The film is unique in terms of language realism: members of each nationality, encountered by a main hero on his way, speak their own language (German, Serbo-Croatian, French, Italian, English), what makes his adventures and communication problems more realistic.
The film is inspired by fates of many Polish soldiers, who tried to flee from occupied Poland to Polish Army in exile, created in France, and then Great Britain. Because direct routes were soon cut off, many of them had to travel through Balkan countries, Middle East and northern Africa.
A patrol of Polish soldiers in Northern Africa reportedly captured Italian military bordello indeed.
The film was originally in black and white. It was digitally remastered and colorized in 2000 by the Hollywood company Dynacs Digital Studios, as requested by the Studio Filmowe Oko and TV Polsat.
Polish feature film made in 1969, based on Kazimierz Slawinski's novel, Przygody kanoniera Dolasa (The Adventures of Dolas the Cannoneer). It was shot in Sochi, Baku, Poswietne and Lodz, among other Polish locations.
