Long-time friends Tilda Swinton and Pedro Almodóvar are reuniting for the Oscar-winning director’s first English-language feature, “The Room Next Door.”
It’s hard to believe the Scottish high priestess of playing women unmoored from the people and places around her had never collaborated with the Spanish filmmaker before his proper English-language debut, “The Human Voice.” In that sharp shock of a 30-minute film, based on a Jean Cocteau play, Swinton starred as a woman going through a breakup over the telephone, surrounded by expressive Almodóvarian set design on a soundstage, and eventually a fire.
In “The Room Next Door,” also being released by Almodóvar’s perennial North American distributor Sony Pictures Classics, she’s a woman named Martha grappling with a strained relationship with her mother, and helped by a friend named Ingrid.
Swinton was embargoed from saying too much about the film, now in pre-production and shooting in Madrid next week,...

Nearly a year since it premiered at SXSW, Julio Torres’ “Problemista” finally had its New York City premiere at the Village East by Angelika on Tuesday, February 27. His A24 satire stars Tilda Swinton, Isabella Rossellini, James Scully, Greta Lee, and RZA, to name a few. On the red carpet, producer Emma Stone, alongside fellow producers Dave McCary and Ali Herting, even made a surprise appearance.
“She was very happy to do it,” Julio Torres said of getting Tilda Swinton involved as his co-lead. “She was a little worried about playing an American, then we talked and she didn’t have to be American. She found this creature, we don’t know where she came from. Like a dragon, she emerged from a cave.”
Tilda Swinton was visibly very excited to be in Manhattan in support of this project. “Julio sent me [the script] and asked me to come play with him,” the Oscar winner said.

At 48, Pedro Pascal is at the peak of his acting career with studios queuing up for a date from the actor. While Pascal currently has roles in fan-favorite projects with Disney and HBO, there was one special project that the Game of Thrones actor loved working on in 2023. Pascal played one of the leads in Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar’s short film, Strange Way of Life. The encounter with the legendary director was like meeting a king for Pascal.

Almodóvar is one of the few Spanish language directors who has a cult following globally. Pascal’s short film was the director’s second English-language effort after the 2020 short film, The Human Voice.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired Pedro Almodóvar’s English-language feature debut, The Room Next Door, starring Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton and John Turturro. The Spanish master’s frequent collaborators at SPC have taken North America, the Middle East, India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Produced by Almodóvar’s El Deseo, the film will begin shooting this March in New York and Madrid.
Almodóvar says the film is “about a very imperfect mother and her resentful daughter, who live separate lives because of a profound misunderstanding. Ingrid (Moore), a friend of the mother, will become the custodian to mother and daughter’s pain and bitterness. Martha, the mother (Swinton), is a war correspondent and Ingrid is an auto fiction novelist.”

Sony Pictures Classics is reuniting with Pedro Almodovar and will release the cinematic legend’s first English-language feature film, “The Room Next Door.”
The indie studio announced it has acquired all rights in North America, the Middle East, India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand to the film, which is set to star Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, along with John Turturro. The film will begin shooting this March in New York and Madrid. Almodovar has been thinking of directing an English-language feature for some time — at one point, he considered making 2016’s “Julieta” with Meryl Streep.
The news about the distribution deal is wholly expected (it would be more shocking if Almodovar found a different partner). That’s because Sony Pictures Classics has released nearly all of Almodovar’s movies. Most recently, it oversaw the distribution of “Parallel Mothers,” which earned an Oscar nomination for Penélope Cruz.

The Oscar-winning Scottish actor answers questions from Observer readers and famous fans including Pedro Almodóvar, Wes Anderson and Elton John
Tilda Swinton has been posing in different costumes for the Observer’s photographer and, as I arrive, has just changed into tartan trousers, saucy two-tone shoes and is standing perfectly still as a hairdresser attends to a blond quiff that makes her look like an incredible exotic bird – or a dandy hooligan, although her face looks too seraphic to mutate into aggro. What you see almost at once is that Swinton is giving 100% to the task at hand while being obligingly considerate to everyone around her. The mix of professionalism with warmth disarms, especially when you might have expected a superstar loftiness.

A24’s Dicks: The Musical had one of the best limited openings of the year, grossing $220,867 on seven screens in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. It expands in NY/LA/Sf next weekend ahead of a national rollout starting 10/20 for the R-rated romp directed by Larry Charles.
The film, developed and co-produced by Chernin Entertainment (The Greatest Showman) based on a stage show by comedians Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, caught a wave with a solid per screen average of $31,552 including sold out Q&As in NY and LA. Sharp and Aaron star as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents played by Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally. A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.
Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. They’re joined by an A-list roster of Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion.

While the sheer power of Taylor Swift scared off a number of October releases to flee further into the year, this month still offers no shortage of heavy hitters. From one of the most-anticipated films of the last many years to acclaimed documentaries to the final feature from a legendary director, there’s plenty to seek out.
13. Beyond Utopia (Madeleine Gavin; Oct. 23)
One of the most acclaimed documentaries of the year, Madeleine Gavin’s Sundance audience award winner Beyond Utopia tracks the intense, harrowing journey of a handful of individuals who attempt to flee North Korea. Considering how few dispatches we see from inside the country, this promises to be a rare, vital look at the costs of freedom.
12. Once Within a Time (Godfrey Reggio & Jon Kane; Oct. 13 in theaters)
Godfrey Reggio, the legendary director of the Qatsi trilogy, is back with Once Within a Time, co-directed by Jon Kane.

Pedro Almodóvar’s canon abounds in nimble, yet edgy, remembrances of things past. In Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, All About My Mother, and Volver, he paid homage to the language of melodrama while crafting his own version of it. Those and many of his earlier films are pervaded with a humor toward the power that the most basic elements of drama have when pushed to their aesthetic, emotional, and formal limits.
Lately, though, Almodóvar’s work feels less bent on metatexually displaying his technical adroitness than his increasingly softer look at memory. Julieta, Pain and Glory, Parallel Mothers, and even his 2020 short The Human Voice are less fixated on accentuating the theatrical than stewing in nostalgia. And if his new short, Strange Way of Life, is any indication, each subsequent work in his filmography is proving the broth is losing a layer of flavor.

Pedro Almodovar believes Hollywood bosses need to hire more "minorities" to write movies. The Spanish filmmaker doesn't agree that only gay or Jewish actors should play gay or Jewish characters and thinks the best way to promote true diversity in the film industry is by having authentic voices bring their experiences to the story. He told The Hollywood Reporter magazine: "The essence of acting is, in fact, to pretend, to be someone other than who you are, even in your own essence. That is at the core of acting."So, for example, absolutely a heterosexual actor can play a homosexual character and vice versa."If Hollywood is so obsessed, as it is right now, with representing minorities, be they Latinos, Asians or people with disabilities, they should actually hire them to do the writing. "Just so I’m not misunderstood, I want to make sure that it is clear that...

Pedro Almodóvar, the most celebrated Spanish filmmaker since Luis Buñuel, will be the toast of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. There, his latest film — Strange Way of Life, a short Western starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and set to be distributed by Sony Classics — will have its North American premiere; he’ll receive the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media at the TIFF Tribute Awards; and he’ll participate in an “In Conversation” discussion on Sept. 9.
Almodóvar has made 21 features, among them classics like 1988’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which was nominated for the best foreign-language film Oscar; 1999’s All About My Mother, which won that Oscar; and 2002’s Talk to Her, for which he was nominated for best director and won the best original screenplay Oscar, marking only the fifth time that a non-English-language script had been awarded that trophy. Every time two cowboys point their guns at one another on screen, there’s something homoerotic at play. Hollywood Westerns may be loath to admit as much, but not so Pedro Almodóvar, who casts Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as lonesome cowboys reunited after 25 years in “Strange Way of Life.” Commissioned by Saint Laurent Productions (which is also premiering a Jean-Luc Godard short at Cannes), this half-baked half-hour serves as a sexy showcase for creative director Anthony Vaccarello’s latest designs, while barely delivering on the promise that an Almodóvar-made “gay cowboy” movie conjures in the imagination.
At the Cannes premiere, the Spanish director described “Strange” as his response to a question posed by “Brokeback Mountain”: What can two men do on a ranch? Silva (Pascal) gives Jake (Hawke) his answer in the final seconds of the short, and it’s sweet, though it turns out Almodóvar is misremembering Ang Lee’s 2005 Western.

This year’s Cannes has its first crowd-pleasing winner, even if Pedro Almodóvar’s “Strange Way of Life” is technically not a feature-length film.
Starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, the 31-minute western concerns a cowboy riding across the desert to visit a lifelong friend who realizes that his old pal wants to be more than friends. The short feature marks Almodóvar’s second English-language offering following the 2020 feature “The Human Voice” starring Tilda Swinton.
Judging by the immediate post-screening response, next year’s Oscars may have a front-runner for Best Short Film.
Speaking previously on the Dua Lipa podcast, the filmmaker stated that “it’s a queer Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other. It’s about masculinity in a deep sense because the Western is a male genre.”
He continued, in sentiments that echoed his post-screening conversation on Wednesday, “What I...

Pedro Pascal is going to see a man about a horse. Actually, you can scratch the “about a horse” part.
Riding the range in the Wild, Wild West, his cowboy rides into town, hitches his stallion, and walks right into the sheriff’s office. The lawman — he’s named Jake, and played by Ethan Hawke — knows this stranger, Silva. The two lock eyes, and the faintest of smiles breaks across Jake’s face. They knew each other, a long, long time ago. The duo decide to catch up over a drink.

The great Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar is a rabid fan of the Western genre but until now he had never made one. He had also only dabbled in directing an English-language film with the exception of the 2020 short The Human Voice, which starred Tilda Swinton.
His latest movie is also a short, just 31 minutes, but he finally got to do his Western in English. It’s a nice homage to the form and those great directors who created it, but it is safe to say this homage could only have come from this master of cinema.
Almodóvar brought the finished product to its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday and, if flattered by the attention, the ghosts of John Ford, Howard Hawks, John Sturges, Anthony Mann, Raoul Walsh and Sam Peckinpah may be surprised at the twist that this 73-year-old fanboy has given Strange Way of Life.

Nine more minutes of footage would take Pedro Almodóvar’s film “Strange Way of Life” from a live action short frontrunner to a best picture contender.
To be eligible for the Academy Awards’ best picture category, a film must have a minimum 40-minute runtime. Almodóvar’s movie runs 31 minutes. With those extra nine minutes, we could also highlight the worthiness of actors Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and the project’s artisan categories. But for his second English language endeavor, coming three years after “The Human Voice” with Tilda Swinton, the Spanish auteur’s sensibilities are never lacking. His new Spanish Western stands proudly next to some of his most audacious movies such as “Talk to Her” and “Volver.”
A rainy Wednesday in the south of France didn’t keep crowds of ticket rushers and fans from trying to get a glimpse of Almodóvar’s short film starring Pascal and Hawke.

Sony Pictures Classics announced that they have acquired worldwide rights to Pedro Almodóvar’s short film, Strange Way Of Life, starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal.
The film will be screened in the Official Selection and in world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, along with the director and the two main actors. Shot in the south of Spain, this short film is the second experience of the filmmaker in English, after La Voix Humaine made in 2020. Sony Pictures Classics picked up the short in pre-production and will release it this fall.
Strange Way Of Life follows two gunmen who reunite after 25 years. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen.

Pedro Almodóvar has been dancing with the idea of directing an English-language movie for decades, but he’s closer than ever to getting there. “I think I’m going to make it sooner or later,” the Spanish filmmaker told IndieWire over Zoom from his apartment in Madrid earlier this month. “I should be more honest about knowing my conditions.”
That admission comes a few months after “A Manual for Cleaning Women,” the adaptation of the Lucía Berlin short stories that Almodóvar spent years hoping to make, fell apart a matter of months before production was set to begin with Cate Blanchett. Brokeback Mountain was wonderfully devastating, but Pedro Almodóvar turned down a chance to direct it because it wasn’t the gay western he dreamed of making. Now he’s getting his own shot at a similar story with Strange Way of Life, a 30-minute short starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke that just debuted its first trailer.
In the clip, we meet Pascal’s cowboy Silva and Hawke’s Sheriff Jake, old friends (or more) who reunite after 25 years. They meet to investigate a murder, not their feelings toward each other, but the trailer still offers plenty of angst. “Years ago you asked me what two men could do living together on a ranch,” Silva says to Jake. “I’ll answer you now.” Check it out below.

Strange Way of Life has just released its first trailer with an interesting look and tone. Firstly, with two big actors, Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, and an acclaimed Spanish filmmaker, it will not be a feature-length film but a thirty-minute short. The poster sports a photo filter not usually found on professionally produced films. The trailer itself is edited in an unconventional style that looks and has the pacing of a throwback to short film serial previews played before feature films during the golden age of Hollywood.
The plot synopsis, according to Variety, reads,
“The 30-minute film follows Silva (Pascal), a cowboy who travels on horseback across the desert to meet an old friend, Sheriff Jake (Hawke), whom he hasn’t seen in 25 years. Soon, Silva finds out that his trip was not meant for reminiscing on the past. The trailer shows the two men untangle their complicated romantic history.

Pedro Almódovar is one of the greatest living filmmakers, and there aren’t many people out there who would disagree. And though his films have captivated audiences all over the world throughout his career, he has only barely dipped his toes into English-language filmmaking, debuting the short film, “The Human Voice,” in 2020. His next English-language project, “Strange Way of Life,” still plays in the short film space, but it finds Almódovar venturing into the world of Westerns.

Pedro Almodóvar’s queer Western short film “Strange Way of Life” has released its first trailer.
The short, which stars Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, is somewhat akin to a “Brokeback Mountain” revamp, or moreso, a chance for Almodóvar to do finally do it his way. Almost two decades ago, the Spanish filmmaker was offered the opportunity to direct the Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger film, but gave up the offer in fear he wouldn’t have the creative freedom to make the movie how he wanted it.
“This is a queer western in the sense that there are two men, and they love each other, and they behave in that situation in an opposite way,” said Almodóvar on an episode of “Dua Lipa: At Your Service.” “What I can tell you about the film is that it has a lot of the elements of the Western. It has the gunslinger.

"Years ago you asked me... what two men could do living together on a ranch." Pathe UK has revealed the first official trailer for Spanish master Pedro Almodóvar's latest film titled Strange Way of Life - which is premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival this May. This is another medium-length film from Almodóvar, coming in under 60 minutes, very similar to his other "short" The Human Voice that he made with Tilda Swinton. After twenty-five years Silva rides a horse across the desert to visit his friend Sheriff Jake. They celebrate the meeting, but the next morning Jake tells him that reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their friendship. It seems to be a romantic western - co-starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke as the two cowboys. The film's cast includes Manu Ríos, Jason Fernández, José Condessa, Pedro Casablanc, Daniel Rived, and Erenice Lohan.

A Manual For Cleaning Women will no longer be Pedro Almodóvar’s English-language feature directorial debut after the Spanish master withdrew, citing “a very painful decision”.
Cate Blanchett will star and produce through Dirty Films, however Almodóvar said he was not ready to tackle a project of such magnitude. No replacement director has been announced yet.
A Manual For Cleaning Women is an adaptation of Lucia Berlin’s short story collection of the same name comprising 43 tales of women in challenging jobs. Almodóvar and Berlín co-wrote the screenplay adaptation.

The Venice Film Festival wraps today after putting on a show against the odds. Despite lacking in studio fare, there was no shortage of well-received movies. Was there a Sundance-style bounce, with critics giddy just to be on the Lido after months of lockdown? Perhaps. But this was also a solid roster of independent movies. While there was no Joker juggernaut, there was at least one Roma rave. We’ve done a wide sweep of the English-language reviews and here’s our run-down of the best-received world premieres.

The Searchlight Pictures movie, which debuted last night, was expected to be impress given its simultaneous berths in Venice and Toronto, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s just...

NYFF 2020 Trailer Teases Looks At Steve McQueen’s ‘Small Axe,’ Sofia Coppola’s ‘On The Rocks’ & More
Yep, festival season is a little weird this year, but if the currently-ongoing Venice Film Festival and just-started Toronto International Film Festival are any indication, the 58th New York Film Festival is going to be just as good, albeit enjoyed from a safe distance. At the Venice Film Festival’s annual press lunch today, Artistic Director Alberto Barbera offered further insight into down-to-the-wire preparations for what has so far been a very successful mounting of the pandemic era’s first major industry event. He also talked about some of the titles that were still under discussion until near the September 2 launch, as well as talent travel issues. Further, Biennale Director General Andrea Del Mercato revealed the financial cost to the administration as a result of Covid.
“A lot,” Barbera said when I asked how much the organization had spent on protocols. Del Mercato said that between security and sanitary measures, the bill was about 600K euros ($700K). Add in changes in the structure, like running 18 screens rather than 10 to make up for capacity restrictions, and the price ratchets up to about 1M euros ($1.2M). However, he noted, “It’s difficult to give a full...
