There are few absolutes in life, let alone in the world of horror; but this I find to be true: Herschell Gordon Lewis was appreciated in his time. Beloved, actually. Sadly passing away on September 26th, 2016 at the age of 87, he left behind a slew of grindhouse classics encapsulating everything from biker flicks to sex ed pieces. But Hgl will be forever known for a string of unique and groundbreaking horror films including The Gore Gore Girls (1972), his last opus before he took a 30 year sabbatical from filmmaking. And on the Hgl spectrum, it’s one of his best.
If you’re familiar at all with “The Godfather of Gore” (a moniker he wore as a point of pride) but haven’t seen The Gore Gore Girls, the differences between this and say, Blood Feast (1963), his first splatter extravaganza, are minimal. Made for a pittance of 63 grand, Ggg has all...

Scorpion, the DVD label that specializes in first-class releases of often second-rate films, does it again with Point of Terror, an obscure thriller from 1971. The film was the brainchild of star/writer/producer Peter Carpenter (Blood Mania). Never heard of him? Neither had I until this screener copy arrived. A bit of research reveals that Carpenter was a wanna-be star with grand ambition and modest talents - much like the character he plays in the film, which was directed by Alex Nicol. Sadly, Carpenter's reed-thin list of movie credits is due to the fact that he died young- in fact, shortly after this film was released. Carpenter, who personifies "beefcake", plays a lounge singer with a loyal following. However, he's frustrated that his fame is limited to a local restaurant. Although he has his pick of the female groupies,...

Code Red has made a name for themselves as a DVD distributor unafraid to take risks, invest in the bizarre, and most certainly, respond to fan interest. Bill Norton Olsen, the fiendish brain behind the label, is famous for telling it like it is, taking on all comers on message boards and via his own forums, defending his product and standing up for the meek uber geeks who delight in his offerings. Norton Olsen is a rare dissenting voice in the DVD vs blu-ray debate, swearing he will never give in to Sony’s new format for a variety of reasons, and he isn’t shy about blasting naysayers who blindly attack what he does send to shelves. . Last year Code Red launched a new series hosted by ex-wwe superstar Maria Kanellis, dubbing it Maria’S B-movie Mayhem. While primarily focusing on double bills (Scream/Barn Of The Naked Dead,...
