The concept of the holiday movie began back in 1898 with G.A. Smith’s pioneering silent film Santa Claus. The first of its kind to show the depiction of Santa that only runs just shy over a minute.
Since then Hollywood has belted out an array of films that have either been true to the genre such as A Christmas Story; The Holiday; Miracle On 34th Street; Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey or films like Die Hard; Brazil, and Gremlins that have teetered on the edge of identifying as a holiday film.
Then there are the anti-holiday movies and the Christmas horrors. Subgenres of their own like the slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, and Christmas Evil, a John Waters favorite, so you are inclined to know what demented viewing you are in for.

Watch out, Santa Claus: Art the Clown is coming to town!
“Terrifier 3” is set to hit theaters across North America on Oct. 25, 2024, per an announcement from Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting. The Christmas-themed horror film, written and directed by franchise mastermind Damien Leone, will focus on the villainous, bloodthirsty Art the Clown, who “is set to unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.”
“’Terrifier 2’s remarkable success was driven not only by the insatiable appetite for new and thrilling horror icons like Art the Clown but also by its unparalleled theatrical release and marketing, along with its unyielding spirit,” Leone said in a statement. “In a cinematic landscape where risk-taking is scarce, I will continue to push boundaries in ‘Terrifier 3,’ and I can’t wait for you to see what’s in store for Art the Clown.

November 1st is a tough day for horror hounds. The decorations are still up, the air remains crisp, but the spirit has seemingly moved on, perhaps vanquished by the sun. Alamo Drafthouse says to hell with all of that and has announced two month’s worth of genre joy that’ll take you from Dia de los Muertos to Christmas Eve with minimal whiplash.
Terror Tuesday is a weekly slash-and-thrash through the world of horror, and they’ve booked a number of holiday-tinged forever classics mixed in with new canon-busting entries, many of which are screening from new, sparkling scans. Highlights include Lake Mungo, Tales from the Hood, The Changeling, and a pre-Thanksgiving feast with the Sawyers.
Weird Wednesday is similarly a weekly exploration of exploitation, pop oddities, and underloved gems. (Think of it as channel-surfing a transmission from a better dimension). And like Terror Tuesday, they’ve loaded it...

Understanding the controversial Final Fantasy 8 may require you to embrace a bizarre fan theory.
Do yourself a favor and never mention the “Squall is Dead” theory to a Final Fantasy VIII fan. Why? Because you might get dragged into a fandom hellscape where enthusiasts eternally torment you like a third-grader berating a second-grader for believing in Santa Claus, enthusiastically destroying a largely harmless illusion. Yet, more important than whether Final Fantasy VIII protagonist Squall is dead or not is how that theory helped keep the game alive enough though it took over 20 years for Square Enix release even a simple remaster of the experience.
So, what is the "Squall is Dead" theory?
Toward's the end of Final Fantasy VIII's first disc, protagonist Squall confronts the evil sorceress Edea atop a parade float. During the conflict, Edea shoots a giant magical ice shard at Squall. The ice shard...

Tis the season to be...well informed. We all love Christmas, but how much do any of us actually know about why Christmas is the way it is? Here are 31 facts about Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and Rudolph that you (probably) didn’t know. Smarten up! 1. Christmas supposedly marks the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. But there is no mention of December 25 in the Bible and most historians actually believe he was born in the spring. 2. December 25 was probably chosen because it coincided with the ancient pagan festival Saturnalia, which celebrated the agricultural god Saturn with partying, gambling, and gift-giving. 3. Many of the popular Christmas traditions today found their roots in Saturnalia: Branches from evergreen trees were used during winter solstice as a reminder of the green plants that would grow in spring when the sun gods grew strong. 4. These evergreen branches became the foundation of our Christmas tree. Germans are thought...

Viola Davis, John Goodman, Bryce Dallas Howard and more, in our rundown of 2016's underrated movie acting work.
This article contains minor spoilers for Pete's Dragon, Suicide Squad and Warcraft: The Beginning.
Nobody is likely to look back on 2016 fondly, whether because of global political instability, celebrity deaths or the rejection of Boaty McBoatface as a suitable name for a research vessel. In the world of film, we note that a lot of the contenders in this year's awards season haven't even been released in UK cinemas yet, and it was hardly a banner year for blockbuster cinema either.
On the plus side, there were some exemplary smaller films, of the kind that awards bodies tend to overlook, released in the last 12 months. Without any apparent genre contenders, like The Martian or Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, this is a year in which performers are more likely...

'Star Wars The Force Awakens': Andy Serkis channeling the Supreme Leader Snoke. 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' breaks Christmas record The 2015 Christmas movie of choice had nothing to do with Santa Claus, elves, reindeer, or Jesus. J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens smashed the domestic Christmas Day box office record on Friday, earning an estimated $49.34 million from 4,134 locations in the U.S. and Canada. The previous record-holder was Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, which grossed $24.6 million on Dec. 25, 2009 – not coincidentally, another Friday.[1] Next record to be broken Next in line – as in, next box office records to be shattered by Star Wars: The Force Awakens – are “fastest to reach $500 million at the domestic box office” and “fastest to reach $1 billion at the worldwide box office.” After grossing an estimated $160-180 million this Christmas weekend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens should pass both figures sometime on Sunday, Dec.

Rene Cardona's Santa Claus movie from 1959 is so utterly bizarre that it transcends Christmas.
When the conversation rolls around to bad Christmas movies, there’s of course a broad spectrum from which to choose, Santa Claus (1959) being one of them. Given that nearly every Christmas movie ever made is insufferable to some degree, it’s generally easier, I’ve found, to break things down into categories that stretch from the simply godawful (Jingle All the Way) to the agonizingly painful (A Very Brady Christmas or that Marlo Thomas remake of It’s a Wonderful Life) to the merely baffling (the continued string of Home Alone sequels and reboots).
Of course there are some people who think they can bring the conversation to an abrupt end by pulling out Santa Claus Conquers the Martians as the last word on holiday cinema. There’s simply nothing more to say.

A Most Gloriously And Victoriously Ferronian Christmas To All Of You!!!
Some might wonder: Does the Ferroni Brigade celebrate Christmas together? The answer is: No, as our families have the right to occasionally enjoy our respective presences—there are lives to the Ferroni Brigade beyond the first rows of this island earth's cinemas. But: If we would celebrate together, we'd probably do so by watching René Cardona's relentlessly mind-blowing Santa Claus (1959) while sipping a glass of L'Enclos from our winery of choice, Le Domaine des 2 ânes; after that and if we were in Cologne, we'd pay a visit to our god-donkeys Lisa, Hupsiand Pedro and enjoy their kind and calming company.
As a little Christmas special, we offer a few lists of ours which you haven't seen yet in their entirety: Our complete contributions to the Film Comment Decade Poll. Remember?: In its Jan/Feb 2010-edition, Film Comment featured a massive international Noughties-poll,...

Gaga humbug! This pop star has no warm spot in her heart for the holiday season.
At a concert at London's O2 arena Friday night, a Lady Gaga fan threw a Santa Claus doll up onto the stage while the star was performing. Instead of taking it and maybe making a wish for Christmas, Lady Gaga ripped a page out of Ozzie Osbourne's book -- and bit right into its neck.
"I do like Christmas, but for those of you feeling lonely this Christmas, just to keep everyone happy," she said, before biting into its merry neck.
"I hate the holidays. I'm alone and miserable you f**king stuffed little toy," the Grammy-winning singer yelled out as she finished the beheading with the heel of her shoe. No doubt she can expect coal in her stocking this year.
Perhaps something has changed for Lady Gaga in the past year --...

This holiday favorite from Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas takes Santa Claus to some dark places:
On Christmas Eve 1947, young Harry sees Mommy do more than just kiss Santa Claus; he's so shaken by the event that he smashes a Christmas snowglobe, cuts himself with the broken glass and bleeds on the snowy cabin inside. Cut to 33 years later: Grown-up Harry (Brandon Maggart) sleeps in Santa Claus pajamas, covers his wall with St. Nick paraphernalia, creates a fake "Santa" beard with shaving cream, and monitors the neighborhood kids for his "naughty" and "nice" lists.

On 'The Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35Pm on NBC), actress Emily Blunt revealed her secret fear of Santa Claus -- or "Father Christmas," as she called him in her charming English accent. But why? Doesn't everyone love Santa?
In turns out that Emily used to be frightened by any type of costume, including Santa's outfit. That's odd -- she's an actress, so her job is to wear costumes.
Still, that's Emily's fear, and she's sticking to it. And so, Jay Leno ran down a list of other things that frighten the actress. Apparently, Ms. Blunt was also terrified during a trip to Disney World (this was another costume-related thing). And her other big fear is ... circus clowns.

And here we have the second film this year -- after the Facebook-romance documentary Catfish -- for which explaining what the title refers to would be an unforgiveable spoiler. But there’s much to say about this wonderfully bizarre Finnish movie that won’t spoil it: it’s so deliciously weird, in fact, that it would be tough to convey how perfectly perverse it is. You simply need to see it to believe that anyone would conceive of such an outlandishly demented Christmas fantasy. Inspired by the notion from Finnish pagan folklore that the being we know as Santa Claus today was, in fact, a horrific scourge of a creature in times of old, this is the story of how Santa is unearthed at an archaeological dig at the Finnish-Russian border -- having been imprisoned in a subterranean ice prison by the medieval Finns weary of his monstrous ways --...

I still think Elvis Presley’s “Santa Claus is Back in Town” is hands down the sexiest Christmas song out there. But after searching iTunes for more bluesy holiday fare, my appreciation for the art of the holiday double entendre has increased. Have a listen to Amos Milburn’s “Let’s Make Christmas Merry, Baby” and Jimmy Butler’s “Trim Your Tree.” And before you judge me, experience the following lyrics:
• “Hang up your pretty stockings/ turn off your light/ Santa Claus is comin’ down your chimney tonight” — “Santa Claus is Back in Town”
• “I’ll come ’round about midnight...

So who would have expected that after releasing My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, an album many are calling the best of the year, Kanye West would come out with a Christmas song? For someone with a soon-to-be-released video featuring necrophilia and a roomful of murdered models, Kanye's given us something surprisingly cheerful in the middle of this holiday season. There's still a bunch of sexual innuendo — this is the man who managed to use Snakes On a Plane as a request for a blowjob. And it does raise the question: is Santa Claus secretly a Crip? But still, yay Christmas. Hard to believe it now, but such Christmas movie staples as 'It's a Wonderful Life' and 'A Christmas Story' were once forgotten film flops. It was only after years of obscurity, followed by endless replays on TV, that these two films became as much a holiday tradition as egg nog or massive credit card debt.
There are lots of Christmas movies out there that may be as unknown or culty as 'It's a Wonderful Life' and 'Christmas Story' once were. Maybe not every movie on the list deserves to become a holiday staple, but they're certainly worth checking out. And maybe some will become a seasonal favorite of yours.

They say that two is better than one, but for songstress Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon, it looks like there is only one bun cooking in her oven, for now. Comedian Nick is denying rumors that the couple is expecting twins.

In a simple grey suit with his blue eyes blazing, Ryan Gosling is making us swoon on the January cover of GQ. We can't think of a better way to kick off the year.
The "Blue Valentine" star is pictured in a black-and-white photo shoot titled "How to Look Like a Movie Star," with a caption praising the actor's work in the independent film community: "Gosling has shown a unique commitment to undermining the career he was expected to have."
Gosling tells the mag of his deep love for Disneyland, saying he often visits and reminisces of his "Mickey Mouse Club" days. He was even spotted there with "Gossip Girl's" Blake Lively back in October.
"I loved the idea that Walt Disney had this dream of a place and then made it a reality," the heartthrob says. "The fact that somebody believed in their idea so much to make it a reality.

This morning, he reacted to the honor by saying, "I am very grateful to the HFPA. I also would like to thank them for acknowledging Michelle Williams for her incredible performance. Disney invented Celebration as an ideal American small town. But recession, a brutal murder and a suicide have killed the magic
There once was a place where neighbours greeted neighbours in the quiet of summer twilight. Where children chased fireflies. And porch swings provided easy refuge from the cares of the day. The movie house showed cartoons on Saturday. The grocery store delivered. And there was one teacher who always knew you had that special something. Remember that place?
Then winter came and a chill wind blew. People lost their jobs, families foreclosed on their homes. One morning you woke up and turned to greet your neighbours but found they had gone. The movie house closed. The quiet of those early twilights was shattered by news of a brutal murder right in the centre of that place followed just days later by a man killing himself after a shoot-out with police.

Rob Liefeld's pro-Deadpool movie campaign marched on today in his Twitter feed, and he's brought "Knight and Day" and "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" into the discussion along with his belief that Fox could do far better with Ryan Reynolds in a Wade Wilson film.
In other tweets, it was a fine morning for artwork, with Jill Thompson producing a Santa Claus pic and Mahmud Asrar tackling The Engineer of "The Authority" fame. Those two gems, David Mack's reaction to "Black Swan" and Greg Rucka's push for a Lois Lane series are all retweeted below.

As promised in September, TNT brought Leverage back for three holiday episodes in order to finish out its season.
With that in mind, this week's "The Ho, Ho, Ho Job" was a nice Christmas present for fans of this light-hearted drama.
From the candy cane-looking crowbars the robbers used to the four-on-one Santa fight, so many details of this episode reflected the holiday spirit, something that would not have been complete if the team's client hadn’t been Saint Nick.
Is anyone surprised Parker loves Christmas and believes in Santa Claus? I’m not. Beth Riesgraf did such an amazing job of playing out the joy and wonder of the holiday that many often forget while we are racing around dealing with crowds, malls, traffic, etc. The look of wonder in her eyes when it started snowing at the end of the episode had me tearing up bit.
