Exclusive: Peter Elkoff has joined newly ordered ABC/20th Television drama series Alaska, headlined by Hilary Swank, as executive producer and showrunner. For the past two seasons, the seasoned TV writer-producer served as executive producer and co-showrunner on another 20th TV drama series, Fox’s The Resident. Fellow exec producer/co-showrunner Andrew Chapman will be the sole showrunner for the medical drama’s upcoming sixth season.
Alaska, created by Spotlight filmmaker Tom McCarthy, who wrote and directed the pilot, emerged as an early front-runner at ABC this pilot season, making the search for a showrunner a big priority for the studio. With The Resident on the bubble as renewal negotiations between Fox and 20th TV went down to the wire, Elkoff was approached about Alaska and took the job with the 20th TV’s blessing.

The power of “The Bachelor” spinoff “Bachelor in Paradise” across broadcast television and social media is why the reality dating show is taking over Monday and Tuesday nights this fall on ABC, Craig Erwich, president, Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment, told TheWrap on Tuesday.
“BiP” will move into the Monday time slot previously held by “Dancing with the Stars,” moving out of its usual August-September run. The “BiP” news follows “DWTS’” move to streamer Disney+ after after 16 seasons on ABC.
“‘Dancing with the Stars’ has been an incredible program on ABC over the last 16 years, but we also have an incredible opportunity to bring ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ back to Monday nights and Tuesday nights,” Erwich said.
The exec said “BiP’s” ratings numbers for live and same-day “matched or exceeded” those set by “DWTS” and it remains a conversation starter.

ABC is the latest network to firm up its plans for the fall, and there are some huge changes.
Big Sky is on the move again.
The David E. Kelley thriller is leaving its Thursdays at 10 p.m. slot to move to Wednesdays at 10 p.m.
The series has not been performing well out of Grey's Anatomy this season, so it makes sense to use Grey's to power up a freshman entry.
The new Hilary Swank drama series Alaska is getting the 10 p.m. on Thursdays slot.
Station 19 will remain at 8 p.m. in one of the least surprising moves of the season.
A Million Little Things is being held for midseason.
The series has spent much of its run on the bubble, landing a surprise fifth-season renewal last week.

Jewel is paying homage to both her home state and the newest generation of singer-songwriters with a cover of Maggie Rogers’ 2016 breakthrough single, “Alaska.” Eschewing the minimalistic production of Rogers’ original, the Pieces Of You singer transforms the viral indie hit into a dreamy maximalist pop banger, accentuated by 1980s-inspired drum beats and breathy coos.

Each week on “The Pit Stop,” Monét X Change runs down the tricks and trades of the newest episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” with a guest host. Following Friday’s fifth episode, All Stars 2 winner Alaska stops by to “save us all” with the truth that a foundation supporting queens that went home first is much less necessary than the need for a group that gives financial support to the queens that go home second. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Monét and Alaska lament the premature departure of Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté, but agree with Kornbread that it gives the rest of the queens a fighting chance at making the finale that they otherwise probably wouldn’t have had. Alaska also serves the tea that she learned how to do wigs from Jaymes Mansfield‘s...

Kenneth Wannberg, composer and Emmy-winning music editor who worked on nearly half of all John Williams’ films dating back to the late 1960s, died Jan. 27 at his home in Florence, Oregon. He was 91.
Wannberg was best known as Williams’ music editor, working closely with the composer on more than 50 of his films. He assisted Williams throughout the scoring process, from providing detailed descriptions of sequences to be scored to more technical aspects such as trimming or modifying music during the last stages of post-production.
He music-edited the first six “Star Wars” films, the first three “Indiana Jones” films and such other landmark Williams scores as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Jurassic Park,” “Schindler’s List” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”
During his 50-year career in films, Wannberg worked with many other composers including Bernard Herrmann (“Journey to the Center of the Earth”), Jerry Goldsmith (“The Mephisto Waltz”), Michael Convertino...

ABC has given a pilot order to The Son In Law, a single-camera comedy written and executive produced by Ajay Sahgal (The Carmichael Show) and executive produced by Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar, the duo behind such series as ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat and Disney+’s Doogie Kealoha, M.D. 20th Television, where Kasdan and Mar are based, is the studio, with Kasdan’s The Detective Agency producing.
Because the 2020-21 broadcast development cycle was shifted by the pandemic, many pitches came in late, with networks moving their development to off-cycle and pilot pickups to fall. Over the last month, ABC has greenlighted three pilots, dramas Alaska, starring Hilary Swank, and LA Law, headlined by Blair Underwood, joined now by Son In Law, originally put in development at the network in January.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 9
If there’s one thing Fear the Walking Dead understands about existing in a zombie apocalypse, it’s that living is hard. Every week, our grizzled cast of characters must contend with the inevitable attrition within their ranks. As we learned last week with poor John Dorie, it’s not a matter of if you’ll die, but when you’ll die. Sometimes our hapless survivors see death coming, but more often than not it’s an ugly surprise, meted out by the living. That brings us to “Things Left to Do” and an unexpectedly early end to Virginia’s reign, which is a shame, really, since Colby Minifie delivers a truly knockout final performance. But more on Virginia in a bit.

During The Great North‘s TCA slot on Wednesday, creators Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin had a message for networks with new shows in progress: “Pick up those seasons early.”
Months before the Molyneux sisters’ Alaska comedy made its debut on Fox in January, the network ordered a sophomore reason, granting the showrunners an organic platform and the confidence to expand their stories, they said.
“I think it gave us a feeling of confidence and the ability to relax and feel like the stories we were telling were the right kind of stories,” said Lizzie. “I think everyone has had a very difficult year and things have been tough for everyone, so I think it was nice to have that sense of comfort and confidence going into season two.”

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 7
The last time I struggled to write a review for Fear the Walking Dead was the season 4 finale, “…I Lose Myself.” I wrote at the time, “Several false starts and a couple thousand words later, I realized I wasn’t writing a review for a lackluster episode. Rather, I was writing a eulogy for a show I once loved.”
Unfortunately, history seems to be repeating itself. And this is a difficult thing to admit, since season 6 showed so much promise. If this season could be described as a single color, it would be greige, the nearly nonexistent color that exists between beige and grey. Greige is the color of long-in-the-tooth zombies. It is the color of leftover oatmeal. Greige is, in a word, the very color of boredom itself. Season 6 hasn’t been all bad, of course.

When Julia Cooper stepped on stage for her blind audition on The Voice, she was probably feeling lots of nerves. By the end of her performance, however, those nerves turned into opportunities. Three judges (everyone except Blake) turned around during her flawless rendition of “Alaska” by Maggie Rogers. Julia’s beautiful voice also impressed the people at home and many viewers went straight to social media to compliment her on her talent. Julia decided to join John Legend’s team and it’s safe to say that she will be in great hands throughout the season. Continue reading to learn 10 things you

Monday’s blind auditions episode of “The Voice” Season 19 began with a whopping 31 of the Top 40 artists having already found homes on one of the four teams. Three of the coaches had acquired eight contestants apiece, while the fourth (John Legend) was right behind with seven members. Only a trio of artists had wowed the panel enough to become four-chair turns, with Tamara Jade and Cami Clune joining Team Legend and Desz picking Team Kelly. With the blind auditions now complete, did tonight’s two-hour episode feature anymore four-chair moments?

Fear the Walking Dead season 6 delivered its first big reveal of the season at the very end of “Alaska.” After months of searching for his long lost wife, Dwight finally reunited with Sherry (Christine Evangelista) in a surprising manner, connecting via walkie basically out of nowhere. Whatever you might think of the way the reunion was executed — I found the matter-of-fact way Dwight ran into Sherry to be a bit underwhelming — this cliffhanger ending marks a major milestone in Dwight’s story of love lost. Now reunited with Sherry, perhaps the former Saviors can finally begin to do what Morgan begged that they do at the end of season 5: live.
But where has Sherry been all of this time? In case you don’t remember, she’s been missing since The Walking Dead season 7 episode “Hostiles and Calamities.” After freeing Daryl...

Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 3
I have to say, we may only be three episodes in, but I’m really enjoying Fear the Walking Dead season 6 so far. Sure, maybe it’s the prolonged cabin fever talking—we are seven months into a pandemic, after all. Or maybe Fear the Walking Dead has finally hit its stride.
Before we really delve into this episode, though, I will say this: I haven’t given many 5-star ratings to Fear over the last five seasons I’ve reviewed the show, but “Alaska” is as close to perfect as you can get. So much of what makes this episode work is due to Colman Domingo’s solid direction and Mallory Westfall’s smart, heartfelt script. But in the end, strong performances from Austin Amelio, Maggie Grace, and newcomer Devyn Tyler carry the day. In short,...

The full line-up of everything that’s coming to Disney Plus next month has been revealed. September will prove to be a hugely important one for the streaming service, too, thanks to the release of Mulan. Dropping on the first Friday of the month, the live-action remake of the classic animated movie is breaking the mold by going up on D+ alongside a limited theatrical release. As you probably know, though, you’ll have to fork out an additional $30 to watch it, as part of a new Premier Access level to the site.
Mulan is the most headline-grabbing addition to the service next month, then, but there’s plenty more besides that coming to D+ in September. Including a few classic Disney movies, a bunch of others inherited from Fox, various National Geographic documentaries and much more.

Ed Harris has popped up a few times in my Catalog From the Beyond’s coverage, which isn’t surprising considering he’s one of my favorite character actors of all time. He brings an intensity that always seems like he’s on the brink of a meltdown in any movie he’s in, from a vengeful gangster in A History of Violence to an obsessed LARPer in George Romero’s Knightriders. The dude even dances like a nut in Creepshow. As it turns out, this simmering rage is the perfect fit for the lead in another Stephen King property, 1993’s Needful Things.
Based on King’s 1991 novel, Needful Things features Harris as Castle Rock sheriff Alan Pangborn, who’s settled into what he thinks will be a quiet life after leaving the Pittsburgh police force. As the movie opens, things are looking up, as he proposed to local diner owner Polly Chalmers.

The queens traded their wigs for hard hats on this week’s Drag Race All Stars as they worked in teams to design and sell Ru-tique hotel suites — one made of gold, one inspired by The Golden Girls, and one… with a built-in golden shower.
But first, drama! While discussing Ongina’s recent elimination, which was basically a self-elimination, Miz Cracker was given a chance to explain why she messed with Ongina’s head in the first place — and her answer was not well-received.
