With prom season well underway, it's the perfect time for another round of /Film Showdown, the series where all-time great genre characters that would likely never meet otherwise are fantasy booked in a battle of might. As omicron begins to fade, and Americans shake off the coronavirus winter blues, advertisers are returning to the Super Bowl with big, bold campaigns. This year’s soundtrack veers from 2021’s tonal themes — muted, soulful or comforting — offering uplifting, and even humorous, usages.
For this weekend’s Super Bowl Lvi, some advertisers chose iconic songs for their instant recognition factor, or for their irony, or because the tune aligned well with the products they’re selling. But most music publishers agree that this year marked a return to normal in the space, with more upbeat songs requested by brands as the nation seeks to turn the page on a waning pandemic.
“Brands are back spending on music to enhance their commercials and pricing was very healthy this year — up from prior years,” says Brian Monaco, president and global chief marketing officer at Sony Music Publishing. “The majority of our licenses [this year] were for catalog,...

Exclusive: John Hesling, President of Maverick TV USA, is stepping down after four years at the Chrisley Knows Best producer.
Hesling joined the All3Media-owned company in 2017 and has been responsible for overseeing USA Network’s hit reality series Chrisley Knows Best, which recently wrapped up its ninth season, as well as multiple spinoffs including Growing Up Chrisley, which launched its third season last year.
He also scored a Netflix cooking competition series – American Barbecue Showdown – that has been renewed for a second season at the streamer.
It’s not clear what Hesling is going to do next, but he said that he is “excited” to try something new, adding that the industry is in “such a profound period of change” with distribution channels and creative possibilities that his “head is spinning with new ideas to take out to buyers”.
Simon Knight, Chief Executive of Maverick TV, will now oversee the U.

One of the best yet least seen of John Sturges’ westerns couples a fine screenplay with strong star perfs and superb direction: the straightforward story builds tension throughout. Kirk Douglas is a sheriff out for both justice and revenge and Anthony Quinn is the he-bull rancher who stands in his way: the guilty party is Quinn’s son. It looks sensational in VistaVision, with a fine music score by Dimitri Tiomkin — it’s a pleasure all the way through, with strong support from Carolyn (swoon) Jones, Earl Holliman, Brian Hutton and Brad Dexter.

October’s here and it’s time to get spooked. After last year’s superb “’70s Horror” lineup, the Criterion Channel commemorates October with a couple series: “Universal Horror,” which does what it says on the tin (with special notice to the Spanish-language Dracula), and “Home Invasion,” which runs the gamut from Romero to Oshima with Polanski and Haneke in the mix. Lest we disregard the programming of Cindy Sherman’s one feature, Office Killer, and Jennifer’s Body, whose lifespan has gone from gimmick to forgotten to Criterion Channel. And if you want to stretch ideas of genre just a hair, their “True Crime” selection gets at darker shades of human nature.
It’s not all chills and thrills, mind. October also boasts a Kirk Douglas repertoire, movies by Doris Wishman and Wayne Wang, plus Manoel de Oliveira’s rarely screened Porto of My Childhood. And Edgar Wright gets the “Adventures in Moviegoing” treatment,...

Philadelphia-based Breaking Glass Pictures (Bgp) has snagged North American rights to fantasy narrative drama “Nocturna: Side A – The Great Old Man’s Night” and its complementary docu-fiction hybrid, “Nocturna: Side B – Where Elephants Go to Die” from U.K. world sales agent Alief.
Breaking Glass plans a fourth quarter 2021 release for the “Nocturna” films.
As envisioned by Argentine writer-director Gonzalo Calzada, “Nocturna: Side A…” turns on a nearly 100-year-old man who struggles to atone for the transgressions he has committed in his life. In “Nocturna: Side B…,” Calzada explores an experimental version of the same story.

After presenting a list of hot TV series with the grim central trend of “we may survive” last year, the folks at The Wit identified “we are all survivors” as the main theme running through this year’s Fresh TV fiction selection.
Presented at MipTV by Wit CEO and co-founder Virginia Mouseler, the 2021 selection is headlined by Russell T. Davies’ Channel 4 drama “It’s a Sin,” which Mouseler described as “era defining.”
“It’s the series I found the most tragic, the most moving, the most stimulating this season. It’s a story of survival, but above all it’s a story of liberation,” Mouseler said.
The list is littered with serial killer and abduction dramas, with crime and cop shows in general making up around 70% of the selections.

Artists’ influences are never nearly as interesting as what they do with them. Chris Cornell always thrived at taking well-known songs and making them his own. One of Soundgarden’s earliest recordings was a rendition of Howlin’ Wolf’s steady-grooving, broken-hearted blues “Smokestack Lightnin’,” on which Cornell seemed to find his own anguish in the vocal, hollering, screeching, and howlin’ like he was on his own personal torture rack. And later, when he approached others’ tunes, the song itself wasn’t always the most apparent influence. He variously replaced the...

U.K.-based distribution company Alief has secured global sales and remake rights for “Nocturna,” sides A and B, from writer-director Gonzalo Calzada.
The British distributors have also shared with Variety an exclusive trailer from the film’s upcoming marketing campaign, set to kick off on Dec. 1 at the multi-city Ventana Sur market.
The “Nocturna” films are produced by Argentine genre specialists Coruya Cine and Calzada’s regular producers La Puerta Cinematografica.
At last year’s Blood Window genre showcase, one of Ventana Sur’s prominent sidebars, the Nocturna films were screened as works in progress. Both were finished shortly thereafter and scheduled for a 2020 release which was postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. A possible silver lining of the delay, the films were able to screen a preview at October’s B3 Biennale of the Moving Image in Frankfurt, building buzz ahead of their market premiere.

Xbox is giving gamers a small gift this weekend. Specifically, the platform is making three titles available to play for free, a price tag most people generally prefer. If you’re wondering, the games in question are Sea of Thieves, Hunt: Showdown, and Warhammer: Chaosbane.
It’s all part of the Free Play Days promotion, which gives folks occasional chances to check out new titles without any risk. They’re running this particular promotion until September 20th, so you have till then to feel them all out. And if you like what you feel, Xbox naturally offers a discount if you want to buy any of them afterwards. One catch, though: You’ll need a subscription to Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to take them up on this offer. Otherwise, it’s fair weather to start sailing.

Australian producer and distributor Beyond International has taken full control of 7Beyond, the LA-based producer that it ran as a joint venture with broadcaster Seven Network.
Beyond International has acquired Seven Network’s 50.98% stake in 7Beyond, which makes shows including HGTV’s My Lottery Dream Home and Food Network’s Holiday Gingerbread Showdown. Beyond and Seven Network first launched the venture in 2013.
Furthermore, Beyond has also fully acquired Seven Studios UK from Seven Network’s parent company Seven West Media. The British production outfit is currently adapting Pooch Perfect for BBC One, a British version of the Australian Seven Network dog grooming format fronted by Rebel Wilson.
The financials of both deals were not disclosed, but the acquisition of Seven Studios UK further cements Beyond’s presence in the British market after it bought distributor Tcb Media Rights in April.

The “adult” Western – as it would come to be called – was a long time coming. A Hollywood staple since the days of The Great Train Robbery (1903), the Western offered spectacle and action set against the uniquely American milieu of the Old West – a historical period which, at the dawn of the motion picture industry, was still fresh in the nation’s memory. What the genre rarely offered was dramatic substance.
Early Westerns often adopted the same traditions of the popular Wild West literature and dime novels of the 19th and early 20th centuries producing, as a consequence, highly romantic, almost purely mythic portraits the Old West. Through the early decades of the motion picture industry, the genre went through several creative cycles, alternately tilting from fanciful to realistic and back again.
