This movie was beset with financial problems, and star James Mason had furious rows with director Burgess Meredith to further compound matters.
According Jeff Bridges, the production was canceled midway through principal photography after financing fell through as they were on-location in Hong Kong. To finish the movie, Dick Randall completed the remaining scenes with animation, and shot new sequences with Broderick Crawford to fill in gaps in the plot. Neither Bridges nor Burgess Meredith even knew the film had been completed and released until nearly 20 years later, when Bridges found the title in a film rental catalog.
His uncredited bit part as a Senator was the final feature film for character actor Robert Shayne, ending a film career of almost 50 years.
