
A photo of the Trump ensemble shows Tiffany at the center in a white Ellie Saab gown next too her mother Marla Maples in a light purple dress and stepmother Melania in peach. Ivanka is seen donning a pastel blue gown in an homage to Grace Kelly in To Catch A Thief, and sister-in-law Lara sported a silver, shimmering dress.
In the original photo, Guilfoyle appears on the end in a black dress with large puffed sleeves and black heels. However, Ivanka created some controversy when she posted the photo with Guilfoyle cropped out entirely.
Some said they didn’t blame Ivanka for the crop, citing that Guilfoyle’s dress was inappropriate for the occasion.

It’s time to get the hot cocoa boiling and the holiday decorations up! It’s almost December and nearly every streaming service has consumers covered with both seasonal content and new shows to carry them into the new year. Amazon’s Prime Video service has a few new series debuting, including “Riches.” Starring Deborah Ayorinde, from “Them,” the series is described as “a high-stakes family drama about the exploits of the stylish, privileged, and super-successful Richards siblings vying for control over the family business.”
The streamer also brings actor John Krasinski back into the world of Tom Clancy with the third season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” This installment finds CIA officer Jack Ryan wrongly accused of treason and on the run from his own government as he races against the clock to stop a global catastrophe. The season hits December 21.

Cary Grant was James Bond before James Bond. Sixty years since the release of Dr. No and Sean Connery’s era-defining performance as 007, it sounds crazy that Grant almost beat him to the role, but as late as 1962 it made perfect sense—including to the men who produced the James Bond movies. As the Hollywood leading man who perfected the Hollywood ideal of debonair sophistication and unflappable suaveness, Grant was a class act that couldn’t be beaten, and for the better part of 30 years all of Hollywood agreed.
This included one of the two godfathers of the James Bond franchise and Eon Productions, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli. Along with his partner Harry Saltzman, Broccoli saw the long-term viability of the James Bond character as a genre unto himself. Broccoli also wasn’t a delusional producer who just wanted to cast one of the biggest stars of his heyday as 007—he...

There's just something about Old Hollywood's leading men. Equal parts suave and brooding, it's easy to feel as though they could charm their way into anything (a feat no doubt influenced by film noir's popularity in '40s and '50s — and the genre's moody coolness). But while it may be tempting to brush off the allure as Hollywood glamour, Cary Grant nevertheless charmed his way into one of the most difficult places to reach: Alfred Hitchcock's heart.
It's no secret that Hitchcock was incredibly dismissive of his actors. Despite later dry jokes that he must have been misquoted, the director famously shared an analogy that compared actors to cattle. Putting comments aside, actions speak louder than words — and Hitchcock's behavior didn't always paint a pretty picture. Still, the director had quite the soft spot for Cary Grant, and even told producer George Barrie that "Knowing Cary is the...

Cary Grant and Grace Kelly were the two most iconic stars in old Hollywood, but they only co-starred in a single movie — Alfred Hitchcock's unforgettable 1955 mystery "To Catch a Thief." Unsurprisingly the film was instantly popular and has remained a classic, thanks largely to the charming performances from its two leads. It was one of Kelly's final films before she retired and started a family with Prince Rainier III of Monaco.
Grace Kelly famously lived up to her first name, having made an incredible impression not only on her audiences but on her fellow actors as well. Kelly starred opposite some of the most well-known leading men in old Hollywood, including Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart. Stewart, her romantic interest in Hitchcock's "Rear Window," always spoke highly of Kelly. "Everybody just sat around and waited for her to come in the morning, so we could just look at her,...

Despite his reputation as one of the greatest directors of all time, Alfred Hitchcock did not become a success overnight. It took many years for his career as a director to really take off, and in those years he went through a lot of tribulations that he would later take as lessons. One of the most important lessons of his early career was the importance of casting, and how vital it is to pick the perfect actor to carry your movie not only with star power, but with their acting ability. During his early career, Hitchcock would refer to his casting choices as "indifferent," which would lead to some of his early career flops such as "Rich and Strange," in his estimation.

Although Alfred Hitchcock once famously said that "actors should be treated like cattle," the director may have actually been searching for on-set sheep. In other words, an animal that would be just as easy to herd around, but nevertheless wouldn't get too worried or agitated. Though Hitchcock was quite demanding, he also make it a point to avoid conflict on set — and one of his strategies to maintain the peace especially resonated with Cary Grant, who starred in several of Hitchcock's films.
While speaking to Interview, Grant recalled that Hitchcock would always attempt to diffuse tensions on set by reminding crew members that at the end of the day, the work they were doing wasn't all that high-stakes:
"A film's a film. As Hitch would say when someone would get all upset on the set, 'Come on, fellas, relax—it's only a movie.'"

Here’s a film documentary that feels like a time-travel machine. But we’re not escaping into the past — the past is coming to us.
In “My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock,” film-besotted documentarian Mark Cousins hopscotches through the Master of Suspense’s body of work based on ideas and images, not your typical film-by-film chronological approach. He’s made hyperlinked connections throughout Hitchcock’s whole filmography (clips from almost every one of his films appear) to show that these works are not of the past: They remain eternally present tense.
To do that, Cousins presents us with a magnificent trick: making it seem as if Hitchcock is narrating the documentary and guiding you through his work and through the themes you might not otherwise notice. Impressionist Alistair McGowan portrays Hitch in the voiceover and has him down completely, from the sharp intake of breath to the almost-snort that precedes him...

Cary Grant's retirement was very likely one of the more disappointing developments of the '60s. At age 62, Grant might have been getting on in years, but he was still the same suave, debonair love interest in the eyes of the public — even if he could no longer embody that role in his later films. Still, the actor was beloved the world over, and he probably could have kept on acting without losing many fans. But for Grant, that was out of the question, especially after a particular experience in his youth set his mind to retire for good.
Never Meet Your Heroes
Though Grant stopped appearing in films after 1966, he'd continue to tour the country in auditorium performances he'd call "An Evening With Cary Grant." The performances were just that: casual, sit-down affairs where the actor would converse with fans and answer their burning questions. And naturally, Grant...

Alfred Hitchcock is behind several decades' worth of celebrated films, but some of the English director's best works were adaptations of stage plays. "Dial M For Murder" was one such adaptation, based on Frederick Knott's Broadway hit concerning an affair, a murder plot, and the trial that followed. Meticulously plotted and visually sparse, the thriller has one of the most satisfying endings of any of Hitchcock's films.
"Dial M For Murder" came to him from one of his previous players. "Notorious" star Cary Grant brought the project to the filmmaker with ambitions to play a hired killer, an appealing role after the suave menace he showed years earlier in Hitchcock's "Suspicion." At the time, Hitchcock was with Warner Bros., who paid thousands of British pounds for the film rights from filmmaker Alexander Korda (who had previously acquired the rights for much cheaper). After previously scrapping a feature adaptation...

Universal is drawing interest in acquiring “Cleopatra,” the historical epic that would star Gal Gadot and has Kari Skogland (“Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) attached to direct, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. However, no deals are in place.
The project was set at Paramount, but another individual with knowledge says this is no longer the case.
“Wonder Woman” filmmaker Patty Jenkins, who was originally attached to direct “Cleopatra,” is still serving as an executive producer alongside Charles Roven of Atlas Entertainment and Gadot, who is producing via her Pilot Wave Motion Pictures with partner Jason Varsano.
Laeta Kalogridis wrote the script and is executive producing the film about the Egyptian queen.

Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant each starred in four Alfred Hitchcock films. They worked with the director an equal number of times, with Stewart appearing in "Rope," "Rear Window," "The Man Who Knew Too Much," and "Vertigo," and Grant appearing in "They Are Suspicion," "Notorious," "To Catch a Thief," and "North by Northwest." Stewart's collaborations were spread out from 1948 to 1958, while Grant's encompassed almost all of two decades, from 1941 to 1959.

In the age of remakes, reboots, and revivals, nothing is sacred. Not even a classic Hitchcock film is safe from Hollywood’s greedy little paws. In fact, if it was already a beloved film, such as the 1955 feature, “To Catch a Thief,” why wouldn’t you take the bones of the film, modernize it for today’s audiences and throw an A-lister like Gal Gadot in there and hope for huge profits?

Great news, Gen Z! They’re remaking “To Catch a Thief.”
The Alfred Hitchcock classic first debuted in 1955. It boasted breathtaking Riviera views, as well as Cary Grant being all effortlessly charming and Grace Kelly at peak icy blondness. There was also something about a cat burglar lured out of a comfortable retirement after being framed for a crime he didn’t commit — yada, yada — along with cinema’s most sexually suggestive fireworks display.
The new version is in early development, but Gal Gadot, better known as Wonder Woman and recently seen on Netflix in the crime caper “Red Notice” opposite Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson, is attached to star. Gadot can next be seen as the Evil Queen in Disney’s live-action remake of “Snow White” and in the long-delayed adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Death on the Nile.”
