A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are revisiting the 1989 body horror sequel The Fly II (watch it Here). To find out what they had to say about this story of a boy becoming a fly – the latest in a long line of people becoming flies in this franchise – check out the video embedded above!
The Fly franchise began with a short story written by George Langelaan. That story served as a basis for a film that was released in 1958 and spawned two sequels: Return of the Fly (1959) and Curse of the Fly (1965). David Cronenberg’s 1986 remake of The Fly is one of the most popular remakes ever made, and it was soon followed by The Fly II. When you think of body horror, "The Fly" is easily a Top 10 contender among the most influential entries. Both the 1958 original and the '86 remake thrilled audiences in very different ways. While the original relied on costuming and admittedly shoddy (by today's standards) visual effects, the remake arrived in a decade famously known for its stomach-turning practical effects. Yet both managed to push the envelope on horror storytelling that often went over the edge, perhaps even taking things way too far.
The first film, directed by Kurt Neumann, was based upon a 1957 short story of the same name. It became a box office success and spawned two sequels, 1959's "Return of the Fly" and "Curse of the Fly" in 1965. Despite a rough road from idea to creation, director David Cronenberg's 1986 remake flipped everything about the original on its head. A sequel, simply titled "The Fly II," followed three years...

Vincent Price rose to fame in “The Fly,” “House on Haunted Hill,” “Witchfinder General,” “House of Wax,” and “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” but his filmography goes much deeper than horror movies.
A true renaissance man of the arts, Price earned a degree from Yale, where he studied English and art history. He worked as a lecturer before breaking into acting and landed his first leading role in the 1938 comedy, “Service de Luxe.” Price went on to appear in more than 100 films, including “The Ten Commandments” and “Laura and the Song of Bernadettes,” and had roles on TV shows from “Batman to “The Muppet Show Mystery.” He earned two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,...

The Fly remains one of sci-fi’s strangest and most iconic franchises.
The Fly -- the 1958 version or the 1986 remake, take your pick -- stands as one of the most memorable sci-fi/horror hybrids of its time. So it’s not surprising that Scream Factory recently released one of its now-standard deluxe boxed Blu-ray sets, containing all five films in the series and a truckload of special features, some ported over from the films’ separate DVD releases and others brand new.
What’s that, you say? All five films? Correct. For most people, the title The Fly brings up two iconic images: either David (Al) Hedison with a giant fly’s head on his shoulders or Jeff Goldblum in heavy prosthetics as he mutates into the monstrous amalgam known in the 1986 film as Brundlefly. Casual viewers may not be aware that the original film spawned two sequels,...

Lucio Fulci, the master of the soft-core thriller, is back with… wait, what? Let’s start over, shall we? Lucio Fulci, the Italian maestro of the viscerally dangerous and compellingly disgusting, dips his toe into—for me, that is—uncharted waters with The Devil’s Honey (1986), a melodramatically erotic piece resurrected by Severin Films for a packed Blu-ray release. This is not your dad’s Fulci. (Unless he had a special drawer…)

A new remake of The Fly has been has been on the verge of happening for years. It looks like Fox is finally ready to move forward with it, and they are looking to hire director J.D. Dillard to take on the job. Dillard made his directorial debut with the fantastic film Sleight. He would not only direct The Fly, but he would also write it with his writing partner Alex Theurer.
The first version of The Fly was released in 1958 and came from director Kurt Neumann. That film was based on a short story of the same name by George Langelaan. In 1986 David Cronenberg released his version of the story, which is the one most of you are probably familiar with. There have been multiple attempts to bring a new version of The Fly to the big screen over the years, but new reports suggest that J.D. Dillard is close to finalizing a deal with Fox. According to Variety, the Sleight director is in negotiations to direct a remake of The Fly and would be co-writing it with Alex Theurer.
The two co-wrote Sleight, which will be released later this month, and they've also teamed up on Sweetheart for Blumhouse Productions. While David Cronenberg's 1986 masterpiece is no stranger to modern horror fans, the original movie is impressive in its own right and worth your time if you haven't seen it. The 1958 film (based on the George Langelaan short story) also spawned two sequels: Return of the Fly and Curse of the Fly. Of course, we'll keep Daily Dead readers posted on any developments and I'll be very curious to see...

The Fly, the 1986 body-horror classic that is arguably David Cronenberg’s crowning achievement in the subgenre, is in line for the remake treatment with Sleight writer-director J.D. Dillard.
Per Deadline, Dillard has now officially opened talks with 20th Century Fox to shepherd the modern reimagining alongside long-time writing partner Alex Theurer. Fox is reportedly hoping that said reimagining will spawn something of a franchise revival, and it’s worth keeping in mind that George Langelaan’s original short story – the same one that inspired Kurt Neumann’s 1958 adaptation, and later Cronenberg’s horror masterclass – seeded the creation of two sequels: Return of the Fly and Curse of the Fly.
The story goes that a scientist hellbent on breaking new ground in teleportation accidentally transforms himself into a grotesque, vomit-spewing human-fly hybrid. Jeff Goldblum delivered a memorable performance as the bizarre Seth Brundle back in ’86, when Cronenberg’s stomach-churning feature went...

In our ongoing recap of last week's Ultimate Horror Poll -- in which over 100 genre experts helped determine the 100 greatest horror movies of all time by voting for their personal "ten best" -- the time has come to take stock of every honorable mention and clarification given by the survey's participants that weren't included in the original piece. To be clear, voters weren't asked for honorable mentions specifically; but a handful felt strongly enough about their "bubbling under" choices to list them anyway (which proved extraordinarily useful in helping break ties on the Top 100). See below for a full listing, as well as explanations from Bloody-Disgusting founder/editor-in-chief Brad Miska and director Corin Hardy ("The Hallow") on why they voted the way they did. With the death of horror film legend Christopher Lee, the last of the legendary honor guard of horror has passed on. He was part of an elite group that created the horror genre. Lee’s passing is a reminder that it’s been a long time since we had a new horror film superstar. Is the day of the horror film specialist gone forever? Where are the big-screen boogie-men for the 21st century?

The first Vincent Price collection from Scream Factory was a pure treasure. When October rolls around, almost nothing puts me in the Halloween mood like a constant stream of Vincent Price films on my TV. Never did I think that Scream could improve upon their original price collection, but when the films that would be included in this new set were announced, I was shocked. The first Vincent Price Collection has some really solid Price films, mostly of a Poe nature, and it was one of the most exciting releases of the year for fans of classic horror. The second set, drops the Poe theme(mostly), and includes some of Price’s most famous, well-regarded films, including a couple of my favorites. The list of films is impressive, and there are extras on most of the films. The packaging is consistent, and equally pleasing to the eyes. Scream Factory’s...

One of my favorite horror movies of all time, and required Halloween viewing at my house, is 1959’s House on Haunted Hill, directed by William Castle and starring the legendary Vincent Price. As far as content goes, they give me the type of films that I really want to see on the Blu-ray format. They’ve had a strong first couple of years, and I see no signs of them slowing down anytime soon. Two of the biggest… neigh, The two biggest releases of the 2014 Halloween Seasons is coming from these guys. Well, here is their entire fall(Sept/Oct… And some November, cause shut up.) lineup, in case a few have slipped by you.

The lone human fighting against an army of vampires, the wealthy host of a deadly party, a vengeful disfigured man who mourns the death of his wife through murder: screen legend Vincent Price has portrayed these and countless other memorable roles in the horror genre. Scream Factory’s Vincent Price set was a huge hit last year and, with many Vincent Price titles still not on Blu-ray, they recently announced that they’re putting together another collection and we now have the official release date and cover art.
Set for an October 21st release, Scream Factory’s The Vincent Price Collection II Blu-ray set features artwork by illustrator Joel Robinson that showcases the iconic actor depicted in a painting that looks like it could be hung on the walls of Frederick Loren’s mansion:

Bernard Glasser, a substitute teacher at Beverly Hills High School who went on to produce such films as the sci-fi classics Return of the Fly and The Day of the Triffids, died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 89. In 1950, Glasser borrowed money from his landlord, invested in the now-defunct Key West Studios lot in Hollywood and produced Gold Raiders (1951), a Western starring George O'Brien and the Three Stooges. The rarely seen film shot in five days and had a budget of $50,000. He also leased the facility to such producers as Burt Lancaster and Roger

James is off to never never-land, as he considers Metallica: Through The Never and the band's appearances in the movies...
A Metallica movie? Oh yeah? Say f*ck yeah, James! I'm there and I'm throwing up heavy metal horns and headbanging like a maniac. Unfortunately, trying to watch a film and simultaneously make moshpit movements is a tricky feat to pull off.
It raises a distressing dilemma: "to rock out or not to rock out?" It's a little like those moments where you're enjoying a musical and can't resist singing along, except with the Headbanger Hamlet question, there's little chance of you being able to follow what's happening on screen.
You can't properly appreciate, say, the cinematography and nuanced depth of the acting performances with blurred vision and flailing hair in your eyes. Also, as unfortunate possible side effects, you can end up...

An almost spectral-looking 2011 portrait by artist Rich Bernal of Vincent Price as he appeared in The Raven. Commissioned for the St. Louis Vincentennial.
2011 is the birthday centennial for Vincent Price, and the anniversary was celebrated by various magazines, blogs, film screenings and other events that honored the late actor. It was most memorably observed in Price’s hometown of St. Louis, where the Vincentennial was marked by a series of events organized primarily by Price fan Tom Stockman. Local newspaper reporter Raymond Castile and I attended many of the screenings, interviews, museum and gallery events in the more-than-month-long observance of the multifaceted man many think of as the “King of Horror.”
Raymond talked with a number of fans from around the world about their love of Price (including myself), and their encounters with him in life or on the screen. I later talked with a number of Vincent Price’s...
