CineSavant reaches back to a U.K. disc released in 2014, because the subject is (what else) a semi-obscure science fiction effort. Favorite John Neville stars as a scientist opposite newcomer Gabriella Licudi, a beauty who may be an invader from outer space. This is the one with the teardrops that burn; not having seen it since 1966 or so, evaluating a ‘new’ Blu was an imperative. The main takeaway is that it’s awfully small-scale and the fantastic content is almost entirely confined to dialogue. But the performances are exemplary and actress Jean Marsh is terrific.

J. Lee Thompson directed this 1959 thriller about the unlikely friendship between a young tomboy played by Hayley Mills and a sailor who’s wanted for murder played by Horst Buchholz. This was Hayley’s first film and her father John (also her co-star) said “She looked as if she’d been born in front of a camera.” Truer words were never spoken, her remarkably unaffected performance caught the eye of Walt Disney and the rest is movie history.

1959’s Tiger Bay stars John Mills and daughter Hayley Mills, in her first movie role. It’s a tasty role for a young actress, as she gets to expose a killer while at the same time generating sympathy for him. There is a murder – a crime of passion – committed by a sailor played by Horst Buchholz. He returns from a sea voyage to find his girlfriend has taken up with a sportscaster. Pause here for uproarious laughter, at the mere thought that a 1950s sportscaster was able to steal someone’s girlfriend. I knew plenty of sportscasters in my broadcast days and,...

It’s hard to tell if anyone from the current generation would even know about Hayley Mills but it’s safe to say that anyone growing up from the 60’s to the 90’s would be likely to remember. After all she was a child star and later on she did manage to pop up in TV shows and films every now and again. Hayley was just 12 when she was discovered and given the role in Tiger Bay, which also starred her father Sir John Mills. It was a popular movie in Britain but doesn’t seem to have enjoyed as much popularity

Hello and welcome back to our weekly roundup of what's going on across stage and screen, big and small. Film First, there's an exciting initial trailer out for the Michael Fassbender-starring, “The Snowman,” a screen adaptation of novelist Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole thriller series that tells the story of the vodka swilling, cigarette smoking, you-can-take-your-rules-and-shove-them-where-the-sun-don’t-shine Oslo cop. Called to investigate the disappearance of a woman, Harry (Fassbender) finds her scarf wrapped around a rather evil looking snowman and things get darker from there. The poster neatly sums up the mood of the film when it reads, “Soon the first snow will come...and he will kill again”. Thomas Alfredson (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) is directing and “The Snowman” is set to be released on the 13th of October. Theatre Over to stage now, and one for all you Welsh folk. “Tiger Bay the Musical”, a production that...

Beautifully restored and available for the first time on Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber’s distribution deal with Carlotta Us, the Cannes premiered 1989 directorial debut of American director Charles Lane, Sidewalk Stories, arrives for recapitulation into the cinematic zeitgeist. A black and white silent film that’s an homage, and somewhat mutated modernization of Chaplin’s classic film, The Kid (though it’s sound design would be more akin to Chaplin’s Modern Times), Lane’s heartfelt and endearing film plays like a time capsule love letter to the eternal city. At the same time, it represents a chapter in the enduring evolution of the representation of the homeless, a changing landscape often unnoticed, a detail written off as an unavoidable constant.
A homeless street artist (Charles Lane) lives off the meager sum he receives while drawing portraits, though he faces stiff competition from neighboring peers. One evening, he witness...

The poster screamed: “Most criminals answer to the law. The world’s most savage executioner must answer to Bronson.” Since the late 1960s, Charles Bronson’s name on a marquee was a guarantee of unchained action. When The Evil That Men Do opened in 1984, fans were hit with the expected violence─but this time they were also assaulted with thick layers of sadism, sleaze and depravity. And they loved it.
Born in 1921, Charles Bronson (originally Bunchinsky) was a dirt-poor Pennsylvania coal miner before he was drafted and later used the GI Bill to study acting. After dozens of small roles, he became a popular supporting player in hit films like The Magnificent Seven (1960) and The Great Escape (1963)─then went overseas to star in European pictures like Farewell, Friend (1967), Once Upon a Time in the West (1967) and Rider on the Rain (1970). Ruth Negga won a host of admirers with her portrayal of Shirley Bassey on BBC TV last year. Now she's set to break through with a major Channel 4 spy drama and a role in Steve McQueen's next movie
Ruth Negga looks over her shoulder. "Hold on a minute," she says, leaning back to peer beneath our cafeteria table on an upper floor of the Riba building in central London. She bends to look under her chair. "Where is my movie career?"
The 30-year-old actor is clowning, and this is her way of telling me I've touched on a subject that has come up before. A best newcomer nominee at the Olivier Awards back in 2003, Negga has had memorable success in the theatre across the intervening decade, particularly at the National: Aricia next to Helen Mirren's Phèdre, Ophelia opposite Rory Kinnear's Hamlet. And she's done plenty of...

In 1976 Italian movie mogul Dino De Laurentiis unleashed his heavily promoted King Kong to eager audiences. Though a modest success, the remake was trashed by critics and, especially in light of Peter Jackson’s 2005 version, has aged horribly. The next year De Laurentiis released another monster movie, The White Buffalo which critics pounced on as well and this time, even though it starred box-office champ Charles Bronson, audiences stayed away. But the years have been much kinder to The White Buffalo, a weird, offbeat western/monster hybrid that uses real historical figures for a unique riff on Moby Dick. It’s an unusual movie, ripe for rediscovery. I had written about it a couple of years ago in my Not available on DVD column and it’s now available as part of the MGM Limited Edition Collection

The Marvellous Mrs Beeton, With Sophie Dahl
8pm, BBC2
Along with Lorraine Pascale, Sophie Dahl is another of the BBC's roster of models-turned-domestic-goddesses. Dahl's show isn't simply a cook-to-camera affair, though. Mrs Beeton's Book Of Household Management (1861) attempted to cover all aspects of running a home, from recipes to providing a template for housewifely deportment. As Dahl discovers, although we imagine Mrs B as a middle-aged matriarch, she wrote the book in her early 20s, and by 28, was dead. John Robinson

8pm, Sky Living
In Sarah Michelle Gellar's first TV drama role since Buffy, she plays Bridget, a recovering addict who was witness to a murder. The cherry blossom is at its best, and James Cameron's iPod-fired installation of the Tree of Souls is rooting resplendent in Hyde Park. In celebration, nilpferd fells the best film clips featuring our fronded friends
"Of all the wonders of nature, a tree in summer is perhaps the most remarkable," said Woody Allen, "with the possible exception of a moose singing 'Embraceable You' in spats".
There's certainly something fickle about film's relationship with our arboreal friends. The twisted roots of a dense forest conjure up debauched rituals – most recently in Lars von Trier's Antichrist – yet filmmakers will also use the gentle rustling of leaves within the crown of a mature oak to portray spiritual reflection. Trees can be passive victims of human folly, or – as in Avatar – mystically resilient organisms intimately tied into the natural world. Are you more likely to quiver at the sight of a silver birch,...

The worst thing anyone's said to me? 'Your father has died'
Hayley Mills, 63, was born in London, the daughter of the actor John Mills and the writer Mary Hayley Bell. She began her acting career at the age of 12, when she was cast alongside her father in the 1959 movie Tiger Bay, a performance for which she won a Bafta. She later signed to Walt Disney, for whom starred in Pollyanna and The Parent Trap, and her other film credits include Whistle Down The Wind and Sky West And Crooked. Since 2007, she has been appearing in the ITV series Wild At Heart. She has two sons and divides her time between London and New York, where she lives with her partner.
When were you happiest?
Now. This is the best time of my life.
What is your greatest fear?
I have a horror of being in confined spaces. Potholing is my idea of hell.

Dame Shirley Bassey returns to the music scene this week with her first album of new material in two decades - The Performance. Recording tracks written by artists as diverse as the Kaiser Chiefs, Gary Barlow, Pet Shop Boys and Manic Street Preachers, it should introduce the Welsh icon to a whole new generation of music fans. The 'Goldfinger' singer has played pretty much every major venue in the world and has collaborated with some of the biggest stars of all time, but here are ten facts that you may not know about old Shirl. 1. Shirley Bassey was born on January 8, 1937 in Tiger Bay, Cardiff to Henry and Eliza Jane. She was their seventh child! 2. Bassey's first job involved her packaging enamelware in a factory. However, this didn't stop her testing out her vocal chords. She says: "The supervisor would say, 'Bassey, what do you think (more)...

In honor of Quentin Tarantino week here at Wamg, this column will tackle the 1968 British psycho-thriller Twisted Nerve. A music highlight of Tarantino’s first Kill Bill film in 2003 occurs during the scene when Darryl Hannah’s eye-patched Elle Driver is walking down the hospital corridors intending to dispatch Uma Thurman and she’s whistling this haunting tune that is at the same time both childlike and threatening. Curious, I read the closing credits and the strange song was identified as the theme from the movie Twisted Nerve composed by Bernard Herrmann. That title was familiar as I had its cool psychedelic U.S. one-sheet in my collection but I’d never seen the film and immediately became determined to track it down. I was able to secure a British Pal import of the film and was pleased to find Twisted Nerve an excellent, nasty little forgotten thriller about a warped young psychopath.
