This past weekend, the world got a little less entertaining with the passing of veteran actor John Saxon, whose career spanned over an impressive seven decades. A truly singular onscreen presence, Saxon was teen idol turned character actor with a penchant for playing authority figures throughout his diverse career.
If you look at Saxon’s Hollywood résumé, John’s contributions to both the cinema and small screen entertainment are endless, with roles in timeless classics like The Plunderers, Posse from Hell, Summer Love, The Appaloosa, Death of a Gunfighter, Gunsmoke, Fantasy Island, The Big Score, Fast Company (which was directed by an up-and-coming David Cronenberg), Falcon Crest, Running Scared (1980), Beverly Hills Cop III, Dynasty, Melrose Place (playing Daphne Zuniga’s lawyer for multiple episodes), and of course, Enter the Dragon, opposite Bruce Lee.

With so many folks out there looking for ways to keep themselves entertained at home right now, perhaps this new batch of home media releases might have something to offer you this week. If you missed it in theaters last year, the controversial Black Christmas remake hits both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday, and Scream Factory has put together a fourth volume in their Universal Horror Collection series, which looks like a must-own for all classic genre fans out there.
Also headed to Blu this week is The Nines, which is one of my favorite underseen films from Ryan Reynolds, as well as Cannibal Apocalypse, featuring John Saxon. We also have Glenn Danzig’s Verotika coming out on Tuesday and if you need something to keep the kiddos busy, Jumanji: The Next Level should do the trick.

Lionsgate has unveiled the final trailer for “Hellboy,” Neil Marshall’s reboot of the comic-book series first brought to the silver screen by Guillermo del Toro. Replacing Ron Perlman as the eponymous Cambion is “Stranger Things” star David Harbour, with Milla Jovovich and Ian McShane co-starring in this take on the “Darkness Calls,” “The Wild Hunt,” and “The Storm and the Fury” storylines. Watch the trailer below.
The project wasn’t exactly riding a wave of goodwill when it was first announced, as fans of del Toro’s first two entries in the series — not to mention everyone involved with making 2004’s “Hellboy” and 2008’s “The Golden Army” — have long wanted the Oscar winner to complete his own trilogy. Marshall is no slouch, however, having previously directed “The Descent” and two acclaimed “Game of Thrones” episodes: “Blackwater” and “The Watchers on the Wall,” the latter of which earned him an Emmy nomination.

This is the 25th anniversary of Mike Mignola’s first Hellboy comic book and, unlike the work-for-hire creators of Batman, Iron Man, the X-Men and most other comics properties, he actually owns his creation. On Saturday, the writer-artist and his scarlet-hued brainchild will step into the spotlight at New York Comic Con for a panel promoting their latest Hollywood adventure, the upcoming Hellboy film from Summit Entertainment.
The April 2019 theatrical release from Liongate’s Summit will be the third Hollywood adaptation of Mignola’s demonic do-gooder but, oddly, it will be the second of them to be released with that single-word title. The new movie isn’t a remake of director Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 film titled Hellboy, so why duplicate the name?

Veteran U.S film producer Gary Kurtz, producer of movies including Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and America Graffiti, has died in London aged 78.
Kurtz passed away yesterday, Sunday September 23, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Starting as an assistant director on Montel Hellman’s western Ride in the Whirlwind, starring Jack Nicholson, he also worked on Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet and Dennis Hopper’s Queen of Blood. After military service, he was an associate picture on Chandler and Two-Lane Backdrop before meeting George Lucas in 1971. He co-produced American Graffiti, before making a deal with 20th Century Fox to produce Star Wars; he set up the second unit and directed many pick ups, including most of the cockpit dog fight scenes, as well as the special effects.
The UK-based Kurtz then worked on Empire Strikes Back, his last collaboration with Lucas. He helped to direct alongside Irvin Kershner.

Sometimes it takes someone with horns (or the remnants of them) to take down evil, as evidenced in Mike Mignola's Hellboy comic book series and Guillermo del Toro's two film adaptations. And before we see Neil Marshall's new take on the popular franchise, Funko is releasing a line of Pop! vinyl figures based on the comic book version of the beloved demon and several of his friends (and enemies).
From Funko: "The Hellboy comic book series is joining the Funko family and receiving the Pop! vinyl treatment!
This series includes Hellboy, the vigilante Lobster Johnson, pyrokinetic Liz Sherman, and fish-man Abe Sapien.
In addition to our heroes are the evil sorcerer, Grigori Rasputin, and The Queen of Blood, Nimue!
Look for the Hellboy chase piece, Hellboy with horns. A rarity of 1-in-6.
Coming this Fall!"

As Scream Factory continues to release pared-down catalogue titles on their now five-year-old label, the brand keeps expanding to include all different kinds of movies. Once known for releasing deluxe special editions of horror fan favorites, the company has diversified over the last half decade and begun releasing new films (as part of their deal with IFC midnight), unknown (and sometimes previously unavailable) cult films, a handful of classics, and even their own in-house productions. This last batch of catalogue titles, the majority of which have been released with only minimum bonus features but new HD scans, continues to broaden the reach of the Scream Factory brand to include a range of titles from secretly successful ’70s sexploitation sci-fi to well-intentioned failures of the 1990s.

This four-feature set is the weirdest cinematic treasure box of the year, a sort of anti-matter film school. Three of the films are derived from a single Yugoslavian picture rejected by Roger Corman. His acolytes Jack Hill and Stephanie Rothman proceeded to add serial killings, supernatural hauntings, a goofy vampire, and an ending that could be called 'Zombies In The Wax Museum.' Though the 1966 space-age vampire flick Queen of Blood is not new to home video, it has been one of the more elusive science-fiction titles of the 1960s. Issued on VHS as Planet of Blood back in the early 1980s on the budget “Star Classics” label and later in 1990 on a much improved laser disc from Image (paired with Mario Bava’s similarly-themed Planet of the Vampires), Queen of Blood has been mostly unavailable to collectors for nearly twenty-five years. In March 2011 MGM finally re-issued the title as part of its Limited Edition Collection, but only as a made-on-demand release. In 2015, Kino Lorber has – very happily for genre fans and collectors - rescued this title from the wasteland of cult-film marginalia with their superb Blu-Ray release of this Roger Corman-Curtis Harrington classic.

December 1st Blu-ray & DVD Releases Include Fear The Walking Dead Season 1, Goodnight Mommy, Cooties
Hard to believe it, but December is finally upon us and for the first Tuesday of the month, the new horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases are an eclectic, but awesome, bunch. Anchor Bay is keeping busy with both Goodnight Mommy (easily one of my favorites of 2015) and season one of Fear the Walking Dead on Blu-ray and DVD, and Lionsgate is bringing home the dark comedy Cooties to both formats as well.
Kino Lorber is also resurrecting two cult classics on December 1st—Twice Told Tales and Queen of Blood—and a pair of indie films debut this week too: L.A. Slasher and Tokyo Tribe.
Fear the Walking Dead: Season One (Anchor Bay Entertainment, Blu-ray & DVD)
Living in the same universe as The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family.

Curtis Harrington took an assignment nobody else would and fashioned a gem of low-budget Sci-Fi. A Russian space epic provides expensive-looking special effects scenes for a new horror show about a deadly alien rescued from a crash landing on Mars. The extras include excellent interviews with Roger Corman and effects specialist / historian Robert Skotak.

Queen of Blood is a difficult movie to truly recommend. I am not sure if I even fully liked it. But at the same time I can say that I didnt hate it. There are stunning tidbits of it that are much too beautiful to not appreciate. It is clear that Alexander loves European horror movies. Even if you had never read a single issue of Fangoria where he often talks about his love of these films its evident here.

Autonomy Pictures is moving forward with the next Chris Alexander directing vehicle, Queen of Blood. The film is a follow-up to the DVD/Blu-ray release Blood for Irina.
The new film will further deconstruct the vampire myth created in "Irina" and is currently in pre-production and will be released in Spring 2014.
"With my first film, which was an education in filmmaking, I created an unconventional, mood piece tackling themes such as death, birth, redemption, addiction and loneliness,” says Alexander. “With Queen of Blood, I will continue to expand on those themes and fuse them into a Horror/Western hybrid which will make it a darker, stranger and visceral film experience. I’m excited that I’m working with Autonomy Pictures again as they give me complete creative freedom to bring my vision to life."

We live in a media world that has been oversaturated with vampires; particularly in recent years, as the young adult fiction market seems to have blossomed into an excuse for girls to be whisked away by creatures of the night. It’s ruined the entire concept of vampirism, really; with very few exceptions in cinema or literature.
Thank the gods we have comics to remind us that even when it comes to a monster as overused as the vampire, there are still stories to be told, if done well. I give you three examples from this week’s hefty load of quality material.
I, Vampire #19
Story: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Art: Fernando Blanco & Andrea Sorrentino
Why It Works: Narrative intelligence. The problem with a lot of vampire stories is that they focus entirely on the state of vampirism without venturing outside of it to bring in antagonists or storylines that might feature well otherwise.

The private investigator has been with us for years, decades really. When I was younger I read as many private eye mysteries as I did science fiction and horror novels and short stories. I read as much of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett and Mickey Spillane as I could find. I also read a lot of the two MacDonald’s, Ross MacDonald’s novels about Lew Archer (one of which made a great movie with Paul Newman as Harper) and John D. MacDonald’s novels about Travis McGee. Although McGee was not strictly speaking a Pi he still functioned as one in MacDonald’s color coded novels like Darker Than Amber (which made a great movie with Rod Taylor).
I used to stay up late to watch classic private eye movies like The Maltese Falcon, Kiss Me Deadly (the best Mike Hammer movie ever, seriously!) Murder My Sweet,...

Just about every horror fan knows about Chris Alexander – writer, musician, journalist, and most famously Editor-in-Chief of Fangoria magazine. Now you can add film directing, cinematography and editing to that resume, as Chris has recently completed his first feature Blood for Irina – a surreal, dreamlike and provocative experiment inspired in part by some of international cinema's most beloved auteurs. I had a very cool Q&A with Chris about the film, his creative process, and the musical score, which he composed and performed himself.
FEARnet: I'm excited that Blood for Irina is making the rounds now. How does it feel seeing it on the big screen? Chris: It is exciting, and extra special for me, considering it was made for nothing and was my “hobby” movie. A few people actually like it and some even think it's destined for cult status. Who knows? But I'm enjoying the ride. How many...

Check out the first of six five-minute episodes after the jump. Part 1 of The Fury premiered on Felicia Day's Geek & Sundry. MTV has a new interview with Mike Mignola in which he talks a little bit about his next Hellboy comic epic, Hellboy in Hell: "The first issue comes out in December, I can say with some confidence... Because it's done. In fact, I've bumped it back a couple of times, to make sure I had a lot of wiggle room to take my time and do it right. The first four...

Joshua Hale Fialkov's I… Vampire (with art by Andrea Sorrentino) debuted several months ago from DC Comics as part of the company's "New 52". A reboot/continuation of the 1980s comic about a sixteenth century lord named Andrew Bennett out to stop his lover/enemy Mary Seward (a.k.a. Mary, Queen of Blood) from wiping out humanity, the book's fourth issue is due out this Wednesday, December 28th (check out our exclusive five-page preview here). In the interview that follows the jump, Fialkov talks about writing vampires in a world filled with superheroes, as well as his other new comic projects, and why he considers comics one of the greatest mediums in which to tell stories. We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

In the latest of our comprehensive series of reviews of DC Comics' 52 relaunched titles, we take a look at I, Vampire #1. Who's it by?
I, Vampire #1 is written by Joshua Hale Fialkov (Echoes) and drawn by Andrea Sorrentino (God of War). What's the history?
The star of I, Vampire is Lord Andrew Bennett, a man from the 16th century who was transformed into one of the undead but swore to himself never to relinquish his humanity. He was introduced in issue #290 of DC's horror comic House of Mystery in 1981, invented by Jm DeMatteis and Tom Sutton. His primary antagonist was Mary, Queen of Blood, who had been his mortal lover but was corrupted when he transformed her into a vampire. The 'I... Vampire' storyline ran for two years in House of Mystery before its conclusion, and Bennett (more)...

Hellboy: The Fury #2
Written by Mike Mignola

Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price $2.99
Release date: July 13, 2011
Part 2 of a 3-part storyline, Hellboy: The Fury #2 starts immediately into the war with the Queen of Blood. Knights fight on both sides and we even get a glimpse of The Four Horsemen, though truthfully it's the Three Horsemen and One Pedestrian (a pseudo Terry Pratchett reference for those in the know). Blood abounds, bodies lay scattered, and Hellboy seems to be on the losing end of this battle. Could this be the fabled Ragnarok the Norse always spoke of?
Hellboy stands as the bastion of good in this battle, but is severely outnumbered and most certainly the underdog. Even the mighty Hellboy cannot bring down this mighty dragon queen. The ravens that appear throughout the comic lend themselves to the Norse theme of death and destruction, of course...

Tuesday, DVD roundup day, is a fine day for taking a look at the new Summer 2011 issue of Cineaste, particularly since, among the online samplings this time around, DVD reviews outnumber all other types of articles combined.

The documentary sequences have no commentary, mostly last ten to fifteen minutes, and take their cue from Farocki's earlier An Image (Ein bild, 1983). Yonkers - Ernie Kovacs is the patron saint of innovative TV comedies. His impact can be felt on everything from Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In to Monty Python’s Flying Circus to Saturday Night Live. Shout! Factory’s The Ernie Kovacs Collection gives a survey of his short yet stellar career that ended in 1962 with his death. Over the course of six DVDs, you realize this guy truly revolutionized what you could do on TV.
The boxset doesn’t have any of the episodes from his original Three to Get Ready show that aired on Philly TV. Along with creating comedy shows, he hosted talkshows, gameshows and even variety shows. He even contributed to Mad Magazine. His famous mustache and cigar popped up all over the dial.

● The Black Sleep (1958): The masters of classic horror (Basil Rathbone, John Carradine, Bela Lugosi, and Lon Chaney, Jr.) gather together and meet in a spooky old house in which a crazed scientist creates frightening human mutants. Directed by Reginald LeBorg.
● Queen Of Blood (1966): When an alien ship crash-lands on Mars, a rescue ship is sent to look for survivors. They find just one: an alien vampire, who starts killing the crew by sucking their blood. Directed by Curtis Harrington.

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Dennis Hopper’s long film career began with the 1955 teen angst classic Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean, and he helped usher in Hollywood’s New Wave as director and star of the counterculture anthem Easy Rider in 1969. He later became a respected character actor, specializing in such off-beat villains as the drug-addicted, obscenity-spouting Frank Black in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986), crazed bomber Howard Payne in the 1994 action-thriller Speed with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and Deacon in Kevin Costner’s soggy post-apocalyptic saga Waterworld (1995).
Hopper was born in Dodge City, Kansas on May 17, 1936. He moved to San Diego, California with his family in the late 1940s, and began studying at the local Old Globe Theater while attending high school. He soon signed with Warner Brothers and was featured in a small role in 1955’s Rebel Without a Cause. He was later featured as Jordan Benedict III, the...

Hell-raising actor and director who created memorable roles in films from Easy Rider to Blue Velvet
Dennis Hopper, who has died of cancer aged 74, was one of Hollywood's great modern outlaws. His persona, on and off the screen, signified the lost idealism of the 1960s. There were stages in Hopper's career when he was deemed unemployable because of his reputation as a hell-raiser and his substance abuse. However, he made spectacular comebacks and managed to kick his dependence on alcohol and cocaine.
Born in Dodge City, Kansas, Hopper, whose father was a post-office manager and mother a lifeguard instructor, expressed an interest in painting and acting at a young age. While still in his teens, he appeared in repertory at Pasadena Playhouse, California, and studied acting with Dorothy McGuire and John Swope at the Old Globe theatre, San Diego.

Over 50 years and 249 issues (give or take!) in the making! Famous Monsters of Filmland is proud to present, for your entertainment, the sometimes inspiring and sometimes shocking, at turns awe-inducing and yet occasionally quite absurd, remarkable yet for the most part obscure, not-entirely-true history of perhaps the greatest (or at least one of the most ubiquitous) cameo and walk-on performers of all time: Forrest J Ackerman!
This special celebratory issue of FM is devoted to discussion of dozens of cinematic classics (and not-so-classics) from several decades of filmmaking — all seemingly unconnected, yet linked forever in fandom’s minds and hearts by the presence (however unnoticed) of the unforgettable Ackermonster. We’re talking Dracula vs. Frankenstein, Queen of Blood, Kentucky Fried Movie, the 1976 production of King Kong, Equinox, Return of the Living Dead Part 2, and many, many (too many?) more!
Our tongue-in-cheek salute to our Uncle Forry’s illustrious film career...

Body Count: Volume 12 Some of my earliest horror movie memories are in the early 80's. I was a cartoon junkie like most kids my age and you know how it goes on any saturday morning. Or maybe you know how it used to go. Get up wicked early, pour a massive bowl of cereal and hunker down for a good five solid hours of cartoon programming. From 7am to noon you could find all manner of colorful adventure but like most communities, noon time rolled around and it was time for kids to go outside and play so the grown ups could catch the weekend edition of the news or candlepin bowling. At least that's how it was around these parts, except for one thing. Back in the early 80's, we still had a holdout saturday afternoon monster movie show. Ours was Wlvi's Creature Double Feature, a show so patently...
