Reflecting New Realities of Motherhood in Modern Cinema The iconic utterance Mere paas maa hai, by Shashi Kapoor’s character Ravi in Deewaar, has long epitomized the elevated status of mothers in Indian cinema. However, historical depictions have often showcased mothers as either paragons of sacrifice or passive figures sidelined by melodrama. Over the decades, these portrayals have evolved significantly. From Sacrificial Icons to Complex Characters Movies like Mother India with Nargis Dutt and Deewaar with Nirupa Roy, set the high standard for maternal sacrifice. These characters became so iconic that their portrayals almost seemed to define motherhood in Bollywood. However,

Films are shot on digital cameras, transferred on discs and that is how they reach for projection in cinemas. Digital cameras did away with a lot of peripheral needs and expenses.
For starters, they did away with editing rooms where a rush print of a film was edited on a table (literally), frame by frame. It can now be done on the spot when you are shooting. The advantage is that you have a small screen that is attached to the camera and this enables you to see what you are shooting and how it will be seen on a cinema screen.
The biggest money-saving benefit, however, is that you save lakhs on the negatives that used to be needed for shoots and the ‘positive film’ required for release prints. These films were all imported, controlled by the authorities and often in short supply.
The bigger the film, the bigger the order for release prints,...

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has completed a “wondrous” 55 years in the world of Hindi cinema and to celebrate it he has given himself an AI spin. It was in 1969, when the cine icon stepped into the world of showbiz with ‘Saat Hindustani’ and since then he has captivated the audience with his impeccable performances on screen.
Amitabh took to X (formerly Twitter), where he dropped two AI images of himself.
The first picture has a camera lens in place of his spectacle lens. The second photo has a colourful camera reel like streamers with faces and eyes made on it.
“T 4924 – 55 years in the wondrous world of Cinema… and AI, gives me its interpretation… a presentation by Ef B… self made,” Big B wrote on Twitter.
Even though he started his acting career with ‘Saat Hindustani, Big B had first began his journey as a voice narrator in ‘Bhuvan Shome’ starring...

I noticed something curious. Director Siddharth Anand of the film ‘Fighter’ says that his film flopped because 90% of Indian moviegoers have never sat in an airplane! I was amazed, amused, but, most of all, I was worried. Worried, because this is how the maker of a Rs 400-crore film thinks!
My mind instantly went back to Shakti Samanta’s ‘An Evening In Paris’ (1967), where a bikini-clad Sharmila Tagore is sea skiing as Shammi Kapoor courts her hanging from a helicopter. After learning what Malhotra had said to explain why his film had failed, I wondered how many people hang from a helicopter to court a woman! I don’t know anybody who has done such a thing and still, ‘An Evening In Paris’ was a major hit! I can cite hundreds of such examples.
Of course, the audience must first identify with the subject of a film. The other factor...

Content is king is the belief the film industry has thrived upon all along. An appropriate casting as per the needs of the story completed the basics of making a film. A director craved for a good performer rather than a star and did not chase a star just for the sake of it.
It was because of content that films with no star value such as ‘Saraswatichandra’ (Manish), ‘Kora Kagaz’, ‘Dosti’ (Sudhir and Sushil) and ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (Salman Khan) went on to become hits. These are just a few examples.
Rajesh Khanna had delivered many flops before he could give his first hit and so had Amitabh Bachchan. When a good script that matched their talent and persona came up, it made them a star.
When a star is born thanks to a few huge hits, everybody wants to cast him and this phenomenon causes the downfall of a star.

Bambai Meri Jaan
Starring Kay Kay Menon, Avinash Tiwary, Kritika Kamra, Nivedita Bhattacharya, Amyra Dastur
Directed by Shujaat Saudagar
One thing about the enduring interest in lives of smugglers and gangsters: they provided a lot of employment to Mumbai’s population back in the 1960s, 70s and 80s when they were active; they continue to provide employment to actors and technicians who are part of these never-ending sanguinary sagas of nebulous loyalties and sticky alliances.
Bambai Meri Jaan based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s Dongri to Dubai: Six Decades of the Mumbai Mafia is a slowburn crime thriller with criminal characters trapped in a sordid system that fosters treachery. At a running time of almost ten hours, it gives us a lot of time to think for an answer to that ultimate crime conundrum: does crime pay? How much did Excel Entertainment make out of this deal. By the way?...

New Delhi, Aug 26 (Ians) Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has talked about the concept of ‘superstitions’, saying people should not believe in superstitions because it misguides them, and it must not be encouraged too.

Amitabh has been a vocal ‘brand ambassador’ of the Swachh Bharat Mission. In 2020, he was helping the government to promote its public health message concerning Covid-19.
The host of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ season 15, Big B welcomed Finance Executive Saurabh Sengupta from Durg, Chhattisgarh, to the hot seat of the quiz reality show in the ‘Kbc Play Along’ special episode.
While talking about ‘Super Sandook’ question to Saurabh, Amitabh asked the contestant that ‘whether he believes in superstitions?’

Looking at the first half of the year, January to June 2023, one would believe that the film industry has yet to come out of the Covid-19 lockdown effect. The films just don’t seem to work. Nor do the top-billing stars. Were it for the Covid-19 hangover, how does one explain the blockbuster success of ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘The Kerala Story’? How does one account for the success of ‘Pathaan’, ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’,’Zara Hatkke Zara Bachke’, and the last year’s release ‘Drishyam 2’?
As against these successes, what explains the failure of such massively budgeted vehicles such as ‘Adipurush’, to cite the very recent example? Looks like the Hindi audience is not lured by films that are mainly made on computers with VFX!
Indians miss the human story, emotions, humour and music. Something closer to their heart, what they can identify with. The viewers want normal...

‘Bhed Chaal’ is a Hindi proverb very much used in relation to the Hindi film industry. It means that one huge success is followed by numerous other attempts. Original ideas are at a premium in the Hindi film industry. The makers either depend on a foreign film, or a novel, or a South Indian film for a subject.
Filmmakers always want to play safe because the risk factor is always high. The distributor, while being wined and dined, gets a sales pitch, like “Zanjeer se kam nahi hamari picture…” and such. Many smaller-budget imitations of ‘Sholay’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Deewaar’ and other such films flooded the market. That is to say, if one action film worked, many more were certain to follow.
With the introduction of the video format followed by CDs, the trend changed to copying Hollywood films. A star was sent two videos or discs to watch, and they were...

Scarlett Johansson made huge waves yesterday when the Wall Street Journal revealed that the actress had filed a lawsuit against Disney/Marvel alleging they have breached their contract when bumping “Black Widow” out of a theatrical widow and giving the superhero film a hybrid release. Her suit maintains that dropping the film on Disney+ with Premier Access directly impacted her original back-end profits deal, which was based on the film’s performance at the global box office.

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal that Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney/Marvel alleges that the studio breached their contract with their hybrid release, adding “Black Widow” to Premier Access on Disney+ alongside a traditional domestic theatrical release. Scarlett Johansson rocked Hollywood on Thursday by suing Disney for lost income from its decision to release “Black Widow” on both Disney+ and in theaters — and multiple insiders say the actress appears to have a case against the megastudio she’s called home for 11 years. What’s more, if she can prove damages, Disney may have to pay Johansson even more than the $50 million windfall that insiders told the Wall Street Journal she stood to gain from the Marvel film hitting box office-based targets. And Johansson may not be the only Disney star who stands to gain. “They’re going to have to cut a check for at least $50 million to ScarJo (and likely more) and also for other similarly situated talent on their films that are doing simultaneous theatrical/streaming releases,” one top agent told TheWrap. Devin McRae, Partner at Early Sullivan Wright Gizer & McRae Llp, told TheWrap that Johansson could win in court.

Joe Jonas is apparently a sucker for this one hobby that got him into trouble with wife Sophie Turner. Like many folks during the coronavirus pandemic, the Jonas Brothers singer took up a new activity while staying safe at home with Sophie. Joe revealed to the Wall Street Journal that he "got very into" building Legos with the Game of Thrones star, but it wasn't totally smooth sailing for the duo. "My wife and I probably built 10 monstrous Legos," Joe recalled. "It was also quite funny, because I was super focused on helping her but then I was getting easily distracted and playing Fortnite." Joe said that the couple argued about him being distracted by the video game. He...

Comcast and ViacomCBS are exploring partnerships in international streaming — a more targeted agreement than a full-out merger, speculation of which has dogged both companies for months.
The issue came up at a business meeting in New York earlier this summer with Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, ViacomCBS chair Shari Redstone and chief executive Bob Bakish present and has been ongoing between the companies, according to people familiar with the conversations. Expanding in overseas streaming is a focus for both sides. Despite frenzied M&a speculation often targeting the Philadelphia based-conglomerate, an outright merger of Comcast and ViacomCBS would face hefty regulatory hurdles.
It’s not clear what the partnerships might entail, but Roberts noted in April that Comcast is looking to roll Peacock, which is launched in 2020 and is currently only domestic, into overseas markets. Comcast also owns Sky, which operates the Sky Now streaming platform in the U.K.

In the summer of 2016, members of the Turkish armed forces attempted to stage a coup d’état against the government of strongman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The putsch failed, and in its aftermath came a sweeping purge that led to the suspension or dismissal of tens of thousands of soldiers, judges, teachers, police and civil servants, as well as a crackdown against those alleged to be connected to the opposition Gulen movement.
Since then, over one million Turkish nationals have been investigated for terrorism and possible support for the coup attempt. Over half of them have been arrested, while more than 75,000 Turks have fled to Europe to seek asylum. Those events form the backdrop to “Invisible,” Greek journalist Marianna Kakaounaki’s feature directorial debut, which follows three exiled Turks as they struggle to adapt to new lives in Greece. It isn’t often that a subplot overtakes the plot in prominence, but that’s what makes “Solar Opposites” uniquely fun and ambitious. Hulu’s adult-oriented animated sitcom from “Rick and Morty” co-creator Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan (“Star Trek: Lower Decks”) basically gives you two shows in one: a sci-fi sitcom about a race of aliens stranded in middle America, and a serial adventure about the humans they shrink that are imprisoned inside the Wall.
And, in Season 2, the Wall turns into a “True Detective”-like conspiracy thriller involving power, corruption, and murder within the fledgling micro society.
Thus, it’s no accident that both Wall episodes from Season 1 (“Terry and Korvo Steal a Bear”) and Season 2 (“The Unlikely Demise of Terry’s Favorite Shot Glass”) were submitted by Hulu for Emmy consideration. Fans and critics alike are fascinated by the parallel story about totalitarianism. “We were having so...

General Motors, one of the nation’s largest advertisers, is trying to build new roads for minority-owned media outlets, part of a broader push on Madison Avenue to address a large gap between what is spent on large national media properties and media companies operated by owners from diverse backgrounds.
The nation’s largest automaker said it intends to hold an “upfront” with minority-owned media outlets that will give those companies a chance, essentially, to make a pitch for some of its ad dollars. The proposed summit “will encourage existing and potential partners to submit an overview of their business for consideration by Gm for deeper engagements,” the automaker said Friday. “The process that will be used for the selection of media will be accredited by a third party to ensure fairness and transparency>”

Music icon and entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs blasted General Motors and big U.S. companies for scant dollars directed to Black-owned media, saying they “have exploited our culture, undermined our power, and excluded Black entrepreneurs from participating in the value created by Black consumers” by allocating a measly share of ad spending to Black-owned media.

The title first. Aninsri Daeng. Red Aninsri; Or, Tiptoeing On The Still Trembling Berlin Wall. More complicated even than it seems, as there's an homage. Aninsri means something like 'inorganic', is homophonous to 'insi', 'eagle'. The Red Eagle is a figure akin to Batman, a Thai playboy millionaire who wears a costume to fight communism. The sets and suggestions of the title and the extra weight from context are indicative.
At the opening the film states it is "inspired by Thai cinema from the past". Helpful then to you to know that Thai cinema was almost universally dubbed. Why bother with location sound when you have limited equipment? After the fact, Adr. Throw into that though the separation of performance from speech, the business of recording and re-recording, of documentation and truth. Dialogue comes from an earpiece, repeated. Who is listening then? Who is speaking now?
Then add Cold War.

However, as the first season progressed, the show slowly revealed it was simultaneously telling another story.
One of the aliens, Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone), has a habit of shrinking down humans and imprisoning them in a wall-sized terrarium. In a surprising twist, we get to see that the tiny humans have actually formed their own Mad Max-ian style society in there. We learn more and more about this society until, seven episodes into the first season, Solar Opposites ditches the aliens for an entire episode set inside he Wall.

This Solar Opposites review contains no spoilers.
The aliens of Solar Opposites are like a classic sitcom family, sort of. They try to learn a lesson at the end of each episode, but they’re also opportunistic jerks with access to all manner of overpowered sci-fi technology, so the path to learning is always paved with a lot of human corpses. They’re also very stupid aliens, so all they usually end up learning is that they’re stuck together on Earth. But they love each other …maybe? Kind of.
In contrast with Solar Opposites’ creators Mike McMahan and Justin Roiland’s other show, Rick and Morty, which takes a modern approach of being big on character development that carries over from episode to episode, Solar Opposites riffs on the classic multicamera sitcom formula, which emphasizes self-contained episodes that introduce and resolve a conflict within a half-hour packed with jokes...

Here’s a vintage SpongeBob moment, the kind that makes some of us who are years past the demo feel like we can’t get enough of him. In “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” our hero, voiced in that Daffy-Duck-on-happy-pills way by Tom Kenny, discovers that Gary the Snail, his beloved pet companion, has been snailnapped. For a moment, SpongeBob lapses into a misty memory, flashing back to Camp Coral, where he first knew Gary as a kid. It’s all very sweet. Then SpongeBob comes out of the reverie and, sitting back on his haunches, his face turned to the heavens, he bawls so hard that the tears shoot out of his eyes like twin geysers. That moment, which turns sentiment into sheer mockery and then back again, could have been staged by Chuck Jones. But it’s pure SpongeBob.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Ibm is exploring a potential sale of its Watson Health business, as CEO Arvind Krishna "moves to streamline the company and become more competitive in cloud computing".

Ibm currently has a market value of $108 billion, way behind Cloud-computing rivals like AMAzon and Microsoft.
